Experiences of the heads Nowadays the communication channels have improved through out the world, by the help so called social media. However there are still some gaps prevailing. To look for every single thing situated in various places, reduces the level of interest of readers. And thats the main reason why I Danish Rana decided to launch a magazine named USB Blog. You can find every topic, updates on every aspect and everything thats going on around us!
“I have recently graduated from the Lyceum School and I am currently doing Bachelors in Business Administration from SZABIST. I have always actively participated in all my school events. I have attended an MUN, an experience I can never forget. Everything that I did boosted my confidence and enhanced my abilities. When I was given the opportunity to be an editor of this magazine, I grabbed it instantly! What could be better than supervising the writings of an actual magazine? As I had expected, my experience as an editor was epic. It gave me a great pleasure to see these aspiring youth, who believed in voicing their opinions. I learnt a lot from the writers and their pieces of writing. I thoroughly enjoyed working with this magazine.
Happyy reading!
Of course I felt nervous while editing the write ups to be published but this experience made me realize my caliber and the fact that I can supervise. The writings told me a lot about the youth’s perspective, their ideas and their potential. I could relate to them, laughed at their punch lines, agreed with them on certain issues, affirmed their ideas and helped them when I could. All in all, I loved it and would be keen to be an editor again if given the opportunity”

After the great success of the Islamabad and Lahore chapter, I thought to myself, why not launch it in karachi? The biggest city in pakistan? And here it is. Usb Karachi Blog. I am truly amazed on the efforts that these people have put in. And I hope all of you will enjoy this!
“To all the people who helped me a bit, a bit more and throughout this whole journey! Almighty Allah, my Parents, Mr. Danish Rana, the editors; Mussarat Fatima and Faryal Shuja, the entire editorial team and of course the designer of this Magazine. I don’t know where to start from but the last few months have been a roller coaster ride! There have been moments that made me smile and scream at the very same time. There were times when the technology misbehaved; messages were not conveyed properly, writers and other team members missed deadlines. But then, these were complemented with times when my inbox got flooded with encouraging words and eventually pictures and words fell into their right places.
“Our city, Karachi, is full of colors, lights, talent and brilliant ideas! Keeping that in mind, we decided to launch USB’s first Karachi chapter. The main purpose was to encourage the youth’s talent and show it around the globe! We have presented our culture, abilities, habits, famous spots and every single thing Karachi is made up of. We knew it since the beginning that everyone will be so thrilled to take part in this project! Talent tou bohat hai, all we need is platform to express what we possess! And hence, we decided to show our audience things from a different perspective; one they weren’t able to see by themselves. I believe that people should share their knowledge as much as possible because in someway or the other, spreading knowledge benefits our society. Be it any kind of knowledge! And truthfully I myself learned a lot in these past few months.
The basic idea of this magazine is to provide the youth of Karachi a platform to express the talent they possess. Hence be it the team members, people who are being interviewed, or the write ups are all somehow or the other related to the youth Other than USB Blog, I have worked for a number of organizations voluntarily. And usually all the hard work done was rewarded by giving just a certificate. As time passes more and more people join these organizations, and then nobody remembers you or your work! Unlike working for this magazine – this is different! It has our names embossed on it. People in future would know who exactly initiated the first issue of Karachi! This will remain forever...
I would like to thank Almighty Allah who made me capable enough to utilize my knowledge. Also, I would like to thank my co-editor Faryal Shuja and Ayesha Barry, the director of USB Karachi chapter. As the editor of this issue, I feel so proud of all the young writers; how hard they have been working in compiling their thoughts and expressing them through such powerful and convincing words. I wish all of them the very best for their future.
My entire team has endowed their best efforts, and I am extremely proud of them! It does not matter how less or more someone has worked, every single bit of contribution matters to me! I wish them all the best for the future, and hope to see them prosper. Good luck!
And finally, I’m truly thankful to Mr. Danish Rana, the founder of USB, and to USB Blog for giving us the opportunity to start a very informative and entertaining magazine!” Lots of Love to All!! x
As for my readers, this magazine is a package of happiness, sorrows, sarcasm, humor and everything you might look forward to! I have tried my level best to make it as equal as possible. And therefore, I expect everyone to appreciate the hard work of the whole team! Till we meet next, happy tooting!”
-Ayesha Barry, Director
-Mussarat Fatima, Editor “I would like to thank USB Blog for giving me an opportunity to push my skills to the next level. I wont take much of your time since I am too excited to say anything anyway, so turn over the page and enjoy what our team has collected for you!” Muhammad Saad Jumani, Designer

Music Hotshots; Uzair Jaswal Uzair Jaswal is the youngest artist ever to feature on Coke Studio. A student from Islamabad, Jaswal comes from a unique musical background. He is the youngest of three brothers who have managed to break into the Pakistan music scene. Umair Jaswal does lead vocals for Qayaas while the eldest brother, Yasir, is the lead singer for Irtaash - two underground bands from Islamabad. The youngest Jaswal has had a fast road to success with his smooth voice, relaxed stage presence and solid song writing skills. He wrote his first song when he was 16 and was lead singer for a band called Scar who performed alternative rock covers. Team Usb got a chance to chat with youngest coke studio sensation of Pakistan. 1. When did you first start singing? I’ve been singing for as long as I remember but the first time I got up on stage was when I was 14. Opened for ep infront of a jam-packed audience. 2. What did your family do to encourage you? My family’s always been very supportive. As two of my elder brothers were in this business before me it made everything very easy for me. My parents paid for most of my recordings initially and they always try their best to be their at the live performances aswell. 3. Who else in your family sings? Two of my elder brothers. Yasir who’s the voaclist for Call and Umair is the lead man for Qayaas. 4. Who are your musical inspirations? Growing up my biggest inspirations were my brothers. Watching them on stage, off stage, at home jamming, making music that’s what really pushed me to do the same and be like them. Also I’m greatly inspired by john mayer and his song writing.
5. What kind of music do you listen to today? I don’t have a preference. I enjoy all kinds of music. 6. What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player? Haha the embarrassing songs sound amazing when you’re with your friends. The most embarrassing song I have in my ipod I guess is “Chumma Chumma day day”. 7. Where would you most like to perform? Oh take me whereever and just put me on stage. I just love being up there no matter what the place is. But I would love perform at the Wembley one day!! 8. Who would you most like to open for? Noone anymore. I’ve opened for almost every prominent artist in Pakistan and I guess that time has passed and now I play shows headlining me as the main artist and it’s a great feeling. 9. If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing? Definitely acting. I’m actually doing that on the side anyway. 10. Do you play any instruments? I’d love to think that I do. I try to play the guitar but I don’t think I’m good enough to play while I sing on stage yet so that might take some time. 11. If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be? I would love to sing or do progressive rock. I used to be in a rock band once upon a time and I miss those days. Would love to scream and head bang for a change. 12. What genre of music can’t you stand to listen to? I think I can tolerate almost everything. 13. What hidden talents do you have? I can sit with a bunch of friends and not talk to them for hours and be busy on my phone if that counts as a talent? 14. Do you enjoy writing music and/or lyrics? Oh yea. It’s the best feeling when you’re in the studio singing a song that you’ve penned down yourself. Makes the vocal takes so much easier because you’re so familiar with each and every word. 15. You did your first concert in Lahore under the Usb events banner, how was the experience & do you have any intentions to work with them in near future? It was a great show, had some technical issues but that comes with performing live. Would love to come down to lahore again and perform for them. 16. You have a good fan following in karachi so when you are planning to do a concert here? Yes Karachi is been very kind to me since day one. Hoping to perform there and meet everyone very soon! 17. Any messages to your fans and Usb blog readers? I would like to thank them all for all the love and support. I believe that we as a nation are very brave and strong people. We actually live in a ‘thriller movie’ with an uncertain end but still even under these conditions the role that our youth is playing is commendable. So I’d just like to tell them to never back off and never let anyone or anything bring you down. I would love to quote The Great Albert Einstein here “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”
A journey to Taha n Rauhan *guitar chords* and there I saw them, sipping their lattes and jamming slightly. Guess the weather was too mesmerizing for them to stay idle. They can be really loud with vocals and guitars but soft music is surely on their fingertips. Yes, you are right!! We are talking about the amazing duo ‘Taha n Rauhan’ who initiated from Islamabad but have fans all over Pakistan. Be it Isloo, Lahore, Karachi or anywhere! Talking about their individual introduction the mellow, decent, Taha Rao; lead vocalist is originally from Multan. Whereas, Rauhan Siddique, surely the very self obsessed; has been carrying his guitar since childhood and is from Abbottabad. Although they have quite different natures and belong to different backgrounds, but the opposite personalities created an amazing compatibility and sensational music!
‘So how did it all start?’ I asked. Taha chuckled and they gave a look to one another. Stap! And the flashback started. Flashback filled with joy, fun, hard work, hurdles and of course criticism of all! ‘I want to know since the beginning, so yeah! Rauhan you look really excited, so tell us your part of the story!’ Well. Guitars have always been a passion to me, I guess since childhood. It’s like muscle to my tongue! Having been inspired by legends like Junoon, Noori and Strings the urge to learn guitars never slowed down. I think I just got ‘lucky’ because my family has been super supportive throughout. They have never been reluctant to support me in the matter of music! In fact, now when I tell my parents about a concert or even a gig, they get far more excited than I am!’ We laughed, ‘So, was it really that easy? Having parent’s support, getting guitars regardless with what they cost and the whole learning journey?’ ‘Obviously not! Things will never workout your way all of a sudden. It was mainly my father who encouraged and believed in me. That’s how I never lost hope! However, mama did support, but to the extent of keeping it a hobby only. She thinks in a lot mature way and wants me to settle down having a proper ‘long-term’ career. One might find her slightly typical but again, seeing me prosper to this extent makes my parents equally proud!’ ‘ Volah! And what about your music past before the idea of Taha n Rauhan came? Who did you learn guitars from? How did you improve?’‘You might find it weird but I never took guitar lessons! I always did on my own, and even now! If you look around the era of having an ustaad is vanishing away. Anyhow, when I started learning, there wasn’t much access to internet either, YouTube came into action a lot later. I purchased various books, followed my inspirations and somehow or the other learnt it! I guess one should have the itch to grasp the talent they really admire and yeah, things start to fall together. I firmly believed in myself and knew that THIS is what I want hence never even thought of giving up. As far as improvement is concerned, it just keeps on happening no matter what stage or age you are
at! Hmmm. Before I came to NUST, I have worked with Sarmad Ghafoor, did a number of stage performances and that pretty much summarizes Rauhan Siddique!
appreciating and it just boosted out!
And what about you Taha? How and when did you find out that singing is your passion?’ ‘Well, I won’t say music but random singing have been on my fingertips since College. It was one of my secret passions that I always neglected. And then later, my friends started
‘And what about you Taha? How and when did you find out that singing is your passion?’ ‘Well, I won’t say music but random singing have been on my fingertips since College. It wasone of my secret passions that I always neglected. And then later, my friends started appreciating and it just boosted out! I still remember trying my level best to emulate the way that my idols would sing; you know trying to match high and low notes. And when I did, I felt like I had reached the moon. I still get that feeling when I’m able to meet the notes properly.’ ‘So who were your idols? Where did you get your inspiration from?’ ‘I found myself intrigued by soul singers plus I grew up on the best of them, in a great era, when people used to listen to Noori, Strings and Coldplay. I was inspired by their junoon for music. Also, I grew up being really impressed by vocals more than anything else, and I firmly believe that music is basically about expressing one’s true feelings; feelings that cannot be expressed otherwise.’ ‘Ahan! So were your parents just as supportive as Rauhan’s were?’ ‘To be honest; not really. My parents weren’t supportive in the beginning but gradually they began to realize what this meant to me. However my brother always appreciated and pretty much helped me in all the aspects. My relatives on the other hand, were never in favor. I remember hiding guitars, leads and stuff when they came over. So yeah, I had a tough time. But families do understand eventually, there’s always some drama in the beginning!’ ‘Did you ever think that you’ll reach where you are today?’ Taha snickered, ‘Frankly speaking I never thought that I would or in all reality, could opt this as a profession. Singing was always something that I did for myself and not for others. But as
NUST started, singing became a self-routine and the aspiration to become a singer grew!’ ‘Hmmm. Now that we know that Taha got interested in Music after he came to NUST, so how did it start? How did you guys meet, form the band and etc.?’ R: ‘It’s funny how randomly we started our brand. It was probably the first semester I was playing guitar with one of my friends at hostel. That time, Taha and I were not even buddies, just hi hello. And suddenly he asked me if I know how to play ‘Tera mera Rishta by Mustafa Zahid.’It was unexpected and odd but we kicked off a small jam and surprisingly it went good. T: ‘Yeah and one of our friends; who is even our band manager now, gave us the idea to form a band. It was hard to digest because the university had just started and we were busy settling. Forming a band THIS soon was a big step! While we were still juggling with the decision Rauhan and I got many chances to play together. We performed at SOS Village, NUST Cultural shows and some small gigs. Although they were at a small scale but performing together just gave us a spark. And NOT to forget the criticism!’
“we never gave up. The negative remarks never enforced us to. Rather we kept the positive ones in mind and proceeded” -Taha
R: “Larkiyon ko impress karney kehliye bajate hein!” *sigh* and all those taunts we used to hear!’ R: ‘Then the journey to Lahore begun, we went in May to record our first cover. It was Snow
Patrol’s Chasing Cars and Yaheen by Uzair Jaswal. Nobody will believe but we were so new to the level of professional recording that we had no idea what metronomes and harmonies were!’ We laughed at the thought. ‘We didn’t even know the basics! And when we did, it was a torture. It obviously made us a bit guilty but Hassan bhai never lets us down!’ T: ‘True! A great personality indeed! I think outstanding talents, appropriate resources all goes to waste if you don’t have a friendly environment to work in!’ R: ‘But the story doesn’t end here! I guess last April we decided to launch another cover! This time the rikshaw ride to Lahore included Abdullah Qureshi too! Honestly, a hell of an experience! Amazing one indeed! We covered I want it that way by BSB and Linkin Park’s Numb.’ T: ‘Even though we had our holidays, but exams were just around the corner. We had to go through a lot of power failure issues. There were few hours per session, and vocals had to be done somehow! It was super tough, especially the vocals for Numb. Araam se sab zameen par baith gae thay while Qureshi and I kept on trying for hours and hours until we aced all the notes and lyrics correctly! And then the trail of events began!’ R: ‘The first gig was in early October in Abbottabad at Deema’s Shopping mall, at the Hujra Lounge. At that time there were a lot of security issues, concerts and other musical shows were not much in trend! But we did perform because it was an opportunity to avail! We didn’t expect much but around 50 fans showed up! And then a blast happened! We were called again to Abbottabad at the Roots College! The fan following increased steadily and yet another blast! Concert in Karachi! An amazing experience to perform at such a large scale! The Concert was held in February at Dawood Public School for their MUN.’
“let me tell you som thing there’s aways criticism vs. talent and it’s okay to put your positive energy out there, it’s okay to be proud ofyour work” -Taha
T: ‘And then there was The Music Latte which was Pakistan’s largest musical event on the social media by Walnut Studios. Other singers included Kanza, Abdullah Qureshi, Zahid Umar, College Road and etc.
R: ‘But unfortunately I wasn’t able to perform due to my Grandfather’s death and left for Abbottabad before the performance!’ T: ‘And that day I realized that Rauhan is more than just a musician, he’s like a pillar of strength. And I truly missed him while performing! Mmm... And that is it with our story.
We are right here, determined with our motive working on our first single currently.’ ‘I’m sure all your fans would be eager for it! Any motivating message to the youth out there?’
“there’s always some self-disappointment in the beginning of every work! Even Taha and I had to face a lot hurdles during this whole journey”
R: aahhh. I just want to tell that there’s always some selfdisappointment in the beginning of every work! Even Taha and I had to face a lot hurdles during this whole journey. We were called to perform on one day notice, which led to lack of practice -Rauhan and poor performance. The start was weird and frustrating! But it was a matter of not giving up, we didn’t, you shouldn’t either! And look at the result, now when we compare our recordings with the previous ones, there is a huge difference to see!’
T: ‘Also, in order to express what we were capable of we had to struggle a lot. We didn’t receive everything in a plate. Apart from all the cheers and well wishes that we received, we had to undergo a lot of negative responses as well. But let me tell you something there’s always criticism vs. talent and it’s okay to put your positive energy out there, it’s okay to be proud of your work. One would never know about their goals over night, it takes time. Like it took me! But once you’ve realized, just stick to it, be a hero for yourself!’ ‘You guys are truly an inspiration for the youth to follow! I on behalf of my team wish you the very best for future! Goodluck!’

Harry Potter fan? Yes? I have good news for you. No? It’s still good news. From an age where man wore leaves to cover up, we have moved to an age where in a few years time we probably won’t even feel the need to cover up. And no, this article is not about moral values.Recently, a miniature version of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak has been invented, which, according to scientists, will take us one step closer to inventing a real cloak of invisibility. As yet, the cloak, referred to as ‘3-D stand-alone mantle cloak’ in formal terms, works only in microwave light. In a lab test at the University of Texas, an 18 centimeter rod wrapped in the cloak was successfully made to disappear when microwaves were beamed at it. Strips of copper attached to a poly carbonate film form the super thin material of the cloak, which works on the phenomenon of scattering light rays and bending them beyond refraction limits. This recent development in technology is the best and the farthest that man has ever reached in his attempt to attain invisibility. This invention also stands true to what it is called, and is flexible and soft, just how a ‘cloak’ is supposed to be. “A lot of people have seen the invisibility cloak in the Harry Potter movies,” said Purdue professor Andrew M. Weiner. “In scientific research terms that is a spatial cloak. What we’ve done involves time cloaking.” The scientists hope that they can soon move a step further and invent a real invisibility cloak that will work in visible light too, and conceal the user completely. And to be honest, considering all the bright prospects of sneaking up on people, roaming around at school, bunking classes, and like stated above, not feeling the need to cover up at all, Harry Potter fan or not, one can’t not hope that they succeed! -Rida Zaki
SHAHID AFRIDI OUR VERY OWN HERO
The public jumps in cheers as Shahid Afridi hits a six! Our very own Lala gave us a come-back which proved that he still has it in him; he can turn tables around whenever he wishes to. Though a risk-taker, but underestimating Shahid Afridi is not a smart thing to do. Shahid Afridi is one of the most popular players of our team. A player who went through thick and thins but I must appreciate how brilliantly and unexpectedly Lala can display his skills and leave people screaming in joy. Fans chant his name in pride, whenever he is performing. The champion’s trophy 2013 went on without him but his performance in the Pakistan vs. WI series left people in awe; making those who were trying to get rid of him think twice. Shahid Afridi has been a great captain to us in the ICC world-cup 2011 and I remember the times when the Lala-revolution struck the whole Nation. He has been a great batsman to us, giving 11 sixes and 6fours in 37 deliveries as a record of fastest century which has not yet been undertaken by anybody else. He holds the record of most sixes and the highest six which raises hopes of his fans. No doubt that he has been a remarkable bowler too, taking wickets like crazy and making his name up the records. As Lala says: “I try hard and I back myself but I also want to thank the people back home who’ve been supporting me ... It’s not the time for me to just survive in the team, but to give a lot to the team through my performance I tried to stay positive. Whenever I got the ball in my zone I went for it. It was a good pitch for me to bowl on. I just kept it simple, and it worked.”
We all know that this fellow is brave on the field while playing. Getting to hear “Aaaaand it’s a wicket!” is blissful when the opponent team is being taken down. The gratification and cheer of that moment is u paralleled to any! And Lala has been the one to gift us those enthralling moments many times.
another said that “a six on the first shot means that it might be his last one!” Shahid Afridi is always a hot topic for discussion round the town. Bringing the trophy home was the greatest of all the joys that we Pakistanis can have and Afridi had privilege to be a major reason for it. Shahid Afridi is always a hot topic for discussion round the town. Bringing the trophy home was the greatest of all the joys that we Pakistanis can have and Afridi had privilege to be a major reason for it. The tall sturdy and handsome hero having four cute little daughters named Aqsa, Ansha, Asmaara and Ajwa have made home in the nation’s heart for long. As always, Pakistanis are emotional about this player too. We have heard news of his retirement and statements of the coach about letting him go which ignites the fire all over again. Watching him leave the team is still very saddening for most of us. The boom-boom revolution will continue to live and he will always be remembered in the future. We anticipate the best of Shahid Bhai and wish best of luck in forthcoming day!. -Syeda Urwah
We fail to realize the pressures that get built upon players with a massive fandom and politics that run on the pitch-life. It has often happened that Lala doesn’t give us the best! But hey, it is because we expect the best of him, ordinary performance saddens us. Sometimes, he may not be able to live up to his fans’ expectation which eventually leads to widespread criticism. These criticisms may prove beneficial to him, but to a certain extent only. However, negative criticism may de-motivate him and further leads to a poor performance in future. Last year, Afridi was a part of a Ramadan transmission for which different areas of Karachi were being visited by him. And thus, ours was chosen too. A lot of people I knew had gathered around the house, Mr. Boom Boom had an Iftaar with mohallay ki aunties and uncles who I thought were completely boring. They pushed one another just to get a glance of him – quite rude, but it clearly showed that people of all the ages adore him! Settling into a discussion with one of his fans I got the response that, ”If he scores a six at first ball he might perform well” while
Millions and billions of people, all over the world, use the social media on a regular basis. In the last five years, social media has gained evident popularity and is now counted as the fourth necessity of human beings; the first three being food, clothing and shelter. HISTORY But the real question that arises here is that, ‘When did social media actually begin?’ In order to track down the history let’s take a trip back in time and discover the history of social networking, and how it grew. You may be surprised to find out that it wasn’t Facebook or Twitter; who started it all. Back in 1969, yes, that long ago, CompuServe was one of the first major commercial Internet providers in the US. They used the technology known as dial-up to connect to the web. It was the dominant force during the eighties and some part of the nineties until others started to catch up. Once the email was launched in 1971, a few Social Networking Sites came up of which the first one was launched in 1984. Even after that in the 1980s and 1990s a number of sites were launched. All of which aimed to maintain continuous communication between old pals. It was basically from 2002-2004 that most of the social networking sites including Friendster, MySpace, Facebook and Flickr were launched. It was not until 2006 that Facebook was accessible to the people around the world and in the same year came ‘Twitter’. And then began an era which united everyone in the world irrespective of their country, age, sex, color, gender and economic status. Yes I’m referring to the age of social media sensation. When Facebook and twitter were first launched, they only had 200M and 32M users respectively. However the modernization of technology boosted this number up to an extent where the time spent on social media went from 88.4 billion minutes in July 2011 to 121.1 billion in July 2012, a nearly 40% increase. Growth in mobile apps was particularly strong. A British comedian once said, “If our god decides to pass an important message to the mankind, He wouldn’t think of using His messenger anymore. Instead, He will prefer Facebook ads.” I believe social media has aided marketing up to a great extent. It has been useful to the entrepreneurs who got a public platform to share their work and products so that they can earn their living. A research survey claimed that around 47% of social media users have engaged in social care, i.e. customer service via social media. Fully one in three social media users prefers obtaining their customer care in this manner. Most consumers are connected to the company via Facebook or Twitter. Shop! Shop! Shop!! Apart from that, internet shopping; linked with promotions from Facebook pages has already contributed enough to drain the finance of all our fashionistas. A twenty-eight year working woman from Sweden says, “These beautiful pictures online force me into buying stuff I would’ve never thought of purchasing otherwise, and the incredible discounts that they offer on shopping online are another additive reason.” But most of the desi fashion designer aunties have emerged who have set up Facebook pages with even funnier names such as ‘Pinky Pearly Couture Designer’, ‘Misty Rays of Couture Bridal’, ‘Coco Angel Designer Hubs’, ‘Auntie’s Creative Brand of Bridal Couture’ and so much more.
But most of the desi fashion designer aunties have emerged who have set up Facebook pages with even funnier names such as ‘Pinky Pearly Couture Designer’, ‘Misty Rays of Couture Bridal’, ‘Coco Angel Designer Hubs’, ‘Auntie’s Creative Brand of Bridal Couture’ and so much more. The list of all these designers is endless. The aunties are not designers exactly but they turn into one when one of their family members praises their dressing sense for the sake of flattery. And suddenly ‘aunty ji’ realizes to make finest use of the social media especially our very own Facebook and share her creativity with the world. One of the kids is forced to help her with the page and there goes aunty ji putting up endless pictures of ‘amazing and aspiring designs’. Usually these aunties do not have any clients but if one poor soul orders something by mistake, they make sure all the profit is earned from that one order. I would not even like to mention the feelings of the poor individual once the order is received. Sigh. WHAT ARE YOU DOING? HOW ARE YOU FEELING? WHAT’S UP? – Jeez! In this era, people keep their social media statuses updated by sharing unnecessary things with people for instance on which roads did they walk on, what restaurants did they pass on their way, what clothes did they wear and oh not to forget what food did they eat. These are the so called ‘Social Bugs’ and ‘Social Butterflies’. It’s their duty to tell the world that it’s raining in their city or the cricket team has won the match. Also, that the news reader stuttered or Veena Malik is featuring in the upcoming ‘item song.’ At times, there is statuses like ‘Oh my geee, I got s4, which is so big; bigger than my hand!’ Like. Seriously? I mean it has automatic eye scrolling for God sakes; it’s high time we grow up little babes! They post pictures of their latest purchases showing off the brand tags and names, but wait! They can also be replicas as they still have a designer logo on them. Let’s flip the coin now. The other side of the story is particularly funny. These people go to washroom and click around 100 pictures however not all but roughly 87 have to be uploaded. They go to restaurants and take pictures of the waiters (not at all an exaggeration) and upload them on Facebook with a caption, ‘Such a nice guy. He served us so well and on time. And he gave us extra ketchup too.’ As if the world needs to know which waiter to look for when visiting the particular restaurant. If they by mistake enter the kitchen and cook something, posting a picture is a compulsion!! It is the utmost responsibility of our ‘Butterflies’ and ‘Bugs’ to post pictures of everything. And I mean literally every thing!! From their mirror selfies to the shoes they wore, from their latest shopping collectibles to their messy homes, from the events they attended and the posters they see and the list goes on! POKE PLEASE? Another bunch of people whose mission has been aided by the advent of social media are the
‘fraaanshippers.’ These are the people who worship the creators of Facebook for giving them a source to stalk and stare at the beautiful ladies without being noticed. Where to find them? Well, click on the ‘other messages’ in inbox option and it will be flooded. A seventeen-year-old girl, Rida who is often bothered by such kind of people says, “Sometimes it gets really frustrating to be bothered by such people. The remarks they pass are sometimes very derogatory and should strictly not be used for girls from decent families.” Ahan! Fair enough. *CLICK* *CLICK* And mind you, even if one of them lays their hands on a DSLR it is a MUST to make a Facebook page with lots of pictures and most of them are usually found to be stolen by other photography pages, Flickr, Pinterest and Google of course. Such act by the upcoming photographers is a serious setback to the real photographers as their business is being affected. A 19-year-old girl says “I think having a DSLR is a cliché now, it’s not that expensive or that impressive! Thanks to our black market.” Another teenager Ammar who owns a DSLR says ‘‘Well, I love clicking around and to me it’s a medium of communication. Not that I show it off, but people should not criticize us either!” It’s TWEET time.. Twitter ranks to be the second most commonly used social networking site. Every second 750 tweets are made. A recent survey says that, ‘If Twitter was a country; it’d be the 12th largest in the world.’ Following and being followed by is a common trend on twitter. Usually you will get excited when someone follows you on twitter but what if the same happens in real life? You will actually get scared and run away. Funny, no? Twitter classifies to be a news sharing website. Anything you want to share with someone put it up on twitter and the next day whole world will know about it. #FOLLOWFORFOLLOW #FOLLOWFORLIKES. Eeerr! With the increased popularity of Instagram, we all know how important it is to show everyone the fun you’re having through pictures. Instagram has been the major source of constant source of pain to people who are forced to stare at the tiniest food particle they consume. They post pictures and fill others’ feed without the slightest hint of how much torture others’ belly suffer. Especially in the Holy month of Ramadan when the whole Muslim Ummah fasts from dawn to dusk, these pictures can actually be very disturbing. Another popular SNS is Pinterest which offers its users to learn and create new things. Positive sides of social media, may be? 97% of its users are women who keep pinning stuff onto their boards. You can learn to cook, sew, craft, mend and recycle stuff of all kinds. Usually ladies spend so much time just pinning inspiring stuff to the boards that little time is left to actually create them. Keeping these alarming statistics in mind, one can predict that there might come a time when we would be so much dependent on the social media that brides would say ‘I do’ online, you would hear the first cry of your child through Facebook, people would look for their spouses on web and decisions would be made giving preference to the number of likes on their display pictures. Or maybe we have already reached that point, haven’t we?
Find reasons,
not answers.. ‘A masked comedian who fights bad soaps and crying bhabis with his fail jokes.’Wait; did I just say fail jokes? No bro, No! Pir is the guy who would make the slightest talk turned into a sensible joke. He may seem to be a little sober because he actually is! But the level of humor in this chap is just outstanding. And being called by the U.S government to perform in different countries, giving a lecture on Islamic Politics in one of the universities, is terrific. I mean exactly how many of us actually get a chance like this? So, here is something that USB team collected about Ze Talented Ali Gul Pir…
Interview Q: Which part of Pakistan do you belong from? How did you spend your early life? I belong to an old town in Interior Sindh called Daadu. As for my primary education, I attained that in Islamabad from a school called Islamabad Model College for boys. After spending 9-10 years over there, we shifted to Toronto; Canada because the level of education was practically not good. And then after 6 years we moved back to Karachi, where I did my O levels, A levels and Bachelors in Film making at SZABIST. Q: So how was life in Canada? How hard was it to adjust in an absolute new environment? Oh boy, you will not believe how hard it was! I was living a country where commonly spoken language was English, and I did not know how to speak it. Therefore it resulted in my silence most of the time. Besides, there was a lot of drama and emotional blackmailing from my mother as I was unable to perform well in my academics.
“Saeein to saeein, saeein k grades bhi saeein”
After a lot of repetition of similar scenes, I realized how worse the situation is. And then there was a filmy moment when I told my mother that, ‘nai amma bus ab ap dekhain, main ab apko parh k dikhaun ga’. That was when I started working hard and then for three consecutive months I was -Ali Gul Pir an outstanding student and got a certificate in front of the whole school. But after coming back to Pakistan, I became an average student once again and the maximum grade that I got in my O levels was a B. ‘Saeein to saeein, saeein k grades bhi saeein’ Q: Have you always had a strong sense of humor that you chose Standup Comedy as your profession? I was not the kid who would just come into a room and start cracking random jokes. It generally took me time to open up; I was more of a shy person. You might not believe it but in my personal life, I am pretty much introvert. As for the comedy, I have always loved creating it from the society or the culture around me. When I was in Islamabad; the jokes were according to the people and environment of Islamabad, wherever I went the comics where according to that. Frankly speaking, I never try to do it; it just comes out naturally! Q: How did you start your career as a standup comedian? It was my last year at SZABIST when I began to do Improvisational Comedy and then worked in LiptonLight On Hai. Later on Saad Haroon; the one who initiated standup comedy in Pakistan, asked me to perform improvisational comedy in English hence I did a few shows with him and that’s how it started. Q: So did singing happen out of the blue? Or was it planned?
Hypothetically it did happen out of the blue but the consequences enforced it to! Basically what happened was that all my friends were moving abroad for their MBAs but I could not go because I wasn’t that well off. Hence, after a discussion with my mother I decided to move out of the house and live on my on. I absolutely believed in self-discovery and that could only happen when I lived independently. I thought may be it’s time for some self identity, so what if I can’t go overseas? And that urge of self-discovery made me realize the other side of Ali Gul Pir; which was singing. Initially I was writing a sketch for Waderai ka Beta to put it up on the internet. But as I began to write, it eventually turned into a song. Another credit that I would want to give is to the improvisational comedy; comedy without a script. It helps you think out of the box and it therefore helped me write this song in 1 hour 30 mins only! Although I did not have much money yet I called a couple of friends over and they helped me make the music, video and everything. You know, just doing something for the sake of doing it only! Q: How did your parents react to these plans? Did you go through some star-plus drama? My parents have always been proud of me no matter what. They have always supported in every context. Although they don’t always understand what I try to say but always agree to what I want. So it’s a blessing to have parents like these! Q: What’s the story behind all your songs so far? From Waderai Ka Beta – 2012 Saeen To Saeen – 2012 Taroo Maroo – 2013 and finally VIP – 2013. Is it a point towards our political and cultural system? Well, all these songs focus on our society. The character of Waderai ka Beta is an impact of the society. Political angle comes much later on. Then Taroo Maroo is what we commonly see in every mall these days. Although Taroo Maroo is not such a big issue; destroying lives but it is still a problem that a woman has to face which she should not. And yes, I definitely try to take inspiration from politics because that is how our society is formed; totally absorbed in it. I sing what I feel like. I try to have every song with some purpose, so that nothing goes to waste. Recently I launched a song called Justice; rough and dark! It is related to Shahezeb Khan and Shahrukh’s case. I always try to speak about reality; about things that we Pakistanis usually face and things that are lacking in our society. One of them is thought provoking factors! Q: What do you like most about your profession?
taken as smoothly as possible. One should meet them properly, take a picture or give an autograph and proceed doing what he was! If you get it too much into your head, that’s where the problem arises.
The fact that I make people happy and make them smile! I think happiness is super important for everyone in a country like Pakistan. Keeping all the negative vibes aside, it is crucially important for each one of us to share as much contentment as possible. I feel a sense of accomplishment when the chap cleaning my windscreen recognizes me and appreciates my work. It means more than anything, when the 95% of Pakistanis who are below the poverty line understand my message. Obviously if a Richie rich kid comes up for an autograph I would never turn him down but the families who are underprivileged are the ones with a spark!
Q: When you aren’t recording or performing, what do you do? I try to have fun! Even while I shoot, I keep that in mind. Then obviously the audience is going to enjoy watching it! Q: In your short journey in the industry, have you made more friends or foes?
Q: Both as a standup comedian and as a singer, who is your inspiration?
I have not made any foes; I don’t think so! There might be some people who don’t like me but I try to be positive towards everyone. I respect everyone in the industry. Apart from that I made a couple of friends too.
I grew up watching TV; and will always be a TV person! I love watching sitcoms, old shows like Simpsons. For standup comedy, I have always been inspired by Jerry Seinfeld; an observational comedian. Reason being that, this person has been doing standup comedy for the past 25 or 30 years and he has never abused someone while on stage. So I respect that! As far as singing is concerned, Sajjad Ali and Hassan Jahangir are my favorite!
Q: Your dream project? A film! A nice comedy, entertaining film! And not to forget, something that has to have a purpose.
Q: Why do you think you have been successful in this industry while many others fail? Haha. I don’t know. There is no such formula to success. However, if you ask why I became successful I’d say that I do what I feel like, I don’t do it for money, I don’t do it for success, I do it for the love of doing it! My motivation is to have a purpose in whatever I do and I hope to achieve that purpose! Long time back I heard this line in a movie that, ‘When you don’t have money, money is everything. But when you do have money, it’s nothing!’ Yes money is important, it is important to everyone; so is to me. I have to run my house and fill my stomach. But I do not think about ‘money and success’ while I do my work. It has never been my objective. My objective has always been to do things that feel right and that make me happy! Q: How difficult is it in your opinion to balance your personal life with your professional? When you become a public figure, it is really hard to keep your personal life actually personal. However, the key to maintain your privacy is to act like a normal human being. Even after 10 years, after more accomplishments, I would always prefer to keep my life simple like it has always been. People who get stuck in complexity about their image, that ‘I am a star and mein dhaabay par chai nai pee sakhta’ are most likely to get into complications. For instance, meeting fans is part of my job and should be
Q: There is such hierarchy in the entertainment world. Do you see people mistreating each other? Any industry is a reflection of the society. Our society has hierarchy; hence the industry has it too! Talking about the micro level, there is hierarchy in our schools as well. There are outcasts, geeks, nerds, burgers and the cool dudes. However, if one feels safe and secure and is not striving to be what he is not, than the hier Q: The pros and cons of being in this profession? The pros are that the people look up to you; if you use it right, they respect you a lot and give lots of love. Your fans meet you like you are part of their inner circle; there is acceptance and love everywhere! And the con could be that yaha waha se rishtedaar nikal aatay hein! People who avoided you before you were successful try to be your relative. Q: It is a dream to work with…. With someone who is not doing the same thing as I am. That way it will help us experiment more unique t
hings and come up with ideas that are truly innovative. Such as, I would love to work with legends like Amjad Sabri, Abida Parveen, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and my personal favorite Mr. Nasiruddin Shah. That’ll be super crazy! Q: Has social media by any means affected your career and personal life? Well, social media is my media; it is my medium of communication and frankly speaking it is all because of social media that I’ve reached where I am now. There is no censor or barrier while communicating through social media; it is transparent and shows a true picture of what things really are. To cut the long story short; it is the medium of present and not the future! Q: Your upcoming projects? Currently I am working on another song and trying my level best to do something more unusual. I do not plan ahead too much and rather take things as they come my way. Mmm a telefilm may be? Q: Where do you see yourself in the next five years? I see myself entertaining people! Q: Today a million hearts beat for you. Any message for the youth? Well, be positive. Never make money or success the major reason of why you are working. Always do what you are passionate about and make sure you are nice to everyone out there! This will make you a better person; no matter to whichever field you belong to.

RAPID FIRE I never get tired of ? Eating and watching movies What’s that one regret you don’t want to have in future? I want my existence to matter and don’t want to go empty handed One morning you wake up as Veena Malik, you will? Hahaha. I think I will enjoy it and probably do some more crazy shit! :D If you were asked to interview Tahir Shah, what would you ask? I have already interviewed him, and the first question that I asked was, ‘Sir, yeh eye to eye konsi mohabbat hoti hai, mohabbat dil se dil nai hoti?’ And he replied, ‘No, dil to koi dekh nai sakta na, you know love goes from heart to eye and then from eye, it goes to eye and that is eye to eye.’ What’s your proudest career moment? I would want to be a candle any my punch line would be, ‘Let there be light!’ If you could save only one thing from your house? My laptop, that’s where I read, write and watch! I cannot pick up the TV because it’s too big or else I would’ve saved that too!
Are you superstitious?
Yes. Although I am not sure if doing such things really make a difference but as I have been doing it since the beginning, I still do it! For example, I always pray before I go on stage to perform.

Crazy thing a fan ever did? Proposed me for marriage
Your crush on someone from the media?
I dated the ones I had a crush on but I won’t name them as I’m sure they won’t like being mentioned in an interview.
Name one thing that no one knows about you.
I’m a boring person in real life, and I can go hours without talking If you could have 3 wishes granted, what would they be? 1. Peace for Karachi; Pakistan 2. I get wings and I can fly! 3. I fulfill my purpose of life.
Karachi, the city of lights, is full of exuberant citizens who are bursting with life and always ready to get into the swing of things. According to Bernard Shaw, “There is no sincerer love than the love of food.” We, Karachites, possess this sincere love for food, indefinitely. Never afraid to try out new cuisines, some might call us overly adventurous. If you ever feel like spending an evening out, just relaxing and lazing around, the range of venues available to you would be endless. However, not every cafe, restaurant, or hotel would give you the kind of peaceful and serene environment away from the hustle bustle of a busy metropolitan city like Karachi. Gon Pacci is among those few cafes that would give you a wonderful eating experience along with a refreshing and peaceful ambience guaranteed to make you forget all your problems for a couple of hours. Just indulge your palate in the exquisite taste and blend of the food and surroundings. Addressed at main Khayaban-e-Shahbaz, the location is ideal. I, along with my friends, decided to try this cafe out for the express reason that it was on the main road. The outer structure is pleasing to the eye and well, I must say, the interior was far from disappointing. It was pleasant and nerve-soothing, if such a thing is even possible. Comfortable leather sofas lined the wall allowing one to just sprawl on them like in one’s own drawing room. Extremely cozy and soothing in its setting, the decoration and occasional touches of plants gave it a homey feel. The slow music playing over the speaker only added to its appeal. The staff was meticulous and attentive. We were met at the entrance and shown to a table near the window. By some peoples’ standards, Gon Pacci would be considered small and congested but not mine. I would not describe it as small but cozy and comfortable. Everything, from the service to the utensils to the food, was impeccable. Blessedly, unlike other eateries, we didn’t have to wait long for our lunch. We had Japanese spicy chicken with mashed potatoes. The presentation was admirable. The chicken was perfectly cooked and delicious. I have dined at many restaurants and cafes but one thing that I can say with full conviction is that the lunch that I had that day was simply exquisite. Future has still to surprise me, but the past eating experiences did not compliment the food the way Gon Pacci did, it was that delicious. Passion fruit drink finished off the main course with a bang. The dessert was just the cherry on top. Chocolate lava fondant did just the trick and I officially fell head over heels in love with Gon Pacci. It looked so beautiful sitting there on the plate, dusted with sugar that I just didn’t have the heart to break into it. The dessert was more delicious than the main course, if I do say so myself. After all, “anything is good if it’s made of chocolate”. Well, Jo Brand, you are absolutely spot on in your evaluation of chocolate. The melting chocolate lava that ‘erupted’ once the top layer was broken into, was totally worth the wait and would cause mouth watering recollections of my lunch at Gon Pacci for months to come. Suffice it to say that my experience at Gon Pacci is not one that I am going to forget any time soon and rest assured, Gon Pacci, I am going to sing your praises, at least till another eatery opens up to rival you.

Happenings Finding happiness involves no complicated procedures. Happiness is simple, and so is contentment. Smile at a kid, help an old man cross the road, hand over a bar of chocolate to a little girl, hug your maid when you return from a trip, and you will find happiness. I have been living in this world for eighteen years. During this time, I have had numerous experiences, and have known amazingly inspirational people, scholars, writers, politicians and warriors. But the greatest lesson of life that I have had ever learnt was taught to me by a couple of sick children over a span of five days. Five days: 20 hours: 1200 minutes: 72000 seconds. I spent a total of 72000 seconds at Karachi’s Children Cancer Hospital last summer, and during those 72000 I got to know “the secret to contentment”. Children Cancer Hospital works on charity. Though there are children from financially stable families too, most of the patients are dependent on the money which the hospital gets as charity and Zakat. On the first day of my volunteering, when I entered the building, I felt that I had crossed an invisible barrier that separated my world from the world that I had stepped into. This new world was a world of diseases, medicines, chemotherapies, drips, blood tests, cries, tears, fears, broken hearts, pain, and sorrow. But amongst all this, I also saw hope and gratitude. I met 5 year old kids suffering from cancer who smiled when they spoke, and when they were asked how they were, they replied ‘theek hun Allah ka shukar’. I met parents who looked at their little kids cry in agony when blood was drawn from their veins, and at the same time thanked us when we handed them the medicines. I saw children’s eyes lit up when we gifted them something as minor as a puffy sticker or a balloon and their faces beamed, waving enthusiastically whenever we passed by just because we had given them a kiss on the cheek earlier. We distributed simple gifts, painted the children’s faces, blew up balloons for them, arranged for a cartoon movie, drew pictures, and smiled at random people without any reason. And what amazed me most was that these extremely little acts of kindness seemed to matter the world to them. The kids gave us immense love in return for a picture of the sun on their bedside wall, and this was when I learnt how easy finding happiness is. Those five year old kids taught me to never lose hope, to always be grateful, and to spread love far and wide. And most of all, they taught me patience, and that to help someone is the easiest, cheapest and the most effective way of gaining contentment. “I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.” - Khalil Jibran -RIDA ZAKI

BREAKING NEW!
Smoking will not kill At the moment, around 70.2 billion people are living on this earth, and according to the experts, this toll will be increasing by another billion in the upcoming decades. In simpler words, the earth’s population is increasing at a tremendous rate. New homes are being built every day; forests are being cleared up in order to accommodate the growing masses. Food shortages and rising prices add up to this problem. But – bravo! Tobacco companies help control the population! Approximately 5.4 million people die every year from smoking. And because this number is not enough to control the ever increasing population, these companies are also involved in the effective advertisement of the pleasures of cigarette-smoking - mostly among the youth. After all, while these children are the future, however not as many are needed. Peer pressure also plays a major role here. Many young people, ignoring the harms caused by smoking, join their “cool” cigarette smoking friends, thus making the plan for controlling the population even more effective. Deadly chemicals like carbon monoxide, tar, nicotine, and many more are put to a good use when used in a cigarette. Even passive smoking, also known as secondhand smoking, alone kills up to 50,000 people. Smoking is also considered the leading cause for house fires adding to the number of unnatural deaths. Rising infant deaths due to pregnant mother’s smoking habits and dangerous lung diseases are being created every year, every little bit counts. In my opinion, cigarettes are a huge help when protecting the environmental conditions of our planet. Humans are growing so endlessly and rapidly that they are certainly going to put an end to the world’s resources. But with the help of cigarettes, this problem can be delayed without much trouble. What doesn’t matter is that smoking “kills”. At least they have a good time before they die a miserable death! -AMBER ASHFAQ
Dear Karachi, You and I, we have history together. A very long, eventful history that I just cannot separate from my being. You made me the person I am today and I don’t know whether to hate you or love you for that. I think you were my first love. You came along before all those books I read, all those movies I watched and all those boys with their cheesy smiles. You were just this vast landscape that I could map my dreams on and to tell you the truth Karachi, it was wonderful; beyond wonderful. Wonderful is an understatement, really, but I have never been good with adjectives. Each day I would find something new and each day I would fall in love with you a little more. I would fall in love with the brash, glittering place you were, the way your citizens greeted life with eagerness and determination and how even at the darkest times of the night you lit on, illuminating our lives. Sure there were some times when you were not all that perfect, when you were not always the happy place I was accustomed to but you always returned back to the way you used to be. You embodied the strength and determination to get back to the ways of our daily life after being exposed to terror and that, Karachi, made our relation so beautifully dysfunctional. That is what made you so perfectly imperfect. The misspelled signboards, the samosas making grease marks on the directory pages, the children dancing in the rain and the quiet music of the crashing waves that reverberated through your air. These were the little quirks of yours that made you so endearing, that made me so entirely besotted with you or maybe it was just the fact that you were mine. Either way Karachi, we were beautiful and to use the rather cliché phrase, ‘we were infinite’.ut times have changed Karachi. You are no longer the labyrinth of happiness and I am no longer the girl who trekked the labyrinth endlessly, putting her ears to the walls so that she could hear the stories that you had to offer. That time is gone, what remains behind is this monster that you have mutated into, one that feeds on its own blood. Your music is no longer how it was. The tinkling laughter has been replaced by gunshots, screams and cries.
B I no longer smell the clean scent of sunshine in your air, instead there’s smoke, reaching out with its tendrils, threatening to suffocate me. It terrifies me Karachi. It terrifies me to know that you are in there somewhere, submerged in violence and chaos, deemed unrecognizable. Your citizens are just care free. They stand there, glassy eyed, their vision bleary and their future unknown. Your lights, once so strong and illuminating, now flicker feebly as if trembling along in the fear which has now made a permanent place in the citizens’ hearts. And then there’s me Karachi. The girl who liked to sit on your side by the ocean, who wrote about you in tender words; sitting between tumbling coffee mugs and books with cracked spines. Your changed ways have made her jaded too. She is no longer innocent; she scrutinizes everything in fear, her heart filled with trepidation. Yet there is still a glimmer of hope somewhere within her, a fleeting vision of you rising from your own ashes like a phoenix. That is what gives her the strength to still walk through your winding streets, to pray every night. There is nothing she wants more than to see you better and fully healed, Karachi. Love, A citizen with hope.

Khussa and Peshawari Chappal
Unlike modern shoes, the Khussa is entirely hand made from the cutting of the leather to its intricate embroi dery and the most interesting part is its curly tip. Meaning the left and right are not cut in different shapes – they can be interchanged. Since these shoes represent the tradition of our country, wearing them is like wearing a bit of history. 4) Truck art Truly Pakistan flourishes with various forms of arts and crafts with the vibrant truck art being one. It is not just a way of pride and décor for the truck owners but it is about propagating messages regarding the cultural history and tradition, story-telling and even telling us briefly about the driver’s background.
TEN THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT PAKISTAN
5)
Apart from the power cuts, religious fragmentation, political dramas and the ever present threat of talibans, I don’t believe thinking of ten great things about our country can be anything but hard! 1)
Lahore and food street
If you’re the one seeking for scrumptious food along with rich taste of Pakistani culture, I suggest Lahore Food Street is the best place for you! All I have to say, it is a perfect combination of Food+Culture+Life. No doubt the street is a heaven for foodies, magically enlightened with beautiful, charming and colorful lights.
2)
Sindhi ajrak
“Ajrak” which means blue in Persian, is a textile item with rich crimson, deep indigo and white; combination of which represents unity of god’s of the sun, water and earth. Because of its high demand especially in the fashion industry, Sindhi Ajrak never fails to share happiness, culture and peace – all in one. 6)
a
Tv dramas
No comments, Pakistan is widely famous for its amazing TV dramas, my personal favorites being from Hum TV. Let’s admit it, Pakistani shows have good plots and the best part, they do have proper endings. If you know what I mean.
Handicraft
Pakistani handicrafts are quite famous among all the tourists because of their unique styles proudly showing off the timeless legacy of Pakistani culture preserved through ages. Each of the handicraft narrates its own story.
7)
Wagah border
No matter how unstable country’s situation is, the overjoyous spirits and the unbelievable unity of the Pakistanis at the Wagah border is what we are really proud of! Cheering for our border security forces definitely increases heart beats of everyone with the love of patriotism.
8) The ever mysterious tribe of the North Also referred as ‘The White Tribe of Pakistan’, Kalash tribe is a peaceloving pagan tribe living on the PakAfghan border. With their uncertain genetic origins, they are possibly the world’s most mysterious ethnic group. Many even believe they’ve descended directly from Alexander the Great’s armies. Proud of their warm, crimefree culture, sexually liberated women, colorful clothes and lots of festivals definitely make them the happiest people in Pakistan. 9)
Sweets
Its official: one cannot just hate on Pakistani sweets unless of course you happen to have a health condition in which sugar could be fatal. In that case, however, it’s just sad to be deprived of such pieces of heaven. With the intensely sugary barfis and gulab jamuns, Pakistani mithai once exclusive to Lahore is proudly a global phenomenon now.
10) Last but not the least; Pakistanis and their courage We have endured everything! From torrential floods to massive earthquakes; mad mullahs, political instability, drone attacks, ethnic rivalries, target killings, and are even bullied by the US. And yet our resolve remains undiminished, determination to overcome agitation, and hopes up high. It’s true! Nothing can lower the bravery and tireless passion of the hospitality-conscious people like us. Proud to be a Pakistani! -AMBER ASHFAQ

DAILY MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR FACE: Wash your face gently as if it was made of the finest silk fabric! Never rub it vigorously. It will damage the capillaries. Dozens of tiny veins twist dilate and break, creating red, bruise-like spots on the face. But unlike bruises, broken capillaries don’t heal and disappear over time then create wrinkles the long run! -For dry skin, seek out creamy and moisture-rich cleansers with seaweeds and plant extracts. Use water based moisturizers. -For oily and acne-prone skin use a wash with exfoliating fruit extracts and get rid of the dead skin cells by scrubbing twice a week. -For sensitive skin use natural cleansing oils and nonlathering products with no fragrances included. -A good sunscreen is must; it does not only protect from the harsh rays of the sun but also helps to keep the moisture locked in the skin. SPF 60 is highly recommended!
-Keep your skin hydrated. It does not always require the application of products. Hit the spa! Or get yourself some steam; keeping in mind that the “8 glasses of water a day” condition has been met. -Avoid too much sugary food, take a low sugar diet. You may crave for sugary food but they play a role in aging the skin and damaging cells. -Make citric-fruits a part of your diet as well as apply some natural citric-juice of these fruits mixed with honey water on the skin for freshness! ELIXIRS FOR THE SKIN! -Make a papaya smoothie with almond milk and raw honey to drink -Drink coconut kefir first thing in the morning -Sprinkle black sesame seeds over your salads before eating -Take hot water with lemon in the morning
-Grate some red cabbage and pair it with some carrots. Squeeze some lemon juice over it before consuming -Eat pumpkin seeds. Although high in calories, they are the only seed that is alkaline-forming; in this world of highly acidic diets, that is a very good thing. -Blend the watermelon and gulp it! This watermelon juice couldn’t be simpler to make. It’s nutritious, hydrating, cleansing and delicious! -Perfect on a hot summer day or anytime you want a cool, refreshing drink HEALTHY HAIR:
Go deep with a mask! Apply a deep-conditioning treatment and cover your hair with a plastic cap while showering. The steam opens up the hair cuticles, allowing moisturizing ingredients to penetrate. TRY GENTLE HAIRSTYLE Swept up swirls: Twist your natural curls into a loose bun, letting a few strands hang out. Top it off with a cute headband!
High topknot: gather all your hair high up on the crown of head while securing it with a bobby pin on the base
Messy side pony: brush hair to one side and gather into a low, loose ponytail. Lightly tease the ends for added volume!
SOMETHING FOR THE NAILS
START WITH YOUR SCALP
NAIL ART: Wondering what to do with your nails? Try this simple ombre nail art. Be creative and use three different shades of your favorite color.
-First thing first, get rid of dandruff! Apply oil on your hair as much as you can, possibly before every time you shampoo them. Try not to use the anti-dandruff shampoos, they contain way too much chemical which makes your scalp even drier. Herbal shampoos are the best in dealing with all kind of hair problems. Natural shedding on your scalp can clog pores and stop new growth.
STOP FUTURE DAMAGE In between regular trims, use a daily conditioning spray. It will keep your hair strong and givea pretty shine! It is not a good idea to comb your hair right after washing – not at all! This is because the roots are quite sensitive and weakright after a wash. So better let them dry completely! Diffusers are terrible to dry a recently washed out hair. But if you insist on using an electric diffuser wait for a while and then use it or use its cooling function. Stop hair from thinning. Harsh straighteners and different styles will cause strands to fall out. Or use irons that claim to distribute heat evenly at high temperatures. An intense amino acid treatment stimulates the scalp to help promote new growth.
Accent-Nail Steps: 1. Using the thin tip of a wedge makeup sponge, dab a blue ombré pattern starting with the lightest color on each side and ending with the darkest shade in the middle of the nail. 2. Paint a line up the center with a black striper. Wait a few minutes for the polish to dry, and then finish the look with a top coat. -SYEDA URWAH

Tip: Be careful with wearing horizontal stripes, the wider the stripes, the bigger you’ll look! If you wish to opt for neon clothing, don’t overwork your entire outfit. Nude, grey and navy go great with dramatic neon’s. Makeup and hairdo: Clean and tidy is out and smudged and messy is in! Metallic, ethereal or copper eyeshades are in trend along with cat eye makeup. Deep, vivacious, stained or lusterless lips are the key beauty basics this season. Subtle waves, low messy pony tails with side faux bangs, pinned curls and hair with lots of volume is in! Braids are still in style this season! Tip: For deep lipstick shades, make to keep bronzer and blush to minimum to look simple and edgy. For day time, pair your dark lips with a thin eye liner!
Hair color and dye: Dip-dye, low lights and Reverse Ombre (lighter color towards the root) are the main hair color fashion this year. Hidden or veiling color is the new trend.
Veiling creates hidden panels of color, showing a contrasting color when hair is flipped from side to the other. Face framing streaks or streaks in bright and vibrant primary colors are in. Red, sandy and smoky hair color shades are going to be a strong feature in 2013! Tip: use a leave-in UVA/UVB serum to protect your locks from the sun and conserve their color. East or West, glitter is back: Fabrics in metallic shades, gold and silver, is the in thing this season. Mix and match these glittery and shimmering tints with compatible prints and colors to create an alluring look. Jumpsuits and jackets in metallic shades are in too. Who wore it best 3) Alexa Chung vs. Audrey Tautou: 1) Caroline Flack vs. Mollie King: Glastonbury calls for something extra special from the festival wardrobe, which is no doubt why Caroline Flack plumped for this leopard-printed coat by Jaeger whilst on Worthy Farm this year. But it seems great minds think alike, as Mollie King stepped out in the same little number on exactly the same weekend back in old London town. Styling it up a little differently, Mollie went for sleeker silhouette with an LBD and tan accessories.
British factionists Alexa Chung opted for summertime chic in a pale yellow Valentino dress with spaghetti straps, paired with silver courts. However, where one impossibly stylish celeb leads, another follows and Audrey Tautou got the 2013 Cannes Film Festival off to a fashionable start in the same frock.
4) Alessandra Ambrosio vs. Zoe Saldana: Printed loose-fit trousers are the summer staple this season so it’s no surprise to see Victoria’s Secret angel Alessandra in this patterned Ella Moss pair. From one LA dweller to another; Zoe Saldana has also been snapped in these jazzy pants but who really wore them better? ... Hmmm...
2) Victoria Beckham vs. Lady Gaga: When VB attended our very own GLAMOUR Women of the Year Awards she took to the red carpet in this stunning black strapless jumpsuit by Maison Martin Margiela. But Victoria Beckham must have looked so good. Lady Gaga thought she’d get in on the act too! Wearing the jumpsuit slightly more fitted, Gaga transforms this beautifully tailored one piece into a more 50s style, playing up that cuts sweetheart neckline.
5) Rihanna vs. Gwen Stefani: Rihanna showed off her newly cropped locks in this directional monochromatic leather trousers and crop top look. However, Gwen Stefani must have thought that RiRi worked the look a treat, wearing the outfit herself some six months later to a movie premiere in LA.
6) Celebrity Michelle Obama vs. Huma Abedin: When it comes time to hit the campaign trail, there’s no better person to take style cues from than Michelle Obama. Huma Abedin, wife of New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner, took a page from the First Lady’s book as she appeared by her husband’s side in Harlem wearing a bright and breezy red and white checkered dress on July 14, 2013. It was the same look Mrs. O donned
7) Lily Aldridge vs. Kim Kardashian: Lily Aldridge liked Kim Kardashian’s outfit so much, she decided to copy it piece by piece! The Victoria’s Secret model was spotted out in New York City wearing the exact same Givenchy maxi dress. Both ladies kept things edgy by accessorizing with black leather jackets and peep-toe heels
Alive in Hearts - Nazia Hassan Sab se mehengi hai, chalti rehti hai, rukti nahi, Dosti. Teri meri aisi dosti. Dosti......The undisputed pioneer of the sub continental pop music, the beautiful young girl who sang ‘dosti aisa naata‘ as a child artist at her first ever TV show appearance, Nazia Hassan is someone who won millions of hearts at the tender age of thirteen. Never failing to amaze her listeners by the enthusiasm in her voice, the liveliness of her songs, the beauty in the lyrics and the innocence in her eyes .the glorious combination of all four would render the tapping of feet and the drumming of fingers to the beats of her songs for years to come. April 3rd, 1965, the day Nazia Hassan was born, was the day Pakistan was gifted with a truly precious human being. Nazia was not only a talented singer, she was also said to have a ‘heart of gold’, and worked tirelessly for multiple NGOs and social causes. Her work for special children, disturbed and distressed women in underprivileged areas of Pakistan, and her services to the community by setting up BAN (Battle Against Narcotics) to help those fighting with drugs, still stand unparallel in their own ways. Nazia beautifully merged what she was best at with what she liked best- Music and Social work- and produced a song ‘Nasha na karna’ to stir awareness in people through her music-something that was available to the rich and the poor, the educated and the illiterate, equally. Nazia was not someone who would gradually climb the stairs to success. She was more of somebody who landed on the top stair right after they took off. Thus, needless to say, her career as a singer was a success since the very beginning. Her song ‘Ap jaisa koi’, which she sang at the age of fiteen, was a huge hit throughout Asia, and made her a star overnight. This led to the release of a series of albums in the coming years-namely Disco Deewanay, Boom Boom, Young Tarang, Hotline and Camera Camera. Nazia was the first Pakistani to win a Filmfare Award and remains the youngest winner of the award in the category of Best Female Playback
Singer to date. When the music played and her voice boomed, it boomed throughout the world. Nazia’s popularity soon crossed borders and reached foreign lands. Even till this year, more than a decade after her death and more than two decades after the release of ‘disco deewanay’, the song was reused in a recent Indian movie and contained chunks of the original track. This was a clear proof of how she continues to live in each of her fans despite not being with us anymore.
They say the good die young. Nazia Hassan was a truly successful singer, a social worker, and a beautiful, loving woman who was full of life and enthusiasm. If what they say is true, her death was timely- Nazia was too perfect to live long. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1996, and underwent1 immediate treatment. After vehemently struggling for four years with cancer, Nazia Hassan, the conqueror of so many hearts failed the final battle and passed away on the 13th of August, 2000, causing Pakistan to lose a truly precious human being. Nazia’s fans from all over the world still remember her fondly, and speak of what a valuable asset the world lost in the shape of her death. Nazia’s brother, Zohaib Hassan, spoke through tears in an interview after her demise, ‘She believed she could reach the hearts of millions through music and singing, and could do good humanitarian work. Her charitable work, most of which I became aware of later, showed me how deeply humane she was.’

Take Me To The Moon
MaanSal Studios started off back in 2010 and since that very day it has been a source of quality entertainment on the social media. It is a cocktail of ravishing photography, cuddly comics and giggling videos. It was MaanSal Studios that introduced the concept v-logging in Pakistan with its first video which became viral the moment it was released on the social media and not just this but today MaanSal Studios and Salman Parekh, the owner and founder of are the sensation of million hearts and are followed by thousands of people across the globe. With his naturally fun-loving nature and amazing sense of humor Salman can put you through fits of laughter. Team USB Blog recently had a chance to interview this talented young individual let’s see what he has to say.
Interview 1. Take a tour down the memory lane and tell us how did MaanSal Studios start? When I was around seven, my elder sisters posed for me whenever I brought a camera in front of them. No matter how horrible the pictures, I took, might have been, they always complemented and encouraged me to continue clicking. That was my first ever push towards photography. As time passed, I started taking pictures at my dad’s offi ce events whenever I accompanied him to work. At that time, I was using a normal digital camera. I then made my page on Facebook so that people could get easy access to their photos. That was the beginning of MaanSal Studios. 2. Starting off as a photographer initially how and when did you come to the v-logging side? The main reason why I bought my first-ever DSLR was to make videos. But I wasn’t sure of my skills as a vlogger then since I had no experience. Therefore, I stuck to taking pictures. And I’m glad I did because photography has really helped me polish my skills and provide ground work for the success of my v-logs. 3.What is your educational background? I’m doing my undergrad in Marketing and Management from University of Sussex, in UK. 4.If not a photographer and a v logger then what would have you been? Haha, I could have been a philosopher since I spent most of my childhood watching movies of people who spoke in riddles. 5. Running out of ideas is very natural and when such a calamity strikes what is that keeps you going? Believe this or not, studying helps. Whenever I’m studying for an exam, new ideas just start pouring in. In other words, whenever I’m studying, I’m distracted. 6. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? That’s easy; walking on burning coals and diving into freezing water. 7. Of all the MaanSal’s videos which is your personal favorite? WTF Indian Dramas. I’ve always been against these shows since they’re one of the major reasons why we Desis label each other so quickly.
8. How did you convince your friends into working with you? If your idea is good, everyone gets excited to be a part of it. So there isn’t much need for persuasion. 9. When you’re not busy clicking and shooting what are you doing? Sleeping. I love sleeping. Or hanging out with my friends. 10. Your favorite line? One that is invented by you only. Be cool Baji. 11. What is that one quote you live by? No matter what happens, life goes on. 12. Five things people don’t know about you? As a kid, I spent 5 years in an Islamic School to attain religious education. Since Nursery till now, I sleep in my all of my lectures. Pakola is my favorite drink. I love to sing, but wasn’t gifted with a melodious voice. I am really badly addicted to candy crush. Your current and upcoming projects? I will let it be a little of a surprise, but it’s a collaboration with Danish Ali. 13. Your recipe for success? When you have such loving fans by your side to support you through it all, you don’t really need a recipe of any sort. 14. When in public places do people recognize you? How do you feel when fans come up to you for an autograph or a picture? Haha, I’m not really great with that kind of interaction and I run out of words to say and end up saying stupid stuff. Haha. 15. Any funny fan stories? Once someone came up to me at the mall asking me if I was Salman Parekh, I really made an angry face and went like who’s this weird guy, he has made my life hell, every other person thinks I’m him. She got scared and walked away haha which I didn’t really expect. 16.Where do you see MaanSals five years from now? The plan is not to have a plan. 17. You are a role model to many. Any message to the youth? Just know that we all have that one thing that makes us better than the others. Never stop searching for that unique skill. The path of self discovery is truly magica
