This is USC Aiken ď„–
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.
An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College 4
Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview After back-to-back Elite Eight appearances and earning the school’s first-ever berth in the Final Four, head coach Vince Alexander heads into the 2014-15 season with high expectations. Alexander’s squad had 10 seniors on the team a year ago and returns just three student-athletes. However, a dynamic group of newcomers, along with the returners, has Alexander’s hopes up for the 28-game regular-season schedule against arguably the most competitive league in Division II.
Point Guard Last season, USC Aiken had a first-year starter at the point guard spot and earned a berth in the Final Four. This season, Alexander will have to start another newcomer at the position with the graduation of DeVontae Wright. Junior Andre’ Anthony could be the solution at the spot. A transfer from Beaver County CC, Anthony earned second-team All-America honors last season after averaging 21.7 points, 5.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds. Over two seasons, Anthony led the school to a 54-5 mark. “Andre’ is an outstanding basketball player with a high IQ,” Alexander said. “He is a tremendous leader. Andre’ will provide the leadership and outstanding play that we got from DeVontae.” Freshman David Belfield is coming off a solid career at Charlotte Catholic H.S. There, he was a two-time winner of the Coaches’ Award. “David is a young guard who has a very high IQ for basketball,” Alexander discussed. “He has worked very hard to learn our system and should contribute to the team this season.” Junior transfer Jordan Foster played his first two seasons at Western Illinois. The 6-0 standout saw action in 61 games, including 13 starts. He canned 38.2 percent of his shots from downtown. “Jordan reminds me a lot of Re’mon Nelson,” Alexander mentioned. “He is very strong and makes good decisions with the ball. Jordan is a very good shoot, explosive guard and a great athlete. He is also a very good leader.” Rookie Rashad Lewis is coming off a stellar high school career. At Valdosta H.S., he earned Region Player of the year honors as a senior while netting 21.2 points per game. “Rashad is a very talented young man,” Alexander stated. “He is very tough and does not play like a freshman. Rashad is extremely quick and is able to get to the rim fairly easy. He makes good decisions and will have a big impact on the team in his first year.”
Shooting Guard Redshirt-Junior Keith Belfield transferred after spending the first two seasons at Furman. There, he scored a career-high 15 points in just 16 minutes of work in a win over Appalachian State. “Keith is an outstanding player,” Alexander said. “He has the ability to knock down the three-point shot or create off the dribble. Keith is an explosive guard who knows how to score.” Freshman Tyreece Brice is coming from nearby South Pointe H.S., out of Rock Hill, S.C. There, he was an all-state honoree and a three-time all-region selection while netting over 1,000 points for his career. “Tyreece is a very explosive, talented guard,” Alexander mentioned. “He shoots the ball well and is able to take you off the dribble and get to the rim where he can create opportunities for himself and his teammates. Tyreece is one of the better freshmen we’ve had come through the program.” Junior Grant Harris will see plenty of time this year at the point guard, shooting guard and small forward positions. He has played in 52 games during his first two seasons with the Pacers, having helped the team earn back-to-back Elite Eight appearances. “Grant knows what it takes to win,” Alexander said. “He has improved his jump shot tremendously and is the one player that can play three positions on the court for us. I’m looking forward to some great things from him this season.” Albert Miller III is a freshman from nearby Newberry H.S. There, he earned all-state accolades as a senior while guiding his team to a state championship. A two-time all-region and all-tournament team selection at the Dorman Classic, Miller has a good understanding of the game. “Albert comes from a winning program,” Alexander stated. “He understands what it takes to win and is a proven winner, having taken Newberry H.S. to a state championship as a senior. “Albert is a very hard working guard that can shoot it with range.” Redshirt-sophomore Gavin Stephenson sat out last year after transferring from VMI. As a freshman with the Keydets, Stephenson appeared in 22 games on a senior-heavy team, but accounted for a 1.55 assist-to-turnover ratio. “Gavin is a strong guard who has great knowledge of the game,” Alexander said. “He understands what we are doing because he redshirted last year. Gavin should contribute to the program this year. 10
Newcomer Christian Baez will redshirt this season. He hails from Cesar Chavez H.S., in Washington, D.C. There, he was an all-district performer. “Christian is a strong player,” Alexander stated. “He will have a year to learn and grow in our system. Next year, he will have an impact on our team.”
Forward
Redshirt-junior Dominic Early transferred, along with Keith Belfield, from Furman. With the Paladins, Early drained 41.9 percent of his shots from the floor as a sophomore. During his rookie season, Early appeared in 29 games. “Dominic is an explosive wing,” Alexander discussed. “He has the ability to get to the rim or knock down the open threepoint shot.” Junior Hendrix Emu appeared in 23 games last season, his first with the program. He was able to gain a lot of knowledge from the 10 seniors. “Hendrix has improved tremendously,” Alexander said. “He has gained a great deal of confidence. Playing against Paul Larsen all of last season has paid off. Hendrix is an explosive athlete who can score with his back to the basket or facing it.” Tavarez Hall transferred from St. Augustine’s. There, he played in 28 games and drained 48.5 percent of his field goals in addition to drilling 83.3 percent of his foul shots. “Tavarez has the ability to score on the block and from outside,” Alexander stated. “He is a strong forward with good handles. Tavarez should be able to help us out on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.” Rookie Caleb Stewart had a year at Fork Union prior to enrolling at USC Aiken. He was a two-time first-team Section 2 honoree at Mekeel Christian Academy. “Caleb is a tremendous shooter with great range,” Alexander mentioned. “He is one of the smartest players in the program and should make significant contributions as a freshman. Caleb has the ability to block shots because of his 7-2 wingspan.”
Schedule
Nov. 14-15 where the team will take on Mount Olive and Barton, The Pacers host Southern Wesleyan Nov. 18 in the home opener before hosting the USC Aiken Classic Nov. 21-22. Alexander’s squad will take on Elizabeth City State and Winston-Salem State before hitting the road for a pair of games the last week of November. “Our tournament is great,” Alexander stated. “We are fortunate to have two teams come in and play, along with Columbus State. It will make for an extremely good classic. There will be four great games that the community will enjoy watching.” The Pacers play at Paine (Nov. 25) and Carson-Newman (Nov. 29) before embarking on a six-game homestand that spans 33 days. On Dec. 3, the team entertains Benedict. Ten days later, Conference Carolinas foe King travels to Aiken for the Pacers’ final non-conference game of the regular season. USC Aiken opens PBC play with home dates against Georgia College (Dec. 17), Columbus State (Dec. 20), Armstrong State (Jan. 3) and Flagler (Jan. 5). The Pacers hit the road for games at UNC Pembroke (Jan. 7) and Flagler (Jan. 10). Nearby rival Lander (Jan. 14) and NCAA Tournament foe Georgia Southwestern (Jan. 20) are at the Convocation Center prior to the Pacers traveling to NCAA Sweet 16 competitor Montevallo (Jan. 19). After the Homecoming game against Francis Marion (Jan. 24), USC Aiken plays at Armstrong State (Jan. 28) and Young Harris (Jan. 31). Including the games against the Pirates and Mountain Lions, Alexander’s team plays six of its final nine contests on the road. The Pacers host UNC Pembroke (Feb. 4) before traveling to Lander (Feb. 7) and Clayton State (Feb. 11). USC Aiken hosts GRU Augusta (Feb. 14) and North Georgia (Feb. 18) before wrapping up the regular season with games at Francis Marion (Feb. 21) and GRU Augusta (Feb. 25). “The Peach Belt Conference is always tough,” Alexander mentioned. “It is arguably the best league in Division II from top to bottom. There are no days off when you hit league play. This year, we will have our work cut out for us, but we are up for the challenge.” The postseason begins Saturday, Feb. 28 with the first round of the PBC Tournament.
“We have a really competitive non-conference schedule,” Alexander said. “We are fortunate to have all regional games this year. We open the season against teams that are typically NCAA Tournament competitors, so it gives us a great sense of where we are immediately.” USC Aiken opens the season at the Barton 45-Second Classic 11

Coach of the Year, Alexander guided USC Aiken to a final 14
ranking of sixth. The Pacers advanced to the championship game of the PBC Tourney and earned the top seed in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional before falling to Clayton State 60-58. Alexander guided the Pacers to a combined 15 wins in his first two years with the program. The Pacers were 15-44 in his first two years overall. Since then, Alexander has turned the Pacers into a Division II powerhouse. While Alexander and his team went through a tough season in 200607 marred by injuries and roster shakeups, the coach did reach a milestone when the Pacers beat Allen 92-60 on Dec. 2, 2006, for his 100th career victory. Alexander joined the USC Aiken community in June of 2005 after serving as head coach for the previous six seasons at Mansfield University, a NCAA Division II institution in Mansfield, Pa. He became the school’s seventh person to sit at the helm and third since moving to the NCAA Division II ranks in 1990-91. Alexander was hired after standing out in the hiring process to the USC Aiken administration. “We interviewed an exceptional pool of candidates for this position; however, Vince stood out from the group as a stellar coach,” said then USC Aiken Chancellor Dr. Tom Hallman at a reception to welcome Alexander to campus. “I spoke to several people, including [Mansfield’s] president, who had nothing but respect for Vince personally and professionally.” In his time at Mansfield, Alexander led the Mountaineers to an 89-74 record, the 2005 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Championship, and four appearances in the PSAC Tournament. Over his last three seasons, Mansfield was 57-29. The PSAC does not crown a regularseason champion, but Alexander’s 2004-05 squad finished with the best conference record in the 14-team league. The Mountaineers went 10-2 on their way to the Eastern Division Championship. The team finished the season with an overall record of 18-11. All those accomplishments are even more impressive considering Mansfield was picked to finish fourth in the Eastern Division. Alexander took over the reins of the Mansfield program in 1999 after serving two seasons as an assistant coach at the university. His first team finished 13-13 and his second squad (2000-01) appeared in the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 1997. Only eight of the 14 PSAC teams, four from each
division, advance to the tournament. After posting a 9-16 mark in 2001-02, the Mountaineers rolled off a pair of 18-win campaigns and a 20-win season. In 2002-03, Mansfield went 18-11 and returned to the PSAC Tournament, making the first of three consecutive trips to the league championship tourney. Alexander led the Mountaineers to a 21-7 record in 2003-04 and a second place finish in the PSAC Eastern Division. The team was ranked nationally during the season and with a final NCAA East Region ranking of number six, just missed earning a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament. 15

and fewest turnovers for a season (275). In addition to the records that were set, Larsen’s 326 rebounds are the third most in PBC history and his 8.9 rebounds a game for his career put him sixth all time in the conference. Wright’s 194 assists are the 13th most ever by a PBC student-athlete. Zimmerman, Alderman, Seilern and Wright all scored over 1,000 points in their careers while Larsen was just shy of the prestigious mark. However, it was not just the five that guided the Pacers to the top of the region – and to a top-five program nationally. Each student-athlete on Alexander’s squad stepped up throughout the season. Alderman netted double figures eight times on the year and snagged a double-double in the win at Armstrong. A force on the inside, Alderman came on strong during the second half of the season and saw at least 10 minutes of playing time a night
double figures in the scoring column six times, including a season-best 12 in the Final Four against West Liberty. Porchea’s length provided several match-up problems for the opposition. He was capable of playing inside and outside and was aggressive on both ends of the court. Derrick Scott saw time in 30 games, earning the start once. He hit for a season-high eight markers against GRU Augusta and in the win over Flagler. Scott had the ability to play inside or outside and was rangy. His ability to shoot the three allowed him to be perfect from behind the arc in three games while shooting at least 50 percent from downtown in two others. Individually, the squad had an abundance of talent from top to bottom and will be remembered not only for their accomplishments on the court, but off it as well.
