THIS IS USC AIKEN The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.
When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW
Coming off a season that saw the University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis team post a No. 24 national ranking at the conclusion of the season, head coach Steve Dahm’s team has high expectations for the 2014 campaign.
“Heading into the season, we are No. 21 nationally,” Dahm stated. “We are trying to make improvements each and every day. If everyone on the team does that and plays to the ability they are capable of, it could be a very good year.” Returning to the line-up are several key cogs from last year, including Ettore Damiani, Lucas Gobbi, Andy Quirk, Ronan Reberac, and Patrick Stiebinger. The Pacers brought in a trio of newcomers, including Barry transfer sophomore Alejandro Andino. USC Aiken also inked a pair of rookies to the 2014 squad as Jaime Gusano and Felix Zahn will make their collegiate debuts this season. Damiani, a junior, played mostly at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles spots a year ago. After being the team MVP in 2013, he had an excellent fall campaign and will once again see the opposition’s top player. Quirk, a junior, and Andino will likely battle for the No. 2 position. Both are highly talented and whichever studentathlete does not play No. 2 in singles will be at the No. 3 spot. Gobbi, a senior, brings a wealth of experience to the table and will be in the line-up. Fellow senior Stiebinger could have played every position during his career and will likely be playing the No. 4 or No. 5 position. Battling for the No. 6 spot will be between Gusano and Zahn. In doubles competition, Reberac will see plenty of action as he is a very good doubles player. Stiebinger saw an abundance of time in doubles play a season ago as he could be the best doubles player on the squad.
Dahm’s team will not have much time to rest before traveling to Armstrong in the PBC opener Feb. 5. The squad steps back out of league play Feb. 7 at Belmont Abbey before playing Georgia Gwinett Feb. 8 for Homecoming. The Pacers return to the road for three of the next four matches (Feb. 11 at Newberry, Feb. 19 at Anderson and Feb. 26 at Erskine). The lone home date during that stretch is a match against state rival Coker on Feb. 15. However, USC Aiken has a great home schedule during the month of March as eight of the nine matches are in front of its home fans. Pacer Nation will get to see the team face Pfeiffer (March 1), Mount Olive (March 4), Francis Marion (March 6), Georgia Southwestern (March 8), Columbus State (March 9), GRU Augusta (March 25), Limestone (March 27) and Lander (March 29). The lone road contest for Dahm’s squad is a March 22 date against Flagler in Savannah, Ga. The team concludes its regular season with three of its final five contests away from the USC Aiken Tennis Complex. On Apr. 1, the Pacers travel to Queens. The squad hosts North Greenville (Apr. 2) and Young Harris (Apr. 5) before concluding the regular season with matches at North Georgia (Apr. 6) and Georgia College (Apr. 12). “Our non-conference schedule is very tough,” Dahm said. “Teams in our region have improved greatly over the past few seasons. For us to compete at a high level regionally and nationally, we have to be prepared for each and every team on our schedule.” Should the Pacers succeed in being prepared every time they step on the court, Dahm’s team could make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
According to Dahm, the doubles line-up could feature multiple pairings as the season progresses. “We will go with our best three teams,” Dahm said. “We will try not to move everyone around a lot, but once we figure out our best three doubles teams, we should be very good.” USC Aiken, which opens its season Feb. 1, has an extremely tough non-conference slate before opening Peach Belt Conference competition. The Pacers begin their quest for the NCAA Tournament at ABAC, which is one of the top junior colleges in the country. The following day, the team heads to Valdosta State for another outstanding match.

USC Aiken, who received a bye into the semifinal round of the Savannah regional of the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Tournament, defeated No. 18 Francis Marion to advance to the regional final against No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic. The Pirates were able to claim the regional title, but the Pacers still concluded the year 19-5 overall. AASU went on to win its second straight national crown a couple weeks later. The Pacers as a team won 13 of their final 15 matches in 2009.
Head Coach 13th Year
Three USC Aiken men’s tennis players were chosen to the 2009 NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s All-America team at the conclusion of the 2009 spring campaign. Bruno Seves was tabbed to the team as a singles player, while Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne were selected to the team as a doubles tandem. Seves had become the program’s first ever All-America selection one year earlier in 2008. In 2010, USC Aiken once again had two players chosen to the ITA All-America team as Gregory Andrade and Juan Xavier Ponce were named All-Americans by virtue of ending the year ranked ninth nationally. A native of Kenmore, N.Y., Dahm came to USC Aiken from Division I Furman University where he served as the assistant men’s coach for two seasons. Dahm has a strong foundation of coaching experience. He has spent time at the Van der Meer Tennis Center, the University of Rochester and the Country Club of Buffalo, where he was the head tennis professional for five summers. In collegiate play, Dahm was the number one singles and doubles player at the University of Buffalo. He was selected to the Mid-American All-Conference team as well as the First-Team All-Star squad. While attending UB, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

2013 REVIEW
The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis team guided by 12th-year head coach Steve Dahm completed its 2013 season with a record of 11-9. The Pacers began the season ranked 23rd, and they finished the year ranked 24th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Pacers finished the year with a 4-6 record in Peach Belt Conference play, which put them seventh in the PBC standings. The Pacers were ranked as high as sixth in the Region rankings and were seventh after the PBC Tournament. USC Aiken opened the season with a 5-4 victory over nationally 13th-ranked Valdosta State. The Pacers started out the first two months of the season going 7-4 in February and March. The only losses during this span were to national No. 1 Armstrong, No. 7 Columbus State, No. 27 Francis Marion and No. 9 Augusta State. On the year, the Pacers defeated five nationally-ranked teams. Along with the season opening victory, the Pacers also beat 26th-ranked Young Harris, 31st-ranked Flagler, 32nd-ranked North Georgia and 42nd-ranked Wingate. The Pacers fell to nationally-ranked Lander and Francis Marion in the PBC Tournament, but still earned an atlarge bid for the NCAA Tournament. The berth marked USC Aiken’s 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history. USC Aiken was the seventh-seed in the Southeast Region and faced off against the second-seeded and
region host Columbus State. The Pacers fell, 5-1, to the region host Columbus State to end the season. Patrick Stiebinger was named the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Elite 15 award winner. The award is modeled on the NCAA’s Elite 89 and honors the student-athletes competing in the championship event with the highest cumulative GPA. Stiebinger owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a junior. Stiebinger was also chosen to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team and the Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Men’s At-Large District Three First-Team. Bruno Orlandini was a Peach Belt Conference Men’s Tennis Honorable Mention All-Academic selection. Three Pacers finished the season with double-digit win totals in singles competition, led by Ettore Damiani with a 16-4 record. Damiani won 15 straight matches while claiming Co-Student-Athlete of the Month honors for March from the USC Aiken Athletics Department. The 16 wins on the year for Damiani place him in the top-10 in school history for single-season singles victories. Lucas Gobbi and Andy Quirk both finished with 10 singles victories on the year. The duo of Quirk and Orlandini also claimed 10 doubles victories, going 7-3 against PBC competition. Newcomer Kevin Zerath claimed 12 doubles wins by partnering with Stiebinger and Ronan Reberac. Damiani and Quirk were honored with Co-Most Valuable Player awards for their play during the 2013 campaign.

Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06.

The PBC is in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the Final Four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the National Championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the National Championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 14 sports, six for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and women’s track and field.
