Pets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.â&#x20AC;?

All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time.

The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for young children to handle.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs.

Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve decided what type of animal you want, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll QHHG WR Ă&#x20AC;QG WKH SHW WKDW¡V ULJKW for you. Less reputable breeders donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bills in the future.

If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;borrowingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; one for walks and play. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth asking around to see if any of

your neighbours need some extra help. Or check out The Cinnamon Trust (www. cinnamon.org.uk), which puts volunteer dog walkers in touch with pet owners who need support. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also Borrow My Doggy (www. borrowmydoggy.com), which connects dog walkers and pet sitters with pet owners. Lots of animal rescues also need people to foster pets long or short term.

How to manage the cost of entertaining the kids this summer (not to mention back-to-school expenditure) financial trouble. <RX·UH QRW risking the roof over your head and will still be able to buy the groceries to feed your family.

If you’re worried about the cost of entertaining your children this summer, you’re not alone. It’s been estimated the average family spends £389 on entertaining the kids during the summer holidays.¹ Ecommerce marketplace Groupon surveyed 3,000 parents and found that 9% started planning and saving for the school summer holidays up to six months beforehand.

Furthermore, 35% of parents had to cut back on their everyday spending at the end of the summer because they’d spent too much during the school holidays.¹ So in the light of this, what can you do to ease your financial situation at this time of year?

Here are just a few ideas to help you manage the cost of entertaining the children and deal with the inevitable back-toschool expenditure.

Prioritise your spending Prioritising essential outgoings, such as rent, mortgage payments or council tax, allows you to steer clear of serious 12

Don’t assume you’ll be able to catch up with priority payments later on, however – once you start getting behind with these, it won’t be long before you’re in serious debt.

Make a budget By carefully budgeting before the summer begins, you may find areas where you can cut back. Knowing exactly where your money goes means you can consciously reduce your outgoings wherever possible, and potentially find some extra money to spend on taking the kids for a day out.

Perhaps there are one or two subscriptions that could be cancelled, for example, or a cheaper supermarket that you could try, plus getting into the habit of cooking meals from scratch when you’re at home will save some money in its own right, and is a good precedent to set for the whole year.

Find free or low-cost activities in your area Make full use of the internet by searching for free activities in \RXU DUHD <RX VKRXOG EH DEOH to find a few deals on days out, or coupons and vouchers for money off entry to kids’ attractions. Theme parks can be particularly expensive for families, but with a ‘2 for 1’ offer on admissions, or a meal deal when you’re there, you’ll all enjoy a great day out without it breaking the bank.

The best ideas for free activities depend on how old your children are, but could include such pursuits as story time at the local library, walks or bike rides in the countryside, or hopscotch and skipping games.

Children’s clothes and toys are great sellers, for example, but also books and CDs. Online questionnaires and surveys are also a good way for you to earn a little more, and these can be completed from the comfort of your own home after the children have gone to bed.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for youâ&#x20AC;Ś First up â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer.

UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;SPFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection.

The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours.

Life Begins Back to stay (and not just for the weekend)

When, in November 2017, the Chancellor announced relief on Stamp Duty SD\PHQWV IRU Ă&#x20AC;UVW WLPH buyers, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely that millions of parents across the UK breathed a sigh of relief. It is estimated that 3.4 million parents in the UK are living with grown up children whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve returned to the family home, and these mums and dads may have hoped the tax incentive would be the nudge their offspring needed WR Ă&#x20AC;QDOO\ Ă \ WKH QHVW The phenomenon of socalled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Boomerang Kidsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (adults who return to the parental home after living independent lives) hit the headlines recently when the London School of Economics and Political Science carried out research with parents aged between 50 and 75 from seventeen different European countries.

The study, published in the journal Social Science and 38

Medicine, examined the effects on quality of life for older people who shared a house with a grown up child.

Researchers looked at factors such as freedom to enjoy yourself, to make your own decisions and control your environment, and the results were disturbing. The academics who authored the study didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pull their punches when it came to their conclusions: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found that parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experienced a decline in quality of life when one of their children returned to live with them,â&#x20AC;? they stated, adding: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Parents enjoy their independence when their children leave the KRPH DQG UHĂ&#x20AC;OOLQJ DQ HPSW\ nest may be regarded as a violation of this life course stage.â&#x20AC;?

The â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Boomerangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience So how does it feel when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re asked to provide bed and board for a grown up child after theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lived independently for several years? Marsha Okafor was initially pleased and excited when her 23-year-

old daughter Leah asked to return home so she could VDYH IRU D GHSRVLW RQ D Ă DW However, after two years she found that the effort of sharing her tiny Birmingham apartment with her daughter was putting a strain on their relationship.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the little things, like the time she spends in the bathroom, and asking friends round when I all I want is a quiet evening in front of the telly,â&#x20AC;? Marsha sighs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love my daughter, but having her here effectively puts my own life on hold. I had plans to move closer to my sisters in Nottingham, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do that while Leah needs to live in Birmingham for her work.â&#x20AC;?

Jane and Phillip Leahy experienced similar problems when their son Mark asked to spend a few weeks at their home as he was between jobs and couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afford his rent. The weeks turned into years and although Mark found another job, he showed no sign of wanting to leave.

his food, but it doesn’t compensate for the feeling that our home isn’t quite our own any more. I think we’re partly to blame: we’ve taken away his motivation to build a life of his own.”

Preparing the ground for your child’s return The biggest mistake reported by people who have been through the ‘boomerang’ experience is that they didn’t discuss the terms of the arrangement before their child moved back in.

This is the time to establish the ground rules and set clear goals for the end of their stay.

It may seem insensitive to talk about leaving before your child has even moved back in, but acknowledging this as

a temporary arrangement will help them hold on to a sense of independence.

If your child has a job, you should agree upfront on the amount they will contribute towards the household bills. If they are not working you could ask them to help in various ways, such as cleaning, shopping or tending the garden.

Discuss how things will work if your child invites friends round, and which rooms are off-limits at those times. It may be less stressful if you restrict visits to certain days or hours.

Finally – and most importantly – it’s vital to treat your child as the adult they have become. In the years they

have been living away from you, it’s likely they will have established a lifestyle that’s very different to the family life you shared together, so give them space and don’t be tempted to ‘parent’ them in the way you used to do.

Whatever your child’s reason for returning home may be, it’s likely that this is just a phase, after which they will once again be able to lead an independent life. Handled carefully, this episode may even strengthen the bonds between you and your son or daughter, creating a tighter family unit that will go on providing mutual support far into the future.
