This is USC Aiken

The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully

accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Our starters should be good and our pitching staff could be a real positive part of the team.” USC Aiken has four really experienced catchers on the roster. “It is tough to clog up the roster with four catchers, but all four are very good,” Thomas said. “Someone will have to play somewhere else and that could be Zach Moon, who has seen time in the outfield and at first base. He should be able to play multiple positions for us.” The infield lost a couple of valuable cogs in the line-up in Barkell and Miller, but the Pacers have a wealth of talent to replace everyone. “Brian Parreira is a sophomore transfer from Mount Saint Mary’s,” Thomas stated. “He came here as a catcher but is a good defensive first baseman. Brian is a great addition to the team. “Joey Smithers could be one of the only freshmen in the line-up,” Thomas continued. “Skylar Mercado could also see time at second or third base. Jonathan Banks and David Lankster are juniors that are very experienced. Tyler Ammerman could replace Miller at shortstop. He makes all the plays and has a chance to be a great player.”

The Pacers reached as high as No. 2 nationally in 2009 en route to their second ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. The Pacers’ prowess during the regular season helped USC Aiken earn top honors in the Southeast Region, enabling the program to host its second ever NCAA Division II Tournament regional. The Pacers advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive season before bowing out to NCAA Division II Baseball Championship semifinalist and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Belmont Abbey in the first game of the championship round. USC Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional. In 2008, Thomas and his staff guided the Pacers to a school-record 47 wins and a second-place finish in the NCAA South Atlantic Regional. USCA went 47-17 overall and 18-9 in the Peach Belt Conference, finishing just one win behind PBC champion Columbus State. It was April 23, 2006 when USC Aiken knocked off sixth-ranked Francis Marion

Eastern District Coach of the Year. Thomas’ success has not gone unnoticed by the community. Over the past seven seasons, the Pacers have finished in the top 15 in Division II in home attendance. As part of Thomas’ annual Pack-the-Park day promotion a school record 1,806 fans attended Roberto Hernandez Stadium on April 15, 2012 to watch USC Aiken take on the UNC Pembroke Braves. Thomas has also instilled in his team the confidence needed to win the big games as the Pacers have won 102 games played against ranked opponents in the past 12 seasons, including 53 games in the last five seasons. The Pacers posted 17 wins over ranked opponents in 2009. As a player, Thomas earned NAIA All-American honors his senior year as a catcher while at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn. Following his graduation in 1978, Thomas began coaching a Stan Musial summer league team. In nine summers, he led his team to a national championship (1985), a runner-up finish (1986) and a third place finish (1984). The Coaches Phil Disher Assistant Coach Phil Disher enters his first year as an assistant coach with the USC Aiken baseball team. Disher comes to USC Aiken after spending three years at Georgetown as the hitting coach. He helped the Hoyas improve from a .255 team batting average in 2013 to a .279 mark in 2015. In his three seasons, Georgetown totaled 306 extra-base hits, including 123 in 2015. The Hoyas’ offense ranked third in the BIG EAST in 2015 in batting average and was second in the league with 23 round-trippers. Four student-athletes established career-high marks in homers in 2015. Disher mentored Georgetown’s first-ever BIG EAST Player of the Year, junior catcher Nick Collins, who batted .370 and led the conference with 78 hits, seven homers, 114 total bases and a .540 slugging percentage. Prior to his tenure at Georgetown, Disher spent two seasons at Wofford, where he worked with the hitters and catchers.

Disher was selected twice in the Major League Baseball Draft, first by the San Francisco Giants in the 45th round in 2007 and then in the 15th round of the 2008 draft by the Houston Astros. During his first year of professional ball, he was tabbed the MVP of the New York-Penn League while with the Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y. He finished playing professionally with the Astros’ organization when he was forced to retire due to an injury. Disher graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2007 with a degree in exercise science and a minor in coaching. During his four-year career with the Gamecocks, he was a two-time all-SEC performer and was a third-team All-America honoree by the NCBWA as a senior. Disher was twice named to NCAA all-region squads. He was also selected to a pair of SEC tournament teams and was named the MVP of the 2007 Virginia Regional. Disher served as the head coach of the Forest City Owls in the Coastal Plains Collegiate Summer League in 2014, leading the Owls to a first-half division championship and he was selected as the head coach of the all-star team.

Nolan Belcher Assistant Coach Nolan Belcher is in his third year as assistant coach with the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team and the second as the pitching coach. In 2015, Belcher’s group registered a 5.13 ERA and posted 427 strikeouts on the season. He worked closely with PBC and NCBWA Pitcher of the Week Forrest Koumas, who registered a school-record 18-strikeout performance at Georgia Southwestern. Belcher’s bullpen was solid as closer James Lynch tallied seven saves. Belcher recently completed an outstanding career at the University of South Carolina.

In 2014, Belcher helped guide the pitching staff to a third-place finish in the PBC while several hurlers landed spots in top 10 of the conference in various statistical categories. Three of his pitchers were drafted, including Caleb Smith, Danny Wissmann and Derek Beasley.

The Coaches Ben Donath Assistant Coach Ben Donath is in his first year as assistant coach with the University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team. Last season, he was an assistant coach with the USC Aiken softball team. Donath was a two-year standout for the Pacers after transferring from Middle Georgia.

As a junior, he played in 52 games, earning 36 starts while batting .295. He had 10 multi-hit performances that season to go along with seven multi-RBI contests. 2016 USC Aiken Baseball

Team Review The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team wrapped up its season with a berth in the Peach Belt Conference semifinals and narrowly missed out on making the NCAA Tournament despite facing an abundance of injuries throughout the season.

The offensive firepower was just getting started as the Pacers erupted for a season-best 24 runs in the opening game against UNC Pembroke, winning 24-6. In the win, senior Kody Belcher tied school records with three home runs and eight RBI. For good measure, Matt Bosse drove in five in the contest.

The Pacers completed the season with a 34-17 overall record, including an 18-12 mark against league foes under the direction of head coach Kenny Thomas. The squad finished fifth in the PBC regular season, but upended the Pitcher of the Year and Flagler in the opening round of the conference tournament.

USC Aiken won the series against the Braves and ended up posting 12 wins in the month of April, including nine straight.

The Pacers opened the season in fine fashion, winning its first six contests. In similar fashion to past years, USC Aiken started its campaign with Lincoln Memorial. Opening day was moved to Jan. 30, marking the earliest the team had taken the field. Thomas’ team came out strong against the Railsplitters, rattling off 11 runs in the opener. The high-powered offense continued to make things work by posting 15 and eight runs, respectively, in the final two victories of the series. USC Aiken upped its record to 6-0 after sweeping Thomas’ alma mater, Trevecca Nazarene. During the three-game series, the Pacers amassed 43 runs. The Pacers lost their next four games, including three to Armstrong State. However, the squad bounced back for a 17-11 victory over Paine. The win over the Lions helped jumpstart the team. The squad stayed hot, winning the series against Lander and Georgia College before sweeping Georgia Southwestern. After a pair of non-conference wins against Chowan, USC Aiken went back to work, taking the series from Francis Marion, pushing the record to 18-7. Against the Bobcats, Trevor Hutto shined, throwing eight innings without allowing a run while James Lynch closed the door in the 1-0 win. The pitching continued to be dominant in the series opener against the Hurricanes as Forrest Koumas established a school record by registering 18 strikeouts in the 2-0 victory. His effort not only allowed him to be named PBC Pitcher of the Week, but also NCBWA Region Pitcher of the Week. The Pacers dropped the series to PBC regular-season champion North Georgia, but came right back with a pair of road wins at Montevallo. After the series with the Falcons, USC Aiken returned home for a non-conference game against Paine and won 12-4.

The winning streak started with a nearly four-hour 13-10 win over rival GRU Augusta. The Pacers slipped past the Jaguars 4-3 in the middle game before finishing off the foe with a 10-4 victory in the series finale. USC Aiken stepped out of conference for a pair of wins against Emmanuel and one against Paine while also securing a nonconference victory over GRU Augusta on the road. In the final weekend of PBC play, USC Aiken bested Flagler in the first two outings before dropping the final contest. However, for the first time in Thomas’ career, the same player recorded back-to-back walk-off hits while driving in the same player with the winning run. TJ Costen supplied the offensive fireworks as he drove in Ty Barkell both days. The Pacers lost a pair of games to the region’s top team Catawba and needed to make a deep run in the PBC Tournament for a chance to play in the postseason. USC Aiken fell behind 3-0 to the Saints in the opening round, but rattled off nine straight runs, including a six-run third inning, in the 10-8 victory. Koumas picked up the win while Joe Marlow recorded the three-inning save. Although the win against Flagler marked the last victory of the season for the Pacers, the team’s ability to overcome several injuries proved how good the team could be. Barkell, a key cog in the line-up during his four years, missed 19 games while Tyler Moore missed 10. Bosse missed the final 17 games of his career. The injuries not only hurt the team’s chances of making the postseason, but also weakened the student-athletes chances for earning postseason honors. Despite the fact of missing so many games, the trio still put up impressive numbers – as they have throughout their careers. Barkell led the team with a .444 batting average and was second on the team with 46 RBI while Moore batted .362 and was second with 16 stolen bases. Bosse batted over .300 and was second on the squad with seven round-trippers.

Team Review However, the season was about much more than just the three that missed time. Chaz Pal put together one of the most prolific offensive seasons in recent history, finishing with a .393 average and a team-high 58 RBI. Randy Luckett stepped up and played in 39 games, totaling a .384 batting average. Costen was solid n center field while Zach Moon stepped in as an everyday player, tallying 17 extra-base hits. Sean Miller earned all-conference honors and posted a team-best 131 assists. Belcher led the team in homers with nine while Douglas Ard, Cory Bryant, Max Schoen and Rob Youngblood all stepped up. The pitching staff was one by committee, but a solid committee at that. The group combined for a 5.13 ERA and held opponents to a .282 batting average while striking out 427 batters in 454 innings of work. Koumas and Hutto shared team-high honors with six wins apiece while Lynch accounted for seven of the team’s eight saves. Marlow and Hunter Hubbard held opponents to under a .200 batting average among the everyday pitchers. Cole Lee was used in a variety of ways as was Nick Yobbi. Sam Daniel turned in some impressive performances as did Erik Davis. Matt Hissong returned to his freshman form as it got later into the season while Jared Felix caused problems with several teams with his delivery. Ben Black saw six starts, but played well in a wealth of ways and finished with a 3-1 mark.

Several players tied school records this season, including most hits in a game, RBI in a game, home runs in a game and most times hit by a pitch in a game. At the end of the day, the 2015 team will not be remembered for the 34-17 record or for tying school records, but for leaving it all out on the field. Day in and day out players stepped up at different times, helping the squad overcome obstacles and put itself in a position to succeed. If nothing else, this year’s squad will leave a lasting impression on future squads about coming together as a team.
