Fishing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park will garner you one of two things: a whopper of a fish or a whopper of a fish story! Either way, you’re in for a rewarding experience. These basic tips will help get you started, but you can find a complete list of fishing. regulations at nps.gov/grsm or tn.gov/twra. • Fishing is permitted year round in the Smokies from

30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. • Know your fish. Possession of brook trout, also known

Preserving Our Mountain Environment Both Pigeon Forge residents and visitors are passionate about the natural beauty of the Smoky Mountains. We do our best to preserve that beauty to ensure that it’s here for the enjoyment of future generations.

Recycling You’ll notice the absence of curbside recycling bins in Pigeon Forge. That’s because Sevier County has one of the few composting facilities worldwide that manages the separation process. More than 60 percent of all waste in county trashcans is composted, and this state-of-the-art facility produces compost for resale from our waste stream while cutting landfill consumption.

Winterfest Lights From early November through the end of February, more than five million sparkling lights draw visitors to Pigeon Forge Winterfest. In an effort to conserve energy, Pigeon Forge uses LED lights in the city’s Winterfest light displays. As a result, the displays shine brighter, last longer and use less energy than traditional outdoor lighting.

Green Parking Pigeon Forge’s 1,600-space Municipal Parking lot, located on Teaster Lane, was the first “green” parking lot in Tennessee. Because the lot is built with permeable pavement, rainwater soaks through to the ground, which prevents runoff. The benefit to you is that by parking in the lot and riding the Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys, you’ll save fuel and enjoy a comfortable ride to more than 200 stops throughout town. The parking lot also allows direct access to the greenway trail Riverwalk.

Saluting America’s Heroes RED, WHITE AND BLUE RUN DEEP IN PIGEON FORGE, AND WE TEND TO WEAR OUR PATRIOTISM ON OUR SLEEVES. That’s why it’s important to this Smoky Mountain town to pay tribute to the men and women who selflessly serve our country. During the month of August, Celebrate Freedom discounts are available at participating businesses all over town, including restaurants, hotels, theaters and attractions. These discounts are for active military, National Guard, reservists, veterans, police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel. In addition to Celebrate Freedom discounts during August, a number of local businesses have special offers for members of the military year round.

History Of Pigeon Forge Today, Pigeon Forge is a popular playground for vacationing families, but once it was a valley of golden wheat fields and lush farmlands with the Great Smoky Mountains as a backdrop. The town takes the first part of its name from the Little Pigeon River, and the river takes its name from passenger pigeons. These birds, now extinct, once were so numerous that they darkened the sky as they flew into the valley. The beech trees along the river were stripped of limbs by the weight of their great numbers. The second part of the name came from the bloomery forge built by Isaac Love in 1817, on a site near the present Old Mill. Mordecai Lewis, a Pigeon Forge pioneer, received a 151-acre land grant at the site of the present Old Mill in 1810. Lewis’ property sold to Isaac Love, and Isaac’s son William and his brothers built the now historic Old Mill in 1830. The first white settlers to come into the Pigeon Forge area likely were traders who followed the trail of the Great Indian Path from Virginia to the center of the Cherokee Nation. Col. Samuel Wear, a Virginia soldier of the Revolution, settled here around 1781. Wear’s Fort, near the north end of present day Pigeon Forge by Wears Valley Road, was a refuge during Indian raids.

PIGEON FORGE HISTORY

In the early 1900s, Pigeon Forge’s developmental years, a hub of businesses clustered around The Old Mill. There was a bottling plant, a cannery and a blacksmith shop, as well as thriving country stores and a farmers’ supply enterprise. In the 1920s, the Pigeon River Railroad operated here as an extension of the Knoxville, Sevierville and Eastern line. During the decade that ended in 1930, The Old Mill generated electricity for the town. In the 1950s, a modern highway opened through town. Rental cottages and cabins were opening by the river, and small cafés were servicing travelers on their way to the mountains during the few months of the summer travel season. Before the tourism explosion, there were still fields of green along the Parkway. As development progressed, residents chose to incorporate and control their own development destiny. On April 4, 1961, Pigeon Forge became a city. The towering peaks of Mt. LeConte still dominate the southern horizon of Pigeon Forge. Although the lofty mountains have changed little since the early Native Americans followed the river paths, Pigeon Forge has been the exact opposite. Changes in this city have made the town an entirely different place than the residents knew. Today’s travelers experience the excitement of the modern Pigeon Forge still with the familiar backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Travel Tips THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO While in Pigeon Forge, you’ll find that some of the best tips and advice comes from the folks who live here. So, don’t be shy about asking us questions. We love telling visitors about our hometown. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when planning your trip.

Traffic Tips Pigeon Forge is the site of a number of car shows and parades throughout the year. We always expect large turnouts for these events, and you should, too. You will experience traffic delays during these activities, so we suggest that you note the dates of these events and plan your visit accordingly. All events are subject to rescheduling or cancellation. Please confirm with the Department of Tourism at 1-800-251-9100. For a list of special events, starting on page 20. Construction on Highway 66, from Interstate 40 to Pigeon Forge will be completed by late 2014. This extensive project widens the highway from four to six lanes, adds sidewalks and other enhanced safety features.

Time Zone Pigeon Forge is located in the Eastern Time Zone. Tennessee changes to Daylight Saving Time on the second Sunday in March and reverts to Eastern Standard Time the first Sunday in November.

Frequently Asked Questions Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the weather like in Pigeon Forge? The climate in Pigeon Forge is close to perfect. Summer days are warm, with average daytime temperatures around 85 degrees. Winter is moderately cold, with average temperatures of 40 degrees. Casual attire is encouraged for almost all activities. Light clothing for summer and layers for winter work well. Take a jacket if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re heading to the mountains. Even during the summer months, temperatures at higher elevations tend to be cooler.

Can I get cell phone service in the national park? Cell phone signals are readily available in Pigeon Forge but can be difficult to find in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Do restaurants and/or stores sell alcohol? Beer may be purchased in Pigeon Forge at several locations, including convenience markets and grocery stores. Some Pigeon Forge restaurants sell alcoholic beverages by the drink to patrons, and these establishments are noted in the restaurant listings starting on page 100. Hours of sales may vary. Wine also may be purchased at the Mountain Valley Winery. Retail liquor sales are not available in Pigeon Forge.

Can I drive my golf cart on the streets of Pigeon Forge? Usage of a traditional golf cart, defined as a motor vehicle designed for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour, is not allowed on public streets. A golf cart that is designed for on-road use or one that is modified to meet requirements of the low- or medium-speed vehicle and is registered as such, are allowed to operate on streets where the posted speed limit is 35 mph or less.

Generally, Tennessee recognizes handgun carry permits issued by any state; however, to lawfully carry a handgun in Tennessee based upon a permit or license issued in another state, you must be in possession of the permit or license anytime you carry the gun in this state. Even though you have a permit and are authorized to possess or carry a firearm, there are restrictions as to where firearms may be carried. That information can be found at
