THIS IS USC AIKEN The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs.
When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW
Coming off a 10-12 record and narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament in 2013, head coach Steve Dahm has the University of South Carolina Aiken women’s tennis team is ready to march toward the postseason in 2014. “Our goal is to make it to regionals,” Dahm said. “We set competitive goals as we play in the toughest conference in Division II. Each day, we want to go out and make improvements on the court. If every student-athlete does that, our record will reflect it and we will reach our goals.”
The squad returns an abundance of talent, including upperclassmen Caitlyn Lawrence, Franziska Regel, Margot Simon, Sabrina Tam and Shauna Williams. The team also returns sophomore Julia Arruda. Dahm brought in four freshmen that will add tremendous talent throughout the line-up. Charlotte Greenwood, Victoria Jasko, Ella Rhodin and Nadine Tusiama will begin their first years playing for the Pacers in 2014. In singles action, Simon will bolster the No. 1 spot as she has become a leader on the team both on and off the court. Tusiama has been very aggressive on the court, attacking the net well during the preseason. She could very well find herself at the No. 2 singles position on opening day. Jasko, Arruda, Regel and Williams will round out the singles line-up. Currently, Dahm feels that all four would be fine playing anywhere from No. 3 to No. 6 and all will benefit the team.
nearby Newberry on Feb. 11 before returning home to face Coker (Feb. 15) and UNC Pembroke (Feb. 16). Dahm’s team will then play four consecutive road matches, including a pair of league contests. The Pacers play at Anderson (Feb. 19), Montevallo (Feb. 22), Clayton State (Feb. 23) and Erskine (Feb. 27) to round out the first month of the season. In March, Pacer Nation will benefit as it will get to see USC Aiken play at the Tennis Complex eight times. Dahm’s squad hosts Pfeiffer (March 1), Mount Olive (March 4), Francis Marion (March 6), Georgia Southwestern (March 8), Columbus State (March 9), GRU Augusta (March 25), Limestone (March 27) and Lander (March 29). The lone time the team hits the road is to face Flagler in Savannah, Ga., on March 22. During the final month of the regular season, the Pacers have just two home matches while playing three away from the friendly confines of the USC Aiken Tennis Complex. On Apr. 1, the team travels to Queens before hosting North Greenville (Apr. 2) and Young Harris (Apr. 5). The squad concludes the regular season with matches at North Georgia (Apr. 6) and Georgia College (Apr. 12) prior to the conference tournament. Should the Pacers continue to improve, the immensely talented squad could make a run at the conference tournament and return to the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
Greenwood, Tam, Lawrence and Rhodin will be pushing the four for playing time during singles action. In terms of doubles competition, nothing has been set currently as the competition has been too close in the preseason. However, Lawrence should figure into the doubles line-up as she has been outstanding during the fall. “We are still working on getting everything set for doubles play,” Dahm said. “The entire team plays doubles really well so a lot may depend on who meshes well together. “No matter what line-up we have in doubles play, the six on the court will be very competitive and will continue to be pushed by the rest of the team.” The 2014 schedule will be a challenging one for the Pacers. The team opens the year with a conference contest at Armstrong on Feb. 5. However, the team will take a break from league play over the next four matches. On Feb. 7, the squad travels to Belmont Abbey before hosting Clark Atlanta on Feb. 9 in the home opener over Homecoming. USC Aiken hits the road for a match against

The Pirates were able to claim the regional title, but the Pacers still concluded the year 19-5 overall. AASU went on to win its second straight national crown a couple weeks later. The Pacers as a team won 13 of their final 15 matches in 2009.

Three USC Aiken men’s tennis players were chosen to the 2009 NCAA Division II Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s All-America team at the conclusion of the 2009 spring campaign. Bruno Seves was tabbed to the team as a singles player, while Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne were selected to the team as a doubles tandem. Seves had become the program’s first ever All-America selection one year earlier in 2008. In 2010, USC Aiken once again had two players chosen to the ITA All-America team as Gregory Andrade and Juan Xavier Ponce were named All-Americans by virtue of ending the year ranked ninth nationally. 2013 REVIEW The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s tennis team under the direction of 12th-year head coach Steve Dahm finished its 2013 campaign with an overall record of 10-12. The Pacers went 5-8 in Peach Belt Conference play this season. The Pacers were ranked as high as 44th nationally and ninth in the regional rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. USC Aiken began the season by starting out 6-2 in the month of February, with the only losses coming to nationally top-ranked Armstrong and Clayton State. During this stretch Shauna Williams was named the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 19. Williams joined teammate Margot Simon (April 2, 2012) as the only USC Aiken women’s tennis players to claim the award in program history. USC Aiken began March with two straight road victories over Benedict and Georgia Southwestern. The Pacers claimed four singles matches to come from behind after being down 2-1 following the doubles portion of the matchup with Georgia Southwestern. The Pacers would claim two more consecutive road matches over league foes to begin April by besting Flagler and Lander. USC Aiken defeated Flagler, 6-3, on April 1, and beat Lander, 5-3, on April 3.
The Pacers fell to sixth-ranked Columbus State in the PBC Tournament quarterfinals, and dropped the elimination matchup to 33rd-ranked Augusta State to end the season. Simon led the Pacers with a 14-7 singles record on the season and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Simon was also awarded the Student-Athlete Leadership award by the Student Life Office and the USC Aiken Athletics Department. Giovanna Ramos and Williams also each had double-digit win totals in singles competition on the year. Ramos won 11 matches, while Williams claimed 10 victories. USC Aiken’s Caitlyn Lawrence, Franziska Regel and Simon were all named to the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic Team.

PEACH BELT CONFERENCE Vision Statement: The Peach Belt Conference is committed to providing through its dependent collegiate members, a forum for student participation in athletic, academic and co-curricular events under the auspices of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Division II. We will exemplify the characteristics of a premier intercollegiate conference that prides itself on the inclusion of students of all demographic groups who wish to participate in a well-rounded sports program. Our institutions, our academic goals, our athletic aspirations reflect a communality of purpose and a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. History: Entering its 23rd year of existence in 2012-13, the Peach Belt Conference has cemented its status as one of the elite Division II conferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 32 national championships and 28 national finalists. Starting with only two championships in 1991, men’s and women’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 15 championship sports with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field in the spring of 2013. The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and began play in fall 1990. The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national championship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf championships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06.

The PBC is in the midst of another dynasty as the Armstrong men’s and women’s tennis teams captured the 31st and 32nd national championships for the conference last year. The Pirates have won four women’s and three men’s national championships since 2008. Armstrong’s achievement was the highlight to one of the most successful seasons in league history. Peach Belt teams advanced to the national championship round of competition in 10 of our 13 sports. The Armstrong women’s soccer team reached the Final Four while the Flagler volleyball team went to the Elite Eight. The Montevallo men’s basketball team played in the National Championship game while the Lander women’s team reached the Elite Eight. The Flagler softball team reached the world series while the Georgia College and USC Aiken men’s golf teams reached the final eight match play at the National Championships. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000. Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State University on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. For the 2012-13 season, the league is expanding once again with the addition of Young Harris College, giving the Peach Belt 14 members for the first time in its history. David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.
