THIS IS USC AIKEN The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.

When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

PEACH BELT CONFERENCE Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06.

The PBC is in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the Final Four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the National Championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the National Championships. In all, 59 Peach Belt teams made appearances in the NCAA postseason, including seven men’s tennis teams and six each in the sports of men’s golf and women’s tennis. The seven charter members of the conference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006. In 2009-10, the Peach Belt added Montevallo and Flagler. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins. Dr. Fred Carter, president of Francis Marion University, begins his two-year term as president of the Peach Belt this year. The conference currently holds championships in 14 sports, six for men and eight for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf and women’s track and field.

TEAM PREVIEW The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team has been a solid program throughout head coach Jerry Snyder’s long tenure. However, this season expectations are at an all-time high due to the abundance of experience returning, the amazing new talent that has been recruited and arguably the top one-two pitching combination in the region. “We have a great group of seniors who have displayed their leadership abilities on and off the field, which will parlay into the success we will have this season,” Snyder said. “Our pitching has been there in the past, but this year we are going to attack on offense. “Assistant coach Erin Ward has done a lot with the offense during the off-season,” Snyder said. “We are hoping to see the team batting average up 40 to 50 points and have an increased production in home runs. “Some of the returners are buying into the offense now and that will be one of the deciding factors for us this season,” Snyder said. “We’ve always been strong defensively, but now we have the offensive pieces in place to make a strong run.”

Catcher

Snyder has four student-athletes that could potentially see time behind the plate this season. Seniors Alyssa Cook and Hillary Stewart are both seniors while sophomore Andrea Daring and newcomer Mackenzie Barbor could have big impacts. Stewart is a four-year starter and has worked well with senior hurler India Kornegay. During her time, Stewart has been a good defensive catcher (.986 fielding percentage) that put together four multi-hit games a season ago. “Hillary has been a solid athlete for us,” Snyder said. “She knows the staff well and has great quickness defensively.” Cook was in the line-up as a starter 26 times in 2013, seeing action in 34 games. She posted a .300 slugging percentage and recorded a grand slam against No. 13 North Georgia in the PBC Quarterfinals a season ago. “Alyssa has the best arm of the group,” Snyder said. “She also displays a strong leadership ability.” Daring played in 21 games as a rookie, holding a .386 on-base percentage. “Andrea has a strong arm and is getting better defensively,” Snyder stated. “She could have a big offensive season.” Barbor could also see time behind the plate. She guided her team to four region championships. “Mackenzie has been away from the game for two years,” Snyder said. “She is a really good player offensively and defensively.”

First Base

Newcomer Magan Thrower could be penciled in for the starter on opening day. A two-time all-region honoree, she picked up Offensive Player of the Year accolades twice at Stratford H.S. “Magan came from a really good program,” Snyder stated. “She has a big bat and is good defensively.” Daring could also see time at first base according to Snyder, but it comes down to who is hitting better.

Second Base

Rookie Madison Labrador attended Lexington H.S. and is a good pick-up for the Pacers. “She is athletic and one of the hardest workers I’ve ever had,” Snyder said. Versatile senior Kaitlyn White could also see playing time at second base as well.

Shortstop

Junior transfer Ashley Metts guided Aiken Tech to a Region X Tournament Championship and was tabbed the 2013 NJCAA Region X Player of the Year before becoming a Pacer. “Ashley has a strong bat and a solid arm,” Snyder stated. “She is

very quick and can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.”

Third Base

Sophomore Samantha Chubb transferred from Aiken Tech. The all-region honoree also garnered all-tournament team accolades at her previous school. “Samantha is a big hitter who shows no fear at third base,” Snyder said. “She falls into line as another good third baseman for this program.”

Outfield

Senior Brittney Williamson has patrolled left field for the last three seasons and has been stellar defensively. “Brittney has always been good defensively,” Snyder stated. “She has a good arm, knows how to play our left field and we hope her bat comes around like it did the first two seasons.” Sophomore Sarah Montei is coming off a solid rookie campaign and will see time in center field. “Although she had a good year, we are looking for Sarah to continue stepping up her game this season,” Snyder said. Victoria Burkett, a junior, played shortstop last year but could see time at multiple positions in 2014, including center field. “Victoria is versatile and will be filling in at multiple positions,” Snyder stated. “She has good speed and a solid arm.” Junior Shannon Traylor is coming off an injury-plagued 2013 season, but looks to rebound for a spot in right field. “She could be the fastest kid on our team,” Snyder mentioned. “Taylor has a good arm that could make an impact as long as she remains healthy.” White could see time in right field as well. “Kaitlyn will play somewhere,” Snyder said. “She puts up the huge offensive numbers. Kaitlyn will make it in the line-up. She is a good senior leader and is a great team player.” Newcomer Brielle Jungblut could also see time in the outfield. “Brielle is extremely fast,” Snyder said. “She will be used a lot as a base runner.”

Pitching

Kornegay, should she remain healthy, could finish re-writing the entire USC Aiken record book in 2014. She has been dominant her first three seasons and will continue to keep the Pacers in every game she works. “India has worked harder this preseason than any of her other years,” Snyder stated. “She understand that this is her last season and wants to get the most out of it.” Taylor Morgan, a sophomore, experienced a lot as a freshman. She registered 11 wins and saw action in 28 games. “Due to a shortage on the staff last year, Taylor saw more action than most freshmen would,” Snyder said. “We hope that experience from last year pays off in 2014.” Newcomer Brittany Hoskins was a three-time all-state selection and a two-time Region Player of the Year at Crescent H.S. “Brittany had a good fall and could be a big contributor for us,” Snyder stated. “If she gets the experience in, she would be our No. 2 hurler in 2015.”

Schedule

The Pacers play a daunting schedule this season in order to prepare the squad for postseason competition. “Our conference is always tough,” Snyder said. “In nonconference action, we go after teams that made it to regionals the previous year. This season, we also play in a couple of big tournaments. By doing this, it gives us some experience for the postseason.” Should USC Aiken get the offensive production it desires, the pitching staff will help guide the program deep into postseason competition.

Jerry Snyder Currently the coach with the longest tenure in the Peach Belt Conference and the only coach in the league to have coached since the PBC’s inception, USC Aiken head Softball coach Jerry Snyder finished his 26th season at the helm of the Pacer program in 2013. After the 2013 season, Snyder now owns a career record of 629-607-1. The Pacers went 25-21-1 in 2013, advancing to the semifinals of the PBC Tournament by defeating No. 13 North Georgia. His 25th year in 2012 would bring a milestone 600th career which was earned when the Pacers defeated Pfeiffer 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on April 6, 2012. USC Aiken concluded the 2011 softball season by making its second appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The Pacers finished the 2011 season with a record of 2618. The Pacers ended play in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference with a record of 9-11. USC Aiken opened the 2010 season ranked in the top 15 in the nation. USC Aiken advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year before ending the year with an overall record of 23-23. The 2009 season was Snyder’s best. USC Aiken concluded the 2009 campaign a program-best 12th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll of 2009.

Head Coach 27th Season

The first Pacer squad to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament, USC Aiken ended the 2009 campaign with a 34-16 record. The Pacers’ 2009 mark garnered the 2009 USC Aiken softball team the best winning percentage (.680) in program history. USC Aiken’s 34 victories in 2009 tied them for second in program history for the most wins in a single season. The 2009 Pacers also tied the school record for the fewest runs allowed (139), equaling the 2006 team for the fewest runs given up as a team in a single season in school history. The 2009 campaign was an incredibly special year for the Pacers with Snyder earning his 500th career win earlier in the year. The win was just a sign of things to come for the Pacers as they continued to embark on one of the greatest seasons in school history. After splitting with UNC Pembroke on Feb. 15 to claim that special 500th victory, USC Aiken went on to earn its first ever national ranking en route to its first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The second game win over UNCP led to a season-high eight-game winning streak and the stretch helped USC Aiken to claim a victory in 12 of its next 13 games to stand at 18-7 after a 4-0 win over Tusculum on March 8.

2014 USC Aiken Softball

11

The Pacers would go 13-5 the rest of the regular season to earn the second spot in the Southeast region by the start of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence, S.C. The Pacers ended the year ranked in the final five NFCA polls, entering the poll for the first time in school history at No. 24 on April 8. The sixth Snyder team to claim 30 or more victories in a single season, the 2009 Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the top-20 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position at USC Aiken in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s

in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995. Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the record of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program. “The biggest highlight since I have been here is that my players have graduated and have gone on with their lives to become successful people,” Snyder said. “You should measure your success with what your student-athletes do in the classroom, instead of what they do on the field.” The program has posted 20-win seasons in 18 of the past 19 seasons. During his time as head coach, the Pacer program has had 18 All-Conference players, a Peach Belt Player of the Year, three Peach Belt Freshmen of the Year, eight AllRegion players and an All-American. The program has also had four players honored as CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. Snyder and his wife Kelly have two sons, Tony and James. The Snyder family resides in Aiken, S.C.

2013 REVIEW Under the guidance of head coach Jerry Snyder in his 26th season, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team finished the 2013 season with a 25-21-1 record. The 25 victories marks the 19th time in the past 20 seasons the Pacers have claimed 20 or more wins. The Pacers started out the season 12-4-1 prior to opening Peach Belt Conference play. India Kornegay set the new program record for strikeouts in a single game with 18 in the season-opener against Catawba on Feb. 9. The 18 strikeouts were good for the fifth highest single-game total in PBC history. This stretch also included two no-hitters, one by Kornegay against North Greenville on Feb. 27, and the other by Taylor Morgan against Ohio Dominican on March 3. Kornegay was selected as Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 26, and Morgan was honored as the PBC Freshman of the Week on March 5. The Pacers swept 14th-ranked Flagler at home on March 9, setting a precedent for success against nationally-ranked teams at J.H. Satcher Field. The Pacers split with fourthranked Armstrong on March 26, and 19th-ranked Columbus State on April 7. USC Aiken finished the season 4-2 against nationally-ranked teams at home. USC Aiken swept Lander at home on Senior Day to finish the regular season 11-11 against PBC foes, securing the sixth-seed in the PBC Tournament. The Pacers went 14-8 at J.H. Satcher Field on the season.

The Pacers advanced to the PBC Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season by knocking off 13thranked North Georgia, 5-2, in the quarterfinals. Nationally 14th-ranked Georgia College narrowly defeated USC Aiken, 4-3, in the semifinals to end the season. Three Pacers were honored as Peach Belt Conference All-Conference selections. Kaitlyn White was named to the First-Team, and Kornegay and Lindsey Jones were selected to the Second-Team. White and Kornegay were also All-Region selections. Alyssa Cook and Brittney Williamson earned Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament plaudits. Brandy Bossle and Victoria Burkett were honored as Capital One Academic NCAA Division II Softball District Three First-Team selections. Bossle and Burkett were also chosen to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team. Jones finished her career starting every game for four years for the Pacer softball program, and she is in the program top-10 in games played, games started, base hits, doubles, sacrifice hits and assists. White is currently in the top-10 for career batting average in the program’s record book. Kornegay finished the season with a single-season program-record 273 strikeouts. Kornegay now has 752 strikeouts in her career, best in USC Aiken history and sixth-best all-time in the PBC record book. Kornegay owns a number of other Pacer pitching records, and is in the top10 in program history in many other categories.
