Karols Korner
Spring has sprung, March madness is here and Mothers Day is around the corner. What are you doing for Mothers Day? This months issue, is all about supporting your local businesses and tradesmen, why should we?, how can we? What if it costs more and so on! Think of the saving to the environment when you shop locally, think of shop owners doing a happy dance, think of little girls at ballet lessons with the local ballet teacher, who in turn can then pay for her child to go to piano lessons to the little old lady in the street that used to be a pianist with an orchestra. She shops at her local Coop round the corner and her money means the Coop needs to employ an extra part timer working in the shop. The new employee then spends his money at the local vet and pet shop on his beloved pooch! See how spending locally makes our area vibrant and how the same few pounds can be spent and respent to make our area richer and improve our lives. So its a double win if you take mum to a local independent restaurant for Mothers day, mums happy and business owners are happy! Talking of pooches, I’m on the countdown to Crufts, its only 3 weeks away now! And poodles are being prepped and pampered and preened for the most prestigious dog show in the world. Readers, if you are visiting Crufts on the Sunday,PLEASE come find me in Hall 2, I will be probably the frazzled lady with the red miniature poodles. I would love your support! And if you aren't visiting, get on FB and send some support that way. Our fb page is Use Locally Newark & Lincs

SHOP LOCAL, BUY LOCAL, LIVE LOCAL! I’m so fed up of hearing about how businesses are going into liquidation these days, HMV have just been bought out and Debenhams were recently in trouble. No sector is immune, Patisserie Valerie with cakes and pastries to die for, are one of a number of them and who remembers Woolworths and Blockbuster? Is it a sign of the times? Are we all either so busy that we no longer want to walk around the shops and prefer to shop online as we are constantly being told? Well, I dispute that! I accept it
has become very easy to surf the internet and press click to purchase from my armchair, but I still love the feeling of walking round a town centre and enjoying its uniqueness and atmosphere. Shopping is an experience and somehow it’s become a chore when I go online. Shopping in your local town makes such a difference to the entire area. The £50 I spend in the dress shop, makes a business owner do a happy dance!, they then go out and respend that £50 in a local restaurant,

The farmer’s wife then buys her sons school uniform from the local uniform supplier, and in turn they then pop to the deli for lunch. And on it goes! That £50 has been spent and respent in our local economy and enables our local businesses to thrive, ultimately meaning

great is it when someone appreciates something we have done! And if your service has been less than you hoped for tell them, give them the opportunity to make it right, it matters to us small business owners that we do a great job! I popped into Dee Dee Thai the other day, there’s always a warm welcome from Jee and his wife, and lovely food, which they cook themselves from recipes passed down in the family. It’s a rich history and by eating there rather than Kentucky or MacDonalds, I’m making Newark a more prosperous town. Café 17 is another family run business, headed by Jodie Brampton who is a trained cook and says her signature dish is her breakfasts. Jodie also provides pre booked afternoon tea and meets all dietary needs, gluten and vegan free. (Cafe 17 has been awarded the Healthy options merit.) Jodie also makes homemade cakes to order and offers outside catering using her converted horsebox into a catering unit and provides hog roasts too, BBQ’s and buffets. Jodie has vast experience in catering for weddings, christening and events such as Glastonbury, firework displays, Halloween and light switch on’s. Totally Locally of making Chicken and burgers into quick but delicious, real food! They have some fabulous £5 Lunch offers at the moment and some great reviews on fb. Try them and let us know how it went. And one of my favourite shops in Newark is Newark Paint and Hardware. Now that may sound weird, but as a not very savvy female, all matters DIY are Double Dutch to me, however when I need something I know I can get great advice from Jon and can go back to him at each stage for the next thing. Painting and decorating has never been such fun! And revamping old furniture is almost a hobby now! Newark has so much to offer….. great service, a wide variety of different shops, fabulous restaurants, all giving us a town to be proud of. Let’s make sure we keep supporting our local businesses. Each one of the businesses featured in this 10 page section, are independently owned, local business. By supporting them, and buying from them, you are really in fact supporting yourself, your children, and your home town. Make sure your Mother’s Day meal, is taken at a local independently owned restaurant such as Dee Dee Thai, (mums eat free), Café 17 or Flame Ingo Grillhouse. Karol Watson Todd

Probate What needs to happen when someone dies Written by Honey Group When someone dies it is hard enough to deal with the emotional aspects of grief, without the added complications of sorting the legal and financial affairs. Most people assume that it will be simple and everything will be straightforward especially if they are married. Quite often though the person that you expect to deal with your estate will be the very person that is least likely to be in a position to think clearly and understand the importance of the documentation to be completed due to the emotion and practical upheaval of losing a loved one. Administering someone’s estate imposes the following duties and responsibilities. • Draft and prepare the probate papers and submit to the Probate Registry. • Complete the relevant Inland Revenue forms and calculate any inheritance tax payable. • Arrange for the payment of any inheritance tax by liaising with the beneficiaries/banks. • Place the relevant Trustees Act Notices to require any claimants to come forward. • Identify any life or minority interests. • Set up and manage any Trusts created by the Will. • Ensure that all legal procedures are adhered to, which will enable the estate to be administered correctly. • Contact all financial institutions, government bodies and other interested parties, and obtain details of all assets and liabilities of the estate.
• Arrange any necessary formal valuations of any assets, e.g. House, jewellery, company. • Establish whether there are any joint assets and liaise with the joint holder about the transfer. • Arrange the sale of the assets, cashing in and closing of accounts. • Complete and submit any necessary income tax returns both for the period to death and during administration period. • Obtain clearance from HM Revenue and Customs. • Prepare a final income tax return prior to distribution of the estate. • Calculate whether there is any income tax or capital gains tax payable and arrange payment with HM Revenue and Customs.
• Collect in all the assets of the estate. • Pay all liabilities of the estate having regard to the correct statutory provisions. • Prepare estate accounts and obtain approval. • Distribute the proceeds of the estate. Here at Honey Legal we provide a professional friendly service to your relatives at a time when they need it the most. We can guide them through the legal and financial jargon, making the process as smooth as it can be in the circumstances. We have legal professionals who are specialist in their field. With the average Solicitor or Bank charging in the region of 5% of your estate, our competitive prices start at 1.95% of the gross estate value, plus VAT, Fees and disbursements.

A Day in Heaven at Ragdale Hall Spa
Relaxation for my body soul and spirit On a chilly January morning, 4 of us braved the forecasts of snow to meet up for a girly day at Ragdale Hall Spa. Tired and jaded after a Christmas with family, I was in serious need of rejuvenation. And this is definitely the way to do it.

to me, they are both happy in their work and a terrific standard of work, it all adds to the feeling of being very well looked after. A quick check on which classes were on offer that day, before starting in the thermal spa, to enjoy the scents of rose and jasmine and the sauna and steam rooms there, before indulging in a 45 minute aqua fit session, led by a highly motivational instructor! Im aching today!! The thermal spa is a wonderful place to spend your time at Ragdale, the mixture of dry heat and steam really relaxes those tired muscles and allows essential oils to start working, soothing stresses away and easing aching bodies! Standing under the shoulder massage waterfall in the pool, is just bliss! And the heat melts your

None of us had any problem finding something we liked and going back for more! The food is part of the luxury of the visit and Ragdale doesn’t disappoint, indeed it surpasses expectation, and the range of salads proved to be so tempting that plates were

a treatment I choose, but the more I have them the more I find they melt away the tensions held in our faces, maybe you arent aware of holding tension there, but from tension comes wrinkles and facials really help with that! Once my treatments were over I spent a final half an hour resting again before getting ready to leave, facing a cold evening and back to reality! Coping with Hay Fever The main March-September pollen season is upon us, so if 2018’s high pollen counts caused you misery, prepare to be proactive: combine prevention and treatment to reduce your symptoms. Prevention Knowing your triggers and the pollen count forecast makes prevention easier. Your GP can refer you for a skin prick test for common allergens or a blood test for the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, produced when you come into contact with SROOHQ <RX FDQ ¾QG WKH 0HW 2I¾FH SROOHQ IRUHFDVW DW ZZZ PHWRI¾FH JRY XN KHDOWK SXEOLF pollen-forecast. Avoid cigarette smoke and alcohol, as they can make your symptoms worse, and reduce pollen contact by: • Avoiding drying washing outside and cutting grass • Showering before bed and wearing fresh clothes daily • Closing windows • Putting Vaseline around your nostrils • Wearing wraparound sunglasses • Vacuuming (preferably with a KHSD ¾OWHU YDFXXP FOHDQHU DQG damp-dusting regularly *HWWLQJ D SROOHQ ¾OWHU IRU \RXU FDUµV DLU YHQWV DQG DLU SXUL¾HU units for indoors 30
Treatment Remember: • Hay fever treatments aren’t effective unless used regularly and as directed. • If your current treatments aren’t working, don’t ignore it—ask your GP or pharmacist for alternatives or treatment combinations.
Both cigarette smoke and drinking alcohol can make your symptoms worse Oral Medications (Tablets and Liquids) Antihistamines block the action of histamine, the chemical that produces your allergic reaction. They may not relieve a blocked nose but usually relieve other symptoms. As a preventative, they work best if taken regularly, starting in advance of high pollen count periods. Some antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine or ‘Piriton’) can make you drowsy and affect your ability to work or drive. If affected, choose non-sedating antihistamines (e.g. Loratadine).
Treating Severe Hay Fever If your symptoms seriously affect \RXU OLIH RU FDXVH H[DFHUEDWH asthma, you may be offered: Steroid tablets (short-term) or steroid inhalers to reduce airway LQ¿DPPDWLRQ ‘Reliever’ inhalers, such as salbutamol, to open up the airways and ease breathing. Injectable monoclonal antibody treatments (‘mabs’) such as Xolair, which block a substance involved in the body’s allergic reaction. Xolair injections are usually given every two or four weeks. Immunotherapy, which builds up your resistance. At a specialist hospital centre, you will be given small amounts of allergen, either by injection into the skin or via a sublingual tablet (which dissolves under the tongue). Your reaction will be monitored closely. You may be able to continue the tablets (‘SLIT therapy’) at home. The dose of allergen is gradually increased until you FDQ WROHUDWH H[SRVXUH ZLWKRXW developing major symptoms. SOUND ADVICE! You probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? ADVICE WORTH HEARING! It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life. If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a local independent family business, with a full-time hearing care centre in Lincoln, covering Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. There is easy accessible parking nearby. We offer FREE hearing tests in a sound proof

Ten ways to cope with dementia as a family Every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia. A diagnosis of dementia is a daunting experience which can test even the strongest family. What stage is it at and how fast will it progress? How will it impact me, mum or dad? Will it mean going straight into a care home? You’ll no doubt have all of these questions spinning around in your head but rest assured; there is help out there. Here is some advice around how to cope with dementia as a family at what is, no doubt, an extremely difficult and emotional time. • Get an accurate diagnosis: This is essential so that you understand what it is you are dealing with and what to expect • Communicate regularly: Keeping family members updated
and informed of all the changes in a loved one’s condition can help alleviate confusion and hard feelings. • Consult with professionals: A family meeting with a professional such as a GP may be needed to ensure that everyone shares the same information and gets the resources they need. • Learn skills and techniques: The behavioural changes that come with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can be difficult to manage. • Expect change and learn to manage it: Dementias are everchanging conditions. Family carers can find solace and support by sharing with others who are facing similar challenges. • Ask for help if you’re the primary carer: Perhaps you’re the only one of your
family/siblings living locally to your parent. Whatever the circumstance, carers of seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias shouldn’t try to cope alone. • Tune into the main carers needs: If you’re not the main family carer, be attentive to the person who is. • Assign tasks: Even family members who live out of town can do things to help. • Consider the family legacy: What will the family dynamic be after your senior loved one is gone? What do you want the legacy of this experience to be? • Tap into resources: Families can’t have too much information when it comes to trying to manage the potential behavioural changes of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

It was clear he’d been the victim of his cousin’s cruel practical joke.
Laundry Day “Give me a hand with this would you?” Danny had been sitting anxiously on the park bench. He turned to a lady with a mass of wild grey hair struggling to throw a length of thin rope over the branch of a nearby oak tree.
“Who’d want my threadbare sheets?” the lady cackled, XQUDYHOOLQJ D ¿RZHU\ GXYHW cover. “It’s my First Day of Spring ritual, they always smell lovely after a blast of country air.”
“Me?” Danny said.
“Doesn’t anybody ever stop you?” he asked.
“Yes you, you’re a tall lad,” she called, unravelling the rope. “I want to tie this end to this tree, and the other end to that big one over there.” Danny was glad of the distraction. His cousin had set him up on a blind date with her friend Rebecca, and he wasn’t at all sure what to expect. Under the lady’s watchful eye, he tied up the rope so that it was taut between the two trees. “We’re going to peg out my washing,” she said, smiling. He then saw a wicker basket ¾OOHG ZLWK GDPS ODXQGU\ RQ D rock behind her.
“Like who?” She took a couple of pegs from a bag. “Air’s free, isn’t it?”

“You seem like a really nice person,” he began, “and you’ve got some very interesting laundry ideas…” “Thank you,” the lady said admiring her line of washing. “You seem quite a nice lad yourself.” “But I’m worried about the age gap,” Danny continued, choosing his words carefully. “I’m not sure we’d have a lot in common.” The lady brushed her hair out of her eyes and squinted at him. “I have to disagree,” she said, and winked. “There’s one thing we’ve got in common.” “What’s that?” Danny said warily; he’d hoped she would be better at taking the hint. “My granddaughter Rebecca,” she laughed, as a girl of Danny’s age walked towards them. “Hello Nanna.” She kissed the lady on the cheek. “Hello Rebecca. This is Danny. He’s been very chivalrous.” Danny felt his face burning. She patted his shoulder kindly. “I don’t think you need a chaperone.” She handed him the basket. “Just bring in my washing when it’s ready.”

Is A Diesel Car Right For Me? Despite recent bad publicity, GLHVHOV VWLOO ¾W WKH ELOO IRU VRPH GULYHUV ° DQG ZH H[SODLQ ZK\ In September 2015, the world of diesel changed forever when news broke that Volkswagen had been covering up illegally high emissions of nitrogen oxides from its diesel vehicles. Since then diesel has come under a lot of pressure, with various groups calling for it to be heavily taxed or even banned altogether. Many say that diesel was mis-sold to buyers, promising low emissions and high fuel economy when in reality it was totally unsuitable for the journeys they do. This is because diesel fuel contains more energy than petrol, meaning that even though it’s slightly more expensive it offers more miles per gallon. However, in most cases, diesel variants of cars cost more to buy than their petrol equivalents, so depending on the price gap you’ll need to do more miles to break even. That’s not really good news if you regularly undertake lots of journeys shorter than that, and it gets worse, too. However, several cars simply don’t offer a viable alternative to diesel, leaving you with the choice of sticking with the oil-burner or choosing a different car. Let’s take pickup trucks, for example – there’s currently not a single petrol-powered crew-cab pickup on the UK market. The same is often true of people carriers, and even some executive or family cars have this issue, too. Move into the more luxurious end of the market and \RX PD\ ¾QG WKH GLHVHO is the ‘sensible’ option. Sure, there’s a petrol version available – but it’s a monstrous V8 with a daft amount of horsepower and D IXHO HFRQRP\ ¾JXUH LQ WKH teens. In these situations, you may just have to work
around a diesel – taking regular long journeys and making sure it’s impeccably serviced to keep the emission control systems running as they should. There’s no doubt many drivers of diesel cars today would be better off in a petrol
model, or even an equivalent hybrid or electric model. Yet the fuel has its uses, for high-mileage, heavily-laden or penny-pinching buyers. As always, just shop carefully and consider all of your options before you buy. By James Baggott

Who are the Christadelphians? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century. Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20]. Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15]. There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us.
