This is USC Aiken ď„–
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur
An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.
rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.
When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College
Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer team set the bar high for 2014. Head coach Ike Ofoje and his team wants to step up from last year’s results and make a run to the Peach Belt Conference Championship match for the second time in three seasons. Coming off a 4-11-2 record, it may look as though the Pacers have a long way to go. However, those that were at the matches know otherwise. USC Aiken lost six one-goal contests in 2013, including one in overtime. The squad had the No. 1 team nationally, Young Harris, on the ropes with the score tied at 2-2 with less than 20 minutes remaining before falling by a 3-2 count. Not only could the Pacers have easily been 10-5-2, but the team played exceptionally well with a slew of newcomers and one of the youngest teams in Division II with just three seniors. Due to injuries, USC Aiken was limited to just one keeper for much of the season and was always just one play away from having to put a field player between the pipes. But, Joshua Poissant played valiantly and Brandon Jarosz did so as well upon returning as both picked up PBC Goalkeeper of the Week accolades during the season. Student-athletes that accounted for five goals in 2013 have all graduated, but with a solid core that saw plenty of playing time a season ago, Ofoje’s team looks to make a push not only for the PBC Tournament, but as a contender. “Last year we did not have much depth,” Ofoje said. “This season, we have a lot of players returning and a very talented group of incoming student-athletes. It means that when we substitute, there will not be a drop-off in terms of style of play and ability of play by our team. “We play a very tough schedule,” Ofoje stated. “If a team wants to compete in the Peach Belt Conference, it has to schedule tough non-conference opponents and that’s what we are doing in our program. I love playing tough
teams. It makes for a good experience for our players and helps up prepare for the conference, which is on a different level than other conferences in Division II.” The Pacers take on Division I foe USC Upstate, renewing an age-old rivalry that stemmed through the mid-2000’s when USC Upstate was in the Peach Belt and known as USC Spartanburg. Although it is just a scrimmage, the match will help Ofoje and his staff learn a lot about his team while also giving him the ability to play several newcomers. “We have a fun bunch of guys on the team this year,” Ofoje said. “It makes the job easier for me because we won’t have to teach the basics. We have experienced players and not just from the returners. If everyone comes back fit and we can stay healthy, it will be a good season for us.”
Goalkeepers USC Aiken has four keepers on paper currently, including two with experience on this team. “It will be a real battle for playing time,” Ofoje said. “We have three very capable net-minders with collegiate experience in Joshua Poissant, Brandon Jarosz and Miles Maynard.” Poissant and Jarosz played all but 2:57 in goal for the Pacers in 2013. The duo combined for a .701 save percentage and tallied 68 saves on the season.
Defenders One of the most prominent and experienced positions on the team is on defense. Led by third-year standout Dean Smith, and second-year player Manuel Medina, the back line for USC Aiken should be extremely strong. Smith started all 17 games while Manuel played in 17 contests, starting 16. The pair has played together and understands what each other will do in certain situations.
In addition to the pair, Rodrigo Goncalves saw time in 17 matches, earning the starting nod five times. Goncalves’ solid play led directly to a pair of goals last season. Edmund Eastick saw time last year and with his improved play during the spring season, Eastick will push for even more playing time as a senior. “We have a very talented core returning on defense,” Ofoje said. “The experience the players gained last year was very meaningful and will pay dividends this year. “We also have some very talented individuals coming in. The commitments stem from players that play center back, which has been our problem in the past. With their help, our defense should be better this year.”
Midfield The Pacers have a good group returning in the midfield for 2014. The position is led by seniors Noel Mais and Juergen Williams along with sophomore Nader Fakih. Mais was tied for second on the team with six points, coming on two goals and a pair of assists. Williams, despite not being credited with a goal or assist, led the squad to several key scoring chances and goals were scored due to his solid play in the midfield. Fakih played in 16 matches, netting one goal but also giving the team a huge boost off the bench. “Noel is our most experienced player coming back,” Ofoje said. “We expect a whole lot this year from him and hope he will deliver. Should the newcomers influence his game, Noel could have an outstanding season.” Two rookies in Jordan Misiri and Andre Simmond could have a valuable impact on the success of this year’s team. “Jordan and Andre are two outstanding players,” Ofoje stated. “They are skillful, quick and have lots of confidence. We will not push them into action before they are ready, but they can play with anyone and several Division I schools were after them.”
In all, Ofoje has a good problem in the midfield with so many talented individuals. USC Aiken’s group at this position could turn the team into a title contender.
Forward The Pacers have to replace one of the most dynamic student-athletes in the Peach Belt Conference due to graduation as Jason King led the squad in goals, assists and points in 2013. Even though the position will include several newcomers, USC Aiken has some talented individuals returning to the line-up. Sajih Daychoum tallied one of the game-winning goals in 2013. He finished the year tied for second on the squad with six points as he tied for team-high honors with three goals on just six shots. Jarrel Smalls and Austin Ahimbisibwe saw plenty of action a season ago. Smalls started all 17 contests, netting three goals, while Ahimbisibwe notched 13 starts and played 15 games. “In addition to the returners, we will rely heavily on transfer Adria Dalmau,” Ofoje said. “He is a true goal scorer. Adria may need a match or two in order to adjust to the speed of play, but once he does that he will be fine. “Overall, everyone that played last season understands this year it does not matter who we play,” Ofoje said. “We dominated a lot of teams last year but ran out of gas due to our depth. The team understands how close they were in 2013 and have made the necessary changes to get back to the conference tournament.” A good season for the Pacers would mean a return trip to the PBC Championship. Should the ball bounce in the right direction this season, Ofoje will lead the young, but talented squad to another successful season.

The Archives 2013-14 Season Review With 18 newcomers to the roster at the start of the 2013 season, University of South Carolina Aiken men’s soccer coach knew his team would be talented, but was unsure if the team would be able to repeat its run to the Peach Belt Conference Championship match from the 2012 campaign. The team not only had an abundance of newcomers, it was also one of the youngest teams in the league with just three seniors on the roster. Head coach Ike Ofoje’s squad opened its season with a home match against Pfeiffer. Starting several underclassmen and an abundance of newcomers, the Pacers managed to play to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. The stingy defense allowed just three shots on frame, which Joshua Poissant easily stuffed in earning the shutout. After three tough losses, the squad picked up its first win by earning its second shutout of the year in front of the home crowd. On Sept. 17, the Pacers picked up a 1-0 victory over Brevard in a non-conference contest. In the 36th minute of play, Jason King dribbled down the middle of the pitch, turned left and fired a shot past the keeper for the only goal of the match. Poissant’s six stops provided USC Aiken with the shutout.
match after a scramble in the box. Just 80 seconds later, Noel Mais found Nader Fakih for the second goal of the contest. Jarrel Smalls added a score in the 77th minute before Gabriel Locher notched two goals in 1:45 to round out the scoring. Poissant and Jesse Rooker combined for the shutout as Poissant stopped the lone shot on goal the Knights had. On Sept. 25, the Pacers squared off with Young Harris, which was ranked No. 19 at the time – and the team would eventually climb to No. 1 during the regular season. USC Aiken fell behind 2-0 in the first frame, but the team would not give up. The Pacers continued applying pressure and finally broke through in the 55th minute. Jason King took a free kick and found Daychoum, pulling the squad within one at 2-1. In the 70th minute, Locher found Mais off a long pass and he quickly converted it, evening the match at two. The visitors netted the game-winning goal four minutes later, but the match proved that Ofoje’s team could play with the best in the conference and Division II. USC Aiken took the momentum it gained by playing such a close match against a formidable opponent and used it in the road match at Mount Olive the following Saturday.
In the most impressive offensive display of the season, Ofoje’s team earned its second consecutive victory by notching a 5-0 victory over visiting St. Andrews.
For his outstanding effort on the week, Poissant was tabbed the Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.
The teams were scoreless until the 69th minute of play. Sajih Daychoum broke through with the first tally of the
The Pacers and Trojans were scoreless until late in the second frame. Armin Lange broke through and crossed
it to Austin Ahimbisibwe, who cleanly put a shot past the keeper for the game-winning goal. Poissant would pick up his third shutout of the season after earning two saves. Returning home and playing in front of a raucous crowd, USC Aiken earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Georgia Southwestern thanks in part to the goal by Lange off a pass from King. USC Aiken would not pick up another positive result until Senior Day. After honoring Andre McFarlane, Jason King and Carson Villa in a pre-match ceremony, Ofoje’s team garnered a 3-1 win over North Georgia. Smalls put the Pacers on top 1-0 on a first-half pass by Mais. He netted his second goal of the match early in the second period for what turned out to be the game-winner. The visitors cut the lead in half in the 64th minute, but
Villa took a pass from King and booted home an opennet goal for the final margin. Brandon Jarosz picked up Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honors for his effort in the match. Although young, the Pacers performed higher than many expected. Despite not getting a few more wins, USC Aiken had chances to pick up victories in virtually every match. With such a large group of student-athletes returning next year, the future looks bright for Ofoje and the men’s soccer program.
