SCHOOL BUS RE-REGISTRATION FOR SCHOOL YEAR 13/14: In an effort to reduce the amount of time and paperwork required of parents, all current students who have re-registered for School Year 13/14 have automatically been re-registered for school bus services.

Students will be reprogrammed for busing services based on School Year 12/13 transportation data.

Please email any changes in information (e.g., address, phone numbers, etc.) to CaseySTO@pac.dodea.edu .

Students in Grades 2 and below who require an Alternate Guardian Memorandum, the forms will be accomplished in August 2013. Bus passes can be picked up beginning the week of 12 August 2013.

Host Nation Summer School!

We are pleased to announce that Casey Elementary will have a Korean Culture class from July 1st to July 26th (no class on July 4th). The class will be from 0900 to 1200 during the week in classroom 206 in building 2400 (main building). Our host nation teacher, Ms. Paek, will be the instructor. Please be on the lookout for a permission slip from your child’s teacher.

Forms will be due by June 7th!

A Note from the Nurse Parent Information - Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is a common spring/summer time viral illness that affects infants and children. Its name describes the location of the rash during the illness. Typically, children experience fever, sore throat and small blisters in the mouth followed by small blisters on the hands and then feet. It takes a week to 10 days for the virus to run its course.

HFMD is moderately contagious. The virus is spread through coughing and sneezing but can also be spread through feces. You can prevent getting HFMD by washing your hands often and avoiding close contact with people who have it.

There is no specific treatment for HFMD. You can use home care to relieve the child’s symptoms. Cool fluids can help with sore throat and mouth blisters. Avoid acidic or spicy food and drinks. Fever and pain can be managed by over-the-counter fever reducers and pain relievers. Fluids should be encouraged to prevent dehydration.

Hand-foot-mouth disease is not the same as foot-and-mouth disease (also called hoof-and-mouth disease), which affect cattle, sheep and swine.

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications Applications for reduced price and free school meals are accepted throughout the year. Families must reapply annually to receive these benefits. Area 1 applications can be obtained from the Camp Casey ACS Financial Readiness Program located in Building 2451 right next to Casey Elementary School.

STUDENT SAFETY NOTICE “Kiss and Drop” Zone The designated “kiss and drop” zone is inside the U horseshoe area by the school marquee, across from the back of the PX entrance. This area is clearly marked. Please do NOT drop off your students in the main road by the Youth/School Age center or in the ACS/Red Cross parking lot. Peer Pressure for Adults Janice felt her face getting hot. She was certain every customer in the grocery store was staring and judging. She swore she could feel every adult urging her to "do something about that little brat." For some reason, this perceived pressure made Janice much angrier than if her daughter had acted out in private.

When they got to the car, Janice lost her cool.

When she got home and told her husband, Bill, he felt pressure too. His beloved wife had been embarrassed in public and he couldn't put up with that.

Fortunately for their daughter, neither Janice nor Bill became abusive, but they did both react more harshly than usual.

Are adults affected by peer pressure too? Do we allow our fear of what others think to make us lose our cool?

Many parents have told us they have a harder time staying calm when the school, the neighbors, or especially strangers are exposed to their kids' misbehavior - and the adults are exposed to humiliation.

Wise parents realize that all kids are going to have their moments and some of those moments are bound to be witnessed by others. These wise adults remember that their ultimate goal is to raise great kids - not to impress the neighbors. This helps them view kids' mistakes as learning opportunities and resist the urge to overreact and do something right now.

Wise adults also have a plan for staying calm when they get frustrated with their kids and practice responses before they find themselves ranting and raving. They take steps to set themselves up for success when things get intense.

Often students are in specials, away from the building, etc., and it is difficult at best to get these messages to the students. Please plan appropriately. *ALL Students (K-8th) tardy to school are required to have a parent or guardian escort them into the building and sign in at the main office. *If contact information changes (i.e., telephone number, email address, emergency contact) please notify the main office immediately of the change. If you are going out of town and you leave your child with a guardian, please notify the main office, so we may verify that the person has permission to pick up your child from school or from the bus. *If you are due to PCS, please notify the main office at least two weeks in advance. Adequate time is required to prepare grades and records so you may hand carry to the next duty station. *If you wish to do some volunteering, please contact Jessica Foley at 730-6444 for more information.
