This is USC Aiken

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully

accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview It is the dawn of a new era for the University of South Carolina Aiken women’s soccer team. Coming off the team’s first Peach Belt Conference Tournament appearance in recent memory, the Pacers return virtually an entire roster but have added a new person at the helm in first-year head coach Hilary George. The Pacers have a difficult schedule they have to traverse in order to reach the postseason for the second consecutive season. The team opens its season with back-to-back away games against Pfeiffer and Catawba before opening its home portion of the slate against NCAA Tournament foe Lenoir-Rhyne. The squad plays at NCAA Tournament participant Wingate before entering league play Sept. 19 at Georgia College. The Pacers have seven home matches on the season and also step out of conference play when they travel to Newberry. In all, George’s team faces five programs that reached the NCAA Tournament last year, including Elite Eight participant Columbus State. Last year’s team had to overcome adversity with injuries that hampered several starters. However, USC Aiken should be at full strength by the second match of the season, coming Sept. 6 at Catawba. The team lost five student-athletes to graduation, but George inherits a deep group that is comprised of 10 student-athletes in the senior class and eight sophomores. The squad has just one junior (transfer) and five freshmen, including a pair of redshirt-freshmen. “The leadership the seniors provide is greatly appreciated,” George said. “They have bought in to what we are trying to do and they are willing to adapt how they’ve played the past three years very quickly. The seniors are writing their legacy and they have a chance to change the way the program is perceived this season.”

options as a scoring threat when we are in the final third,” George stated.

FORWARD

“With the forwards being very competitive, this will create more scoring

George inherits two of the most prolific scorers in USC Aiken history in Hannah Allison and Megan Smits. The pair has provided a lot of scoring for the Pacers during the last two years and should continue to do so in 2015. Additionally, senior Hazel Kelley stepped up last season and garnered plenty of meaningful minutes on the pitch. She has improved over last season and should be ready to contribute immediately. Akeyla Furbert was solid a year ago and will see time here and in the midfield. “There is good chemistry on the pitch between Hazel Kelley and Akeyla Furbert, but the power of Hannah Allison and Megan Smits creates a very tough, competitive atmosphere,” George said.

“We are looking to get more numbers into the attack this year and have more

opportunities for several student-athletes. It is great because we have quality depth at the position. MIDFIELD USC Aiken’s strongest position is the midfield, where George has a plethora of talent that can attack on the flanks or drop back to become a defensive midfielder. Furbert broke through several times last year, helping alleviate the pressure from Allison and Smits as she found the back of the net in critical moments. She will continue to push forward and will be counted on to become more of an offensive threat.

Jenna Beauregard, Taylor Simmons, Olivia Stiltner and Heaven Tylee have all been huge assets in the team’s success over the course of their careers. Each has perfected their own role perfectly and it should be a seamless transition under George. Sophomore Sarah Moore was a huge boost in 2014 during her rookie campaign. Her ability to come up big in key situations will allow her to not only see the field a lot this season, but have an even larger role. Brye Epley saw valuable minutes as a freshman and could push for an even larger role in 2015. Amanda Mazzie saw limited time in 2014, but looks to

GOALKEEPERS Nicole Cranny started every match between the pipes in 2014 for the Pacers, playing 1629:40. She had several strong outings, including a 10-save performance in the victory over Lenoir-Rhyne. Karin Cadwalader saw some time in goal a year ago and has been solid in the preseason. “Karin Cadwalader has done extremely well for us thus far,” George stated. “Nicole Cranny performed well but is coming back from an injury.”

expand her role and her 5-10 frame could help the squad with 50-50 balls. George has a strong newcomer that could see a lot of time on the pitch in rookie Amanda Giordano. “We have a lot of talent in the midfield,” George stated. “We have a lot of experience and it is the strength of our team. “Sarah Moore has proven to be very effective as a holding midfielder and Kimberly Jergenson will add quality minutes. Jenna Beauregard adds composure and leadership while Heaven Tylee adds tenacity and a nevergive-up attitude.” DEFENDERS The back-line lost a lot of depth from the 2014 team. However, the squad has some valuable experience returning in the form of seniors Emily May and Taylor Simmons along with sophomores Tori Caldwell, Kayla Muse and Casey Rish. All three gained valuable experience during their rookie campaigns and could be counted on to have a bigger role this season. George has a pair of newcomers on the defensive side of the pitch with junior transfer Abby Frick and rookies Jergenson and Kaitlyn Armstrong. “The defensive line should be a lot stronger this year with the addition of Abby,” George stated. “Casey Rish is coming back with a lot of experience together they should anchor down the line. “USC Aiken also has the experience of Taylor Simmons, which will be beneficial,” George mentioned. “The outside backs will see a lot of minutes this year as they will transition into the attack. “Kaitlyn Armstrong will also give us quality minutes here. She is aggressive and is always on the attack.”

2015 USC Aiken Women’s Soccer

The Archives  2014 Season Review It was a season of firsts for the current student-athletes on the 2014 USC Aiken women’s soccer team. The squad tied a top-10 team, had an NSCAA National Player of the Week and earned a berth in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament for the first time since the 2008 campaign. Although everything started after the completion of the final match of 2013, the pieces were put into place for a solid season shortly thereafter. The team came together and showed positive signs during preseason practice – through conditioning and skill work. The hard work did not seem to pay off through the first 80-plus minutes of the season-opening match against No. 10 Wingate on Sept. 4. Trailing 3-1 in the 83rd minute, Hannah Allison headed home a pass from Jenna Beauregard, making it a 3-2 contest. Less than six minutes later, Caroline Gillespie found Allison for her second goal of the night and what turned out to be the equalizer. The tie for head coach Sue Vodicka’s team marked the second consecutive season it had tied a top-25 program, with the Pacers tying Clayton State in 2013. Two days later, USC Aiken registered a 2-1 victory over Emmanuel, helping the team push its record to 1-0-1. In the win, Allison headed home both scores for Vodicka’s squad off of passes from Beauregard and rookie Tori Caldwell. It resulted in Allison being named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week and the NSCAA National Player of the Week. The award was just the second in history for the PBC and the first time a USC Aiken women’s soccer player had earned the national recognition.

Later in the week, Vodicka’s team put together one of its best all-around matches for the season. The tremendous performance helped the Pacers upend NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 participant Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C., by a 3-2 count. Trailing 2-0 heading into the second half, Vodicka managed to get the best out of the team. The final 45 minutes against the Bears marked Megan Smits’ second goal of the season and a pair of goals by Akeyla Furbert. Allison was credited with a pair of assists while Smits found Furbert on the game-winning tally. Between the pipes, Nicole Cranny played every minute and stopped 10 shots en route to the victory. Although the team lost a non-region match against St. Leo and an overtime contest to Newberry, the Pacers opened PBC play with a shutout of 2013 PBC Tournament Finalist Georgia College. After applying an abundance of pressure in the opening minutes, USC Aiken broke through the Bobcats’ defense with a score in the sixth minute of action when Caldwell connected with Allison for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The Pacers hit a bit of a skid, dropping their next three matches, including one against Division I foe Mercer. However, Vodicka’s team bounced back against Lander, earning a double-overtime draw. Gillespie found Furbert for a score just 6:46 into the contest and despite giving up a second-half score, Cranny came up huge, stuffing six shots while playing all 110 minutes. The tie gave USC Aiken momentum that it used, winning the next three contests. In a tough road trip, the squad

posted a 5-0 shutout at Georgia Southwestern before earning a come-from-behind win at Flagler. Against Georgia Southwestern, Smits tallied a pair of goals while Beauregard, Caldwell and Hazel Kelly all found the back of the net. Gillespie turned in arguably the best performance of her career, adding a pair of assists. At Flagler, USC Aiken trailed 1-0 heading into the second period, but Gillespie found Haley Pipkin for the tying goal in the 49th minute. Then, Furbert intercepted a pass just a few seconds into overtime and quickly found the back of the net for the game-winning tally. In one of the most exciting matches under Vodicka, the Pacers needed overtime before dethroning Montevallo behind Beauregard’s outstanding shot from a sharp angle on the right side of the pitch for the winning goal. Allison scored a goal and handed out a pair of assists in the match while Smits scored two and had an assist.

2015 USC Aiken Women’s Soccer

It was not until the Senior Day match against UNC Pembroke did the Pacers solidify enough points to earn a berth in the postseason for the first time in six seasons. The duo of Smits and Allison struck once again as Smits found Allison for the team’s lone score in the chippy contest. Although the Pacers lost to top-seeded and NCAA Elite Eight participant Columbus State in the PBC Quarterfinal, it gave the team something to build off of. The 2014 seniors consisted of Deirdre Ball, Kim Beyer, Caroline Gillespie, Ella McDaniels and Haley Pipkin. All contributed heavily to the team and were the core of what the program stands for. By putting the time together and helping the Pacers reach the first step toward a conference championship, USC Aiken’s seniors left the program in solid hands for years to come.
