This is USC Aiken ď„–

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added.

An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College 4

Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview ď…Š The University of South Carolina Aiken team is looking to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. With the amount of talent head coach Jerry Snyder has returning, in addition to the newcomers, the Pacers should be well prepared for a solid 2015 campaign.

Daring played in 25 games during her sophomore season and could see time not only behind the plate, but could also spell Thrower at first base as she did from time to time in 2014. She registered four homers last year, including what turned out to be the game-winning two-run homer against Columbus State.

Infield

David had an outstanding career at Cox Mill H.S. where she was a four-year all-conference selection.

At first base, Snyder could have multiple players here throughout the year. However, sophomore Magan Thrower will look to improve upon her rookie campaign that saw her produce six home runs and 17 RBI in 45 games. Fellow second-year standout Madison Labrador could remain at second base. As a freshman, Labrador played in 50 games and drove in 14 runs. She accounted for four homers, including one in her first career at bat. Battling Labrador is senior Makenzie Barbor. During her first year on the team, Barbor saw action in 21 games and yielded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. A defensive replacement and pinch runner for the most part, Barbor recorded a .324 on-base percentage in limited plate appearances. At the hot corner is junior Samantha Chubb. After transferring from Aiken Tech last year, Chubb exploded onto the scene as a dominant power hitter. She posted a team-high 10 round-trippers and drove in 38 runs while slugging .529 in 46 games. Chubb registered a .926 fielding percentage despite playing just a few yards away from home plate on several occasions. Senior Ashley Metts should solidify the infield with her outstanding defensive play at shortstop. During her first year at USC Aiken, she posted a .975 fielding percentage after totaling just three errors in 119 chances. Offensively, she tallied six homers and 22 RBI while playing in 50 games. Behind the plate, the team lost Alyssa Cook due to graduation, but returns Andrea Daring while adding newcomers Ericka David and Sydney Murphy.

Murphy was also a four-time all-conference selection coming out of Finneytown H.S., in Cincinnati, Ohio. Twice she batted over .500 and led her ASA team to the national tournament on three occasions.

Outfield

Snyder boasts arguably the best defensive outfield in the conference with Sarah Montei patrolling center field. The junior is coming off a year that saw her register three homers and 21 RBI despite being asked to bunt over former all-region standout Kaitlyn White for much of the season. Defensively, Montei had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on 57 chances. She registered 53 putouts to go along with four assists, turning one double play. In left field, senior Victoria Burkett should see the starting role. Last year, she played some in right field but is arguably the most versatile student-athlete on the team. In 2014, she played in 45 games while earning 32 starts at various positions. Rookie Lyndie Dorgan saw plenty of time in right field during the fall season and could be there once again on opening day. She was the Class 2A Player of the Year and was a four-year all-state honoree at Gilbert H.S. Dorgan could see time in multiple roles for the Pacers. Battling Dorgan for the opening day spot in right field is fellow newcomer, junior Dani Reeves. She comes from USC Sumter where she registered a .373 batting averaged and a .576 slugging percentage. A local product, Reeves was an all-region selection coming out of Aiken H.S. 10

Pitchers

Snyder lost arguably the best pitcher to ever play for USC Aiken with the graduation of India Kornegay. However, he returns a wealth of talent in third-year hurler Taylor Morgan. He also added some outstanding talent in transfer Danielle Payne, in addition to newcomers Karly Kinard and Lyndie Dorgan. Morgan has already won 21 games during her career and has tossed 35 complete games. The junior has 308 strikeouts, averaging 6.98 per game for her career. Payne is well prepared for the PBC, having played at Francis Marion. With the Patriots, she registered six wins while striking out 63 in 107.1 innings of work. Prior to Francis Marion, Payne won 30 games at Aiken Tech. Dorgan was impressive during the fall season as she was forced into pitching duties multiple times due to injuries. At Gilbert H.S., she recorded 69 wins and is used to having several roles on a team. Kinard is a local product that struck out 182 batters in just 130 innings as a senior. She garnered all-state accolades and was a two-time all-region honoree. She is coming off an injury during the fall season, but should help the depth of the deep pitching staff.

Raleigh, N.C., for a five-game weekend tournament. At the Shaw Softball Challenge, the team takes on WinstonSalem, Seton Hill, Slippery Rock, Lees-McRae and Mount Olive. The team has a small break before playing at South Atlantic Conference foes Carson-Newman (March 3) and Lenoir-Rhyne (March 6) before hosting Montevallo on March 8 in the PBC home opener. The Pacers step out of league play for a mid-week doubleheader at Claflin (March 18) prior to hosting four straight PBC schools. USC Aiken entertains GRU Augusta (March 20), Armstsrong State (March 22), Columbus State (March 27) and Georgia Southwestern (March 29) before playing its last non-conference road doubleheader of the season (March 31 at Erskine). In April, Snyder’s squad hosts just three teams while playing away from home five times before the league tournament. The Pacers host Flagler (Apr. 1), Belmont Abbey (Apr. 8) and West Georgia (Apr. 14). The team plays at Young Harris (Apr. 5), at North Georgia (Apr. 10), at Georgia College (Apr. 12), and at UNC Pembroke (Apr. 17) before wrapping up the regular season at Francis Marion (Apr. 19).

Schedule

The Pacers have just 10 home dates, totaling 20 games this season. Part of this is due to a huge tournament the team is playing in for the second straight year in Raleigh, N.C. USC Aiken opens its season with four straight home non-conference games. Snyder’s squad hosts Queens on Thursday, Feb. 12, before entertaining Newberry on Feb. 17. After that, the Pacers are away from home until a March 8 contest. During the time USC Aiken is away from home, the team kicks off its conference schedule. On Feb. 19, the team plays a doubleheader at Lander before heading to 11

The Coaches Jerry Snyder Head Coach

Currently the coach with the longest tenure in the Peach Belt Conference and the only coach in the league to have coached since the PBC’s inception, USC Aiken head Softball coach Jerry Snyder enters his 28th season at the helm of the Pacer program in 2015. After the 2014 season, Snyder now owns a career record of 663-623-1. The 2014 campaign was one of the most memorable in USC Aiken history. Snyder guided the program to a 34-16 mark, tying the school record for wins. His team earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Southeast Regional after completing PBC play with a No. 3 seed by going 15-7. His team won two NCAA Tournament games, marking the first two victories by the USC Aiken program in NCAA Tournament history. Collectively, the team allowed just 134 runs, establishing a school record. Snyder coached two all-conference and all-region performers in addition to having an All-American in India Kornegay. His hurler, Kornegay, established every career school record and became the first Division II student-athlete to strike out every batter while throwing a perfect game, earning her NFCA National Pitcher of the Week honors. The Pacers went 25-21-1 in 2013, advancing to the semifinals of the PBC Tournament by defeating No. 13 North Georgia. His 25th year in 2012 would bring a milestone 600th career which was earned when the Pacers defeated Pfeiffer 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on April 6, 2012. USC Aiken concluded the 2011 softball season by making its second appearance in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. The Pacers finished the 2011 season with a record of 26-18. The Pacers ended play in the extremely tough PBC with a record of 9-11. USC Aiken opened the 2010 season ranked in the top 15 in the nation. The Pacers advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals for the second consecutive year before ending the year with an overall record of 23-23. The 2009 season was Snyder’s best. USC Aiken concluded the campaign a program-best 12th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll of 2009. The first Pacer squad to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament, USC Aiken ended the 2009 campaign with a 34-16 record. The Pacers’ 2009 mark garnered the 2009 USC Aiken softball team the best winning percentage (.680) in program history. USC Aiken’s 34 victories in 2009 tied them for second in program history for the most wins in a single season. The Pacers also tied the school record for the fewest runs allowed (139), equaling the 2006 team for the fewest runs given up as a team in a single season in school history.

winning streak and the stretch helped USC Aiken to claim a victory in 12 of its next 13 games to stand at 18-7 after a 4-0 win over Tusculum on March 8. The Pacers would go 13-5 the rest of the regular season to earn the second spot in the Southeast region by the start of the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Florence, S.C. The Pacers ended the year ranked in the final five NFCA polls, entering the poll for the first time in school history at No. 24 on April 8. The sixth Snyder team to claim 30 or more victories in a single season, the 2009 Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the top-20 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position at USC Aiken in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995. Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the record of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program. “The biggest highlight since I have been here is that my players have graduated and have gone on with their lives to become successful people,” Snyder said. “You should measure your success with what your studentathletes do in the classroom, instead of what they do on the field.” The program has posted 20-win seasons in 19 of the past 20 seasons. During his time as head coach, the Pacer program has had 20 All-Conference players, a Peach Belt Player of the Year, three Peach Belt Freshmen of the Year, 10 AllRegion players and two All-Americans. The program has also had four players honored as CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. Snyder and his wife Kelly have two sons, Tony and James. The Snyder family resides in Aiken, S.C.

The 2009 campaign was an incredibly special year for the Pacers with Snyder earning his 500th career win earlier in the year. The win was just a sign of things to come for the Pacers as they continued to embark on one of the greatest seasons in school history. After splitting with UNC Pembroke on Feb. 15 to claim that special 500th victory, USC Aiken went on to earn its first ever national ranking en route to its first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The second game win over UNCP led to a season-high eight-game

The Archives  2014 Season Review Heading into the 2014 season, the University of South Carolina Aiken softball team was ready to make its mark in the Peach Belt Conference while earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. With an abundance of talent returning and the wealth of newcomers taking the field, head coach Jerry Snyder knew his team could make 2014 a special season. USC Aiken not only clinched the No. 3 seed in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, but also earned the No. 6 spot in the NCAA Southeast Regional and won a pair of games in the tournament for the first time in school history. The squad also registered 36 home runs, which is second most in school history. From the first day of practice, Snyder knew he had a talented team with a pair of all-region student-athletes in India Kornegay and Kaitlyn White. However, the newcomers stepped up more than imagined, helping build the team into the powerhouse it was, winning a school-record tying 34 games. It started with the first game of the season when Kornegay tossed a no-hitter in the 8-0 win over Coker. The victory gave the Pacers confidence as they embarked on a five-game winning streak to start the season, including a sweep of the field at the Claflin Tournament. USC Aiken split a pair of games at Newberry, winning a crucial 1-0 contest. On Feb. 19, the team hosted Lenoir-Rhyne, who is perennially in the top-25. The squad earned a split with the Bears as well – and L-R eventually earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. After dropping the second game of the doubleheader against the Bears, USC Aiken hit the road for the Shaw Tournament. The team went 4-1, but the most memorable part of the two-day affair came from the right arm of Kornegay as she struck out all 18 batters while throwing a perfect game in the 10-0 win over Paine. It marked the first time in Division II history someone had accomplished the feat, earning her PBC Pitcher of the Week and NFCA National Pitcher of the Week honors. The squad finished off the Shaw Tournament with an improbable come-from-behind win over NCAA Tournament foe Mount Olive by a 7-5 score. The Pacers had trailed the Trojans 4-0 after the top of the first, but rallied back for the win. The momentum gained by that victory sparked a six-game winningstreak and the team won eight-of-nine, including a 5-1 record during home games of that stretch. In one of the two wins at West Georgia, Kornegay struck out a school-record 19 batters. Although USC Aiken lost its next four games – all of which were on the road – Snyder’s team bounced back with a 3-0 win over Flagler. A loss to the Saints in the second game did not deter the Pacers as they won 11 of their next 13 contests as all were against league competition.

During the stretch of wins, one came over the eventual-PBC Champion and NCAA Southeast No. 1 seed, North Georgia. Kornegay threw another no-hitter in the victory and Taylor Morgan narrowly missed out on a no-hitter in the second game of the doubleheader. In the win over GRU Augusta, Kornegay became the first USC Aiken student-athlete and just the third in PBC history to strike out 1,000 batters in a career. On Senior Day, a late rally propelled the Pacers past NCAA Tournament participant Georgia College by a 6-5 count. Morgan shined in the nightcap as the team won 4-1. After losing in the quarterfinal round to Columbus State in the PBC Tournament in the rainy conditions by a 9-8 score, USC Aiken still earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Although the squad was eliminated from the conference tournament, White earned all-tournament team honors as she tied the league- and school-mark for triples in a game. The squad dropped the opener to Armstrong, but a pair of one-hitters by Kornegay helped the Pacers to a 2-0 win over Georgia College and a 5-0 victory over No. 2 seed Anderson. During the season, all of the members of the team made significant contributions to the team, helping the squad reach its goal of the NCAA Tournament. Makenzie Barbor was solid defensively as she was one of four that concluded the season with a perfect fielding percentage. Victoria Burkett played in 45 contests and was a solid defensive player. Burkett, like Montei, was perfect in the field and had an outfield assists. Samantha Chubb had an amazing season, entering the top-10 list for USC Aiken in career home runs. Despite having just arrived on campus in the fall of 2013, Chubb swatted 10 round-trippers and finished with 38 RBI, both of which were team-high honors. Chubb also sported team-high honors in slugging percentage (.529) and assists (58) while playing the hot corner. Alyssa Cook overcame an injury early in the season to become a staple behind the dish for the Pacers. She appeared in 34 games, starting 30. She led the team with 267 putouts on the season to go along with 19 assists. Andrea Daring played in 25 games, earning 15 starts. She came through in the clutch, recording four home-runs, including one as a pinch hitter. Daring was versatile, filling in at catcher and first base. Rookie Brielle Jungblut came on strong, posting a .375 batting average while earning PBC Freshman of the Week honors. Kornegay concluded her career with every USC Aiken career pitching

18

record and made her way into the top 10 in several categories in the PBC ledger. In 2014, Kornegay struck out a school-record 316, won a school-record 24 games, tossed 12 shutouts and held the opposition to a .154 batting average. With her outstanding senior campaign, Kornegay earned Daktronics All-America honors. Madison Labrador was fourth on the team with four round-trippers. Nearly one-third of her hits went for extra bases and she was dynamic on defense at second base. Ashley Metts’ defensive prowess proved she could play shortstop as well as anyone in the PBC. She started all 50 games and was second on the team with six round-trippers. Metts was also second on the team with 51 putouts against just three errors. Sarah Montei was fourth on the team in batting average, but played an integral part of the team’s success. She posted a team-high 11 sacrifice hits, helping push White into scoring position on numerous occasions. Arguably one of the best outfielders in the region, Montei netted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage to go along with four assists while starting every game. Morgan pitched in 26 games, earning 22 starts. She picked up 10 wins and had the lone save out of the USC Aiken bullpen. Taylor struck out 151 batters and held opponents to a .217 batting average.

defenses. Traylor saw action in 34 games and scored 10 runs while stealing three bases. White led the team with a .376 average. She topped the squad in total bases (82) and steals (21). Her six triples led the PBC and she concluded her career in several career lists at USC Aiken, including batting average, on-base percentage and steals. Brittney Williamson rounded out her career by becoming one of the best in school history in sacrifice hits. In 2014, she was second on the team with 10. Virtually every time she got a hit, she came around to score. In addition to Kornegay and White earning a pair of all-region honors and being named first-team all-conference, Alyssa Cook was tabbed the Peach Belt Conference Elite 15 winner as she was the student-athlete with the highest GPA participating in the conference tournament. Despite Snyder losing two all-region performers, the cupboard is far from bare for USC Aiken. With the addition of a talented recruiting class, the Pacers will once again vie for a spot at the top of the PBC and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
