ABOUT
The baseball jerseys in Johnson City will sport a new logo for the first time in over 45 years this summer as it joins the newly-reorganized Appalachian League as the Doughboys. The nickname is in reference to a statue behind their home stadium, TVA Credit Union Ballpark, named “Spirit of the American Doughboy.” Doughboys was a nickname for American soldiers during World War I and the statue honors U.S. infantrymen who died in service to their country. The Doughboys moniker also harkens back to the city’s baseball past as Johnson City’s original Appalachian League team was called the Soldiers from 1910-38. Johnson City is the most recent champion of the Appy League, winning its 11th title in 2019. It had served as an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals since 1975, counting among its alumni former Cy Young winners Ron Guidry (1978) and LaMarr Hoyt (1983), 1991 National League MVP Terry Pendleton, and current big leaguers Yadier Molina, Paul DeJong, and Jordan Hicks. Rick Magnante is set to serve as the skipper for Johnson City, returning to the Appalachian League for the first time since beginning his managerial 20 2 1 A P PA L AC H I A N L E AG U E M E D I A G U I D E
