GO GO GO Intensive Driving Instruction Go Go Go Intensive offers learner drivers a fast and cost effective way to pass both the driving theory test and practical driving test for a standard fee of £795. According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the average driver needs 45 professional lessons and 20 professional or family member lessons costing between £1200 - £1400 & taking up to 60 weeks to pass their driving test. Go Go Go Intensive run structured courses at their training centre, dividing the learners time between classroom theory sessions and actual driving. The syllabus, developed by a Defence Driving Examiner and based on the Military and Police system, recognises the most efficient and cost effective way of obtaining a driving licence. This is because there are no gaps in learning where a student can forget what they did during a lesson a week before. Courses run Monday to Friday from 9 - 5. The first hour is spent in the classroom with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who starts the training for the theory test. Students are collected by their driving Instructor at 10.00am where they have a two hour intensive driving lesson, a rest break for half an hour, followed by a further two hour intensive driving lesson, returning to the class room for further training and finishing at 5.00pm each day. By the end of the week students should have passed their theory test and have covered all aspects of normal driving. Students signed off as test ready can take a cancellation test booking , booked by Go Go Go. We are so confident of our teaching methods that if student fails the theory test, or practical driving test after being signed off as test ready any corrective lessons will be provided free of charge until a test pass is achieved.

2

June2013.indd 2

Go Go Go has unique links with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and gives free Affiliate membership, for 12 months, to all students that pass their driving test. The IAM teaches the Police system called “ Roadcraft” and when applied you cannot have a collision that is your fault. Given the Governments statistic that one in five new drivers crash within 6 months of passing their driving test the system is an invaluable tool and dramatically reduces Insurance premiums. Go Go Go is in Peterborough, a very easy 28 minute train journey from Newark. Coupled with the reduced cost of the intensive training, this makes Go Go Go Intensive a very real option for learner drivers in Newark.

Letter from the Editor Well finally June has arrived and it’s been a rocky start to the summer. I think we may have already had it! Exams are in full swing and frayed, nervous teens and Uni students are everywhere swotting away. Father’s Day is around the corner, we have some great ideas on gifts and where to go this month, including the Levity Festival for some great laughs and keeping those teens occupied in the Summer Holidays with the NCN summer programme. If you are considering Driving lessons, look at the intensive Driving course at Go Go Go- I did the maths and plan on sending my son there this summer. Terrific competitions again this month, you can enter online or by post, but get those entries in because you have to be in it to win it! If you have 5 minutes spare, take time to enjoy the short story or have a go at one of our puzzles, while you put your feet up with a cup of tea. Finally, take some time to go out and enjoy some of the events we have highlighted for you this month and be sure to tell everyone you heard about them through Use Locally Magazine. All the best Karol

Many hotels across the county also support local produce through their restaurants and it’s worth considering these as places to eat. Look out for the Tastes of Nottinghamshire logo on selected products on our website. Nottinghamshire is a haven for foodies. Almost everywhere you look and turn there are fantastic boutique cafes, sumptuous restaurants, farm shops and diverse markets offering a range of dishes, which are homemade and include locally produced ingredients. Treat yourself this month and make supporting local produce part of your weekly shop.

Here in Nottinghamshire we are brimming with pride at the range of food and drink produced locally across the county. With an outstanding array of produce that ranges from the Bramley Apple to Stilton Cheese, we have some excellent places to eat and purchase local delicacies. In Newark, you will find little gems in the form of cafes and restaurants that support local producers and use fresh ingredients on a daily basis to create mouth-watering dishes.

NEWARK CONCRETE

Newark Concrete is a local business supplying local companies and people alike. At the heart of the business is their strong commitment to customer relationships and service, this as well as product innovation and dedication makes them stand out above the crowd.

Supplying all levels of users from the big builders such as Balfour Beatty, to local building firms to the end user building a base for the garden shed or garage.

Since humble beginnings over 25 years ago, the company has grown to be what it is today, retaining some of the original staff from the start. Bought out by Tarmac, in 2012, who then formed a Joint Venture company with Lafarge in 2013. This means Newark Concrete now have all the back up and technology of the multi nationals. Whilst at the same time retaining the local management and feel, Lafarge are recognised as an industry leader with regards to Concrete technology and innovation, and this means that all of these advances in technology are now becoming available in Newark. NEWARK CONCRETE (cont...)

The fleet of lorries are washed down several times a day at both entry and exit of the yard to comply with BSI accredited practices, preventing spillage onto our roads, and thereby ensuring no problems for other road users. Another way that Newark Concrete helps take care of the local environment.

It’s fair to say that the construction industry has found the last few years challenging in the tough economic times we are experiencing. But Newark Concrete have had plenty to keep their staff in work and themselves busy, from supplying coloured concrete for playgrounds, footpaths and driveways, to supplying Newark Cricket and Rugby Clubs, and even Nottingham Forrest training ground. They are one of the sources for the pre cast concrete companies that supplied the Olympic Park, and aircraft take off and land on their product at Waddington , Cranwell and Gamston, to name a few local airfields. So from farmers needing concrete pads to Olympians, concrete is something we all use without even thinking about it. Something tells me that we will still be looking to Newark Concrete in another 25 years for solid local support for our infrastructure.

There are two local plants, one in Grantham and the other in Newark, both of which have supplied many local projects, from the Newark Castle renovations, the recent building of the A46 bypass, and a little known fact – they supplied 20,000m³ to the Tuxford - Long Bennington A1 road improvements. Fernwood stands on concrete they supplied and the footings for the houses are from Newark Concrete. The very ground you are walking on today could be supplied by Newark Concrete.

Handy Household - Vinegar Most of us use vinegar to make salad dressings or to splash on our chips, but it is far more versatile than that. For instance, white distilled vinegar can be used to tenderise meat, a dash added to cooking pasta will prevent stickiness and adding a splash to a poaching egg will keep the white better formed. When you’ve finished cooking, you can even mix it with water to make a cheap, but effective, detergent. What’s more, if you’re finding it hard to lose weight, mix a tablespoon of any type of vinegar into a glass of water and drink daily. It will regulate your blood sugar levels and curb your appetite. It’s also worth keeping some white distilled vinegar in the bathroom, where you can use it as an antiseptic on cuts and grazes, to soothe painful sunburn or even, mixed with equal parts water, as a skin toner. Even the car can benefit from this ancient ingredient. Use it neat on a soft cloth to polish chrome or wipe clean dirty windscreen wipers and if you need to get rid of unpleasant odours from inside your car, just leave a bowl of white distilled vinegar on the car floor overnight.

Health & Beauty

Beauty Tips – Eyelashes Great eyelashes will really accentuate your eyes and give you a wide-awake look. Although not all ladies are blessed with long, thick eyelashes, there are many options available to give either a completely natural look or obviously emphasised eyes. The most immediate but shortest lasting choice is to use mascara. There are numerous options offering lash lengthening and thickening. Buying a good brand and taking the time to apply a couple of coats will really pay dividends. If your eyelashes are fair, it is very difficult with mascara to colour right down to the eyelid so you should opt to have your eyelashes dyed which will naturally appear to lengthen your lashes too. You can do it at home but the results will be far better if you ask a professional and it’s an inexpensive salon treatment which lasts for several weeks. False eyelashes are commonplace in the world of celebrities, and ranges are available from a naturally enhanced look through to over-the-top and even obviously false using colours, jewels or feathers. They are best for a special occasion though rather than for regular daily use. If you love the effect of ‘falsies’ but want something longer lasting and more practical, then consider semi-permanent eyelash extensions. These are applied a lash at a time and are tailored to suit you. They will look and feel completely natural and although you don’t really need mascara too, you can still apply a little to the end of your lashes for extra emphasis. They will last around 8 to 12 weeks, although an ‘infill’ is recommended after 3 to 4 weeks.

Short Story The Crab Sandwich The beach was a well kept secret. On a day like today, other beaches would be teeming with holiday makers, but this secluded cove, a hike across grassy dunes, was known only to the locals. Barry stood, hands on hips, breathing in the fresh sea air. “We have the beach to ourselves, Daffers”, Barry called. “Nothing but us, the surf, the seagulls and delicious crab sandwiches”. Daphne was panting from the weight of the picnic hamper and bruised from the deckchair banging against her shin. Barry had insisted they bring them, but was unable to help carry due to a nasty back strain. By the time she reached the beach Barry had sandals off and was paddling in the surf. “Just set up anywhere”, he said. “I wish we’d bought a bucket and spade now”. Daphne doubted she could have carried another thing. “Wouldn’t digging be bad for your back?” “Oh yes”. Barry rubbed his back thoughtfully. Daphne battled to erect the deckchair while Barry watched. Then he eased himself down into it. “Ready for a spot of lunch?” He opened the hamper. “I couldn’t resist the crab sandwiches from that new delicatessen”. Barry took out the sandwiches wrapped in a paper bag. There was also a bottle of sparkling elderflower juice and several kilos of freezer packs. 22

June2013.indd 22

“You had me lug all these?” Daphne said. “And what’s this?” Underneath was a hardback novel. “I fancied a spot of light reading”, Barry replied. The book was at least 800 pages long. Daphne was too hot to argue; all she wanted was a nice cold drink. “There’s only one glass”. She searched the hamper. “Yes, I didn’t want to weigh you down. You don’t mind swigging from the bottle, do you Daffers?” Daphne didn’t mind, though she objected when Barry used the handkerchief he’d been wearing on his head to wipe the bottle neck. Daphne bit into her sandwich, then chewed thoughtfully. Her taste-buds debated what she was eating. “Barry, there’s been a mistake. This is cottage cheese”. He wiped the crumbs from his lips. “Yes, I only had enough for one crab sandwich. They’re pricey, and I thought we’d agreed you were watching your weight”. Daphne fumed as she chewed on her tasteless sandwich, watching Barry savour every mouthful of his. A seagull landed and strutted about in the sand close by. “What a majestic creature”, Barry said. And Daphne had to agree that it was a beautiful bird. She was always amazed by how large seagulls were,

and what intelligent eyes they had. The bird wandered a little closer. “Shoo birdy!” Barry called. “Get your eyes off my crab sandwich”. The bird cawed and took to the sky. “That showed him”, Barry smiled. He was about to take another bite when the bird returned, dive bombing straight for him. Barry yelped and dropped his sandwich. With practised speed the seagull picked up its prize and dashed away. Barry leaped to his feet. Grabbing the hamper, he held it above his head and chased the bird towards the water. Daphne stared as Barry, without showing the slightest twinge in his back, threw the hamper at the bird, which, calmly spread its wings and flew into the sky, along with the crab sandwich. Barry came stomping back towards Daphne. “I blame tourists, they feed them chips and this is what happens”. Daphne swallowed the last mouthful of her sandwich and nipped into the vacant deckchair. “I totally agree with you”. She picked up the novel and turned to page one, “But, so lovely to see that your back has been fixed”. By Jackie Brewster

Swimming with Mother in Law This happened last Monday, a knock at the door, An unscheduled visit, from Mother In Law “Will you come down the pool with me, have a quick dip? “It closes at twelve so we’ll have to be quick,” ‘Twas the last thing I wanted, she’s now eighty-two, She’s bad tempered and cranky; the dog thinks so too, And my costume is old; I’ve since put on some weight, But dismissing my fears, she just wouldn’t debate. I went in the changing rooms, feeling so frumpy, Emerged back outside all self-conscious and grumpy It was then that I noticed her, patiently waiting, When I saw her attire; nearly needed sedating A hat with pink flowers, bright leaves of green plastic, A costume so baggy; lost all its elastic, It covered her body from head down to toe, There was nowhere this bathing suit didn’t quite go, She was obviously dressing for aqua-marine, ‘Cos a snorkel and flippers completed the scene, I relaxed very quickly, ‘twas so plain to see, That with her by my side, no-one’s looking at me…

Step back into history, and visit Church Farm Village, Skegness.

Get in on the current baking craze, by learning baking methods from around 1900, at Lincolnshire’s only open air museum situated right in the heart of the seaside town of Skegness, but The Village is so much more than just a museum. The farmhouse was built in 1760 (making it the second oldest building in Skegness), and has been furnished to the period 1900-1910. The kitchen retains a working coal fire range with regular baking demonstrations. Rooms such the pantry, parlour, nursery and bedroom are set out as if the occupier has just stepped outside for a moment. On leaving the farmhouse and heading towards the pond and orchard, call in at the Washhouse. Dolly tubs, mangles, irons.. Reminders of washday before the automatic washing machine! There are lots of different events all summer long, from Native American Days to the Heavy Horse Experience It’s a wonderful day out for the whole family! Enter the competition and just by entering, receive a free tea or coffee when you visit. The Village Church Farm is run entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers who gladly give up their time and skills for free. “We do not

receive any money from central government or local councils. Proverbial Life – Straw that broke the camel’s back

There’s a broken tile in my bathroom that’s about to cause a major incident.

This isn’t any old tile; this is the tile that despite my best efforts has remained broken for three years. This is the tile that may just signal the end of my marriage, my descent into screaming madness and the end of peace in this household. This is the tile that haunts me with its broken corner and cracked face. Over the years repeated requests to replace this tile have elicited a variety of responses from Mr Fixit (otherwise known as Husband). Promises have been made to fix it: ‘Tomorrow, at the weekend, when I get a spare minute.’ Multiple reasons have been given as to why this tile has not been sorted out: a lost tile cutter, a lack of adhesive, a slip of memory, a dearth of daylight (apparently tile fixing can only occur in optimum weather conditions). I’ve even offered to do the job myself. This was met with snorts of laughter and comments about my inability to change a light bulb; which is unfair as I can change light bulbs in an emergency…as long as there is a step ladder to hand and someone to catch me if I fall. I’ve been a reasonable woman – so far. I’ve left a respectable interval between tile fixing requests; I haven’t tutted, rolled my eyes, muttered

under my breath or screamed at the top of my lungs – yet. In the normal course of events a broken tile wouldn’t overly bother me, but after three years I feel I’ve got just cause for grievance. Therefore, I have now decided to take matters totally, completely and utterly into my own hands. I’m going to take unilateral action to bring ‘Tilegate’ to a satisfactory conclusion – I’m going to get someone in to do it. This is something I’ve previously offered to do, only to be met with looks of absolute incredulity and horror that I would even consider such disloyalty to this home’s Mr Fixit. However, I’ve been driven to take this action by a nugget of information that came my way yesterday. My Mr Fixit has offered to do some wallpapering in our son’s home. Now, not only has he offered to do it but he’s set a firm date for work to commence. I’m dumbfounded, flabbergasted and livid. I don’t begrudge our son his father’s help; however, I want this tile fixed! Therefore, I’ve already phoned up a very nice man who advertises locally. He’s coming next week to replace the tile, and he’s also going to have a look at the carpet that needs fixing down, the sticking door in the kitchen and the loose blind in the living room. I’m on a bit of a roll now. I have no intention of telling my beloved Mr Fixit that another man will be trespassing on his territory. Instead I intend to wait until he notices that the offending tile has been replaced; then I shall casually say: ‘Oh yes, I got someone in to do it.’ I can’t wait.

Fuel’s gold It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life. Tyred Out The penalty for driving on illegal tyres (under 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s boots weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy.

Guide says a comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value. Hose Down A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers. Wheel-ie good idea Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Musical Food Chain All men are not created equal. Everybody knows this. But nowhere is the sting of society’s inequality felt more savagely than in the cut-throat world of rock ‘n’ roll. I think it’s pretty well-established that guitar players sit at the top of The Musical Food Chain. You only need to walk into any music shop, anywhere in the world, to be presented with stark visual evidence of the fact that being the guitarist makes you automatically Much More Important Than The Rest Of The Band. It is nothing less than cast-iron scientific fact that 92% of the space in any given music shop will be dedicated to guitars. Thousands of them, all lined up in shining rows, attended to by at least fifteen eager salesmen waiting to satisfy a guitarist’s every whim and fancy. ‘Would you like that double-necked twelve-string guitar in a slightly paler shade of sunburst orange, sir? No problem. We have every possible permutation of this model in stock.’

CHRIS: That’s not a problem – I can wait while you set it up.

Here’s a challenge for you though. Walk into your local instrument store sometime and see if you can find the keyboard section. Seriously, try it. It’s hilarious. It’s like looking for the salad bar in McDonalds.

CHRIS: But you’re a music shop. I am a music consumer. I want to try out a keyboard and then, if all goes according to plan, give you money for it and take away the goods in return. That’s basic capitalism.

Below is a transcript of a conversation I had in one of London’s leading music stores some years back. Whilst my guitarist was upstairs indulging in a fantastically chirpy exchange with a sales clerk and merrily churning out Dire Straits riffs, I had been trying to locate the keyboard section. When I eventually found it (and after having waited long enough for service that I could actually feel algae growing on the soles of my feet), I was reluctantly approached by a very bored-looking employee, whom for convenience we shall name Dirk:

DIRK: Can’t you tell just by looking at it?

CHRIS: Can I speak to your keyboard specialist?

DIRK: Nah, that one’s not for sale.

DIRK: Sorry, what? CHRIS: Is there someone here who knows about keyboards?

This went on for a little while until, presently, I battered him to death.

DIRK: Oh, no. We don’t do that. CHRIS: How am I supposed to know it’s the right model for me then? DIRK: Dunno.

[I look at the keyboard for a couple of seconds.] CHRIS: OK, fine. I’ll just go ahead and buy it then. DIRK: No mate, you can’t. We don’t have any left. CHRIS: But I’m looking at one right now! See how my hands touch it!

CHRIS: I’ve spotted that you have one over there and was wondering if I could try it out?

So you see, discrimination and prejudice exist in all walks of life and, amongst the world’s many minority groups, it is perhaps keyboard players who feel this most acutely. There are myriad possible explanations for why things have turned out like this but, whichever way you look at it, keyboardists are at the bottom of The Musical Food Chain. The plankton of rock ‘n’ roll. And please do pity us because, if things go on like this, we could one day become extinct.

DIRK: No, you can’t. It’s not set up.

Maybe I should contact the World Wildlife Fund.

DIRK: Not really. CHRIS: Oh. Right. Well, I’m interested in the M-Audio Keystation. DIRK: And?
