This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team is coming off a 22-17 campaign that saw some ups and downs throughout the year. Despite losing the final game of the season, energy on the returners faces senses a strong 2016 campaign after coming closer to beating the eventual National Champion North Georgia Nighthawks than anyone else did during the postseason. The squad returns an abundance of talent and added some tremendous student-athletes that gives the team a solid core for the seasons. This season, head coach Jerry Snyder has four returning seniors while also adding a senior transfer to the mix. Snyder has a trio of three-year letterwiners on the squad in Andrea Daring, Sarah Montei and Taylor Morgan while also boasting power hitter Samantha Chubb. He added fellow power hitting senior Kelli Shealy prior to the fall semester. The Pacers return junior Magan Thrower and bring back redshirtsophomore Brielle Jungblut, who missed the 2015 campaign. Sophomore Sydney Murphy saw valuable time a year ago while fellow second-year standouts Lyndie Dorgan and Karly Kinard played a solid role in the team’s success during their rookie campaign. USC Aiken bolstered its line-up in the circle with redshirt-sophomore transfer Chandler Terrapin. The Pacers added junior middle infielder Julianne Leduc as well as eight promising freshmen. Snyder inked Taylor Allen, Leah Boghosian, Hannah Culpepper, Janee McCarthy, Samantha Peka, Hannah Price, Lilly Shoaf and Sarah Timmerman. Despite having so many young faces on the team, the line-up should be strong this season against a tough schedule. “We scheduled heavily in the region,” Snyder stated. “We play some of the top teams in the region year-in and year-out – and this season is no exception. Although our non-conference slate is tough, it will prepare us for an extremely tough Peach Belt Conference schedule. Last year, we had a lot of contests on the road and we’ve tried to even that up this year,” Snyder continued. “It should bring us an advantage and could end up playing huge dividends as the year goes on.” Allen, a 5-7 utility player from Belvedere, S.C., earned all-state accolades her senior season. As a junior, she powered Midland Valley H.S. to a lower state championship. “Allen will play a good role on the team,” Snyder mentioned. “She has great speed and has a good short game with her bat.” Boghosian guided her team to a pair of District VII championships. In 2013, she led her school to the lower state title and helped the team reach the lower state championship in 2014. “We expect big things from Boghosian,” Snyder said. “She’s a very talented freshman and is improving daily.”

Chubb is coming off a team-leading .345 batting average in 2015. She has led the team in home runs and slugging percentage the last two seasons and is one of the biggest threats at the plate in the region. “Chubb has been an integral part of the team’s success over the last two seasons,” Snyder stated. “She is healthy this year and could leave USC Aiken as one of the biggest offensive threats in recent history.” Culpepper is a local product of Fox Creek H.S. She was a two-time all-state honoree and boasted a .478 batting average as a senior. “Culpepper could see time in the outfield as a freshman,” Snyder stated. “She is a hard worker that continues to improve.” Daring saw time in 36 contests, earning 35 starts a season ago. She was tabbed PBC Player of the Week once and tallied a .521 slugging percentage. “Daring is coming off a solid 2015 season,” Snyder stated. “She will see a lot of quality time at catcher and we hope she can provide even more offensive firepower this year.” As a rookie, Dorgan saw time in 23 games, earning 10 starts. She saw valuable time on the bases as a pinch runner, scoring four times.” “Dorgan will see some more innings in the circle this season,” Snyder stated. “She could also see time in the middle infield.” Jungblut redshirted last season, but was second on the team with a .375 batting average as a rookie in 2014. She posted a .405 on-base percentage and was named PBC Freshman of the Week during her first collegiate action with the team. “We missed having Jungblut a season ago,” Snyder stated. “It is good to have her back both in the outfield and as a slapper due to her speed.” Kinard, a local product from Beech Island, S.C., played in 14 games as a freshman, starting six times. She had five putouts in the field and singled in her first career at bat. “Kinard saw time in 14 games but is much improved this season,” Snyder mentioned. “She has worked on all facets of her game and will compete for playing time.” A solid infielder at St. John’s River State College, Leduc is part of a winning pedigree, having led her high school team to the district title as a senior at Middleburg H.S. “Leduc is a versatile student-athlete,” Snyder mentioned. “She could see time as a catcher, at third base and also a variety of support roles. Leduc is not only a smart softball player, but was an all-state academic selection at her last school.” McCarthy was an all-region honoree at South Aiken H.S. She was selected to the North-South all-star game after batting .346 a year ago.
“McCarthy can play a variety of roles on the team,” Snyder said. “She could see time at catcher, third base and support other positions as well.” Montei is one of the most feared outfielders in Division II and is one of the most productive athletes in the region. She is on the verge of closing in on several top-10 lists at USC Aiken offensively and is among the elite outfielders to ever don the Pacer jersey. “Montei has been a strong leader for us through her time on campus,” Snyder mentioned. “She has arguably the best arm for an outfielder in Division II and is the heart to this team.” Morgan started 20 games last year, boasting a 2.31 ERA in 145.2 innings. She struck out 165 batters, including 17 in the 1-0 11-inning victory over West Georgia on Senior Day. “We are looking for an outstanding senior season from Morgan,” Snyder stated. “She has had three good years here but this should be the best of her career.” Murphy started all 39 games as a rookie, posting a .283 batting average. Defensively, she was solid, registering a .987 fielding percentage and picked up PBC Freshman of the Week honors. “Murphy had a strong freshman season and we expect big things from her,” Snyder stated. “She played wherever we needed her last year and will see time in the middle infield this year.” Peka hails from nearby Grovetown, Ga. A two-time all-region selection, she picked up all-county accolades as a senior. She hit over .400 twice in her career at Evans H.S. “Peka is one of our catchers who has a bright future ahead of her,” Snyder said. “She’s always competitive and will see some innings behind the plate as a freshman.” A three-time all-state honoree, Price was tabbed the Upper State All-Region Player of the Year as a senior while batting over .500 all four years at West Oak H.S. “Price has a lot of potential,” Snyder stated. “She is a really good pitcher and could be an immediate threat at the plate as well.” Shealy is a transfer from Spartanburg Methodist. There, she batted over .320 twice while swatting 22 round-trippers. The two-time first-team all-region selection drove in 100 runs while posting 29 doubles and a triple. “Shealy is a welcomed addition to the team,” Snyder mentioned. “She has a big bat and will see time in the outfield.” Shoaf garnered a .364 batting average at North Davidson H.S. while leading her team to the state championship as a senior. She guided the squad to the conference title and the western regional championship as well.
“Shoaf is a versatile freshman that will push the upperclassmen each and every day as a catcher and at third base,” Snyder said. “She will see some quality time this year.” Terrapin redshirted a season ago after transferring from Western Carolina. In high school, she was a four-time all-state selection and a four-time Region Player of the Year. “Terrapin was injured during her time at her previous school,” Snyder said. “This year she should help make our team better in the circle.” Thrower has been an integral part of the infield the last two seasons. She has started 81 games already and is already among the top-10 in career putouts at USC Aiken. “Thrower had a really good fall campaign,” Snyder said. “She was good the last two years at first base and has improved steadily.” A two-sport standout at Abbeville H.S., Timmerman was a two-time all-region honoree for softball and volleyball. She picked up a pair of North-South selections for each sport. “Timmerman will play in the middle infield,” Snyder said. “She will see some time this year and will continue to progress as she is the shortstop of the future.” The Pacers open their season with four straight home games starting Feb. 7 against Mars Hill. The team hosts Claflin the following Saturday before heading to Coker on Sunday, Feb. 14. The team continues on the road with a contest at Limestone Feb. 20 before returning home to square off against Converse (Feb. 21). USC Aiken hits the road for doubleheaders at Newberry (Feb. 23) and Pfeiffer (Feb. 25) prior to opening PBC play against Francis Marion (Feb. 27) in front of the home crowd. Always tough Mount Olive heads to J.H. Satcher Field the following day for a doubleheader. Snyder’s team travels to Claflin (March 3) before facing region power Carson-Newman (March 5). After a trip to Flagler (March 9), the team returns home for another SAC foe in Lenoir-Rhyne (March 11). The Pacers travel to Montevallo (March 13) but return home for an evening doubleheader against Lander (March 16).
USC Aiken has to hit the road for 10 straight games starting March 22 at Erskine. The team then plays at Armstrong State (March 25), Augusta (March 30), Columbus State (Apr. 2) and Georgia Southwestern (Apr. 3) before returning home for the rest of the regular season. The last four doubleheaders are against Young Harris (Apr. 9), North Georgia (Apr. 10), UNC Pembroke (Apr. 15) and Georgia College (Apr. 17). The team begins postseason play Apr. 22 in Milledgeville, Ga.

The 2009 campaign was an incredibly special year for the Pacers with Snyder earning his 500th career win earlier in the year. The win was just a sign of things to come for the Pacers as they continued to embark on one of the greatest seasons in school history. After splitting with UNC Pembroke on Feb. 15 to claim that special 500th victory, USC Aiken went on to earn its first ever national ranking en route to its first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.

Pacers advanced to the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game before falling to NCAA Division II softball championship semifinalist and third-ranked North Georgia. In the top-20 all-time for NCAA Division II coaches in career wins, Snyder was appointed to the head coaching position at USC Aiken in 1988 shortly after being hired as an assistant coach. He became involved in softball when he was 12-years-old when his father taught him how to pitch. He went on to play for a men’s fastpitch softball team in his hometown of Short Gap, W. Va. Snyder began gaining coaching experience in recreation leagues in Aiken while he was a young man. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Augusta High School. He primarily worked with the pitchers for Beth Meyer’s Lady Jackets squad. Prior to becoming head coach at USC Aiken, Snyder worked at the Savannah River Site for EI Dupont until 1987 when he decided to return to college to get his degree. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from USC Aiken in 1991 and earned his Master’s in Sports Science from the United States Sports Academy in 1995. Snyder says he has several memories and highlights from his time at USC Aiken, but he is most proud of the record of his students in the classroom and after they have left his program.

Team Review Coming off its best season in USC Aiken history in which it won a pair of games in the NCAA Tournament, the 2015 softball team had a young, but strong core return in place. The squad had to battle a slew of injuries, but it was good enough to nearly knock off NCAA National Champion North Georgia in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. Head coach Jerry Snyder’s team wrapped up the season with a 22-17 record and finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league. Due to some injuries at the start of the season, Snyder was forced to alter his line-up for the season – and put student-athletes at positions they did not normally play. However, the team came together and started off extremely strong – and in many times – won games in dramatic fashion. In the season-opening doubleheader against Queens, the Pacers managed to plate a run in the bottom of the sixth while Taylor Morgan scattered four hits and did not give up an earned run in the 2-1 victory. Morgan was the hero in the second game, picking up the victory and driving in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Against Newberry, Magan Thrower’s single to left field allowed Victoria Burkett to cross home, giving the team a walk-off victory. The team was supposed to play in the Shaw Tournament, but it was cancelled due to the weather. Scrambling to find games, USC Aiken play NCAA Tournament foe Concord from the Atlantic Region and defeated the Mountain Lions 5-0 and 5-4. On Feb. 22, the Pacers played their first two league games at Lander. Despite having an 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Bearcats scored six runs, forcing extra innings. Although Samantha Chubb’s RBI was the eventual game-winning run, the contest was remembered for Ashley Metts tying a pair of single-game school records. Metts blasted two home runs and drove in seven runs, all of which occurred in the final two innings of play. The Pacers wrapped up the doubleheader with a 7-2 victory for the sweep while improving to 7-1 on the season. The squad continued its winning ways, sweeping Pfeiffer by identical 3-0 scores. In the second game of the doubleheader, Danielle Payne worked her magic, giving up just two hits while improving to 5-0.

USC Aiken went on the road and squared off against perennial power Lenoir-Rhyne. After dropping the first game, the Pacers bounced back in the nightcap. Burkett’s single up the middle plated Dani Reeves for the game-winning run in the 2-1 victory as Payne once again gave up just two hits in the contest. Against Montevallo, Morgan tossed a gem, giving up just two hits while striking out 10 in the 2-0 victory. Burkett and Chubb each blasted solo homers for the only two runs of the game. The Pacers quickly fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first in the second game against the Falcons. Metts pulled the team within one in the bottom of the first with a two-run blast while Makenzie Barbor tied it in the bottom of the fifth with a double. Payne went on to toss all 11 innings as USC Aiken won when Reeves hit a single that scored Metts in the 4-3 win. USC Aiken bounced back from a pair of losses to split with NCAA Tournament foe Carson-Newman as the win was powered by Andrea Daring’s two-run blast. Daring hit another round-tripper in the second game of the doubleheader against the Eagles. Returning home for six straight league games, Snyder’s team needed to continue its early season success and did so, going 5-1 during the homestand. The team swept powerhouse Columbus State by scores of 7-2 and 4-3. Daring homered in the opener but fell one game short of tying the PBC record for homers in consecutive games. Trailing 1-0 against Georgia Southwestern, the Pacers rattled off multiple runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings and ended the game on the mercy rule when Daring smashed a three-run opposite field homer in the 11-3 win. Payne scattered four hits in the 1-0 shutout in the second game as Thrower belted a solo homer to left in the sixth for the 1-0 win. The team split games against Flagler, Young Harris and Armstrong State before dropping four contests against North Georgia and Georgia College. On Senior Day, Snyder’s team honored Barbor, Burkett, Metts and Payne prior to the first game against West Georgia. The team started off in fine fashion, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first en route to a 10-1 five-inning victory. The final home game of the year showcased one of the best pitching performances in USC Aiken history as Morgan went the distance in the 11-inning,
1-0 win. She gave up just six hits, only one of which went for extra bases, while striking out 17 batters and walking none. Chubb ended the game with a solo shot to center field with one out in the 11th frame. Although USC Aiken did not win another game, the team put a huge scare into top-seeded North Georgia in the PBC Tournament. Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Metts launched a solo shot over the left field wall, but the Pacers eventually fell by a 2-1 count. Chubb led the team in several offensive categories while Burkett had the best season of her four-year career. Metts battled injuries throughout the season but managed to post a pair of school records. Sarah Montei became a force at the plate to go along with her strong right arm that saw her throw out a pair of runners at the plate while holding several more runners at third. Sydney Murphy tied for the team lead in doubles and led the team with nine sacrifice hits while playing multiple positions. Daring stepped up, blasting six homers on the season while having just four during her career heading into the 2015 campaign.
Thrower led the team with 265 putouts and was a big reason for the team’s early season success. Karly Kinard was used mainly as a pinch runner, but saw time in right field and was productive. She also notched a hit in her first collegiate at bat. Lyndie Dorgan saw time as a pinch runner but started six games. She also made three appearances as a pitcher. In the circle, Morgan led the team with a 2.31 ERA and struck out a team-high 164 batters. Payne picked up a team-best 13 wins and held opponents to a .232 average. Everyone contributed on the team and helped the young squad pick up 22 wins, including several over NCAA Tournament teams. The Pacers lose four student-athletes due to graduation and each made a valuable impact on this year’s team and future squads. The 2015 USC Aiken softball team was one that played up to its level of competition and fought extremely hard day-in and day-out. The 2015 team will be remembered as one that scrapped until the very end and never gave up. That in itself showcases what a true champion is.
Ericka David was solid behind the plate while Barbor was thrust into the role at second base and responded well, especially during the PBC Tournament by making several outstanding plays.
