Success for South Dakota student-athletes is measured on the field and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled, not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. One of the finest competition and training facilities in the region, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves South Dakota’s 350 student-athletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Now entering its ffourth year of its ttransition to NCAA D Division I, South Dakota ccontinues to achieve ssuccess. In the first three yyears of the transition, tthe Coyotes have won e eight conference titles, iincluding sweeping tthe 2011 Great West IIndoor Track and Field Championships (top C aand bottom). 2010-11 ssaw 88 South Dakota aathletes earn allcconference honors, with ttwo earning player of tthe year honors. Women’s Basketball


1. Coaching Staff: A veteran, knowledgeable coaching staff with more than three decades of collegiate experience leads the way. 2. Strength/Conditioning/Facilities: South Dakota has a full-time strength and conditioning coach along with weight room and practice facilities to help student-athletes reach their full potential. 3. Academics: The U provides the tools for student-athletes to not only prosper on the field of competition but also in the classroom. 4. Tradition: A program with five conference titles that is closing in on the 600-win milestone continues to grow.

The South Dakota women’s basketball program strives for excellence on and off the court to help Coyote student-athletes be their best.

Fourth-year South Dakota women’s basketball coach Ryun Williams is in the midst of a highly successful coaching career: --His 53 wins at USD are the second-most in school history for a coach in his/her first three seasons. --Career record of 288-170 in 16 seasons as collegiate head coach, an average of 18 wins per season. --USD is 35-9 (.795) the DakotaDome under Williams. --USD teams each earned WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll awards in Williams’ first three seasons.

The Coyote ote coaching staff features three full full-time time assistants and a graduate assistant who help Head Coach Ryun Williams, top center, in all phases of running the South Dakota women’s basketball program - from gameplanning to recruiting to travel to practice. Ryan Larsen, top left, is in his fourth year at South Dakota and has more than a decade of college coaching experience. Mandy Koupal, top right, one of the greatest players in South Dakota women’s basketball history and the program’s all-time leading scorer, is in her second year as a full-time assistant after spending two years as a graduate assistant. Brooke Atkinson, right, joins the Coyote staff with nearly 10 years of collegiate experience. The Coyotes made history in 2010-11, as they earned their first-ever postseason berth as a Division I program when they qualified for the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament. The Coyotes not only made their first postseason appearance as a Division I team -- they also earned their first-ever Division I postseason win with a 62-47 victory over Idaho at the DakotaDome on March 17, 2011, to advance to the second round of the WBI, where they faced Cal StateBakersfield.

Student-athletes, and specifically basketball, have facilities designed for them. The Coyotes have a private practice facility and hours of the weight room just to themselves. Several improvements have recently been made to the DakotaDome, including a new videoboard.

South Dakota’s Athletic Academic Service’s mission is to provide student-athletes with the support necessary to reach their full academic potential. The university provides each student-athlete with a full-time Athletic Academic Advisor who coordinates the following and more for each of their assignees: Academic enhancement in the classroom Assistance with class scheduling and major selection Connections with faculty to track academic progress Arrangement of tutors and study assistance Access to supplemental instruction Monitoring of class attendance Coordination of the Coyote Athletic Study Center Academic Orientation Class Promotion of student-athlete academic success

an emphasis on academics, and the efforts of the student-athletes are evident: --South Dakota was named to Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll in both 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. --The Coyote women finished with a team GPA of 3.311 in 2008-09, a GPA of 3.381 in 2009-10 and a GPA of 3.390 in 2010-11. --Had 18 student-athletes earn Great West Academic All-Conference honors over past two seasons.

The Summit League is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2011-12, and the 10-team league is as strong as ever. League members include South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Western Illinois, Oral Roberts, Southern Utah, Oral Roberts, Missouri-Kansas City, Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne and Indiana UniversityPurdue University-Indianapolis.

The Ultimate Goal - Graduation Student-athletes at South Dakota are students first -- and their ultimate goal is to obtain their degree when they complete their time at the university. It’s an emphasis starting from the university’s administration that carries down to the Coyote coaching staff.
