This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready
for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully 4
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s basketball team, under the guidance of head coach Mike Brandt, looks to build off a solid 2014-15 campaign with a wealth of returning experience and an influx of talented newcomers this season. The team, which is coming off a spot in last season’s Peach Belt Conference semifinals, not only envisions taking the next step in league play, but making a triumphant return to the NCAA Tournament this season. This year, the Pacers have five seniors on the roster. The team has five juniors on the team, including one transfer. USC Aiken returns one freshman and added a pair of rookies to the already-talented roster.
GUARD Brandt returns a slew of guards this season – and all have tremendous experience that should help the squad run the offense efficiently. Tiffany Addison returns after a pair of solid campaigns at the point guard spot for her senior campaign. A year ago, she played in 20 games, starting a pair of contests and looks to be used even more this year. “I hope she’ll be a sparkplug for us,” Brandt said. “She has great energy and great love for the game.” Senior Stephanie Ball returns to the line-up after running the point guard spot for much of the 2014-15 campaign. She started 19 games while playing 28. During her first year with the squad, Ball averaged 5.4 points and 2.1 assists a game. “Stephanie has got to be our leader at the point guard position,” Brandt stated. “She has been healthy all preseason and is proven to be one of our best answers at the point guard spot. I look for her to have a very solid year while increasing her scoring opportunities.” Senior Katelyn Grisillo is returning from an injury that forced her to miss much of the second half of the season. Prior to her injury, Grisillo dished out 2.1 assists per night and canned 79.2 percent of her free throws. “Katelyn has worked hard coming off an injury form last season,” Brandt said. “She is close to 100 percent. Katelyn has improved her shot and has great leadership qualities. She should get a lot of quality minutes.” Junior Kate Duff played in all 30 games during her sophomore campaign. She started one game and averaged 6.6 points a contest while dishing out 1.7 assists. Defensively, Duff recorded 42 steals.
“Kate has improved so much from her freshman season,” Brandt stated. “I’m excited to see her play at a new level. Kate’s mental aspect and attitude have turned around and I think she’ll really shine on defense. Kate is a fighter on the boards and if her shooting becomes consistent, she could be a very good guard in the PBC.” Junior Carly Gilreath came into her own near the end of last season. She played in all 30 games, earning three starts. Gilreath averaged 4.2 points and was second on the team with 32 made three-point field goals. “Carly is much improved from last season,” Brandt said. “She finished last year on a high note after some injuries to her teammates. Carly will continue improving and working hard and if she does that, she will get quality minutes for us.” Redshirt-freshman Sade Johnson redshirted last season. The Orangeburg Wilkinson H.S., product accounted for 9.2 points and three steals a night as a senior. “I think her defense and rebounding are both good strengths of Sade’s,” Brandt stated. “She can penetrate and kick the ball out very well, which will help her get some more time on the court as she learns more about our system.” Freshman Aubrey Lukacsko was a four-year letterwinner at Pickerington H.S. North. She was a two-time first-team all-conference honoree and a two-time first-team District 11 honoree. “Aubrey has shown a lot of improvement in the fall,” Brandt said. “She is really a fighter and is very coachable. Aubrey tries to do what is asked of her and will definitely compete for playing time.” Junior Jasmine Coach is a versatile guard/forward that has improved immensely since her sophomore campaign. A year ago, she appeared in 29 games while accounting for 1.2 points and 1.3 rebounds a night. “Jasmine is much improved,” Brandt stated. “She worked on her shot a lot in the offseason. If she is consistent with it, she could be a very big factor for us in all facets of the game because her defense and rebounding are excellent.” Junior Alexis Ware saw action in 25 games during her sophomore campaign. The guard/forward netted 1.2 points a game a year ago but canned 80 percent of her free throws. “We are waiting for her to come into her own,” Brandt said. “She has unlimited potential but she has to continue to focus on being a little tougher both mentally and physically.”
10
Newcomer Rachelle Aupont averaged a double-double at Eastern Florida State College. The guard/forward totaled 717 points and 589 rebounds in two seasons while being tabbed an all-conference selection. “Rachelle does a lot of things that you don’t coach,” Brandt stated. “She’s a very good competitor and finds a way to get things done. Rahcelle will definitely get a lot of minutes and if she learns to fit in the system a little better, she could be a very good player in the PBC.”
FORWARD Senior Mariah Durian played in 14 games before missing the rest of the season with an injury. At the time of her injury, Durian was averaging 11 points and 3.9 rebounds a night. “Mariah worked hard coming off a pair of surgeries,” Brandt mentioned. “She is way ahead in her recovery process, which is typical because of the effort she gives. By the second semester, Mariah will be ahead of where she was last year at that time, which is very exciting.” Sophomore Emry Tsitouris returns after a stellar rookie campaign that saw her pick up PBC Freshman of the Year honors while also being tabbed a third-team all-conference selection. She appeared in 30 games, averaging 11.5 points and nine rebounds a contest. “Emry is coming off an injury, but because she’s such a great competitor, she won’t let it slow her down,” Brandt stated. “Emry is much improved from last season and has improved a lot with her outside shot.” Rookie Baylea Loven was a four-year starter at Madison H.S. She was a three-year all-conference and all-tournament team selection, averaging a double-double her last two seasons. As a senior, the all-district honoree accounted for 17.1 points and 13 rebounds per game. “We really like Baylea’s aggressiveness on the board and her ability to take the ball to the basket,” Brandt said. “The more she learns the system, the more productive she’ll be. Baylea will have an immediate impact on the team.
CENTER Senior Kassy Johannsen had an outstanding junior season. She played in all 30 games, earning 28 starts. Johannsen averaged seven points and 2.6 blocks per contest, ranking second in the PBC in blocks and blocks per game.
“We expect a lot of great things from Kassy,” Brandt stated. “She runs the floor as well as any post in the PBC. Kassy will continue to have great defense and we look for her to record the blocked shots career record this season. She is a catalyst for us on the inside.”
SCHEDULE The Pacers have a very difficult schedule once again this season. After a pair of exhibition games at Colorado State and Colorado, the team plays a pair of neutral site contests to open the season in Greenwood, S.C. USC Aiken plays against Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial Nov. 13-14 in the PBC/SAC Challenge. Brandt’s team opens its home slate Wednesday, Nov. 18, against Wingate. The contest against the Bulldogs marks the first of five straight home dates on the slate. USC Aiken hosts Queens (Nov. 21), Johnson C. Smith (Nov. 23), Florida Southern (Nov. 29) and Shaw (Dec. 1) before hitting the road for a six-game stretch. The Pacers stay out of league play with contests at Anderson (Dec. 3) and Johnson C. Smith (Dec. 12) before playing the rest of their games against conference competition. The squad travels to Georgia College (Dec. 16) and Columbus State (Dec. 19) before taking a break for the holidays. Upon returning from the off period, the team opens 2016 with games at Armstrong State (Jan. 2) and Flagler (Jan. 4). The Pacers host UNC Pembroke (Jan. 6) and Flagler (Jan. 9) before a two-game stretch at Lander (Jan. 13) and Georgia Southwestern (Jan. 16). After a home date against Montevallo (Jan. 18), the team makes the trek to Florence, S.C., for a contest at Francis Marion (Jan. 23). USC Aiken plays four of its next five outings at home, starting with the contest against the Pirates (Jan. 27). The squad entertains Young Harris (Jan. 30) before a trip to UNC Pembroke (Feb. 3). The team hosts Lander (Feb. 6) for Homecoming and takes on Clayton State (Feb. 10) in the Convocation Center. The Pacers travel to nearby Augusta (Feb. 13) for a battle before continuing their road trip at North Georgia (Feb. 17). The team hosts the Patriots and Jaguars for the final two regular-season contests and could host a first-round PBC game as well.

On the defensive side of the court, Brandt stresses aggressive person to person defense. He also will mix up the pressure with a soft zone press and even incorporate a half court trap at times. Because of his strategy of “mixing things up,” his teams have consistently ranked at the top of the scoring defense category. In Brandt’s 24 years of college coaching, his teams have reached the magical “20-wins” 13 times. Only two of those years have they finished below .500. Prior to coming to Aiken, S.C., Brandt coached for 13 years in his hometown of Sterling, Colo. at Northeastern Junior College. While there, Brandt finished with a string of six 20-win seasons, climaxed by a trip to the NJCAA National Basketball Championships. recovering from another injury forced another student-athlete not to be at the top of her game the entire season. The squad posted an 18-12 mark and played arguably one of the toughest non-conference schedules in Division II. Brandt’s team completed the conference portion of the slate with a 13-6 mark, which was a four-game improvement from the prior season. USC Aiken opened the season against future NCAA Tournament foe Carson-Newman and narrowly missed pulling out a victory against the Eagles before falling by a mere point. However, the team bounced back for a seven-point victory over another South Atlantic Conference competitor the next night in Lincoln Memorial. The Pacers opened their home slate against NCAA Sweet 16 foe Anderson, dropping an overtime contest to the squad by four points. Once again, the team bounced back, defeating Barton in front of the home crowd. In that win, Mackenzie Reese and Mariah Durian notched 14 and 13 points, respectively while Emry Tsitouris registered the first of her many double-doubles with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action.
a lead over the Cougars of Columbus State, which wrapped up the season with an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Pacers lost the lead in the final minutes, dropping the contest 71-65. The new year started off strong for the Pacers, winning four straight games and eight-of-nine to open January. During the run, Brandt’s squad defeated Armstrong State twice, Flagler twice, UNC Pembroke, Georgia Southwestern, Montevallo and Francis Marion in overtime in front of a rousing Homecoming crowd. The team continued winning, coming out ahead in five of the eight games it played in February, including victories over the Lady Braves, against Clayton State, against North Georgia and against the Patriots. By virtue of the second-place finish in the PBC East Division, USC Aiken hosted a PBC Quarterfinal game against Clayton State on Feb. 28. Reese led the comeback after the Pacers trailed by as many as 13 in the first half. She guided the team to a 59-54 victory, netting her 1,000th career point in the process. Tsitouris 29

top-10 rebounding games in the Pacers’ Division II history. She also picked up PBC Player of the Week honors en route to being named PBC Freshman of the Year and third-team all-conference. Reese not only scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 11th student-athlete to do so since USC Aiken moved to Division II, but also earned second-team all-league accolades. She also garnered all-tournament team honors. However, it was not just about a couple of student-athletes. The team’s success was predicated on the team aspect. Every player contributed greatly to the success of the squad. Tiffany Addison played in 20 games, earning a pair of starts. She turned in a pair of impressive defensive performances with three steals against Montevallo and Lander, while also sparking the offensive with her attacking style to beat the press. Stephanie Ball saw playing time in 28 contests, notching 19 starts. She missed a few games due to injury, but bounced back strongly. Her 14 points sparked the Pacers to their first win over the season, coming against the Railsplitters. Ball was also clutch against the Patriots, netting 14 points and dishing out a seasonbest seven assists. Amaura Brandt played in all 30 games, earning 26 starts. She upped her scoring average to 9.1 points per game during her sophomore season. Against Livingstone, she netted 26 points and also hit the mark in the win over North Georgia. Brandt canned eight three-point field goals in each contest, but connected on 88.9 percent of her attempts against the Nighthawks. Jasmine Coach saw time in 28 games. She posted a season-best six points in the win over Armstrong State while playing a season-high 14 minutes in the win over Barton. Her three assists were crucial in the overtime win over the Patriots.
but still saw action in all 30 games. Over the final 12 games, Gilreath scored in double figures five times, including a career-high 15 points (all from the three-point line) in the win at Francis Marion. In the three-point win at Clayton State, she canned 11 points, including three field goals from downtown. Katelyn Grisillo was having a solid season before suffering a season-ending injury after 17 games. A pass-first point guard, Grisillo distributed a season-high six assists against Livingstone and five against Columbus State. Against LMU, she had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4-1. Kassy Johannsen’s minutes increased during her junior season as she is on the verge of becoming the most dominant shot-blocker in USC Aiken history since moving to Division II. Johannsen scored in double figures seven times, including 18 against Flagler. On two occasions she blocked eight shots, coming against Anderson and Francis Marion en route to 2.6 blocks per game. Emily O’Rourke battled injuries in the offseason but still managed to play in 21 games during her final year at USC Aiken. She played 5.2 minutes per game and drained six field goals on the season. However, her defensive presence at 6-2 made opposing coaches alter their game plan. Reese capped her career by netting 11.3 points per game as a senior while grabbing a career-best 7.6 rebounds a night. She reached double figures 22 times, including a season-high 18 against Lander. On multiple occasions she finished just shy of a triple-double. Reese wrapped up her career with 1,012 points and 555 rebounds. She’s just the fourth Pacer to have at least 1,000 points and 500 boards in her career (Division II). Alexis Ware saw time in 25 games and netted a season-best seven points against Lander. Despite losing Reese and O’Rourke to graduation, Brandt has built a solid core that should improve next year with the return of Durian and Grisillo. Additionally, the young team he had to play during the 2013-14 season has grown up and has become one of the most experienced teams in the region.
