This is USC Aiken ď„–
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.
An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College 4
Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview Fresh off another NCAA Tournament appearance, the 2015 USC Aiken squad is arguably head coach Kenny Thomas’ deepest and most talented since his arrival on campus. With 32 home games, the Pacers could possibly secure the top seed in the region should things go according to plan.
Infield
The Pacers’ infield is extremely talented despite losing Ryan Metzler, who was selected in the MLB Draft last summer. Returning at first base is USC Aiken’s all-time career putout leader in Ty Barkell. A season ago, Barkell registered a .343 batting average and pounded out 10 round-trippers while driving in 58. Sophomores Cory Bryant and Rob Youngblood should fill the role at second base for the departed Metzler. Bryant saw time in 24 games a season ago, earning a pair of starts. The Aiken, S.C., native batted .357 and held a .455 on-base percentage. A transfer from Georgia, Youngblood produced two seasons of batting at least .400 at Parkview H.S., while guiding his team to a National Championship as a sophomore. Sean Miller returns at shortstop for Thomas’s team. While starting all 53 games last season, Miller belted out a .379 average on 74 hits. During a one-week stretch in 2014, he went nine-for-10 in a three-game series. Chaz Pal will fill the void at the hot corner for TJ Costen, who returns to a more familiar role for him – in the outfield. Pal is a junior transfer that attended Volunteer State CC. There, he earned all-conference accolades. Thomas will have a bevvy of options behind the plate this season as redshirt-juniors Robert Ard and Max Schoen, along with sophomore Zach Moon, continue to battle it out for the starting spot. All three have the chance to compete and all could see valuable time catching this season.
Outfield
The Pacers return everyone who started virtually every game in the outfield in 2014 while adding Costen in center field. Costen filled in nicely at third base a season ago, but will be more comfortable in center field. A season ago, Costen led the team with 58 RBI and slugged nine roundtrippers while maintaining a .507 slugging percentage. Kody Belcher, who transferred to USC Aiken prior to the 2014 season, started 50 games last year and will make the short move to left field. The offensive catalyst scored 53 times and tied for the team lead by swiping 24 bases. All-region and all-conference performer Tyler Moore returns for his junior season after an outstanding sophomore campaign. In 2014, Moore hit .377 and led the conference with a school-record 10 triples. He also accounted for 122 total bases and a .547 slugging percentage while tying for the team lead with 24 thefts. Senior Matt Bosse started 50 games last season and performed well in left field. He could still see time in the outfield, but will start the year off as the designated hitter. Carrying one of the most feared bats in the PBC, Bosse registered 10 home runs in his first season at USC Aiken and drove in 54 while tallying a .544 slugging percentage.
Pitchers
Thomas’ squad is extremely deep this year on the mound. Several of his pitchers could see time starting and there is no shortage in the bullpen. Transfer Forrest Koumas comes to USC Aiken from South Carolina. Through three years with the Gamecocks, Koumas appeared in 47 games, starting 20 times. No stranger to pressure, Koumas earned a quality start in the College World Series, allowing just one run in 5.2 innings of work in a 2-1 victory over Florida as a freshman. 10
Newcomer Erik Davis will give Thomas’ team a lefthanded hurler on the weekend. He has performed well since his arrival from Georgia Perimeter College. Local product and newcomer Trevor Hutto could also earn starts on the weekend. The junior from North Augusta, S.C., went 5-2 with a 2.1 ERA at Florence-Darlington Tech. Sophomores Matt Hissong and Nick Yobbi, along with senior Ben Black, could all see time as middle relievers or weekday starters. Hissong earned eight starts as a freshman while appearing in 15 games. He shut down then-No. 2 Lander with a four-hit, one-run performance. Yobbi saw action in 12 games as a freshman, starting eight while piling up a 3-1 record. Black was outstanding last season, seeing time in 20 games while earning a 6-1 mark. James Lynch, Sam Daniel, Black, Hunter Hubbard and Cole Lee could all be called upon to close out a game for the Pacers. Lynch led the team with five saves in 2014 as he struck out 18 batters in just 16.2 innings of work (16 appearances). Daniel appears to have returned to his 2013 form where he earned a pair of saves before suffering an injury. Hubbard hurled 4.2 innings in six games as a rookie. In all six contests, USC Aiken would go on to win. Lee saw time in 15 games in 2014, earning a save in 13.2 innings of work.
Schedule
first month of the season with a three-game set that it hosts against Georgia College (Feb. 27-28). Nine of the 15 games the Pacers play in March are away from home. After opening the month with a three-game series at Georgia Southwestern, the Pacers host six consecutive games, starting with Chowan (March 10-11). The team entertains Francis Marion (March 14-15) before rounding out the six-game stand by hosting Newberry (March 18). USC Aiken hits the road for six straight games, coming at North Georgia (March 21-22) and at Montevallo (March 28-29). During the last full month of the regular season, the Pacers leave Aiken, S.C., for only three games. The squad hosts 13 games and 15 of its last 18 games to finish out the regular season. The team faces Paine (Apr. 1) before a three-game slate against UNC Pembroke (Apr. 3-4). After a road game at Newberry (Apr. 7), Thomas’ team returns home for a series against rival GRU Augusta (Apr. 10-12). A non-conference game at Catawba is a mid-week affair (Apr. 15), but the Pacers host Emmanuel (Apr. 16) and Georgia Gwinnett (Apr. 19). After playing a road game at GRU Augusta (Apr. 22), the Pacers complete the regular season by hosting six straight games. This includes Emmanuel (Apr. 23), Flagler (Apr. 25-26) and Catawba (May 1-2).
For the sixth straight season, the Pacers open their season by hosting Lincoln Memorial. It starts the first of seven straight home games for USC Aiken. Following the Railsplitters, Trevecca Nazarene comes in for a threegame series prior to Florida Tech stopping by for one game on Feb. 9. Thomas’ team hits the road for six of its next seven outings. On Feb. 14, the team plays the first two games of a three-game series at Armstrong State. The squad hosts Paine (Feb. 18) before hitting the road for a three-game series at Lander (Feb. 21-22). USC Aiken closes out the 11

The Coaches Kenny Thomas Head Coach
In 15 seasons as head coach of the USC Aiken baseball program, Kenny Thomas has re-established the Pacers as a force in the Peach Belt Conference and a perennial top-25 team in NCAA Division II. During the 2010 season, Thomas became the winningest coach in USC Aiken baseball history. Thomas heads into the 2015 campaign with 545 wins in his time as the head Pacer skipper. Thomas also surpassed the 1,000-win plateau as a college head coach in USC Aiken’s win over Flagler on March 2, 2013. Thomas earned his 500th victory guiding the Pacers in a three-game road sweep over then 10thranked Lander. Thomas is presently 1,065-530 in 27 seasons as a head coach. He is currently in the top-40 among active NCAA Division II coaches for wins. His .637 winning percentage as the Pacer skipper places him in the top-30 among active NCAA Division II head coaches. During the 2014 campaign, Thomas’ team once again was ranked for the majority of the season en route to a 36-17 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. His team posted wins over two top-five programs and also broke four school records. He coached first-team allconference selection Derek Beasley and had several players near the top of the national statistical rankings at the conclusion of hte season. The 2013 season saw a number of milestones for Thomas and the Pacers as he led the team to a 42-13 overall record. The Pacers won the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. Thomas was selected the Peach Belt Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Southeast Region Coach of the Year for
the 2013 season. The PBC Coach of the Year honor is the second of Thomas’ career (also 2009). The Pacers were nationally ranked in every poll during the year, reaching as high as No. 1 nationally. The Pacers were ranked in the Top-30 in 32 straight national polls dating back to 2012. USC Aiken also was chosen as the second seed in the Southeast Region of the 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship. Thomas has led the Pacers to seven NCAA Tournament appearances (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2014) in the last 10 seasons. The 2012 season saw USC Aiken finish at 37-18 while finishing the year ranked 16th nationally after being ranked as high as third during the season. The 2012 season marked the 11th time in the past 12 years that the Pacers have won at least 30 games. The Pacers encountered some tough luck in being left out of the Southeast Regional after being dropped by Lander one game from the PBC Tournament Championship. The Pacers went 27-6 at home on the year and saw many players receive individual accolades as they enjoyed another successful year. The 2011 USC Aiken baseball team was ranked as high as 16th nationally. USC Aiken concluded its year with a record of 29-21. The 2010 Pacer baseball team was ranked as high as sixth nationally at one point during the regular season. The Pacers finished the year with a record of 32-19.

USC Aiken’s 2009 baseball team ended the season tied for 10th in the final Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Top 30 poll. The final ranking of 10th was the highest for the Pacers under Thomas, who was chosen as PBC Conference Coach of the Year for his mentoring of the 2009 Pacers. USC Aiken ended the 2008 season ranked 11th, while they concluded the 2005 season 12th. The Pacers reached as high as No. 2 nationally in 2009 en route to their second ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. The Pacers’ prowess during the regular season helped USC Aiken earn top honors in the Southeast Region, enabling the program to host its second ever NCAA Division II Tournament regional. The Pacers advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive season before bowing out to NCAA Division II Baseball Championship semifinalist and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Belmont Abbey in the first game of the championship round. USC Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional. In 2008, Thomas and his staff guided the Pacers to a school-record 47 wins and a second-place finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. USCA went 47-17 overall and 18-9 in the Peach Belt Conference, finishing just one win behind PBC champion Columbus State. It was April 23, 2006 when USC Aiken knocked off sixth-ranked Francis Marion 5-2 in Aiken to notch Thomas’ 200th victory at the helm of the Pacers. The Pacers went 45-19 that season, at the time the most wins in Thomas’ USCA tenure. In 2005, Thomas’ Pacers went 40-19 including a 16-14 mark in PBC play to advance to the program’s first NCAA South Atlantic Regional in a dozen years. On February 12, 2002, USC Aiken knocked off Limestone College 14-8 to hand Thomas his 100th victory at USC Aiken while his 50th win came on April 4, 2001 in a dramatic 8-6 victory over Newberry in 10 innings. In 2004, the Pacers opened the 1,000-seat Roberto Hernandez Stadium of which Thomas and Athletic Director Randy Warrick were instrumental in securing a one million dollar donation from the 16-year Major League Baseball veteran. Since the stadium’s opening, USCA is 194-73 at the state-of-the-art ballpark for a .727 winning percentage. In addition, USC Aiken hosted the 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2014 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournaments. In addition to being chosen as the PBC Coach of the Year in 2009, Thomas was named Coach of the Year in 1989, 199396, and 1998 by his fellow coaches and was selected in 1995 and 1999 as the National Junior College Athletic
Association Eastern District Coach of the Year. Thomas’ success has not gone unnoticed by the community. Over the past seven seasons, the Pacers have finished in the top 15 in Division II in home attendance. As part of Thomas’ annual Pack-the-Park day promotion a school record 1,806 fans attended Roberto Hernandez Stadium on April 15, 2012 to watch USC Aiken take on the UNC Pembroke Braves. Thomas has also instilled in his team the confidence needed to win the big games as the Pacers have won 102 games played against ranked opponents in the past 12 seasons, including 53 games in the last five seasons. The Pacers posted 17 wins over ranked opponents in 2009. As a player, Thomas earned NAIA All-American honors his senior year as a catcher while at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn. Following his graduation in 1978, Thomas began coaching a Stan Musial summer league team. In nine summers, he led his team to a national championship (1985), a runnerup finish (1986) and a third place finish (1984). Thomas also became a local scout for the New York Yankees (1980-81), Cincinnati Reds (1981-82), and St. Louis Cardinals (1982-88). After becoming head coach at Volunteer State, Thomas remained with the Cardinals organization in a part time capacity until 1995. Thomas has coached 54 players who have gone on to be drafted in professional baseball drafts, 93 All-Conference players, six conference Players of the Year, 16 AllAmericans, one Southeast Region Player of the Year and one National Player of the Year. In the summer of 2012, the San Diego Padres drafted former USC Aiken standout Stephen Carmon in the 10th Round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Also, the 2008 Daktronics Player of the Year and 2008 Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Chad Jacobsen was drafted in the 18th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Thomas is also involved in the local community. His work with the Aiken AMBUCS club has garnered him honors by that organization that serves to award college scholarships to physically handicapped high school students.

By defeating the Trojans, the Pacers earned a wealth of
all-conference team and Moore earned all-region accolades. The Pacers’ Moore, Beasley and Ty Barkell each broke school records while the team also garnered a new school mark. Moore established the school mark for triples in a season while the team also totaled a new single-season record for three-bag hits. Barkell’s steady work at first base allowed him to establish a school record for putouts while Beasley produced a school mark for career starts by a pitcher. USC Aiken opened the season in similar fashion as it has in recent years – against a familiar foe in Lincoln Memorial. The squad recorded a spectacular opening-day start by Derek Beasley while Nick Yobbi, Jack Padgett and Caleb Smith all saw time on the mound en route to the 8-2 victory. Five Pacers etched multi-hit performances, including Ben Donath’s threehit parade that included a double and a home run. Danny Wissmann’s outstanding outing in the second game of the season allowed the Pacers to register a 10-0 victory. Despite falling 8-5 in the third contest, Thomas’ team regrouped for the best tournament in Division II – the Prestige Appliance Classic. The three-day event fielding three teams ranked in the top 10 and another that received votes. All four teams – Shepherd, Tampa, Mount Olive and USC Aiken – went
confidence, which turned into an eight-game winning streak. During the run, USC Aiken swept Belmont Abbey prior to hitting the road for the first time in 2014. In easy fashion, the Pacers routed Francis Marion in two of the three games while winning the middle game of the series by a mere two runs. Thomas’ team stayed on the road for three games the following weekend at Flagler. USC Aiken notched a 9-8 win in the opener, but dropped the final two against the Peach Belt foe. In a mid-week affair, the Pacers pounded Paine 17-0 as a tune-up for another PBC Tournament competitor, Armstrong. USC Aiken reeled off a 7-6 10-inning victory on Saturday before splitting with the Pirates on Sunday. The loss to close out the series marked the lone time the squad would lose in seven contests as Thomas’ squad swept Chowan in two games before besting Young Harris on the road 12-8. After the Young Harris series, USC Aiken returned home to win five straight and eight-of-nine. The team bested Paine for the second time on the year before breezing past North Georgia in a three-game sweep.
