The Peach Belt Conference The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing, through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field.
This is USC Aiken ď„–
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.
An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College
Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview Head coach Sue Vodicka and the USC Aiken women’s soccer team has a large, but attainable goal in 2014 – earn a spot in the postseason. The program narrowly missed out on earning a berth to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in 2013, but returns a core group of student-athletes that should catapult the squad into the upper half of the league. The Pacers have a rigorous schedule that includes a challenging non-conference slate and a Division I opponent. The league portion of the schedule is always tough as USC Aiken plays in one of the toughest conferences in Division II. Vodicka’s group opens the season by hosting Elite Eight participant Wingate. After another home match against SIAC foe Emmanuel, the Pacers travel to NCAA Tournament participant LenoirRhyne. In all, USC Aiken faces four squads that earned berths in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Vodicka’s team hosts nine matches in all, including six during September. The team faces just two nonconference opponents on the road: the Lady Bears and the Division I foe Mercer. Combined with a tough conference schedule, should the Pacers make the PBC postseason and finish in the upper half of the league, the team could very well make the NCAA Tournament.
Vodicka possesses two of the league’s top five goal scorers from 2013 in Hannah Allison and Megan Smits. Both accounted for 10 goals and five assists. Each was tied for eighth in the conference in assists and their 25 points apiece tied them for fifth in the PBC. The dyad earned postseason honors, with Allison earning all-conference honors while Smits picked up all-region accolades.
Forward Aside from Allison and Smits, Vodicka will be looking for more firepower from the position in 2014. She has a wealth of talented individuals who could help take pressure off the defense with their outstanding play. In addition to Allison and Smits, Vodicka will rely on senior Caroline Gillespie, who posted two goals and two assists a season ago. One of her goals was a gamewinner in overtime. With an excellent spring season behind her, Gillespie should leave her mark with a solid final season. Newcomer Kayla Muse, a versatile student-athlete who can play multiple positions, could very easily find herself playing up top in some matches.
“We have the most difficult schedule in my tenure,” Vodicka said. “I’m excited about the season and we have great opportunities against opponents from strong conferences. The early portion of our schedule prepares us for our conference and it doesn’t do any good to play weak teams.
Midfield
“Wingate is back on the schedule and facing LenoirRhyne will be good for us,” Vodicka stated. “We also play Emmanuel, which is going to be a good team, in addition to playing Division I foe Mercer. The Bears have a great tradition and it will be a great opportunity for our kids.”
With several of the midfielders being juniors, the squad has progressed into a solid core of the past two seasons. This year, the group could shine and be one of the strongest in the conference. In 2013, the returners combined for seven goals and seven assists.
Coming off one of its best seasons in the program’s history at 8-8-2, USC Aiken’s return of nine starters to the line-up, including a dynamic duo of potent scorers, could make 2014 a banner season for the Pacers.
The addition of newcomers at the position should also open things up even more for Vodicka. Brye Epley, Amanda Mazzie, Sarah Moore and Karin Cadawalader
One of the deepest positions on the team is at the midfield spot. The squad returns Olivia Stiltner, Jenna Beauregard, Heaven Tylee, Taylor Simmons, Deirdre Ball and Akeyla Furbert, with all seeing valuable time in the past for Vodicka.
are young, but bring a wealth of experience to the squad.
Defenders Lost due to graduation was a leader in Kyle Maguire. However, the team still returns a slew of talent and has solid incoming talent that will help fortify the position. Seniors Kim Beyer, Ella McDaniels and Haley Pipkin, along with juniors Hazel Kelley, Emily May, Tylee and Simmons, bolster a strong core that should help the youthful keepers. Every single one of the returners started or saw valuable time on the pitch over the last couple of seasons, which should help the Pacers move to the forefront of arguably the toughest league in Division II. With the additions of rookies Cassy Rish, Tori Caldwell, Muse and Mazzie, Vodicka will have several options in terms of line-ups during critical times throughout the season.
Goalkeepers Vodicka has to replace a pair of keepers in Alli Edens
and Melissa Westphal. The two patrolled the net for the last four seasons and combined for 58 starts in the 70 games – and one of the two had started every game the last three seasons. The Pacers have three rookie keepers on the roster in Nicole Cranny, Dakota Curtis and Cadawalader. Cranny has experience on the Irish National Team while Curtis picked up all-district and all-region accolades at Springport H.S. “If our defense plays like I know they can, our keepers will have time to adjust to the collegiate game,” Vodicka said. “There will be a learning curve but we want to be able to build and sustain attacks, allowing our keepers to grow into their roles.” “All in all, I’m very excited about our roster,” Vodicka stated. “There’s a lot to be excited about as we have several returners that will be key contributors while multiple newcomers bring a wealth of experience. Several of our athletes could play different positions and all bring a great deal to the team.”

The Archives 2013-14 Season Review After being selected 10th in the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Poll, head coach Sue Vodicka and her team turned in one of the most impressive seasons in the program’s brief history despite facing some of its toughest competition in recent years. The Pacers, despite having one of the youngest teams in the region, recorded an 8-8-2 mark for the campaign and had two of the top scorers in the conference in Megan Smits and second-team all-conference honoree Hannah Allison. The season featured the third-most wins for the program in its history and had the third-longest winning streak in the program’s history as well. Additionally, the squad earned a tie with top-25 and league-leading Clayton State and had a Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week. Overall, the squad was just one point short of making the conference tournament. Leading the way were a pair of high-octane scorers in Allison and Smits, who each posted 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Allison, who was one of the top players coming out of high school in the state, stepped onto the pitch for the first time in two years and was a scoring threat immediately. Despite being double teamed, she found ways to score and get her teammates involved. This led to Smits having a phenomenal year as six of her 10 goals were game-winning scores, which was the best in the conference. The Pacers also had outstanding contributions from senior Aubrey Danielson (eight points), Jenna
Beauregard (seven points) and Caroline Gillespie (six points). Beauregard and Gillespie each accounted for a game-winning goal as well. However, the team was not all about offense as the strong defense led by Kim Beyer, Kyle Maguire and Haley Pipkin gave Vodicka a formidable back line. The group helped keep shots away from Alli Edens and Melissa Westphal, who completed their outstanding careers with solid numbers in 2013. The duo between the pipes combined for four shutouts on the year, including two that started a four-match winning streak from Oct. 5-16. USC Aiken opened the season with a loss against nationally-ranked Rollins, but held a 1-0 lead thanks to Allison’s first goal of the campaign. The Pacers got in the win column with a 2-0 shutout against USC Beaufort two days later as Smits and Allison tallied scores while Danielson assisted the game-winning goal. On Sept. 10, Allison and Smits went back to work, scoring a goal apiece as Danielson again assisted on the game winner in a victory over Coker. After dropping a match at Barton, Smits, Danielson and Deirdre Ball all had goals in the second half of a 3-0 home victory over Brevard. Beauregard assisted on two of the scores, helping the team move to 3-1 at home. In the team’s home conference opener against Young Harris, the team fell behind 1-0 before responding with five goals over a 30-minute span. Smits tied the match before Allison struck for a 2-1 advantage. Smits then took a pass from Allison and connected on what turned
out to be the game-winner. Heaven Tylee and Akeyla Furbert added scores quickly thereafter as Beauregard and Cyndle McGuinness were each credited with assists. USC Aiken dropped its next two contests as both were on the road, but the squad showed stellar resolve during a stretch where it played three of the four matches in front of a home crowd. The Pacers lit up Georgia Southwestern for five goals, marking the most the program had scored since Oct. 25, 2010 in a win over Coker (8-1). Allison netted two goals and had two assists while Ball, Beauregard and McGuinness all found the back of the net for scores. The team shut out its second straight opponent, downing Flagler 3-0 on Oct. 9 behind a pair of goals from Smits and another from Taylor Simmons. Vodicka’s team stepped out of conference for a pair of wins, downing Columbia (S.C.) 3-1 and Lincoln Memorial 2-1 in overtime. Against LMU, Smits found Gillespie for the golden goal just 2:04 into the extra period after the visitors tied the match with just two seconds left in
regulation. Although the LMU victory marked the last one of the year for the squad, one of the most dramatic, exciting matches in recent history came against the Lakers of Clayton State. Trailing 3-1 late in the second half, Allison netted two goals in a three-minute span, tying the match. The Pacers ended the contest with a 3-3 draw against the nationally-ranked opponent. For her effort, Allison picked up PBC Player of the Week honors. Edens and Westphal combined for one of their best efforts on the season in the 110-minute double-overtime shutout draw at UNC Pembroke. USC Aiken played 11 home matches this season – and boasted an amazing 7-3-1 record in front of the home crowd. The Pacers, although losing five standout seniors in Joi Chrishon, Aubrey Danielson, Alli Edens, Kyle Maguire and Melissa Westphal, should be ready to make a deep run in the conference tournament in 2014.
