THIS IS USC AIKEN The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.

When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.
PEACH BELT CONFERENCE Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06.
Dave Brunk Commissioner
Ken Gerlinger Assistant Commmissioner
The PBC is in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the Final Four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the National Championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the National Championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 14 sports, six for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and women’s track and field.

THE USC AIKEN CONVOCATION CENTER As USC Aiken Athletics has grown, its place in context of the University as a whole has evolved. With heightened importance comes the need for new tools for success. The Convocation Center, opened in April 2007, is the grandest tool yet that will equip the Pacer programs with opportunities to succeed. A vision some 15 years in the making, the construction of the facility came to fruition only because of the dedication and hard work of campus and community leaders. Funding for the $17 million, 100,000 square foot facility came from both public and private sources. With a groundbreaking ceremony on December 9, 2005, construction in earnest began with a 14-month time table laid out for the project’s completion. With China Construction as the builders of the project, Chinese National Television was on hand for the historic groundbreaking. In addition to giving the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice and play, the athletic department as a whole has expanded space and modern offices in which to operate. Visitors to the building are greeted initially by the beautiful John C. Troutman Family Lobby, highlighted by the Lew Perkins Wall of Champions. The lobby works as a museum of Pacer greatness, both past and present. The Wall of Champions is a dedication to Lew Perkins, the former USC Aiken basketball coach and athletic director and former Director of Athletics at the University of Kansas. The Wall of Champions is a timeline of USC Aiken athletics.
The lobby also includes trophy cases dedicated to each sport, and a hanging banner featuring a prominent student-athlete from each sport’s past. The main arena has a seating capacity of 3,600 for athletic events. The men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams all practice and hold home events in the arena, which has stateof-the-art sound and scoreboard systems. One practice floor is located on each side of the arena above the main competition floor, allowing the possibility for up to three teams to practice simultaneously. Overlooking the main competition floor is the VIP room, which gives the department a facility with a beautiful backdrop to host meetings, conferences or banquets. In addition, the building consists of eight spacious locker rooms, including ones dedicated for the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. The first weight training facility exclusively for the studentathlete is also housed next to the athletic training room.

SEASON OUTLOOK The 2013 USC Aiken volleyball team is one of the youngest in recent years, but it could also be one of the best during head coach Glenn Cox’s tenure. The squad features tremendous leadership from the returners, but the team also has eight newcomers that bring in valuable experience. “We have a team that knows what it takes to win at every level,” Cox said. “The upperclassmen are talented and understand how to win in the Peach Belt Conference. Although we have just four upperclassmen, the team could be better than people think, although eight are newcomers.”
Outside Hitter At the outside hitter position, Cox has just one student-athlete with playing time returning to the squad. That comes in the form of senior Leah Rodgers, who finished third on the 2012 team in terms of kills per set average. “Leah is one of the best athletes on the team,” Cox said. “She has a lot of experience and has outstanding leadership qualities on the court. She will be looked to for an increased role this year” After Rodgers, three freshmen will be vying for valuable playing time at the position. Taylor Stratton is part of a trio of USC Aiken newcomers that won an AAU National Championship in 2011. “Taylor is a solid hitter,” Cox said. “She is a gamer that has good, solid club experience.” Fellow rookie Shawn Hotson pounded home over 1,000 kills in high school. “Shawn is an outstanding ball control player,” Cox said. “She has the ability to anticipate what will happen on the court and is a step ahead in her game.” Another freshman that will bring a lot to the position is Brittany Faulkner. She guided her high school team to an undefeated record and a state title as a senior. “Brittany is an all-around super athlete,” Cox said. “She is a very athletic outside hitter who is a valuable asset to our program.”
Leah Rodgers
Sheila Walsh
Defensive Specialist/Libero The Pacers have one collegiate experienced student-athlete as a libero, but also have two qualified rookies on the roster. However, all three are new to USC Aiken after the graduation of three solid student-athletes. Sophomore Monica Cardona has a year of Division I experience to her background. Cardona played her rookie season at Winthrop University in the Big South Conference. “Monica brings a wealth of experience with her,” Cox said. “She saw a lot of great competition at Winthrop and knows what it takes to win as she won a state championship in high school.” Rookies Danielle Mercer and Katie Toman will also battle Cardona for the libero jersey. Mercer led her high school team to a spot in the state championship game while Toman was a two-time competitor at the Junior National Championships. “Danielle is an all-around ball control specialist,” Cox said. “Katie is a solid, super-quick defensive player. Both bring tremendous qualities to the team and will be huge assets.”
Setter The Pacers have only one returning setter with collegiate experience, which comes in the form of junior veteran Sheila Walsh. A year ago, she registered a team-best 610 assists. “Sheila is a former USC Aiken Freshman of the Year,” Cox stated. “She is a good all-around player and a great defensive player.” Battling Walsh for playing time will be rookie Amanda Bologna, who played on an AAU National Championship team. “Amanda is a solid all-around setter and will be competing for a spot from the first day of preseason.” “Having two superb setters allows us to open up our offense. There are times that we could run a 6-2 offense where both will see time on the court.”

SEASON OUTLOOK Right Side
Schedule
Returning as the right side hitter is reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Ashley Diedrich. During the 2012 season, she led the team with 303 kills and sliced defenses with 57 aces, which was the second-most aces in the league. “Ashley had an outstanding freshman season,” Cox said. “She can control the game from her position and can open up things for her teammates. With her ability and experience, the sky is the limit for her.”
USC Aiken opens its campaign at the Francis Marion Invitational and brings in an abundance of talented teams to its own tournament before getting into league play. “We have tremendous regional competition,” Cox said. “By playing so many non-conference regional teams to begin the season, it allows us to see where we are in the region. We have some great non-conference matches that will prepare us for competition in the Peach Belt Conference. If we play well, with our schedule, it should put us in the top eight of the region and we would be able to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.” With the experienced upperclassmen and the multi-talented newcomers, the Pacers have the right mix of student-athletes that could help Cox reach the coveted postseason tournament.
Middle Blocker In the deepest spot on the team, Cox has four student-athletes that are good middle blockers, but each can also slide over and play the right side position as well. Senior Endea Ellison is coming off a season where she had 18 blocks but helped alter several others. Junior Hannah Tierney registered a team-best 77 total blocks. Sophomore Alyssa Johnson stymied opponents with 56 blocks. Ashley Lind brings winning experience after registering an AAU National Championship victory. “Endea is one of the best athletes on the team,” Cox said. “She is one of the quickest players to the block and can alter shots. “Hannah’s size is great asset. She has good anticipation and can move quickly at the net. With two years of experience under her belt, Hannah’s best years are in front of her. “Alyssa is a good all-around middle blocker who will also see time at the right side. She never leaves the court and can hurt defenses from anywhere. “Ashley has a quality swing and will compete for time immediately. Her competitive fire is great and she has played against and defeated some of the best in the country.”

Glenn Cox Head Coach Sixth Season Glenn Cox completed his fifth season in charge of the USC Aiken volleyball program in the 2012 season. In five seasons under Cox, the Pacers have compiled a record of 79-78. Prior to joining USC Aiken, Cox had spent the previous six seasons as the head coach at the Savannah College of Art & Design, an NAIA institution in Savannah, Ga. USC Aiken concluded its fifth season under Cox in 2012 with an overall record of 18-13. The Pacers were ranked as high as eighth in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Volleyball Rankings. The Pacers finished the 2012 Peach Belt Conference regular-season with a record of 7-7. Picked third in the 2012 preseason poll, USC Aiken’s third-place finish marked the Pacers’ highest seed since claiming the No. 1 seed en route to Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championships in 2006 and 2007. Three Pacers garnered plaudits from the league office in 2012 with Samantha Lukralle leading the way by being named the recipient of the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Elite 15 award (highest GPA). In addition to being honored as the PBC Elite 15 award winner, Lukralle was also selected to the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball District Three First-Team for the second straight year in 2012. She was tabbed to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference Second-Team. Joining Lukralle on the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Women’s Volleyball District Three First-Team was Ashley Farwell, who claimed the honor for the first time in her career. USC Aiken freshman Ashley Diedrich was tabbed as the Peach Belt Conference Co-Freshman of the Year. She became USC Aiken’s second winner of the award all-time. The year would end for the Pacers in the Quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Championship as they fell to Augusta State 3-2. The 2011 Pacers had two team members, Samantha Lukralle and Shannon Byers, selected as All-PBC performers. She was named the PBC Libero of the Year along with being chosen to the PBC All-Tournament team and the All-Region team. Shannon Byers was selected to the PBC All-Conference First Team. Three Pacers were named to the PBC All-Academic team with Chelsey Kight, Ashley Farwell and Lukralle earning all collecting all-academic honors. The 2009 USC Aiken volleyball team finished the season with a 15-18 record, going 5-9 in Peach Belt Conference play. USC Aiken acquired victories over both of the teams who would eventually meet for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championship. The Pacers were the only team to beat Flagler in league play as the Pacers downed the Saints, 3-2, at the Convocation Center on Friday, Sept. 18. just one day later, USC Aiken was one of just two teams in the Peach Belt Conference to down the Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic during the regular season, acquiring a 3-1 win over AASU on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Convocation Center. The Pacers were ranked as high as No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional rankings. USC Aiken was the second highest ranked Peach Belt Conference squad with Flagler ranked one spot higher than the Pacers in second. Armstrong Atlantic was one spot lower than the Pacers in fourth. The Pacers won eight of 10 games from Sept. 4 through Sept. 19. Flagler would advance all the way to the Final Four of the 2009 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship. Four Pacer volleyball players were tabbed to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team. Cedeno and Chelsey Kight were both named to the first team. Whitney Tabbert was named to the second team, while Megan Disney was named to the third team. The Pacers jumped out to a program-best 4-0 record to begin the 2008 season before continuing their early season success by claiming the crown at the USC Aiken Volleyball Invitational at the Convocation Center. USC Aiken would not be able to maintain the torrid pace down the stretch of Cox’s first season at the helm,
but nevertheless the Pacers ended the year going in the right direction. In his six seasons at SCAD, Cox led the Bees to a 141-82 overall record. In his final four seasons, his teams won fourstraight Florida Sun Conference championships, won four-straight NAIA Region XIV titles and advanced to the NAIA National Volleyball Championships in Columbia, Mo., four times. Cox claimed the NAIA Region XIV Coach of the Year for his final four seasons. In the classroom, the Bees earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association/Game Plan Team Academic Award in every season under Cox. Prior to his time at SCAD, Cox served as the head volleyball coach at Athens Academy in Athens, Ga. His teams won back-toback undefeated region championships and held an overall record of 69-27 (.719). Athens Academy finished third in the Georgia High School Association’s Class AA/A State Tournament in 2000 and second in the 2001 tournament. Before becoming a head coach, Cox served two seasons as an assistant coach at Valdosta Sate University, an NCAA Division II institution in Valdosta, Ga.
