The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully

accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview After a tremendous run to the NCAA Tournament last year, head coach Jerry Snyder looks to take his team back to the promised land again in 2017. Although the team is young, the Pacers have a wealth of experience and brought in some extremely talented studentathletes with the mindset of not only making the 2017 NCAA Tournament, but also making some noise in the NCAA Southeast Region.

Sophomore Taylor Allen was used primarily as a pinch runner last year, but with her hard off-season work she could see more playing time.

“We have a young, but experienced team,” Snyder said. “Our goal is always to win a national championship. We have a lot of smaller goals that all lead to the same ultimate goal.

Newcomers Hanna Hyder and Courtney Strauss will also battle for playing time in the outfield this season.

“Right now, the No. 1 small goal is to be in the top three offensive categories in the Peach Belt Conference. If we are there, we know that the pitching and defense will get it done. Historically, we’ve always been good pitching and this could be the best pitching staff we’ve had here. The team is four deep and each pitcher compliments each other when they throw.” OUTFIELD Snyder returns a tremendous amount of experience in the outfield, starting with redshirt-junior Brielle Jungblut. During her first two seasons on the field, Jungblut patrolled left field but will look to make the move to center field after the graduation of all-everything outfield Sarah Montei. Jungblut showed off her outstanding speed last year not only on the base paths, but also in the ground she covered with diving catches, including a run-stopping snag in the win over nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. “Brielle will need to provide leadership in the outfield,” Snyder said. “She’s been in the program and knows how we do everything. Brielle understands the speed of the game and is a coach in the outfield. Brielle brings great speed to our team and we will look for her to step up this year with increased playing time.” Sophomore Leah Boghosian played in 37 games last year, earning 34 starts in right field. With more confidence after a year of collegiate competition, Boghosian could have a breakout season in 2017. “Leah had a decent freshman year,” Snyder said. “She learned a lot and has matured. Her thought and decision making will be better this year. Leah is probably faster this year and will play with more discipline and confidence. She can play all three positions in the outfield with her speed and good arm.” Chandler Terrapin is another student-athlete that could see playing time all over the field, including in the outfield when she’s not pitching. Terrapin brings a big bat to the line-up as noted by her towering round-tripper in the PBC Tournament semifinals against Young Harris. “With the strength of the bat she has, we have to have her in the line-up somewhere,” Snyder said.

“Taylor has really grown since her freshman year,” Snyder commented. “She gives us a lot of speed on the bases and is getting better every practice and should see some playing time.”

“Hanna had a good fall,” Snyder said. “She is really starting to figure out the faster pace of the collegiate game. Hanna gives us a good left-handed hitter in the line-up and should see some playing time in right field. “Courtney is well on her way to working herself into a starting position as a freshman,” Snyder stated. “She’s talented and coachable. Courtney has good speed and a strong arm and bat. She came out of a good program at North Augusta H.S., and we look for big things in her future as a Pacer.” INFIELD The Pacers have an experienced infield but also have a lot of talented newcomers. Although replacing Samantha Chubb at the hot corner will be tough, Snyder has a dyad of suitable replacements. The pair of Kathleen St. Peter and Janee MCarthy will battle for playing time. “Kathleen has really improved from the fall season,” Snyder said. “Third base is the hardest position to transform the game from high school to college, but she has done well there. Kathleen has the potential to be a big bat in the line-up. McCarthy saw some spot duty last year on the base paths, but could have an impact in the field this season. “Janee worked really hard in the off-seasons,” Snyder stated. “She has been playing really well at third base and her bat is coming around. Janee should see some playing time this year.” At shortstop, sophomore Sarah Timmerman saw an abundance of time there a season ago. This year, she will be pushed by rookie Sarah Sams. “Sarah Timmerman was fortunate to get all the playing time as a freshman and now has more confidence in the field,” Snyder commented. “She brings speed on the bases and it will be her job to get on base so we can utilize her speed. “Sarah Sams has done a terrific job so far at shortstop,” Snyder said. “She’s getting better offensively and should see a lot of playing time.”

Snyder returns a pair of dynamic student-athletes in Julianne Leduc and Lyndie Dorgan at second base. Both were solid a season ago. “Julianne and Lyndie will share time at second base,” Snyder stated. “It’s hard to say which one is better because both bring a lot to the line-up. It’s a head-to-head battle and Lynide will also see time in the circle.” At first base, Snyder has been fortunate to have solid performers there including senior Magan Thrower and sophomore Hannah Price. “If Magan contines her offensive onslaught from the last third of the season, there’s no way we couldn’t play her,” Snyder said. “Hannah’s bat is so good when she’s not pitching, we have to figure something out to keep the bat in the line-up.” Junior Sydney Murphy and sophomore Kristan Lowery will be behind the plate this season. Murphy has played shortstop and in the outfield since her arrival, but has caught her entire life. Lowery brings a wealth of experience to the squad. “Sydney is moving behind the plate for the first time in a couple of seasons,” Snyder stated. “With the ability that both bring to the table, the position is locked down between them. It’s a head-to-head battle right now and we are looking for offensive fire power from both student-athletes. They will most likely take turns catching throughout the season.” This season, utility standout Lilly Shoaf will redshirt. PITCHERS With the graduation of Taylor Morgan, USC Aiken will be looking for another go-to pitcher this season. Thankfully, Snyder has a full stable of hurlers once again. New to the team is junior transfer Hayley Elkins, who spent her first two seasons at Charleston Southern. For the Bucs last season, Elkins registered 11 victories and three saves while throwing 13 complete games. “Hayley has the potential to be as good of a hitter as Jessica Strickland was,” Snyder said. “We have to keep her in the line-up so she will either pitch, be the designated player or play third base.” Terrapin will also see time in the circle again this season. After working hard in the off-season, fans could see the same force that was a standout coming out of high school.

Sophomore Hannah Price will see time in the circle again in 2017. Battling an illness during her rookie campaign kept her from assuming much time in the circle last year, but the Seneca, S.C., native has a lot to offer with great command and speed. SCHEDULE “We have another good schedule,” Snyder said. “The Peach Belt is always tough and we play a lot of teams that made the regional tournaments last year.” The Pacers open their 2017 slate with a tough regional doubleheader against Limestone on Feb. 11. The teams split a pair of games in Gaffney a season ago. The following weekend, USC Aiken heads to rival Newberry for a doubleheader. USC Aiken continues playing away from home Feb. 21 when it heads to Converse for a doubleheader. Last season, Snyder picked up his 700th career win in the second game against the Valkyries. The Pacers return home for six straight contests before entering league play. USC Aiken hosts 2016 NCAA Tournament foe Pfeiffer (Feb. 24), Claflin (Feb. 25) and St. Augustine’s (Feb. 28). USC Aiken opens PBC play at UNC Pembroke (March 4) and Francis Marion (March 5). During the week of Spring Break, Snyder’s team hits the road for doubleheaders at Queens (March 7), Lenoir-Rhyne (March 10) and Carson-Newman (March 11). The Pacers close out Spring Break with a home doubleheader against PBC foe Armstrong State (March 12). Two days later, the team hosts Flagler (March 14) before entertaining Montevallo (March 18). The squad stays out of conference play on March 23 when it heads to Barton before returning home two days later for Columbus State (March 25) and Georgia Southwestern (March 26). The Pacers travel to Claflin (March 29), North Georgia (Apr. 1) and Young Harris (Apr. 2) before returning home for rival Augusta (Apr. 7). USC Aiken plays at Georgia College (Apr. 9) prior to entertaining Erskine (Apr. 13). The following day, the Pacers conclude the regular season at rival Lander (Apr. 14). USC Aiken returns to Milledgeville, Ga., for the PBC Tournament Apr. 21-22. The squad will look to make another historic run as it did in 2016, becoming the first No. 7 seed to ever reach the PBC Championship game.

Dorgan did some spot pitching last season and was remarkable. Last year, she went 4-1 on the year with a 2.63 ERA. While boasting a 6.5-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, Dorgan threw an absolute gem in the four-hit shutout at Columbus State.

Currently the coach with the longest tenure in the Peach Belt Conference and the only coach in the league to have coached since the PBC’s inception, USC Aiken head Softball coach Jerry Snyder enters his 31st season at the helm of the Pacer program in 2017. After the 2016 season, Snyder now owns a career record of 720-673-2. Despite having one of the youngest teams in the region in 2016, Snyder guided the Pacers to the NCAA Tournament. His squad was the No. 7 seed in the PBC Tournament and he led the team to the championship game, becoming the first No. 7 seed to do so. He had a pair of all-region honorees in Sarah Montei and Taylor Morgan while Montei picked up first-team all-conference accolades. His team tied the PBC record with two grand slams in the win over Columbus State. The squad swept nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne in the regular season and also

The sixth Snyder team to claim 30 or more victories in a single season, the 2009 Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the top-20 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position at USC Aiken in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995. Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the record of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program. “The biggest highlight since I have been here is that my players have graduated and have gone on with their lives to become successful people,” Snyder said. “You should measure your success with what your student-athletes do in the classroom, instead of what they do on the field.” The program has posted 20-win seasons in 19 of the past 20 seasons.

Coaching the hitters, Jones helped the squad tie the school record for home runs (37). At the plate, her team tied the PBC record for grand slams in a game and tied a school record with a four-homer barrage in the PBC semifinal win over Young Harris.

2017 USC Aiken Softball

Team Review Prior to the start of the 2016 softball season, the University of South Carolina Aiken program was picked to finish sixth in the conference. The team had a strong core returning but also yielded one of the youngest teams around due to the fact it had 11 newcomers to the squad, including eight rookies. Despite having several freshmen on the field at the same time, head coach Jerry Snyder’s team thrived in the early portion of the season. The upperclassmen re-wrote the record books while different student-athletes made big plays in each game. By having several players come through in the clutch, the team did not solely rely on one person to win a game for the team. When it came to crunch time, USC Aiken persevered, going 5-2 in extra-inning contests. On three occasions, those wins came over nationally-ranked foes, bolstering the strength of schedule. The team, although it did not have any true home-run hitters, tied the school record for round-trippers in a season and tied the PBC mark by smashing two grand slams in the same game. The Pacers also faced adversity and had their backs against the wall heading into the postseason. Yet, the team played some of the most inspired softball in recent history en route to earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. The squad had some of the best to ever don a Pacer jersey in uniform for 2016 in terms of the school record book while the team put together several nice pieces of the puzzle with newcomers. Samantha Chubb, Andrea Daring, Sarah Montei and Taylor Morgan all left their legacy by putting their names all over the record book while current returner Magan Thrower has already solidified herself as one of the best in school history for roundtrippers and in the field.

two-for-two with a run scored. In the circle, Morgan struck out 10 batters and scattered eight hits en route to the win. The nightcap saw the Pacers overcome an early 3-0 and 5-1 deficit. Down to their last out, the Pacers’ Sydney Murphy blasted a double off the left field wall, scoring Kelli Shealy. Trailing 6-5 in the eighth, Montei reached on an error as Jungblut scored to knot the game. Then, Chubb rocketed a double to left field, scoring Montei for the game-winning run. USC Aiken swept Claflin and Coker before splitting with Limestone. On Feb. 21, the team hosted Converse for a doubleheader. It was one to remember as Snyder picked up his 700th career win in the sweep. The two victories were solidified by shutouts from the right arms of Lyndie Dorgan and Hannah Price. After losing a pair of games at Pfeiffer, the squad bounced back to take a pair of one-run games from Francis Marion. In the first game, Murphy was hit by a pitch, which drove in the gamewinning run. The Pacers held off the Patriots in the second game as Morgan came in for her second win of the day. The squad split a pair of games against region foe Mount Olive as Montei drove in Samantha Peka for the lone run of the nightcap. The victory pushed the Pacers to 12-4 as they headed into March. Chubb’s five RBI off two home runs (including a grand slam) carried USC Aiken to a split against Claflin. Then, Chubb’s bat stayed hot as she launched another grand slam in the win over Carson-Newman as Morgan struck out 11 in the 4-0 shutout. Heading to Flagler for a road league series, the Pacers won the opener 4-2 in eight innings after Chubb belted a two-run shot. The second game showed the mental toughness of the team.

The season started off extremely well for Sndyer’s team. It posted seven straight wins and notched nine victories in the first 10 outings of the season. Despite the winning record, it won four games by a mere run.

Trailing 7-4 entering the seventh inning, Thrower led off the frame with a single through the left side of the infield. After Dorgan came in as a pinch runner, Daring walked to put two runners on. Julianne Leduc was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lilly Shoaf pinch hit and Sarah Timmerman came back into the game for Leduc.

The opening game of the year saw newcomer Leah Boghosian notch the first run of he season while she also posted the game-winning RBI. The game also marked the return of Brielle Jungblut, who redshirted in 2015. The redshirt-sophomore went

be the game-winning run in the 8-7 contest. The two wins there gave the team confidence heading into a doubleheader against nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. Against the Bears, Morgan tossed all 10 innings, giving the team a 3-2 win when Chubb doubled home Jungblut and Montei. Trailing 3-1 in the second game, Snyder’s team erupted for a five-run fourth inning. In the stanza, Chandler Terrapin scored. Then, Murphy launched a three-run homer that plated Taylor Allen and Jungblut. Price’s RBI single completed the scoring as Terrapin struck out five to pick up the win. USC Aiken went on the road and demolished Erskine by scores of 9-0 and 9-3. That marked the first of 10 straight road games for the squad. After losing a pair at Augusta, the team hit the road for Columbus and hurled back-to-back shutouts for the sweep. In the first game, Daring and Thrower each hit grand slams, tying the PBC record. Morgan was dominant, striking out six while giving up just one hit in the contest. Dorgan was outstanding in the second game, giving up just four singles in the complete-game shutout. Boghosian drove in Allen for the only run of the game, which came in the second inning. The team split at Georgia Southwestern as Morgan fired a one-hit shutout before dropping three more games. After losing to Young Harris in eight innings, the Pacers bounced back to take the second game on Montei’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

The Pacers picked up a 9-1 win over UNC Pembroke but lost the last three regular-season games and ended up in seventh place in the league. Heading into the PBC Tournament, the team knew it had to make a run in order to garner a postseason bid. With one down in the seventh inning, Daring blasted a two-run homer to knot the score at 3-3. In the eighth, Price tripled in Murphy and Terrapin’s sacrifice fly made it a 5-3 victory. The win sent the squad into the semifinals for a rematch with nationally-ranked Young Harris. The team’s bats were out in full force in the 11-3 win. The squad established a tournament record by launching four homers in the game, including Terrapin’s grand slam and one by Morgan. Thrower and Murphy also had round-trippers in the win. The victory allowed the team to reach the PBC Championship, but it also established the squad as one of the eight best, earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Pacers lost a pair of games in the regional, but the 2016 team proved it could overcome adversity, play through pain, overcome any obstacles and leave a lasting impression on the program. With a number of student-athletes returning, in conjunction with a strong signing class, the 2017 team should once again be a force in the league and make a push for its third NCAA Tournament berth in four seasons.

Two losses to top-five North Georgia did nothing to dispel the squad. Instead, it bounced back and played inspired softball with a 10-1 win at Montevallo before posting a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
