This is USC Aiken 

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.

An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College 4

Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview  Despite having one of the youngest teams in Division II last season, head coach Mike Brandt’s squad found a way to earn a postseason berth in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Although the team had some growing pains early on, USC Aiken was in virtually every game last season and pushed several NCAA Tournament teams to the brink. This season, the Pacers have an additional year of experience under their belts and brought in an influx of outstanding talent to an already strong cast of student-athletes. The team is still young with just two seniors, but the experience gained last year was extremely valuable. “We return a lot of our players and we are playing on a higher level now than where we finished last year,” Brandt said. “Our team chemistry is great, which is always important. We have a very talented and deep team this year.”

Senior Mackenzie Reese was looked upon to be a leader on the team last year as a junior and will have the same role this season. She has played in 85 games during her three seasons and has a chance to net her 1,000th career point this season if she has just the same productivity as a season ago.

Newcomer Emry Tsitouris is the lone freshman on the team. A two-time all-state selection from Parkwood H.S. (N.C.), Tsitouris has the ability to play inside and outside. As a senior, she averaged 24 points and 15 rebounds a game. Tsitouris finished her career with 1,792 points to go along with 1,361 rebounds.

Brand has a pair of newcomers at the point guard spot in juniors Stephanie Bell and Katelyn Grisillo. The two are tremendous players whose styles differ. Bell, a transfer from Sante Fe Community College, is a scoring point guard that can make defenses pay when dropping off or double teaming. Grisillo is a transfer from Presbyterian College. She is a passfirst point guard that eagerly gets her teammates involved but can still hit a shot if left open.

“Katelyn brings a fire to the team,” Brandt added. “Pound for pound she is as tough as anyone we have. Katelyn is feisty and is a team player. She will be a good leader for us.”

Redshirt-sophomore Amaura Brandt led the PBC in three-point field goals made and three-point field goal accuracy en route to netting 7.8 points a game. She canned 40.6 percent of her shots from downtown. Brandt registered seven double-digit scoring games, including a career-high 20 in the win over

“I think we once again set up a non-conference schedule that is tough,” Brandt said. “We are much more prepared for this type of schedule than we were a year ago. We play some high-quality teams that should give us a good measuring stick of where we are heading into PBC play.”

“Tiffany is a very hard working player,” Brandt stated. “She is solid defensively and can attack the basket.”

Sophomore Kate Duff progressed throughout the season. She played in all 29 games and started six times. She was third on the team in assists, but led the Pacers in steals.

“Carly is much improved from last year,” Brandt said. “She is playing with a lot more confidence. Her shot has improved and she can play multiple positions for us.”

Second-year player Alexis Ware saw the court in 19 games last year. Ware drained 40 percent of her attempts from the field. “The confidence that Alexis is playing with right now is great,” Brandt stated. “She is much stronger both physically and mentally this year. With her improved play, Alexis will contribute this year.”

“Mackenzie worked hard since last season,” Brandt said. “She should have a great senior season. Her intensity is high and she should be one of the best players in the conference.”

Sophomore Carly Gilreath played in all 29 games last season, averaging over 11 minutes a game. She tallied an assist per game and was asked to handle point guard duties while also playing shooting guard during some games.

Junior Tiffany Addison saw valuable playing time after transferring to USC Aiken last season. She drained 40.7 percent of her field goals and connected on 78 percent of her free throws.

“Stephanie has a chance to be one of the premier point guards in the PBC,” Brandt said. “She defends extremely well and can handle the ball. Stephanie is a good passer and can shoot the ball well too, which puts her in another classification as a point guard.

“Kate has improved immensely from last year” Brandt stated. “She has adjusted well to the American game. She is stronger, faster and quicker than when she was a freshman. Kate is also playing with a lot more confidence.”

Junior Mariah Durian was a welcomed addition to a young line-up last season. She accounted for 10.6 points per game. She netted double figures 15 times as a sophomore, including twice where she netted over 20 points. Durian has an outside chance of netting her 1,000th career point this season.

“Being the only freshman, Emry will be able to take bigger steps to improve faster than when there are several freshmen,” Brandt said. “She plays extremely hard. Emry can shoot outside, post up and drive. She has a chance to be one of the top freshmen in the conference.”

Center

Emily O’Rourke has battled injuries throughout much of her career, but when healthy can be a force in the post. Her 6-2 frame makes opponents think twice before entering the lane and her ability to alter shots is measured in a lower field goal percentage when she’s in the game. “Emily is coming off an ankle surgery from the summer,” Brandt stated. “It will take her a little bit of time to heal. When she’s ready to go, she’ll have a solid senior year. We need her to be an inside presence for us.”

USC Aiken opens its campaign at the South Atlantic Conference/Peach Belt Challenge. The Pacers open against the host Eagles of Carson-Newman on Nov. 15. The following day, USC Aiken takes on Lincoln Memorial before opening its home portion of the slate. On Nov. 19, Anderson heads to the Convocation Center as the two battled in the season-opening game a year ago. On Nov. 22, Brandt’s team hosts Barton before hitting the road. The Pacers travel to Pensacola, Fla., for the West Florida Thanksgiving Classic. The team squares off against Central Missouri on Nov. 28 and will face another opponent the following afternoon. USC Aiken stays on the road for a Dec. 1 game at Erskine before hosting its longest homestand since moving to Division II. Brandt’s team plays six consecutive home contests, spanning 30 calendar days. The Pacers host Livingstone (Dec. 6) and Limestone (Dec. 13) before entering league play on Dec. 17 against Georgia College. Prior to taking a few days off, the team hosts Columbus State (Dec. 20). USC Aiken opens the 2015 year by hosting the Pirates of Armstrong State (Jan. 3) and the Saints of Flagler (Jan. 5). The Pacers hit the road for a pair of PBC games the following week. The squad travels to UNC Pembroke (Jan. 7) before heading to St. Augustine Jan. 10, to take on Flagler for the second time in less than a week.

Sophomore Jasmine Coach will see time at the small forward position. As a rookie, she played in 25 games and buried 41.7 percent of her shots from the floor.

“Kassy is playing with more aggression now than since her arrival,” stated Brandt. “She runs the floor extremely well and is a very strong player. If Kassy will continue to play with more aggressiveness, she can be very solid for us.”

Brandt’s team plays six of its final nine games away from the Convocation Center. The squad travels to Armstrong State (Jan. 28) and Young Harris (Jan. 31) to round out January. The Pacers host UNC Pembroke Feb. 4, but plays at Lander (Feb. 7) and Clayton State (Feb. 11) for the next two contests. USC Aiken hosts rival GRU Augusta on Feb. 14. The game has been slated as the team’s “Pink Zone” contest. Four days later, the Pacers host North Georgia in the home finale. USC Aiken wraps up regularseason play with games at Francis Marion (Feb. 21) and GRU Augusta (Feb. 25).

“Mariah worked hard over the summer,” Brandt said. “She has improved on all facets of her game. She is very skilled at driving to the basket, shooting the three and posting up. If Mariah plays smart and uses those assets, she will be an extremely tough player to guard.”

Junior Kassy Johannsen started coming into her own last year. Due to injuries and depth, she doubled her minutes per game from her freshman season. For every 10 minutes of court time, Johannsen averaged just under a block. With her 6-1 frame and uncanny ability to block shots from the weak side, Johannsen’s role from a season ago should increase even more this year.

On Feb. 17, the Pacers managed to pick up a 10-point victory over Flagler. The Pacers jumped out to a 30-16 halftime advantage and was never seriously threatened in the final 20 minutes of action.
