This is USC Aiken
The University of South Carolina Aiken was chartered in 1961 after entering into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. The Aiken Center opened its doors in September 1961 to 139 students. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center). In 1968, the Center underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June 1968. The campus of USC Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975, and additional land was donated that increased the campus to 144 acres. In October 1977, the Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978, and one year later, an auxiliary services building was added. An apartment complex for students, Pacer Downs, was ready

for occupancy in the fall of 1984. More construction additions to the campus included completion of the Etherredge Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building, and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974-75. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1,066 in the fall of 1975, the USC Aiken campus was permitted to plan for senior level courses and to create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In that same year, USCA received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina, and USCA was designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. In September 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and USCA became a fully
accredited senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of more than 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members, and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelor’s degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, master’s degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today USC Aiken offers students a liberal education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially. It promotes students’ interaction within a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world.

Team Preview The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s soccer team will look to take its next step this season under the guidance of secondyear head coach Hilary George. The Pacers are coming off a 4-12-1 campaign, but George now has in her first recruiting class. USC Aiken has just one senior on the team, but the rest of the squad has seen plenty of time on the pitch and the squad seemed to turn the corner near the end of 2015. FORWARD Although George lost some firepower up top from last year’s squad, she revamped the line-up and added a transfer that should give the young Pacers several student-athletes that can put the ball into the back of the net. Junior Brye Epley will take over at one of the forward positions after moving from the midfield. She had the goal in the 1-1 draw with Division I South Carolina State last year while also chipping in an assist against Clayton State for her first three points of her career. Along with Epley, junior transfer Catherine McHale should provide a lot of assistance. McHale transferred from Parkland College, where she guided the team to a pair of conference titles and was a two-time all-region honoree. Other student-athletes will look to challenge for playing time while several could find the back of the net this year. MIDFIELD This season, fans will get to see several new faces in the midfield throughout the season, but George still has a couple of mainstays from last year in the line-up. Returning are junior Sarah Moore and sophomore Kimberly Jergenson. Moore is a do-it-all student-athlete that has made a name for herself in the region. Jergenson saw time in 17 matches as a rookie, starting five times. She posted a shot in the tie at South Carolina State and was a major factor in the team’s shutout of Clayton State. New to the mix are transfers Monica Armendariz and Sarah Drury.
Armendariz also attended Parkland College, helping the team to a 15-3-1 record last year. She was a two-time first-team all-region and all-league performer. Drury spent her freshman season at Chicago State. There, she played in 18 matches, notching 16 starts. DEFENSE The back line for USC Aiken started coming together midway through the season and was a strong part the rest of the way. The group remains intact and could once again be a dominant force for the team. Seeing the majority of the minutes will be Tori Caldwell, Abby Frick, Amanda Giordano and Casey Rish. The quartet combined to play in
10
2016 USC Aiken Women’s Soccer
63 games, notching 51 starts last year. In addition to the mainstays, sophomore Kaitlyn Armstrong should vie for a lot of playing time after a productive spring campaign. GOALKEEPER Between the pipes, George has an extremely experienced standout in junior Karin Cadwalader. The third-year player started nine games as a sophomore after playing in three contests as a rookie. Cadwalader stopped a career-high five shots a pair of times last year. Additionally, she thwarted a penalty kick in the contest against Flagler.
returning home to host Armstrong State (Sept. 28). After a road match at Young Harris (Oct. 1), the squad returns home for battles against Flagler (Oct. 6) and Lander (Oct. 8). USC Aiken will travel to Francis Marion (Oct. 12), North Georgia (Oct. 15) and Clayton State (Oct. 22) before returning home for the final two regular-season matches against UNC Pembroke (Oct. 26) and Montevallo (Oct. 29).
Redshirt-sophomore will look to challenge Cadwalader in goal. The Onondaga, Mich., native, redshirted in 2014 and missed last year due to an injury. Rookie Kaelen Harper will also be in the mix between the pipes. SCHEDULE “We have another hard schedule,” George stated. “We have a very young team, but this schedule will help us learn about our chemistry before league play.” This season, USC Aiken has another daunting schedule. In addition to the ever-tough league slate, George scheduled several hard nonconference matches, including one against a Division I foe. The Pacers open the season with a trip to South Atlantic Conference member Mars Hill on Sept. 1. Two days later, the team plays at Oglethorpe before returning to North Carolina for a match at Belmont Abbey (Sept. 5). The Pacers’ fourth road date to start the season comes at Lenoir-Rhyne Sept. 10. George’s team hosts its third SAC school in five matches when it takes on Carson-Newman in a rare early afternoon contest (Sept. 12 – 1 p.m.). Two days later, the squad wraps up the quick home stand with Division I South Carolina State. USC Aiken enters league play with a road trip to Columbus State (Sept. 17), which reached the NCAA National Championship match a season ago. On Sept. 21, the squad hosts Georgia College. The Pacers hit the road for Georgia Southwestern (Sept. 24) before

The Archives 2015 Season Review The University of South Carolina Aiken women’s soccer team wrapped up its first season under the guidance of head coach Hilary George as a squad that improved greatly throughout the season. The 4-12-1 mark is not indicative of the way the team played, but in part it was due to arguably the toughest schedule in the program’s recent history. USC Aiken squared off against five of the six team’s that made the 2014 NCAA Tournament from the Southeast Region. The Pacers were loaded with nine seniors, but with the change of coaches, George brought different ideas and philosophies. The squad played six of its first eight matches on the road and nine of its first 12 matches away from the confines of Pacer Pit. The team dropped three one-goal matches and tied another that it could have won. At one point of the season, USC Aiken rattled off three wins in four outings and had several outstanding efforts on the year, including nearly the entire October slate.
action. Hannah Allison rocketed home a pair of first-half goals as the Pacers – and George – celebrated their first win of the season while George celebrated the first of her career. The squad had a tough outing at nationally-ranked Columbus State, but regrouped and rebounded with a solid effort against the Lander Bearcats. USC Aiken reeled off four excellent shots on goal, but the home team managed to sneak away with a 1-0 victory. When the calendar turned to October, things started clicking for George’s team after only a month and a half under her direction. Trailing 3-0 against a 4-1 Flagler team, Kelley found Akeyla Furbert for a score in the 71st minute. Eight minutes later, Jenna Beauregard took a corner kick and Allison headed it home, making it a 3-2 match. Despite coming up short, the Pacers proved to themselves that they were a very competitive team that could put it together.
The Pacers lost their first five matches, including three against schools that competed in last year’s NCAA Tournament. After suffering a setback to start the season, George’s team dominated the Indians of Catawba, registering 19 shots while holding the home squad to 13. However, Catawba managed to come out on top.
The team stepped out of league play for a contest against Division I South Carolina State on Oct. 9. George’s team took the lead on Brye Epley’s goal in the 50th minute of action. With four outstanding saves by Karin Cadwalader, including one in the second overtime session, the Pacers recorded a point by getting the tie. A few inches one way or another, and the balls that hit the post or crossbar by USC Aiken would have resulted in a win.
USC Aiken played well at Wingate and at Georgia College, but the squad was unable to come out with a victory. After falling behind 1-0 against Young Harris in front of the home crowd on Oct. 23, senior Hazel Kelley blasted a shot past the keeper, knotting the contest in the 20th minute of
After a trip to Newberry, George’s team stayed on the road for a Saturday-evening affair at PBC foe Montevallo. Trailing 1-0 after a goal in the 51st minute of play, Allison and Taylor Simmons created a play for Megan Smits, who blasted home the game-tying goal at the 79:56 mark. Eight

minutes later, Furbert found Emily May for the golden goal. Two matches later, the Pacers put together not only the best 90 minutes of soccer the team had played until that point, but arguably the best match during the seniors’ four seasons on the pitch. Facing Clayton State in a rare Friday night match, the Pacers dominated the outing from start to finish. In one of the smartest plays ever witnessed at Pacer Pit, Beauregard had a free kick. Instead of telling the referee she wanted the defense back 10 yards, Beauregard launched the ball past the defense and the surprised keeper for what turned out to be the game-winning score from 20 yards out 18:31 into the contest. USC Aiken continued applying pressure and the squad broke free for another tally in the 37th minute of action. Amanda Mazzie flicked it to Epley, who found Furbert for the 2-0 advantage. Nicole Cranny played all 90 minutes between the pipes and stopped four shots, including a pair from point-blank range, to preserve the shutout against the Lakers. The squad followed that victory up with its second doubleovertime affair of the season – and promptly prevailed with a 3-2 win over Georgia Southwestern.
After a scoreless first half, Furbert found Smits for a goal in the 63rd minute. The Hurricanes answered with a pair of goals, including one at the 86:28 mark. George’s team was relentless in the closing minutes and tied the match when Heaven Tylee found Smits for the score with just 78 seconds remaining in regulation. Smits connected with Furbert for the game-winning goal in the 104th minute of play from 15 yards out, pulling the team’s record to 4-5 against league foes at that point. Despite a loss at UNC Pembroke, the team trotted out for Senior Day against No. 16 North Georgia. Having lost 8-0 the season before, USC Aiken pushed the Nighthawks to the brink before falling by a 1-0 score. Beauregard, Cadwalader, Kelley, Sarah Moore, Casey Rish and Smits were all named to the PBC all-academic team for their hard work off the classroom. Although the North Georgia match marked the final contest in the careers for Allison, Beauregard, Furbert, Kelley, May, Cyndle McGuinness, Simmons, Smits, Olivia Stiltner and Tylee, the 10 seniors can understand they were part of a significant building block in the program’s history. With 13 returners on the squad, including just one senior, George will have to reload. However, the lessons learned in 2015 and the knowledge the team gained by knowing they can compete with the best in the country, will help guide the team to even more success for the 2016 season.
