Downtown restaurants, movie theaters, cafes and specialty shops are all within walking distance of the campus. But if you’re up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls or Sioux City in less than an hour, Omaha in about two and Minneapolis in five.

Success for USD
student-athletes is measured on the field and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. One of the finest competition and training facilities
in the region, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves USD’s 350 studentathletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Student-athletes at
South Dakota are given support in all areas of their college experience. Coyote staff members trained in academic support, strength training, sports medicine and more work on a oneon-one basis with each student-athlete.

In its third year of
transition to NCAA Division I status, South Dakota is a member of the up-and-coming Great West Conference. USD captured four team championships in the 10-member league during the 2009-10 season. The Coyotes also added 142 All-GWC honors in all sports, including four players of the year and three coaches of the year.

The USD swimming and diving teams made quite a splash in their first year of competition in the Summit League, as the results indicate: --The USD women placed 3rd, while the men placed 5th at the Summit League Championships in Feb. 2010. --Sophomore Elizabeth Hoffman (right) became USD’s first individual Summit League Champion by winning the 200 freestyle. --USD earned a total of 22 All-Summit League honors, with 10 different Coyotes being named All-Summit League.

Swimming Success - Competition A look at the success for the USD swimming and diving teams under Coach Jason Mahowald (left): --Jill Smolczyk, pictured below, won the 2008 NCAA II 1-meter diving championship and named the NCAA II Women’s Diver of the Year. She also was a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year honors in 2008.
--USD swimmers and divers recorded 29 All-American performances (2005-08) --USD women finished 8th at the 2006 NCAA II National Meet, tying the best finish in school history. That finish was the first of three straight top 10 finishes at the national meet for the Coyote women.

The Coyotes have not only succeeded in competition under Mahowald and Assistant Coach Anthony Harris (left), but also have thrived in the classroom: --Two USD swimmers earned postgraduate scholarships in 2008 (Jill Smolczyk and Emilie Kluth, right) --25 Coyote swimmers and divers were named to the Summit League Commissioner’s List in 2010, while 34 were named Summit League AllAcademic. USD’s men’s team earned a Summit League Team Achievement Award in 2010 as well. --USD men and women’s teams named CSCCA Scholar All-American Teams in 2008 and 2009. --USD swimmers and divers have earned numerous Academic All-America honors during Mahowald’s tenure.
