Story & Photos by SSG Matthew C Ritter
or the thousands of Soldiers in our Armed Forces today many have experienced some of the most traumatic drama and adrenaline rushes very few people will ever understand. A recent article in Psychology Today talked about why many people put their lives at risk performing extreme sports like skydiving and base jumping. Dr. Michael Davis, an Emory University neuroscientist who specializes in fear, discussed the notion of the adrenaline junky. “Fear is an incredibly strong emotion, Davis says.

“If something scares us, the body immediately releases endorphins, dopamine and norepinephrine. Endorphins mitigate pain, dopamine and norepinephrine are performance enhancers. There haven’t been direct studies on so-called action sports, but the general scientific thinking is that the more fearful a certain sport makes you, the greater the release of these chemicals. The greater the release of these chemicals, the greater the addiction-like symptoms.” Commanders today realize that the extreme stress Soldiers experience in a combat environment (natural fear) also releases the natural chemicals that can become addictive. Many Soldiers come back from down range looking for the “rush” and doing so in an unsafe, uncontrolled way. Leaders knew that safety briefings and proper training alone could not mitigate the adrenaline rush that Soldiers were looking for. That’s when risk behavior experts developed Warrior Adventure Quest (WAQ), an Army “reset” training tool designed to introduce Soldiers to activities that serve as alternatives to aberrant behavior often associated with accidents. This tool presents coping outlets to help Soldiers realize their own new level of “normal” after deployment and “move on” with their lives.

CSM Rodney D. Harris
Lieutenant General John D. Johnson, Commanding General of the U.S. Eighth Army, and Command Sergeant Major Rodney D. Harris, U.S. Eighth Army Command Sergeant Major, brought WAQ to Korea to help prevent Soldiers from getting into trouble while stationed here. The Area I Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) department adopted the program that has since become very popular with Soldiers and their leaders. As a feature writer for In The Zone Magazine, I recently tagged along with 4th Chemical Company 1st and 2nd Decon Platoons on two days of WAQ activities. Our early morning bus trip took two and a half hours to reach a remote area of the Gangwon Province, giving me an opportunity to talk to 1LT Li xu of 1st Decon Platoon to find out how he learned about WAQ and what expectations he had going into it.
14
USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
Q: How did you find out about Warrior Adventure Quest? A: One of my Soldiers was flipping through In the Zone magazine and saw the advertisement for WAQ, 1LT Li Xu brought it to me and asked if this was something that they could do. I called Steven Toepper (FMWR Community Activity Manager) who gave me the information about the program and set a date of availability. I then submitted the training concept to my Company Commander, he then put it the training schedule and the rest is history. Q: What do you expect as a leader to get out of Warrior Adventure Quest? A: Team building and bonding will be the biggest things I want to see out of my Soldiers. I want to see how everyone works together as a team. I will definetely find out who is afraid of heights and who can push themselves to conquer their fears. I‘ll admit it, I’m okay with heights but I don’t like roller coasters or bungee jumping. I’m sure that my Soldiers will push me into facing those fears.
Upon arriving at our first event I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful terrain of mountains, trees, and how crystal clear the water of the Nattnaeninshon River was cutting through the valley. After getting rigged up in the zip line harnesses and briefed on how to zip line safely, you could feel the excitement coming from Soldiers, no matter what their rank was or what they were about to do. On the first leg of the zip lining journey you could easily identify those who had full confidence in themselves being suspend in the air and those who needed encouragement from their fellow battle buddies. The zip line course is made of six different lanes with various lengths and speed. Two of them cross the full span of the Nattnaeningshon River. With a professional and experienced staff controlling every movement, Soldiers enjoyed the exhilarating ride. Many walked away with smiles on their faces.
IN THE ZONE
15
When 1LT xu finished leading his Soldiers through the course, I talked to him about some of things he could identify about his Soldiers that in other circumstances they wouldn’t be able to do. Q: Going into the zip line portion of WAQ, what were your expectations as a leader? A: I was expecting to identify a few soldiers who might be afraid of heights and wanted to see if they could conquer their fear. I also was looking for team players, Soldiers who would help out their buddy and push and encourage them through. Q: Did you see any of that? A: Yes I did! I was able to identify two Soldiers in my Platoon that were afraid of heights. I saw right from the start that they were hesitant in putting on the harness. They were hanging out in the back from everyone else. A couple of my other Soldiers helped them get into their harness. The hesitant Soldiers were nervously shaking their heads and saying that they were afraid, but with overwhelming encouragement from the platoon they eventually agreed to give it a try. Q: Did they make it through course? A: YES! And they were happy that they did!
16
USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
Later I sat down with PFC Megan Frazee of 2nd Decon PLT and asked her to share her experience riding the zip-line. Q: What were your expectations when you heard about Warrior Adventure Quest and what did you think of the zip line course? A: I came out expecting not to PFC Megan Frazee do as much as we did. I thought originally it was going to be a little “cheesy” and “corny.” When we arrived and I looked at the course I thought this is going to be fun but it looked a little short. I was unsure of how much I was going to enjoy it but when I got done with it, it was a blast. I was a little nervous when we first got started. I didn’t realize that we would be going that fast! Q: Which line was your favorite? A: The last one, the real long one was for sure! It was definitely the best. Q: How do you feel this experience could help in developing you as a future leader? A: Being confident with the course so that I can assist others in feeling at ease and comfortable about it and letting them know that it wasn’t going to kill them.
After completing the course the group went into town for some local cuisine before their next adventure; all-terrain vehicles (ATV) riding. 1st Platoon was the first to ride while 2nd Platoon lined up to take on the stomach dropping Slingshot ride. The Slingshot consists of two massive poles mounted to a platform, feeding two elastic ropes down to a two-person passenger open sphere cage. The cage is secured to the platform with

an electromagnetic latch with the elastic ropes stretched. When the electromagnetic latch is turned off, the cage is catapulted vertically with a g-force of 3-5, reaching an altitude of 250 feet. Soldiers of all ranks convinced and encouraged their fearful battle buddies that it was going to be okay, building esprit de corps and cohesion among the Soldiers. After everyone completed a turn on the Slingshot, 2nd Platoon and I traded out with 1st Platoon on the ATVs. For some, it was a first time experience controlling a vehicle made for rough terrain. Up to the challenge, Soldiers took off, skirting the clear

waters of the Nattnaeninshon River, driving through mud puddles and over rocky surfaces. After an hour of riding the group returned to bid farewell to the staff before boarding the bus back to Camp Casey. On the way back platoon leaders conducted Leader-Led After Action Debrief (L-LAAD). SFC Daniel Liegey of 1st Platoon started off by explaining what the purpose of WAQ was and asked the group what they thought about it. The majority of the Soldiers said SFC Daniel Liegey they were happy to see everyone
working together and how their confidence in themselves and their battle buddies was raised to a different level. “I think some of you were challenged today, some of you thought that you couldn’t complete the tasks that were before you, but with your battle buddies SSG Jason Rose encouragement and believing in yourself most of you overcame some of those fears and obstacles,” said SSG Jason Rose of 2nd Platoon, ending the L-LAAD. Throughout your Army Career you will be
challenged and asked to do things that you maybe don’t think you can do, but with encouragement and support you can accomplish anything. Always push yourselves to be better than what you think is possible,” he concluded. Warrior Adventure Quest has a wide variety of challenges to choose from; zip-line, white water rafting, bungee jumping, rock climbing, ATV rides, paintball and slingshot. DMZ The Joint Security Area (JSA) The JSA resembles a square measuring about 800 meters across. After the Armistice Agreement was signed, the JSA became a neutral location where guards from both sides were allowed to move about freely. It was the only place in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) where the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) was originally not clearly marked. That changed after North Korean guards murdered two United Nations Command (UNC) officers with axes on August 18, 1976. After the Ax Murder Incident, the MDL was marked within the JSA, and that marking system continues until today. The only place where border crossings are allowed is inside the conference buildings of the Military Armistice Commission (MAC). The MDL in the JSA is marked with one hundred and twenty six one-meter high white stakes at 10 meter intervals. Throughout the rest of the DMZ, the boundary is marked with MDL markers. Each side owns six guard posts in the JSA and no more than thirty five armed guards can be present on each side. The JSA is a venue for exchanges and negotiations between the North and South. A variety of political and economic issues, cultural conferences and Red Cross meetings are held in the JSA.

Observation Post (OP) Dora As the northernmost observatory in South Korea, OP Dora is located within the DMZ and provides the closest view of North Korea. Propaganda Village and Farmland of North Korea lay in view just ahead as do some areas of Gaeseong. The Gaeseong Industrial Complex and a bronze statue of Kim Il Song can be seen through a telescope.
DMZ Third Tunnel The Third Tunnel was discovered 52 km away from Seoul in the administrative district of Paju in 1978. It is 1,635 meters in length, 2 meters in width and 2 meters in height. The tunnel’s size would allow an army of thirty thousand fully-armed North Korean Soldiers to pass through within an hour. Trip to Incheon Wolmido Cruise Saturday, June 15
Wolmido Island was an island about 1 km off the Incheon coast, but with the creation of a new highway, became a part of the mainland. The name Wolmido Island comes from the shape of the island as it resembles the tail of a half moon. Because it is near Seoul and convenient transportation, many people visit here on weekends. Many cafes and seafood restaurants are congregated by the West Sea in Wolmido, so you can enjoy the food while viewing the sea. Enjoy spontaneous performances by street artists on the culture street. A not-tobe-missed tourist attraction at Wolmido Island is Play Hill. It’s not as large as other theme parks in Korea but the Apollo Disco and the Viking rides are famous for their first class thrills.

The
KISSING Booth
by Beth Reekles
Reviewed by Larry Cox Rochelle’s had a crush on Noah Flynn for years, but lately he’s been acting weird. He claims he just thinks of her as a little sister, the lifelong best pal of his kid brother, Lee. But he’s been acting weirdly overprotective, scaring away any guy who shows interest in her and even starting fights with those who get too close. An encounter at the school carnival’s kissing booth opens Elle’s eyes to Noah’s real feelings about her, and they begin a clandestine relationship. Elle is torn. She hates lying to her friends and family, but she can’t give
up the way being with Noah makes her feel, even if it means sneaking around behind everyone’s back and risking losing Lee, her best friend in the world. With secrets and lies piling up, is there any way to navigate this suddenly crazy life without someone getting hurt? “The Kissing Booth” treads familiar young-adult ground, but does so with an ease that is all the more notable for the fact that the author is a mere 17 years old. This debut novel displays a natural grasp of dialogue and a keen eye for the seismic shifts of teen emotions. Elle is a relatable heroine, sharp and a little sassy without being too glib, and generally honest with herself, even when she makes mistakes. Her enviable bond with her best friend Lee is refreshingly free of romantic angst. Noah is certainly no perfect hero — he’s got a rough reputation and a hot, often physical temper, and more than once his controlling behavior edges into the disturbing. At least he is called out on his actions, although perhaps not always as firmly as he could or should be. Still, this weighty core helps to ground this otherwise light and leisurely novel, a story about following your heart while not forgetting about your head.

Saving Money at Cost of Health by David Uffington Just because the doctor prescribes a medication, doesn’t mean we take it. A recent study by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that many of us avoid purchasing or taking the drugs that are prescribed for us in an attempt to save money. It’s no wonder: In one year alone, we spend more than $45 billion in out-of-pocket drug costs. The results of the CDC study were broken down into two age groups: those 18-64 and those 65 and older. Here are some of its findings: —Younger adults were twice as likely as seniors to skip needed medications to save money. —Some 23 percent of uninsured adults between 18 and 64 skipped taking their medications to reduce costs, compared with about 14 percent of those with Medicaid and 9 percent with private insurance. —About 13 percent of patients ages 18-64 did not take medication as prescribed, including missing doses, taking less medicine and delaying filling a prescription. —20 percent asked their doctor for a lower-cost medication — equally split between those over and under age 65. However, for seniors over age 65, those on Medicare-only were the largest group in both asking for a cheaper prescription and not taking the medication as prescribed. —2 percent bought prescription drugs from another country — equally split between those

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
over and under 65. —6 percent of patients ages 18-64 used alternative therapies — three times as many under as the over 65 group. Skipping doses of medication can have serious results, depending what the illness is. Antibiotics for infection need to be taken for the full course of treatment, or the infection can come back even stronger. Many drugs are dosed by patient weight or level of the drug in the blood steam. Overall, not taking prescribed medication results in increased emergency-room visits, poor health status, increased hospitalization and cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, to the tune of $290 billion per year. As an alternative to skipping medications, request a cheaper alternative, such as a generic. Ask for help with diet and exercise to increase levels of health. If you have insurance, inquire about a prescription rider to your policy to cover drugs. Research pharmaceutical companies that give free or reduced medications to those who qualify as low-income. Contact Partnership for Prescription Assistance (www.pparx.org, or call 1888-477-2669) to see if you qualify. Check FamilyWize drug discounts at familywize. org. Read the site carefully. There is a good chance your pharmacy will give you a discount, with average savings of 35 percent.
