I can say that with great confidence because my family has been here for generations, dating back to one of the area’s first settlers. Even then, my ancestors knew there was something special about this place. Today, Pigeon Forge has dozens of ways to entertain all ages, making it the ideal destination for your next vacation or family getaway. The fun never stops in Pigeon Forge, and we have a lot to look forward to in 2012, including the Wild Eagle™ at Dollywood. The year marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic , and the museum here in Pigeon Forge has some spectacular activities scheduled to commemorate the event. Travel Tips What to Know Before You Go When you vacation in Pigeon Forge, some of the best tips and advice come from our own residents. So don’t be shy—ask us questions! You may hear Smoky Mountain legends or learn a few hidden secrets about our friendly town. Here are a few basic tips you might want to know before you visit.

Getting in Touch Our area code is 865. We also list a variety of toll-free calling options. These include 800, 855, 866, 877 and 888 phone numbers.

Internet Access Many of our accommodations and restaurants offer free wireless Internet access, so you can log on to the Web from a variety of places in town. Look for the symbol when browsing through our business listings.

Length of Stay There’s so much to experience here, you should plan to stay an entire week or come back to see us later this year.

Cell Phone Service Cell phone signals are readily available in Pigeon Forge but may be difficult to find in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Alcoholic Beverage Status Beer may be purchased in Pigeon Forge at several locations, including convenience markets and grocery stores. Many Pigeon Forge restaurants also sell beer and wine. Hours of sales vary. Wine also may be purchased at the Mountain Valley Winery. Retail liquor sales and liquor by the drink are not available in Pigeon Forge.

Climate and Clothing The climate in Pigeon Forge is close to perfect. Summer days are warm, with an average temperature of 84 degrees. Winter is moderately cold, with an average temperature of 40 degrees. The atmosphere here lends itself to casual attire for almost all activities. Light clothing for summer and layers for winter work well. Take a jacket if you’re heading to the mountains. The temperatures are cooler at higher elevations, even in summer months.

Timeshare Sales During your visit to Pigeon Forge, you may meet timeshare salespeople connected with resorts, hotels or other destinations. Some may even tell you they are associated with the City of Pigeon Forge—they are not. You may be offered a complimentary meal, a short weekend trip or other free items to participate in a timeshare presentation. The City of Pigeon Forge does not endorse these timeshare businesses.

Seat Belt Laws Tennessee’s mandatory seat belt law requires all vehicle passengers to wear seat belts. The state also has a mandatory child-restraint law that requires children (infant to 12 years of age) be secured in a child safety seat and/or in the back seat of the vehicle.

Tennessee Non-Smokers Protection Act Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed public places within the state of Tennessee. With a few exceptions, the smoking ban applies but is not limited to: • Restaurants • Hotels and motels • Retail stores and shopping malls • Sports arenas, including enclosed public areas in outdoor arenas • Restrooms, lobbies, reception areas, hallways and other common-use areas • Healthcare facilities

Time Zone Pigeon Forge is located in the Eastern Time Zone. Tennessee changes to Daylight Saving Time on the second Sunday in March and reverts to Eastern Standard Time the first Sunday in November.

Traffic Tips When there’s a car show or parade in Pigeon Forge, we always expect a big turnout, and you should, too! Along with the festivities, you will experience traffic delays. Most guests just sit back and enjoy the show. However, we suggest you note the dates of these events on our calendar. Road construction and sheer volume can also cause traffic delays both entering and departing Pigeon Forge. You may want to consider an early morning or late afternoon departure time to avoid delays when leaving town. All special events are subject to rescheduling or cancellation. Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys

The Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys are the easiest and most affordable way to get around town. Almost everything in town is located along our six-lane, five-mile Parkway. Leave your car behind and, for a modest fare, visit more than 100 stops throughout the city. Most trolleys are equipped to accommodate passengers in wheelchairs. In November, December and January, during our Winterfest celebration, our trolleys are decorated to brighten up the town as they offer the Trolley Tour of Lights. A special guide will share tales of Pigeon Forge as you tour the Winterfest light displays that are the hallmark of our award-winning winter festival.

Welcome Center Visitor Information Center

You will notice a number of welcome centers in Pigeon Forge. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s because we love helping our guests and answering any questions they may have. However, there are only two official, city-operated welcome centers, which are designed to make your vacation enjoyable from the moment you arrive.

The Pigeon Forge Welcome Center, 1950 Parkway, is located at traffic light #0. The Visitor Information Center, 3107 Parkway, is located at traffic light #5.

Airport Information Knoxvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s McGhee Tyson Airport is 47 miles from Pigeon Forge. For more information, visit tys.org or call 865-342-3000. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge Airport is located in Sevierville, just seven miles from Pigeon Forge, and has complete airport facilities for general and corporate aviation.

City Services

In addition to attractions, theaters and restaurants, Pigeon Forge also is home to some outstanding recreational facilities. The Pigeon Forge Community Center features a large gymnasium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a bowling center, racquetball courts and a fitness center located at 170 Community Center Drive. Patriot Park is encircled by a half-mile paved and lighted walking trail. It has picnic areas along the river, a covered picnic pavilion and a gazebo for special functions. Located at 186 Old Mill Avenue. A new city park will feature fields for baseball, sof tball and football, tennis courts and a wooded area complete with trails and interpretive sites. Opening late 2012 Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find a number of paved, well-lit trails throughout Pigeon Forge, designed for pedestrian and bicycle use. These trails are a perfect way to relax and enjoy our community. Each access can be found through the Municipal Parking Facility. In 2013, we will unveil our new event center, the perfect place for large events. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find information about this exciting addition to Pigeon Forge on page 90.

History

of Pigeon Forge

The earliest recorded history of what is now known as Pigeon Forge was when the Cherokee and other Eastern tribes of American Indians used the area for hunting grounds. The first white settlers began arriving near the end of the Revolutionary War, around 1781. By the early 1800s, two mills had been built along the Little Pigeon River, and self-sustaining life in the small community was underway. By 1820, Isaac Love had established and operated a furnace and iron forge near one of these mills. In fact, the name Pigeon Forge is a combination of the iron works and the river that flows through town. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the riverbanks were lined with beech trees. The river’s name is from the now-extinct passenger pigeons that fed on the beechnuts. A landmark sale of a small piece of property in 1946 resulted in an old tobacco barn becoming the Pigeon Forge Pottery, the city’s first tourism-related business. A major turning point in the city’s quest for a flourishing tourism industry came in 1986, when country music superstar Dolly Parton applied her name to Dollywood®, a theme park on the site of the former Silver Dollar City attraction. When the pieces of Pigeon Forge history come together, a picture of a highly successful business community is revealed, one that the city’s founding fathers could only have imagined. Pigeon Forge celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. Smoky Mountain Opry The newest show in the Smokies (formerly Miracle Theater) features your favorite country tunes performed by highly talented singers, musicians and dancers.

The Tomb The mysteries of an ancient Egyptian tomb wait for you at this interactive attraction at Walden’s Landing. Getting in is a breeze, but finding your way out can be a challenge. Watch out for the spirit of the Pharaoh!

Pigeon River Crossings Pigeon River Crossings, formerly Belz Outlet Mall, is the newest shopping destination in Pigeon Forge. Check out dozens of stores and a great selection of merchandise for the entire family.

Stages West Stages West, a favorite shopping spot for cowboys and cowgirls, will have an additional 3,000 square feet of shopping space by summer 2012.

Salute to Veterans Parade Join us as we honor the men and women of America’s military. This annual parade will take place in early November, on the same day as the kickoff festivities for Pigeon Forge Winterfest. It’s destined to be a day of tributes and celebrations.

What’s new

Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center See replicas of your favorite movie sets and the stars that made them famous inside the Hollywood Wax Museum. Located on the Parkway, this building will grab your attention with its colorful exterior. One ticket price actually includes three attractions: Hollywood Wax Museum, Castle of Chaos and Hannah’s Maze of Mirrors.

French’s Shoes & Boots Located on the Pigeon Forge Parkway, French’s Shoes & Boots carries the latest styles for men, women and children from a variety of boot makers.

100th Anniversary of Titanic Titanic ™ Museum Attraction will host special events throughout 2012 to honor those who were onboard the luxury liner when she sank 100 years ago. Expect a “royal wedding” at the Grand Staircase and an Irish cruise trip giveaway.

Memories Theatre Memories Theatre has been presenting the best in musical entertainment for more than 20 years, and now Elvis and the legends of music have a new home at 140 Showplace Boulevard in Pigeon Forge.

With more than 800 miles of maintained hiking trails, it’s the perfect place for a short walk or a more strenuous journey that requires backcountry camping. There’s more to the Smokies than just hiking, though. Camping, picnicking, horseback riding, fishing, bicycling, wildlife viewing and simply driving through some of nature’s most beautiful landscapes are options for the millions of people who come to America’s most visited national park year after year.

Fishing is a favorite activity for those visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but you need to know that a valid Tennessee fishing license is required. Here are a few basic tips to get you started. For a complete list of fishing regulations visit nps.gov/grsm and tn.gov/twra. • Fishing is permitted year round in the Smokies from one-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunset. • Know your fish—possession of brook trout, also known as brookie, is prohibited. • A combination of five rainbow and brown trout per day (minimum 7 inches) is the limit. • Only artificial lures and flies may be used, and only one handheld rod is permitted.

When you visit Pigeon Forge, please don’t litter, pick up trash when you see it and help us keep Tennessee beautiful.

Recycling While most public recycling systems take place curbside, you’ll notice the absence of recycling bins here in Pigeon Forge. That’s because Sevier County has one of only 11 composting facilities worldwide that manages the separation process. More than 60 percent of all waste in county trash cans is composted, and this state-of-the-art facility produces compost for resale from our waste stream and cuts landfill consumption.

Winterfest Lights Beginning in early November and continuing through the end of February, more than five million sparking lights welcome visitors to Pigeon Forge Winterfest. In order to become more energy efficient, Pigeon Forge uses LED lights in the city’s Winterfest displays. The signature displays shine brighter, last longer and use less energy than traditional outdoor lighting.

Green Parking Pigeon Forge’s 1,500-space Municipal Parking lot, located on Teaster Lane, is the first “green” parking lot in the state of Tennessee. The lot is built with permeable pavement, allowing rainwater to soak through to the ground and preventing runoff. You can save fuel by parking in the lot and riding the Pigeon Forge Fun Time Trolleys to destinations throughout the city. The parking lot also allows direct access to the Greenway trails.

Pigeon Forge Greenways Pigeon Forge has established a series of trails for pedestrian and bicycle use. Residents and visitors can enjoy our community while strolling or riding along wide, paved, well-lit trails that wind through Pigeon Forge. You’ll also find established walking paths in and around Patriot Park.
