ABOUT
Bristol will be returning to its roots this season as the club enters the new version of the Appalachian League with the same name it used when it began its second foray into the league exactly 100 years ago as the then-newly renamed State Liners. In addition to recognizing the centennial anniversary of Bristol’s return to the Appy League in 1921, the team’s name also celebrates the unique nature of the Twin Cities which share the same name and lie directly across the Tennessee-Virginia border from each other. The boundary between the two cities is also the state line, which runs along State Street in their common downtown district.
To further celebrate the historical connection, the team’s logos will use the same blue and red coloring that appear in the American flag, and will incorporate a cream which harkens back to a color found in many oldtime baseball jerseys.
A number of notable players have suited up for Bristol over the years, including Hall of Famer Alan Trammell and many other former MLB stars, among them Bobby Thomson, Lance Parrish, Lou Whitaker, Carlos Lee, Gio Gonzalez and Chris Young who is currently the general manager of the Texas Rangers.
Most recently an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization since 2014, Bristol also served as a farm team for the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox over the years. It has won seven Appalachian League championships with its last coming in 2002.
Leading the State Liners into the latest incarnation of the Appalachian League will be Dave Tremblay who
brings over 1,500 wins and 25 years of coaching experience at nearly every level of baseball to the Bristol dugout this summer. He will be joined on the coaching staff by pitching coach Larry McCall, hitting coach Barbaro Garbey, and player development coach Adrian Turner.
COACHING STAFF
DAVE TREMBLEY
MANAGER
Dave Trembley brings over 1,500 wins and 25 years of coaching experience at nearly every level of baseball to Bristol this summer. Most recently, Trembley worked with the Atlanta Braves and the Houston Astros from 2011-2015, serving as Atlanta’s Director of Player Development (2014-2015) and field coordinator (2011-2012) and Houston’s third base coach (2013). After coaching at the high school level from 1977-1979, Trembley became a scout for the Chicago Cubs in 1984 before he left to manage his first team in the Class-A Carolina League in 1986. After moving to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization in 1987, Trembley managed the Double-A Harrisburg Senators for three seasons where he led the team to an Eastern League title and was named Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year in his first season. Afterwards, Trembley went on to manage two teams in the San Diego Padres system from 1991-1993 before rejoining the Cubs as a manager in their minor league system for nine years. During his time in the Cubs system, Trembley earned his second and third manager of the year awards when he was named the Class A Manager of the Year by USA Today/Baseball Weekly in 1995 and 1999. He then moved to the Baltimore Orioles organization, earning his 1,200th win as a minor league manager in 2003 and getting called up to coach with the Major League club in 2007. Trembley worked as the Orioles bullpen coach and interim manager during the 2007 season before serving as the team’s manager from 2008-2010. Trembley was inducted into the Lancaster JetHawks Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008, the Antelope Valley College Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Florida State League Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also inducted into his alma mater’s hall of fame at the State University of New York at Brockport on October 3, 2015. LARRY MCCALL
PITCHING COACH
Larry McCall is set to serve as the Bristol pitching coach this season, bringing with him over three decades of experience playing and coaching in professional baseball. He is familiar with the Appalachian League, having begun his professional playing career in Bluefield as a member of the Baltimore Orioles organization in 1971. McCall would make his Major League debut six years later on Sept. 10, 1977 as a New York Yankee. He spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues, earning a World Series ring with the Yankees in 1978 and also pitching for the Texas Rangers in 1979, before his playing career ended in 1981. McCall kicked off his coaching career in 1990, returning to the Appalachian League as the pitching coach for the same Bluefield squad he had previously played for. He continued to work his way up in the Orioles organization, coaching at each level of its minor-league system through the 2010 campaign, including a stint in the Major Leagues as the bullpen coach in 2006. He was also named the winner of the organization’s Cal Ripken, Sr., Player Development Award in 2005. McCall later joined the Arizona League affiliate of the San Francisco Giants for four seasons and worked the 2017 campaign as the pitching coach for the Gulf Coast League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. BARBARO GARBEY
HITTING COACH
Barbaro Garbey joins the State Liners staff as the team’s hitting coach this year following two seasons in the same role with Danville as an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves organization. He spent six seasons with the Braves, having also worked with Double-A Mississippi in 2016. The Santiago de Cuba native began his coaching career in 2002 working in several roles within the Detroit Tigers organization before spending seven seasons coaching in the Chicago Cubs minor-league system from 2006-2012. Following his arrival to the United States from Cuba in 1980, Garbey played parts of nine seasons in professional baseball, including 226 games over three seasons in the big leagues for the Detroit Tigers (1984-85) and Texas Rangers (1988). He made his MLB debut in 1984, hitting .287 with 52 RBIs while helping the Tigers win their fourth World Series title. Garbey also spent seven seasons in the Mexican League, winning another championship in 1992, this time with the Mexico City Tigers, before retiring following the 1994 campaign.
ADRIAN TURNER
PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
Adrian Turner joins Bristol as the Player Development Coach with years of experience coaching players from the youth through collegiate levels. Turner is currently pursuing a Master’s in Sport Administration while serving as a Graduate Assistant with the Grambling State University baseball team. Turner graduated from GSU in 2012 and played four seasons as a pitcher and first baseman (2008-2011) and served one season as an undergraduate assistant. During his time as a player, Turner was named captain twice and earned the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament MVP on the way to leading his team to a conference championship in 2010. Turner has also helped develop players through his time working for the Minnesota Twins RBI program. In addition to baseball, he was also the head coach of the Holy Family Catholic High School girls basketball team and was named the Section 2AAAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014.
