Over 80 percent of USD’s 408 faculty members have the highest degree in their field, but a 15:1 student-faculty ratio gives a great education a personal touch. But if you’re up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls or Sioux City in less than an hour, Omaha in about two and Minneapolis in five.

student-athletes is measured on the field and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. One of the finest competition and training facilities
in the nation, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves USD’s 350 studentathletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Student-athletes at
South Dakota are given support in all areas of their college experience. Coyote staff members trained in academic support, strength training, sports medicine and more work on a oneon-one basis with each student-athlete.

USD has won more
than 85 team titles at the conference level. The Coyotes dominated the North Central Conference (top) in NCAA Division II for many decades until moving to NCAA Division I in 2008. A different conference meant the same results in the Great West (middle), with South Dakota earning multiple conference crowns and accolades. The Coyotes now set their sights on the Summit League to continue their history of success.

Huber (right) bring a wealth of experience to the Coyotes. In 44 combined years of coaching at USD, the two have guided more than 330 Coyotes to AllAmerica honors and have earned numerous accolades along the way. Both have been named the GWC Indoor Coach of the Year the past two seasons.

surrounded themselves with a top-notch coaching staff for the field events also. Derek Miles (top) was an All-American pole vaulter for USD before going on to qualify for the last two Olympics. Inger Appanaitis (middle) was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA Championships and holds Nevada’s school record in the javelin, while also qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. Jeff Seagren (bottom) earned 11 All-NCC honors as a stand-out decathlete at USD under Gottsleben. Volunteer Assistants Tyler Custis and Derek Gearman round out the coaching staff after having competed in the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences as student-athletes.

One of the top collegiate meets in the country, the Coyotes annually travel to the event and face some of the best athletes in the nation (top). n Phoenix, Arizona for an early-season meet to allow USD track athletes to compete in warmer than usual weather. USD’s 350 student-athletes posted a collective
grade-point average of 3.16 at the conclusion of the 2009 spring semester. Of USD’s 17 NCAA sports, 14 had a team GPA greater than 3.0 at the conclusion of 2008-09. The Coyotes have been dominant as a team at the conference and national level for more than 85 years.
USD has captured 44 conference titles in the North Central and Great West, including a rare triple crown by the Coyote women in 2005 and 2006. USD has notched 43 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Division II Championships, including 30 in track and field. USD men’s cross country won a national team title in 1997.

Emma Erickson (right) was the last Coyote to compete in the NCAA postseason at the Division II Outdoor Championships in 2008, but USD can add to that list this spring. The preliminary round of the NCAA Championships will take place in Eugene on May 2628 at the historic Hayward Field, while the finals will be contested at Drake Stadium (left) in Des Moines on June 8-11.
