with Santa The USAG-RC and Area 1 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) Department invites the community to a Christmas Dinner with Santa and free Christmas presents on December 24, 2013 at Camp Red Cloud Mitchell’s Club. This event marks a timeless tradition for Soldiers and Civilian families and friends, including Korean employees and their families, to share a night of holiday music and a sumptuous dinner buffet commemorating this Christmas season. “It’s hard, especially for Soldiers who are away from their families for the first time. But we at Family and MWR want them to know that we’re here for them,” says Mitchell’s Club Manager Mark Onstad. “We’re reaching out to leaders to pass the word, letting Soldiers know they don’t have to be alone in their barracks or their apartments this Christmas Eve and encouraging them to join their extended family for this special Christmas event at Mitchell’s Club,” Onstad says. As an added Christmas treat, everyone, adults and children, will receive a very special Christmas present, wrapped with tender loving care and presented by Santa himself, courtesy of the USAG Red Cloud/Area l FMWR Department. “We want to do something special for Soldiers, Katusas, U.S. and Korean civilian employees and their family members, so in addition to Santa and the awesome presents he’ll be giving away, the chef and I are working a little kitchen magic for Christmas dinner. This will truly be a Christmas Eve to remember for everyone who attends," Onstad says. And what a dinner it will be, complete with roast turkey, smoked ham, BBQ Ribs, bread dressing, mashed potatoes with gravy, rice, sweet yams, green bean casserole, buttered corn, salad bar, seasonal breads & rolls, eggnog, and a variety of pies and desserts to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth. For most people Christmas is normally a joyous occasion, but for those spending it far away from home it can be a lonely, stressful time. Unit Adopt-an-Orphan Camp Casey Warrior’s Club Saturday, December 14, 11:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. This special Holiday Season program affords all Area l Units an opportunity to ‘adopt’ a local orphan and treat them to live entertainment shows and a meal at the Camp Casey Warrior’s Club. Participating Units will be assigned an orphan and are expected to provide him or her with a Christmas present and pay for their meal. This is an outstanding opportunity to spread holiday cheer to the less fortunate in the local community. This special program will teach you how to use the bus and subway system so you can explore Korea at your leisure. The program includes a trip from Uijeongbu to Seoul using various forms of public transportation. The experienced instructor will start at the very beginning and help you learn basic chords, then move up from there. Saturday, December 21 Lotte World, located near Seokchon Lake, is comprised of two separate areas; Adventure Theme (indoor) and Magic Island (outdoor), each filled with rides, souvenir shops, food and beverage vendors and countless photo opportunities. Magic Island features some exciting rides such as the Gyro-Drop, a steep drop of some 70 meters and the Flume Ride. Parades and laser shows are all part of the experience. THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ACS Newcomer’s Orientation Class Has the Answers Story & Photos by SGT Micus Ralls Adjusting to life in Korea can be a daunting experience for many newcomers, but luckily for them the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area l Army Community Service (ACS) office at Camp Casey has a special program available designed to help with the transition process. Shortly after arriving in country, newcomers, Soldiers, Family members, civilian personnel and their families soon realize the many differences between living in South Korea and the U.S., not the least of which are the language barrier, driving conditions, variety of food and other cultural differences that make living here interesting and in most cases fun. But despite these major differences, everyone, whether visiting Korea for the first time or returning for another tour, can still enjoy their time in Korea and, more specifically, their time in the Area l community. And that’s where the ACS ‘Community Newcomers’ Orientation,’ offered on the 3rd Monday of every month at the Camp Casey ACS, can help. The orientation is open to all USFK I.D. card-holders, including family members and active duty personnel. The class involves a number of representatives from various departments and organizations within the Area l community, including subject matter experts from Camp Casey, Camp Red Cloud, and Camp Stanley, each giving attendees the latest information about their respective activity or program along with tips and timely advice to help make the transition to Area l easier and more comfortable. Returning members also benefit from the class with new, updated information regarding changes in policies, programs or facilities since their last assignment in country.

remarks from either the Casey Garrison Commander or his appointed representative, who explain the ‘big picture’ that encompasses Area l, including the many various tenant commands and units that call Area l home. “The Newcomer’s Orientation is designed to give newcomers, and anyone returning to Korea for a second or third tour, the latest, most up-to-date information about what they can expect during their tour here,” says orientation coordinator Mark Hagelin, ACS Information Referral and Follow-up Program Manager. “The class is open to everyone and most folks leave here with a much better understanding of what they can expect during their time here. We get compliments all the time from people who complete the class, telling us how much they learned in such a short time. It’s important information that they can use on a daily basis. Much of the

information they receive here they can’t get anywhere else, so this class is a great benefit to military and civilians alike,” Hagelin says. A number of subject matter representatives, including those from the Legal Office, Non-combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO), Troop Medical Clinic, TRICARE, Army Substance Abuse Program (ASAP), American Red Cross, Legal Office and a host of other key partners that comprise the Area l community present their programs and answer questions from attendees. “It’s not unusual to hear someone who attended the briefing say later that they thought they already knew most of the information, only to discover during the class that they either had it wrong or didn’t know the information in the first place. This is especially true with attendees who have been here for several months and thought they knew everything there is to know about Area l,” Hagelin stated. “Military spouses in particular are always impressed with the orientation because they get accurate and timely information first-hand and can ask questions from the subject matter experts. They really appreciate that,” he says. Following the classroom portion of the orientation attendees participate in a four-hour tour of the area that focuses on how to get around in the off-base community using public transportation. The tour includes a short walk to the Bosan Subway Station near the Camp Casey Main Gate where attendees are given hands on training on the use of the automated ticket machines and a brief orientation of the subway system in general. Once everyone is familiar with the basics, they board the subway bound for Uijeongbu Station (transportation paid by ACS), the hub for local shopping and dining in Area l, where they visit the popular Shinsaegae Department complex and underground shopping area before having lunch (attendees pay for their meal) at any one of the many local restaurants available. “This part of the orientation is especially popular with attendees. Most of them have never used public transportation here because it can be confusing if you’ve never tried it before. Once they see how easy and efficient it is to get around in Korea, they feel much more comfortable using the system,” Hagelin states. The Newcomer’s Orientation class is available once a month and Hagelin says everyone is welcome to sign up, no matter if you’re new to Korea or if you’ve been here before. “There’s always something new and interesting to be gained from attending the class,” he says. Newcomer to Korea and new Army wife Kaitlyn West, who hails from Florida, attended a recent Newcomer’s Orientation Brief and had this to say about her experience: ITZ: Where were you stationed before arriving in Korea? West: This is my first time being a military spouse. I recently got married and my husband is in school right now. ITZ: Are you command sponsored? West: No. ITZ: How did you hear about the Newcomer’s Orientation Brief? West: I heard about it on Facebook and I’ve been to the ACS Office once before and saw the notice about it. ITZ: So you decided to just show up and see what it’s all about? West: Yeah. With me being new to the Army in general, I figured it would be good information to know. ITZ: Was there anything in the class that you already knew? West: I went through the NEO process before and thought I was familiar with that a little bit, but now I know much more about it. I had heard about some of the other programs, but not in such detail. I also was happy to hear about the volunteering program too. ITZ: Being a new spouse and new to Korea and the Army, what were your major concerns about coming to Korea? West: The language barrier, for one. I really didn’t know what to expect. The time difference was an issue until I got the hang of it. I kept calling family members back in the States and waking them up in the middle of the night. Once I accidently sent a text message at the wrong time. ITZ: What is the most difficult part of living here versus the States? West: Knowing where to go for different things. The food too. Not knowing what things are. I’m generally not a picky eater, but at least I would like to know what I’m eating. ITZ: Anything else you would like to mention about your time in Korea? West: Yes. I definitely enjoy being here. It’s very interesting. Some people I know complain there is nothing to do here, but I think there is. It’s really interesting and I’m happy to be here.

A-3 VISA and SOFA Stamp: FREE Assistance and Transportation to Yangju Immigration Office

The Camp Casey Army Community Service (ACS) Office now provides FREE monthly bus transportation to the Yangju Immigration Office for NEWCOMERS and authorized community members requiring SOFA/VISA assistance. The bus will depart the Camp Casey ACS Office at 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately 12 noon on the following dates (every 3rd Thursday of the month):

Thursday, December 19, 2013 Thursday, January 16, 2014 All personnel are reminded that all SOFA/Visa documents must be processed within 90 days of arrival in Korea. Processing service is available at the Yangju Immigration Office. Failure to apply for your A-3 Visa may result in fines and possible deportation. If you need assistance getting your SOFA/Visa documents in order, the Camp Casey ACS staff can help. They have all the forms you’ll need and are ready to assist you to make sure all forms are properly filled out. Remember, every member of your family must have a separate, properly completed form. Active duty personnel must prepare a SOFA memorandum for your Commander’s signature (ACS can provide you with a sample). Civilian employees must have a copy of their current Letter of Employment. All applicants must apply in person at the Yangju Immigration Office with all necessary documents. Don’t know how to get there? No problem. You can pick up a map with easy directions to the Yangju Immigration Office at the Camp Casey ACS office. Free transportation is provided from Camp Casey to the Yangju Immigration Office. Volunteer of the Month HHC 1-72 AR The First Tank Volunteer Program, under the direction of SFC Vannak R. Sim and Sergeant Lenin L. Osorio of HHC Scout Platoon, provides opportunities throughout the year for Soldiers and their Family Members to interact with local Korean citizens and to explore the countryside. Soldiers of First Tank participated in multiple volunteer activities in the community in recent months, including cleaning rivers, community parks and beaches as well as indoor events such as cooking and cleaning for the elderly and volunteer work at area schools. Volunteers also worked with the Camp Casey USO, providing assistance during training activities. By volunteering their time and expertise, 1-72 Armor Battalion Soldiers gain valuable life lessons while providing valuable service to their host country. Some Soldiers are now eligible for medals and other special recognition for their outstanding community service efforts. The First Tank Volunteer Program encourages Soldiers to spend some of their free time in productive ways. As a result, many volunteer at least once every month, some more frequently, to help build stronger ties between the two countries by volunteering to assist in a number of community projects. Well done!
