The University of South Dakota Dakota offers 132 undergraduate programs and 65 graduate programs. students passed through the halls of the University of South Dakota in 2011, including more than 7,400 undergraduates and nearly 2,500 graduates. More than 80 percent of the school’s 423 faculty members have the highest degree in their field, but a 15:1 student-faculty ratio gives a great education a personal touch. The renowned and driven students make USD the premier higher education institution in the state.

We aren’t the only ones to feel that way about USD. South Dakota once again has been recognized among the nation’s best institutions for undergraduate education, according to The Princeton Review and its 2012 “Best Colleges” issue. The University of South Dakota is the only institution from the state named to this year’s prestigious list.

manufacturers, professionals and scholars call Vermillion home. Downtown restaurants, movie theaters, cafes and specialty shops are all within walking distance of the campus. Fishing, kayaking and boating are available on the majestic Missouri River (top). Vermillion is also home to a scenic 18-hole golf course and numerous parks, where you can do anything from play frisbee golf to play soccer. And if you’re up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls or Sioux City in less than an hour, Omaha in about two and Minneapolis and Kansas City in five.

Success for South Dakota student-athletes is measured on the field and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled, not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. Below are some outstanding accomplishments:

One of the finest competition and training facilities in the region, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves South Dakota’s 350 student-athletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Coyote student-athletes enjoy giving back to the community, whether it is working on projects in the region through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), or volunteering -- such as helping with move-in day (top right), being involved in Girls on the Run (bottom left) or helping to clean up Prentis Park (bottom right).

With the transition to Division I now completed, South Dakota has had plenty of success, including in the Summit League. The Coyote women(top, left ) qualified for the WNIT to earn their second straight postseason trip. In the first four years of the transition, won eight conference titles. The 2011-12 athletic season saw 68 South Dakota athletes earn all-conference honors.

A faithful following of fans always support South Dakota student-athletes. Coyote Nation loves its studentathletes and wears the red and white proudly at all home events. Their die-hard enthusiasm help make gameday a memorable experience for everyone involved.

South Dakota passion makes gameday on campus one of the best days in Vermillion. Everyone gets involved from the color guard to the dance squad and cheerleaders to the school band. Even the baton twirler catches the USD spirit.

Student-athletes at South Dakota are given support in all areas of their college experience. Coyote staff members trained in academic support, strength training, sports medicine and more work on a oneon-one basis with each student-athlete.

Huber (right) bring a wealth of experience to the Coyotes. In nearly 50 combined years of coaching at USD, the two have guided more than 330 Coyotes to All-America honors and have earned numerous coach of the year accolades along the way.

Gottsleben and Huber have surrounded themselves with a top-flight coaching staff for the field events also. Derek Miles (top) was a four-time All-American pole vaulter for USD and is a threetime Olympic qualifier, including advancing to the Summer Games in London in 2012. Throwing coach Tyler Custis (middle) competed in the Big 12 Conference as a student-athlete at Texas A&M, while graduate assistant coach Ben Jasinski (below) was a twotime Summit League champion in the high jump and set two school records during his collegiate career.

Fitzsimmons set the school record in the steeplechase, which stood until 2000, and Hoyt was an eight-time All-American between track and cross country and was inducted into the Coyote Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

Coyote cross country has its own home as well in the Don Baker Cross Country Course. Located just across the street from the DakotaDome, the tree-filled 10 acres has a permanently-marked course that gives USD an area to train and host meets on.

The Coyotes enjoy a home track advantage with one of the top indoor facilities in the nation. A spacious, eight-lane, 200-meter track is flanked with two runways for jumps and a top-of-the-line throw and pole vault area. USD also hosts outdoor meets at Williams Field in Yankton, a multi-million dollar Mondo facility.

The Coyotes have been dominant as a team at the conference and national level for more than 85 years, including capturing a men’s cross country national title in 1997. USD has captured 46 conference titles in the North Central and Great West, including a rare triple crown by the Coyote women in 2005 and 2006. The Coyotes have amassed an impressive 18 individual national titles and 425 AllAmerican awards.

2012-13 Coyote Athletics
In 2012, South Dakota sent three individuals to the finals of the NCAA National Championships. Sophomore Bethany Buell, left, took third, in the pole vault while freshman Emily Grove was seventh in the pole vault. Both were first-team All-Americans. Junior Alexa Duling, right, was 12th in the 400-meter hurdles and was second-team All-American. The trio combined to score eight points at the national meet, helping the Coyotes to finish in a tie for 34th in the nation.

The Coyotes capped a highly-successful 2012 campaign by sending a Summit League-best 13 athletes to the first round of the NCAA National Championships in Austin, Texas, in May. South Dakota also recorded 14 Summit League titles at the indoor and outdoor championships.

The top 16 individuals in each event qualify for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are set for March 8 and 9, 2013 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Competition on the road prepares USD athletes for competing on the national stage, as the Coyotes regularly travel to some of the best meets in the nation. USD has traveled to: Des Moines, Iowa for the nationallyrecognized Drake Relays. One of the top collegiate meets in the country, the Coyotes annually travel to the event and face some of the best athletes in the nation (top). Phoenix, Arizona, to take advantage of a early-season warm weather. Los Angeles, California, for the prestigious Mount SAC Relays. Lawrence, Kansas, for the Kansas Relays (middle). Austin, Texas, for the nationally-recognized Texas Relays. Palo Alto, Calif., home of the Stanford Relays.

Academics is a huge focus for South Dakota student-athletes, and track and field and cross country are a perfect example. The Coyote men’s and women’s cross country teams placed a combined 21 athletes on the Academic All-Summit League team, while the track and field programs combined for 56 academic allconference selections. Collectively, South Dakota cross country and track and field athletes combined for a 3.395 GPA in 2001-12 and also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic team honors.
