A total of 9,617 students passed through the halls of USD in 2009, including more than 7,000 undergraduates and 2,500 graduates. Over 80 percent of USD’s 408 faculty members have the highest degree in their field, but a 15:1 student-faculty ratio gives a great education a personal touch. Downtown restaurants, movie theaters, cafes and specialty shops are all within walking distance of the campus. But if you’re up for a road trip, you can make Sioux Falls or Sioux City in less than an hour, Omaha in about two and Minneapolis in five.

Success for USD student-athletes is measured on the field and in the classroom. The Coyotes have excelled not only at the conference level, but also on a national scale and as professionals. One of the finest competition and training facilities in the region, the DakotaDome is home to all 17 Coyote teams. The complex serves USD’s 350 studentathletes on a daily basis and is one of the state’s most recognizable man-made landmarks.

Student-athletes at South Dakota are given support in all areas of their college experience. Coyote staff members trained in academic support, strength training, sports medicine and more work on a oneon-one basis with each student-athlete.

In its third year of ttransition to NCAA Division I status, South Dakota is a member o of the up-and-coming G Great West Conference. USD captured four team cchampionships in the 10-member league d during the 2009-10 sseason. The Coyotes aalso added 142 All-GWC honors in all sports, including four players o of the year and three ccoaches of the year.

Coyote Volleyball - Growing in Division I Part of the USD volleyball team’s transition to Division I has included an enhanced schedule. The Coyotes played at major conference venues such as Wisconsin (below) and Kansas State last as part of a challenging 2009 campaign. USD has faced major conference foes Duke, Wisconsin, Providence and Marquette over the past two seasons, along with several highly competitive matches against quality mid-major opponents.

Coyote Volleyball - Growing in Division I
USD is 36-21 under Houk. The 36 wins are tied for the most in a coach’s first two seasons in USD history. USD is 15-5 at the DakotaDome over the past two seasons. The Coyotes placed second at the Drake Invitational (2009) with a 3-1 record, losing only by a tiebreaker. The Coyotes had two players on the All-Great West Conference second team, plus the Newcomer of the Year, in 2009. USD’s Jenna Hatfield also earned all-tournament honors.

USD has enjoyed successes during its first two years of transitioning to Division I status under Coach Matt Houk (right). USD opened 2008 -- its first year of the Division -- with four straight wins over Division I competition, on its way to a 23-4 mark.
