This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Jonathan Banks, who spent time at the hot corner in 2016, will also vie for playing time at first. “Brian is a good left-handed hitter in the middle of the line-up,” Thomas stated. “Jonathan can play first or third and we recruited him to play first base. Both are very experienced.” Last season, Skylar Mercado locked down second base while Joey Smithers saw time as a defensive replacement during his rookie campaign. “Skylar led off most of the season in 2016,” Thomas said. “He is a good offensive and defensive player who has great experience and there’s no substitute for that. Joey could play here – as well as at shortstop. He made great strides since last year and will push for a lot of playing time.” At shortstop, USC Aiken returns Tyler Ammerman, who started every game last year. Smithers will also vie for playing time here. “Tyler is a good defensive player,” Thomas sated. “He started every game and is really experienced in a key position. Offensively, we are looking for him to improve upon last year. Joey is a big asset who can play at either position at any time.” Banks saw plenty of time at third base in 2016. The Coaches Phil Disher Assistant Coach Phil Disher enters his second year as an assistant coach with the USC Aiken baseball team. In his first year, Disher’s offense helped carry the team to the NCAA Southeast Region Championship game. The team batted .321 and established a league record by smacking four home runs in a single inning. The squad blasted 81 home runs and had several among the league leaders in round-trippers. His coaching helped Zach Moon earn first-team All-America honors. Senior Chaz Pal was selected in the 38th round of the MLB Draft. Disher came to USC Aiken after spending three years at Georgetown as the hitting coach. He helped the Hoyas improve from a .255 team batting average in 2013 to a .279 mark in 2015. In his three seasons, Georgetown totaled 306 extra-base hits, including 123 in 2015. The Hoyas’ offense ranked third in the BIG EAST in 2015 in batting average and was second in the league with 23 round-trippers. Four student-athletes established career-high marks in homers in 2015. Disher mentored Georgetown’s first-ever BIG EAST Player of the Year, junior catcher Nick Collins, who batted .370 and led the conference with 78 hits, seven homers, 114 total bases and a .540 slugging percentage.
worked with the hitters and catchers. Disher was selected twice in the Major League Baseball Draft, first by the San Francisco Giants in the 45th round in 2007 and then in the 15th round of the 2008 draft by the Houston Astros. During his first year of professional ball, he was tabbed the MVP of the New York-Penn League while with the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y. He finished playing professionally with the Astros’ organization when he was forced to retire due to an injury. Andrew Werner Assistant Coach Andrew Werner is in his first year as the pitching coach at USC Aiken. “Andrew Werner stood out to me from the second I read his resume,” Thomas stated. “When you talk about what we do here at USC Aiken and compare it to his background and fundamental approach, you couldn’t have gotten a better fit for our program. I had tons of choices to become our new pitching coach and Andrew Werner by far seemed to me to be the logical choice.” Werner, a graduate of the University of Indianapolis, had a standout collegiate career and pitched professionally. From June 2009-Sept. 2010, Werner was with the Windy Cindy Thunderbolts. There, he was in the top three of all major pitching categories, including wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. From 2011-2012, Werner was with the San Diego Padres. He reached MLB in less than two years after being signed out of Independent baseball. With the Padres, he was voted the Pitcher of the Year in High A Lake Elsinore and AA San Antonio. Werner helped the squad win a minor league championship in High A Lake

Elsinore in the California League. He averaged 7.8 strikeouts per nine innings and held a 2.50 strikeouts-to-walk ratio. From 2012-15 he was with the Oakland Athletics organization. Werner helped the squad win the Texas League Championship for the Midland Rockhounds. In 2013, he led the PCL in innings pitched and wins. Werner was with the Ottawa Champions Baseball Club in 2015 as a starting pitcher/player-coach. There, he led the Can-Am League in wins and innings pitched. Werner participated in fan meetings, was an active member in the community, helped deciding starting rotation roles and assisted with player-personnel decisions. Werner landed as the recruiting coordinator/head assistant coach at Illinois Central College prior to accepting the job at USC Aiken. There, he made all gameday decisions regarding the pitching staff, implemented throwing programs, created strength and conditioning programs and ran baseball camps to help fundraise for the baseball program.
The Coaches Ben Donath Assistant Coach Ben Donath is in his second year as assistant coach with the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team.
Donath was a two-year standout for the Pacers after transferring from Middle Georgia.
Donath helped guide the squad to a .321 batting average and a berth to the NCAA Southeast Region Championship game. The Pacers registered 201 extrabase hits, including 81 round-trippers.
As a junior, he played in 52 games, earning 36 starts while batting .295. He had 10 multi-hit performances that season to go along with seven multi-RBI contests. Donath’s four triples led the team and were tied for fourth in the PBC.
In 2015, he was an assistant coach with the USC Aiken softball team.

Team Review It marked one of the most impressive runs for any University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team under the guidance of head coach Kenny Thomas. The 2016 campaign was one of ups and a few downs, but the run the squad made to reach the NCAA Southeast Region Championship marked how good the Pacers were. The team may have been down during games, but it was never out. Several times over the season USC Aiken overcame a late deficit in order to punch the winning ticket. Seven contests went extra frames and USC Aiken was victorious each time. Other times, the team was flat-out dominant, whether it was due to pitching one day or with their bats a different game. Zach Moon earned All-America honors while he, Joe Marlow, Mitchell Price and Max Schoen garnered all-region honors. In fact, the squad was so strong, those four, Erik Davis and Chaz Pal picked up all-conference accolades while guiding the squad to a third-place finish in the PBC regular season. The Pacers were ranked as high as No. 5 nationally and were in the rankings for much of the season. Thomas’ team had a 10-game winner in Marlow while Davis hurled one of the most impressive performances in recent history with his two-hit shutout against No. 9 Florida Southern. The staff was great throughout with Nick Jobst accounting for six wins and five saves while Nick Yobbi tallied six victories. Trevor Hutto and Connor Riley chipped in three wins apiece. Although the pitching staff was strong under the watchful eye of assistant coach Nolan Belcher, the Pacers were nothing to laugh at when at the plate.
After posting a solid 8-2 win on opening day against Lincoln Memorial, Thomas’ squad suffered a setback the following day. Despite trailing 4-0 in the final game of the series, the squad rattled off three runs in the seventh and one in the ninth before winning in the 10th. That extra-inning win catapulted the Pacers to a 10-1 record. During the run, the squad swept PBC rivals Armstrong State and Lander. In the middle game of the series against the Bearcats, USC Aiken found itself down 7-1 before an eight-inning third frame gave the team a 9-7 advantage. It was a back-and-forth affair that saw each side take the lead. Tied at 17 in the bottom of the eighth, Brian Parreira crushed a pitch for a solo shot and an 18-17 victory. The squad suffered a pair of losses at Georgia College, but bounced back to win the final game of the series. Including that victory, the team won 20 of its next 22 contests, skyrocketing the Pacers up the national polls to No. 5. Throughout the season, multiple student-athletes took turns stepping up for the team. Parriera, Moon, Price and Jobst all picked up PBC Player/Pitcher of the Week honors. Despite losing 10 of the final 17 games, including a pair in the PBC Tournament, the Pacers secured the No. 4 seed in the Southeast Region due to its strong season. The ranking was justified and USC Aiken quickly showed it belonged in the postseason after knocking off Tusculum in the opener. The Pioneers were co-tournament champions out of the South Atlantic Conference.
USC Aiken had a .400 hitter in Schoen while eight more batted over .300 for the season. In fact, three others hit over .275 during the 40-win campaign.
After giving up an early run, Marlow settled down and was dominant the rest of the way. Although the team trailed 1-0, Moon drove in Pal for the game-tying run in the sixth prior to scoring on a wild pitch a little bit later for the game-winning run.
Moon drove in a team-best 68 RBI after smacking a team-high 16 round-trippers. The Pacers blasted a school-record tying 81 long balls compared to 33 for their opponents. Additionally, the four homers in one inning against Paine established a new Peach Belt Conference mark.
On May 21, the squad faced off against No. 5 and top-seeded Columbus State. Price and Pal scored in the top of the first for a 2-0 advantage. A Tyler Ammerman homer pushed the margin to 3-0 before the Cougars would eventually tie the game at 5-5 with three runs in the eighth frame.
The squad also drove in 423 runs while scoring 456. The Pacers tallied 1,044 bases and slugged nearly .500 collectively (.496).
With the score still at 5-5, Ammerman registered a three-RBI single in the 10th inning to send the Pacers to the winner’s bracket championship game. For the contest, Ammerman went

Team Review three-for-four with a career-high five RBI. After suffering a loss to Lander, the team bounced back to oust Tusculum in an elimination game. Unlike the first game, the Pacers secured a lead early and never looked back, jumping out to a 5-0 lead through four innings. The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the fifth, but Thomas’ team tacked on two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth for the win. Yobbi registered his second complete game in the victory, sending the Pacers to the region title game against Lander. Although USC Aiken ended up dropping the contest, the squad showed its resilience in the game. It was never out of the tilt and showed the squad is a force to be reckoned with. It marked the last game for Douglas Ard, Davis, Cole Lee, Schoen, Jared Felix, Hutto, Marlow and Pal, but they each combined to make a strong, lasting legacy. USC Aiken’s baseball program has been strong since its inception and 2016 continued to enforce that. With the returners Thomas has, 2016 could just be a big step to where the program is heading.
