This is USC Aiken ď„–
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team is ready to defend its 2015 PBC regular-season championship and make its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The program lost three starters, but the returners have an abundance of talent and experience on their side. Not one to back away from a challenge, head coach Glenn Cox’s 2016 schedule is filled with top-tier talent regionally in order to prepare his team for the postseason. In all, USC Aiken faces six of the other seven teams that made the NCAA Southeast Regional a year ago for a total of 10 regular-season matches. Additionally, the Pacers entertain NCAA South Regional participant Eckerd. “We’ve added a lot of size with our line-up,” Cox stated. “We can run a very effective 6-2 with big blockers in the front row at all times.” Middle Blocker Returning to the mix in the middle are Alicia Hines and Okwunne Ogbogu. Hines led the PBC in hitting percentage as a sophomore and will continue to be an impact player for Cox. Ogbogu saw the court from time to time as a freshman, but made huge strides in the offseason. Cox added USC Aiken women’s basketball career-blocks leader (for Division II) in the form of Kassy Johannsen. The senior was an all-state standout in Broomfield, Colo., in high school. With one semester left before she graduates, Johannsen’s quick timing could leave not only a lasting legacy on the hardwood for basketball, but also for volleyball. Johannsen could also see time on the right side. Rookie Christine Carroll looks to make a name for herself. The newcomer from Cincinnati, Ohio, stands at 6-1. Carroll was a force at Mount Notre Dame H.S., guiding the team to a pair of state championships and three district titles. “We have a very solid group in the middle,” Cox said. “Alicia led the PBC in hitting percentage last year. Kassy was the best shot blocker in school history for women’s basketball and that could transcend into a great season for her on the court. Okwunne did a super job in the spring and Christine brings a lot of offensive firepower to the team.”

Outside Hitter One position that has plenty of depth for Cox is at the outside hitter spot. Three-year starter Taylor Stratton leads a strong contingent of student-athletes. Stratton is closing in on 1,000 career kills and is coming off a season where she earned allregion honors. Julia Forster is a 6-0 junior who has seen her role increase on the team in each of her seasons as a Pacer. Forster increased her production to 2.25 kills per set and hit .205 last season. Senior Shawn Hotson could see time at the outside hitter position, but could also see time on the back line as a defensive specialist. Hotson has been a versatile student-athlete since her arrival on campus and this year should be no different. Freshman Julianna Hoekwater is coming off being ranked No. 1 in Class 5-A for defense and No. 5 state-wide. As a senior, she picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors for her region. Hoekwater has time to learn from her teammates, but will also push for playing time.
Junior transfer Amber Hendry is a versatile student-athlete that could see time on the outside or right side. The 5-11 standout from Sante Fe C.C. was a two-time all-area selection at Oakleaf H.S. “The returners are all very consistent,” Cox stated. “We will look for more of the same from them and each could dominate on the outside. The newcomers will continue to battle for playing time in a tightly contested position.” Right Side In addition to Hendry and Johannsen, who could each see time here, Cox could have redshirt-junior Brittany Faulkner or rookies Avery Macklin and Kelsey Spurlin on the court. Faulkner has the jumping ability and is a solid all-around student-athlete. She’s played behind All-American Ashley Diedrich, but could make a huge push this season. Macklin has something that can’t be taught – and that’s with her being 6’3”. Playing at St. Charles East H.S., Macklin led her team to a pair of IHSA Upstate Eight regional championships while earning all-conference honors as a senior. Spurlin had a solid career at Gaffney H.S. There, she was a two-time all-region standout, earned all-area accolades as a senior and helped her squad to a Region II-4A championship as a junior. “We are young on the right side,” Cox stated. “We have six people battling for a spot on the right side. Three newcomers are battling, but we have returners who could also see time here.” Setter One position where Cox did not have to reload was at setter. He returns all three who saw the court last season, including Emily Teelon, Lauren Howard and Chelsey Watts. Teelon garnered all-tournament team honors during the league tournament after making the switch back to the position upon her arrival at USC Aiken. Howard has seen constant improvement in her two seasons with the Pacers and was on the court for much of the time last year when running a 6-2. Watts saw limited action as a freshman, but has the ability to
push the upperclassmen for playing time. “Emily has proven to be our top setter from last year,” Cox said. “She’s doing a super job. Emily ahs great location and court leadership. Lauren and Chelsey will both be fighting for a spot to run the offense and either could see time when we run a 6-2.” Defensive Specialist/Libero Cox has a pair of seniors in Danielle Mercer and Hotson, along with rookie Rebecca Martinez, who will be fighting for playing time this season. Mercer saw her digs per set increase from 2.70 as a sophomore to 2.79 last year. A consistent performer throughout her time at USC Aiken, Mercer has 486 digs to go along with 37 aces. Martinez will push the others for playing time immediately. Having posted over 1,000 digs at Wellington H.S., she guided her team to a district title in 2015. During her sophomore year, Martinez was the catalyst for helping the team record an undefeated regular season. Hotson’s role could vary depending on her versatility and where she is needed the most. She will likely see more time on the front row than as a defensive specialist. With the returning talent that Cox has, the Pacers could be as good this year as in any year since his arrival. However, with the graduation of All-American Ashley Diedrich, the Pacers could be under the radar once again. The pieces are there for Cox’s team to make a lasting impact on the conference and region in 2016. “Daneille and Rebecca are two of the best defenders and passers in the league,” Cox stated. “They will be competing all year for the libero jersey and I’m excited to see it.” Schedule The 2016 schedule is once again very tough. The Pacers are coming off the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region and despite being picked third in the PBC preseason poll, the squad could find itself in the mix to host this year should it navigate the slate very well. In addition to the ever-tough PBC play, the Pacers have put themselves against the top teams in the region through crossover tournaments and other non-conference matches.

The Archives 2015 Season Review while Hines had four. The win helped keep the great start going as USC Aiken cruised past King and Belmont Abbey on the final day of the tournament by 3-0 scores. It was a season of firsts for the University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team. A record-setting season that came to an end too soon, but will be discussed as arguably one of the best teams in the program’s illustrious history. Head coach Glenn Cox’s 2015 team was one of the best in Division II and rightfully so. The squad had the returning Peach Belt Conference and Region Player of the Year in Ashley Diedrich. However, the team was loaded across the front line with returners Brittany Faulkner, Julia Forster, Alicia Hines, Aly Johnson, Jennifer Law, Ashley Lind and Taylor Stratton. Added to the mix a new setter in Emily Teelon, who stepped into the starting spot after the graduation of Sheila Walsh, to go along with sophomore setter Lauren Howard. The back line was arguably the strongest in the region and could have matched up against nearly anyone in the country with Monica Cardona, Shawn Hotson, Danielle Mercer and Katie Toman. Cox and his staff added a pair of newcomers who pushed the team each and every day in practice in rookies Okwunne Ogbogu and Chelsey Watts. The Pacers opened up the season with their best start in school history. The squad traveled to Armstrong State’s opening weekend and demolished its opponents by identical 3-0 scores, besting Lincoln Memorial, Tusculum and Brevard. With a week off, the team had plenty of time to prep for its own tournament, the USC Aiken Invitational. Cox’s team was up to the challenge, defeating Nova Southeastern by a 3-0 score in the opening match. The Pacers then hosted No. 12 Palm Beach Atlantic, who would eventually go on to make the NCAA Championship before falling to Wheeling Jesuit. USC Aiken used a total-team effort in the 3-1 win. Diedrich hammered home 20 kills to go along with 16 digs while Stratton posted 10 kills. Teelon dished out 47 assists. Defensively, Cardona and Toman each toppled the 20-dig mark as Cardona led everyone with 28 while Toman garnered 21. Hotson and Teelon reached double figures with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. At the net, Diedrich totaled five blocks

The Pacers blasted UNC Pembroke in the conference opener on the road, but lost back-to-back matches against Francis Marion and GRU Augusta by scores of 3-0 and 3-1. After defeating Georgia College in a rather quick 3-0 match, the team dropped its second road contest with a 3-1 defeat at Montevallo. However, Cox’s team turned it around despite losing three of its last four matches. USC Aiken reeled off its second-longest winning streak in the Division II era with 15 straight victories, including nine by a 3-0 score. In fact, only twice did the team get pushed to five sets during the tremendous winning streak. The Pacers started the streak on Oct. 3 at Columbus State, defeating the Cougars by a 3-0 count. The team registered a sweep of the Patriots, evening the year at 1-1 against FMU. In a weekend filled with crossover matches to get a better strength of schedule, USC Aiken entertained Mars Hill, Carson-Newman, Tusculum and Lincoln Memorial. The Pacers dispatched the opponents by scores of 3-0, 3-0, 3-1 and 3-0. The Pacers returned to league play on Oct. 14 against Armstrong State on Chick-fil-A night and promptly pounded the Pirates 3-0, setting up a match with the Saints of Flagler. On Oct. 17, Cox’s team won the first set against the Saints 25-18, but lost the second 26-24. The team rebounded with a 25-16 victory in the third frame, but found itself on the short end in the 25-17 loss. Trailing 4-1 in the final set, the team would have folded in the past, but an attack error gave the squad the ball with Toman dropping back to serve. With the score at 4-2, Diedrich and Hines blocked an attack before Toman rattled off back-toback aces for a 5-4 edge. The team jumped to an 8-4 advantage before Flagler could score again. Leading 8-5, back-to-back errors by the visitors pushed the margin to 10-5 as the team cruised to the 15-9 victory. USC Aiken recorded a sweep of Lander before going on the road to defeat the Bobcats and the Jaguars by identical 3-1 scores. The squad returned home for a

A win on Lander pushed the streak to 15, but the team saw its winning ways come to an end at Flagler by a 3-2 count. Heading into the final day of the regular season, USC Aiken, Armstrong State and Flagler all had chances to claim the regular-season title. However, the Bearcats upended the Saints and the Pacers took care of business against the Pirates by a 3-1 score, allowing the team to celebrate its first regular-season championship since the 2007 campaign. As the No. 1 seed in the conference, USC Aiken hosted the PBC Championship. The team downed Georgia College 3-1 before sweeping Lander 3-0. However, the Saints took home the conference tournament championship. Due to the body of work by the Pacers, the team secured the No. 1 seed in the Southeast Region for the first time in school history. The team came up short against Erskine in the NCAA Tournament, but the squad accomplished so much during the season it will definitely be talked about for years to come. Diedrich was named the PBC Player of the Year for the second straight season, becoming just the third person to earn the honor twice. Toman was named a second-team all-conference performer while Diedrich and Teelon picked up all-tournament team honors. Diedrich, Stratton and Toman garnered all-region accolades. Diedrich ended her career with 1,336 kills, which is the fourth most in school history. Toman’s 540 digs are the second most in a single season. The team set the school record for digs in a match and digs in a five-set match while also putting itself into several categories’ top-10 lists throughout the year. Cardona registered a season-high 32 digs against GRU Augusta and posted at least 20 digs four other times. Faulkner made the most of her opportunities, totaling blocks on a pair of occasions. Forster posted double-digit kills eight times while hitting at least .500 in a pair of contests, including a .524 with 12 kills and one error in the win over Belmont Abbey. Hines notched a career-high nine blocks against the Jaguars and tallied at least four blocks on eight occasions. She also reached double-digit kills four times, including a 10-kill, zero-error performance against FMU.
every time she was on the court. Johnson posted a season-high six blocks in the PBC Quarterfinal win over Georgia College and went for at least five blocks five times. Law overcame an injury that forced her to miss the 2014 season, but battled back for her senior campaign. In the win at Georgia College, she registered her first career kills, block and dig on subsequent plays. Law posted a career-high three kills on a pair of occasions and had blocks in four matches. Lind jumped out of the gate with a 10-kills, .563 attack percentage performance in the season-opening match and was versatile all year long. At times she provided offense while other times she was strong at the net and defensively. Mercer was solid when she was on the court, totaling four double-digit digs matches, including a season-high 14 in the sweep of the Railsplitters. She was valuable in the regular-season finale against the Pirates and did a great job against the Bobcats in the PBC Tournament. Ogbogu was behind a talented front line during her rookie campaign, but she still saw valuable time on the court. She made the most of it with a three-block, two-kill performance in the win over Belmont Abbey. Stratton battled through injuries during the season and garnered 11 double-digit kill performances, including a season-high 17 at Flagler. She had at least eight kills 21 times. Teelon performed well during her first season with the Pacers. She established a career-high 61 assists at Flagler and posted a career-best 21 digs in the win against Montevallo on Senior Day. When Toman was moved to the libero spot, she thrived the rest of the way, rivaling the top performers nationally with nearly seven digs per set. She posted a career-high 45 in the win over the Falcons, but tallied at least 20 digs 12 times on the season. Watts saw time in nine matches on the season, making the most of her opportunities in the sweep of Mars Hill. She rattled off 10 assists in the victory while also posting seven at Georgia College. The 2015 season was definitely one that required a total-team effort en route to a 27-6 overall mark, a PBC title and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Southeast Region. With only three seniors set to graduate, Cox and the rest of the team should be primed and ready to make a run at its third straight NCAA Tournament in 2016.
