TITAN Containers

TITAN Containers supplies domestic and commercial clients all over the East Midlands – and those customers have all got one thing in common… … They all need more space. Sometimes a lot more space. With brand new containers to hire and buy, TITAN can handle any domestic or commercial requirement. Their customers may be moving house, de-cluttering, or expanding their business, so they use TITAN’s containers to store treasured goods, stock and equipment. Now in their third decade in the UK, the container sale and rental business is growing and expanding. They’re one of the country’s big success stories. They’ve opened a number of new centres up and down the country in the last year. That’s great news for customers. As TITAN Director, Phil Brewer explains, “Obviously the more centres we have, the less our customers have to pay for delivery.” New self-store facility in the East Midlands TITAN has now expanded to the East Midlands. Phil tells us, “From our brand new centre in Asfordy, Melton Mowbray, we deliver containers throughout the East Midlands, using our own vehicles, including a brand new crane lorry. We already had a ‘third party’ depot in Walsall,

8

July2013Dandalf.indd 8

so we knew we needed a centre specifically to cover business in the East Midlands. Our site at Melton Mowbray now lets us help customers in Leicestershire, Grantham Oakham, Nottingham, Newark and more.” The Asfordby site is a self-store facility too, and provides a comprehensive range of containers for a variety of uses. “What are our containers used for?” Phil ponders, “Everything!” Room to grow Storage is a growing business. Literally. With containers to suit all requirements – even chilled or freezer containers – TITAN gives customers room to grow. And if you’re moving house, TITAN can give you a stress-free alternative to the usual removals process. Just hire a TITAN container instead. TITAN will deliver it for you. Then you can fill it at your own pace and in your own time. They’ll collect it when you’ve finished and store it safely back at their depot until you’re ready to have it re-delivered after your move. But TITAN’s containers aren’t just used for storage. They’ve been put to excellent use as changing rooms, offices and workshops too. Why do customers choose TITAN?

TITAN Containers(cont...)

TITAN makes hiring or buying a container genuinely affordable – with an exceptional price per space ratio. But there’s more to it than that. TITAN makes the whole process so easy. Their self-store customers have access to their container/s six days a week, in a safe, secure environment. They offer a great range of sizes and colours too – yes, you can even choose the colour of your container! (That’s certainly useful if you’re hiring a container for public use, or want it to fit your brand colours.) Containers for sale Need to buy a container? That’s easy too. Phil explains, “That’s another advantage of having so many local centres. A company can choose a container, and we can deliver it for them more quickly and more cheaply.” TITAN is even the company that other self-store companies buy from! Phil admits, “Yes, some of our biggest customers are other self-store businesses.” They know that when they choose TITAN containers, they’re getting newly-made containers, in colours to suit. Customer focus With demand for more storage options growing all the time, TITAN isn’t just here to fill that need. With a true dedication to their customers’ requirements, TITAN helps people and businesses manage their space, and

10

July2013Dandalf.indd 10

expand and grow their business. Phil says, “We build new containers every month. So the supply really is inexhaustible. And because we use our own lorries, and we don’t use third party suppliers, we keep the costs down for our customers.” Deal with TITAN and you’ll appreciate the savings and the size options. You’ll enjoy the easy access to your container, or the quick delivery. But above all, you’ll love their commitment to service. This is a company that thinks big, but keeps a local focus. This is a company with a European reputation and a host of big clients that goes out of their way to make your life / your work / your move easier.

Handy Tip - Bicarb The benefits of Bicarb Whether you know it as baking soda, bicarbonate of soda, sodium bicarbonate or simply, bicarb, no home should be without this wonder product. While it’s regularly used in cooking as a raising agent, bicarbonate of soda has many more household uses offering an economical, non-toxic and effective remedy for a whole host of health, beauty and cleaning challenges. It’s deodorising powers are second to none – a slight dusting under the arms or in your shoes will keep you smelling fresh all day and if the cat litter tray starts to offend, just sprinkle some bicarb in the bottom to neutralise those nasty odours. n fact, bicarb can be used to deodorise everything from dishwashers to fridges, and a soak in a diluted solution, will freshen up any kitchenware from old thermos flasks to coffee makers. 12

July2013Dandalf.indd 12

Always keep some in the bathroom because if you run out of toothpaste, bicarb mixed into a paste with water, will do the job just as well. This miracle paste also makes a fantastic skin exfoliator and can also be used to soothe itchy insect bites or, diluted with water, can be drunk as a cure for indigestion. What’s more, if you add it to your bath water it will even soften your skin. It’s ability to cut through grease and oil stains make it particularly handy for adding to your weekly wash, or cleaning burnt pans or even for unblocking drains – simply pour down some bicarb, followed by boiling water. Need any more convincing? Well, it’s also an effective fire extinguisher and can douse the flames of small kitchen fires. No home should be without it.

Facing The Music Dealing with personal debt By James Smith The story is a common one. It begins with a few minor expenses paid on a credit card. The habit develops to include a weekend break, then meals, and perhaps a new television to replace the old one before another credit card is retrieved from the mantelpiece - a flyer detailing an ‘unbeatable’ 0% 6-month introductory rate and healthy £5,000 credit limit. As well as cards, there are other offers to temp the lowly consumer: loans, remortgages, overdrafts, all with unique methods of repayment, that seemingly provide access to cash in more immediate and exciting ways than saving. As the personal burden grows, however, there’s a need for increasingly creative ways to juggle the bills, perhaps by shifting the balance between cards, consolidating them into a personal loan, or remortgaging the house to swallow the entire debt. But alas, these measures all lead into the abyss of spiralling debt. What comes next is a wad of paperwork telling an uncomfortable story of outstanding balances, demands of repayment, or threats of court action. For the working man or woman, this extra burden compounds everyday responsibilities of work, children, and bills to a frightening degree, such that

every waking hour is consumed by the fear and dread of an ever-worsening predicament. What started as a little extravagance on that solitary plastic friend, turns into an allconsuming monster.

What to do?

Action is the only answer. Fortunately, help is at hand, and in a way, the current climate of indebtedness has removed some of the associated stigma. In the UK, the Citizens Advice Bureau is an excellent first port of call in a storm. They will first assess your financial situation. If you have any income, they may suggest a debt management plan, and even negotiate monthly repayments you can afford with your creditors. Sale of assets, repossession, or bankruptcy are other possibilities that are not the end of the world, but will require you to adapt and take a new approach to dealing with money. Other organisations can offer assistance, but beware of the sharks and never try to resolve the situation by undertaking more debt. Payplan provide debt help and advice via their website and freephone number, with options ranging from debt managements plans, trust deeds (residents of Scotland only), and IVAs (Individual Voluntary Arrangements) for

self-employed people. IVAs can avoid bankruptcy through a formal arrangement with creditors to pay a proportion of your unsecured debts. Payplan provide their services free of charge and are funded by donations from the credit industry, thus they claim impartiality. Like the Citizens Advice Bureau, StepChange (formerly CCCS) is a charity offering a number of options all comprehensively explained on their very slick website and freephone service. Insolvency practitioners (IPs) can advise on debt problems and whether bankruptcy is the best way forward. They can also oversee the processes of company liquidation, bankruptcy, or IVAs, depending on individual needs. It’s imperative to use the services of a licenced IP, but your first port of call might be one of the aforementioned organisations prior to taking this route. Talking through your problems is an important stage in moving your life forward - you will realise that many people are in the same predicament and you should not be ashamed. Climbing out of a quagmire of personal debt is a tough, and often lengthy process, but when you come through, you will be able to look positively to the future once more.

We are delighted to announce The Newark Academy Summer School 2013. Following on from the great success of the ‘Olympic and Paralympic Summer School’ 2011 which won The Newark and Sherwood Award for ‘Community Event of the Year’ we return with the theme of a ‘SPLASH!’ of colour. We would like to invite your child to join us in this unique and exciting project, aimed at Year 5 and 6 pupils. The week will enable children to get to know The Newark Academy, meet staff and make friends here, and of course have a rewarding, fun filled and enjoyable experience during the summer holidays – free of charge.

The ‘SPLASH!’ Summer School will be held at The Newark Academy Lilley and Stone site, to take advantage of the fantastic facilities which include an all-weather pitch and sports fields, dance/drama studio and art studios. There is no cost to attend ‘SPLASH!’. We are expecting high demand for places, and places are limited, so please reply as soon as possible to ensure your child is able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. There will be an Information Evening on Thursday 11th July at 6:30pm in The Newark Academy Theatre, Balderton Site to give out more information and to answer any queries you may have regarding the week. This will also give us an opportunity to discuss any individual needs your child may have We look forward to meeting you soon.

The Summer School will embrace the theme of a ‘SPLASH!’ of colour, including an abundance of inspirational activities for all, based around Sports and Arts activities; this will end in a celebration showcase, to which family and friends are invited. One of the highlights of the week will also be a bespoke day trip out, funded by us. The activities will be delivered by a combination of teachers, the Newark and Sherwood Sports and Arts 20

Short Story Game, Set and Match Danny had spent all morning playing tennis on his own against the garage door. He had won nearly every game, and now felt confident enough to take on a real opponent. His plimsolls stuck to the hot tarmac as he walked along the deserted avenue to his friend Alex’s house. The heat had sent everyone indoors. Even the birds had stopped singing. He found Alex sitting on the edge of his pond, with feet dangling in the water. “Want a game of tennis? Danny asked. “You’ll need your own bat”. Alex grinned and nipped in the shed. He returned with a cobweb covered table tennis bat. It didn’t look at all like Danny’s racket, and he suspected that it might give his friend quite a large handicap, but decided not to say. If Alex was happy, then he was happy.

out and they lose a point”. Danny knew that when you start the game it’s called ‘Love All’, but didn’t mention this in case Alex thought it was a girl’s game and refused to play. “It’s a draw if you get juice,” Danny said instead. Alex seemed both confused and impressed. “Okay,” he bounced up and down. “Let’s play!” In spite of the ping pong bat, Alex proved a more challenging opponent than the garage door; for one thing he argued over goals. For example, when Alex’s shot bounced off the shed roof, rolled along the guttering and disappeared down the drainpipe, Danny agreed that the shot was a work of genius, but didn’t think it was worth five goals. They compromised on two and a half.

They had a few practise shots while Danny explained the rules.

Alex also hit the ball so that it seemed to magically fly straight through Danny’s racket. The ball would then disappear over the garden gate. Danny found that he was searching for the ball in the next door garden much more than he was hitting it. And he was getting hot.

“If I hit the patio doors it’s a goal to me, and if you hit the shed it’s a goal to you. If the ball goes in the pond then whoever hit it in has to get it

Also, unlike the garage door, Alex constantly questioned the rules. While Alex agreed that it didn’t matter how many times the ball bounced, he

Both boys agreed that Alex’s garden was perfect for tennis. It had the pond in the middle to act as a net, a shed on one side and patio doors on the other to act as goals.

22

July2013Dandalf.indd 22

refused to believe that kicking it was okay. Unfortunately this made quite a few of the goals that Danny scored disallowed. Danny was starting to suspect that this game wasn’t going his way. He noticed that, in spite of all his morning’s practise, he was scooping more balls out of the pond than Alex, and hoped that his friend was not keeping too close an eye on the score. Eventually, both boys, the shed and the patio doors were covered in dark splodges of pond water. Danny was tired, thirsty and several goals behind. He couldn’t go on much longer, but desperately didn’t want to lose this game. The patio doors slid open and Alex’s mum appeared, accompanied by the welcome sound of ice cubes tinkling in glass tumblers. “I’ve made you boys a drink,” she called. “Brilliant!” Alex threw down his bat. “Game over!” “What’s the score?” she asked, as Alex slurped his drink. “We’ve got juice,” Danny said, thinking fast. “So that mean’s it’s a draw”. It’s also easy to forget that we have some wonderful speciality shops here in Newark and that we can find local delicacies and traceable produce, right here in town. I like to know that my food has been ethically produced and that it has few food miles, and this has become more and more important to me over the last few months, in the wake of the seemingly regular food scares. I like to buy meat that looks like a piece of meat and food that needs cooking. Its strangely satisfying to produce something that the whole family enjoy from raw ingredients. So make sure this July sees you having a satisfying wander around the featured shops and if there’s somewhere that we are missing, drop me an email and let me know.

National Trust

Tattershall Castle Living History Fortnight Mon 16th- Sun 28th July* 11am-5pm *Friday 26th July open from 1.30pm

For the latest information go to: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/tattershall-castle Or call us on 01526 342543 After a successful first year, Tattershall Castle is repeating its Living History event and it’s been extended for another fun-filled week. For a fortnight in July the Castle, looked after by the National Trust, will be home to a group of 40 re-enactors from around the country. Visitors will step back in time to when Lord Ralph Cromwell, Treasurer of England was in residence and witness what everyday life was like in the Middle Ages. The re-enactors will be occupying both the castle itself and the surrounding grounds demonstrating traditional medieval skills and crafts, such as spinning, brick-making, pottery, performing surgery, cooking and much more. If you are feeling a bit queasy on the day why not go see our apothecary or if you need your armour repairing pop over to the blacksmiths. The whole event is about providing an interactive educational experience in an historical setting for both young and old; history enthusiasts or curious passers-by. Having a 15th century re-enactment event in a medieval castle gives the event a context that bridges the gap between the centuries to allow a hands-on realistic experience. Paul Robinson from the castle explains “Tattershall Castle was lovingly rescued from ruin in 1912 and is one of the finest brick castles in England. With this event we can turn back the clocks and bring the building to life. You not only see history before your eyes, you feel it. The atmosphere last year was fantastic.” Normal admission charges apply Facebook: www.facebook.com/NT.Tattershall Twitter: @tattershallNT

How Many Years Has Heckington Show Been Running?

Win 8 tickets!!

The scene is idyllic as ever it was – leafy trees and green fields in the shadow of Heckington’s towering 14th century church spire. And whilst the scale of this show in 2013 is in a different league to the first one held in 1863, part of its charm is that much of the character of those early village shows remains intact. Motoring

Use Locally - Issue 3, July 2013

Protect your investment

Practical tips to help you save money on motoring. Your car is likely the second biggest purchase you ever make – so it’s vital you protect that investment. Just as you wouldn’t let a leaky roof or broken guttering fester on your house, you need to pay regular attention to your car to keep it in good working order too.

And it’s not just about a bucket and sponge. Simple maintenance tasks can preserve your car’s life and its value at resale time. The difference between a car in ‘excellent’ and ‘below average’ condition can be £1,000, according to trade valuation experts, so it really pays to look after your motor. Here are some practical tips to help you save money in the long run. Well Oil Be It’s amazing how many motorists don’t even know how to check their oil, let alone remember to top it up. However, failing to do so will have dire consequences. Check it fortnightly, making sure the car is on level ground, engine cold and the level is between minimum and maximum. Check coolant levels too and get any abnormal noises or poor performance problems checked by an expert. Air We Go Air-conditioning needs regular attention. Topping up the system with gas and lubricating it will cost around £70 at a garage and should be done every two years. This will stop unpleasant smells and bacteria forming. Poorly serviced systems have to work harder, putting undue strain on the engine. At Your Service The recession saw many motorists skip servicing to try and save money. This really is a false economy. Sticking to your car’s maintenance schedule will ensure it’s working properly, prevent failures and prove it’s been looked after at resale time. Keep every receipt and old MOT, as well as a stamped-up service book for the next owner. Fuel’s gold It might look like a costly alternative to regular fuel, but the AA says a few tanks of super unleaded can help preserve your engine. 32

Motoring

Using three tanks of super in succession will clean injectors and allow the engine to run more efficiently, helping preserve its working life. Tyred Out The penalty for driving on illegal tyres (under 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters) is a fine and three points. Inspect your car’s boots weekly for damage, remove stones in the tread and look for signs of uneven wear. Pressures should be checked monthly too preserving the tyre’s life, and your fuel economy. Easy Does It The way you drive can dramatically affect how long your car will last. Driving with care, avoiding harsh acceleration and hard braking will reduce wear on components. It’s also worth thinking, do you need to make that trip? Lower mileage cars are worth more. Polished off Cleaning your car regularly with quality products is the best way to preserve its value. Glass’s Guide says a comprehensive clean can add £600 to a car’s value. Hose Down A vital part of the car cleaning procedure is to hose the car down before washing. This removes fine particles of grit that can scratch the paintwork as you wash. These scratches will make your paint look dull and hazy, putting off future buyers. Wheel-ie good idea Invest in a quality wheel cleaning brush and wheel cleaner to shift stubborn stains. Apply a coat of wheel wax which will stop future grime taking hold. Used car buyers love alloy wheels, but only if they’re in good condition. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Apprenticeships

In November 2012 The government issued a report commissioned by Doug Richards into the delivery of apprenticeships throughout the UK. “We need to make sure

Keith said “That is why we recently instigated the delivery of a completely new engineering apprenticeship at a local college. By listening to the requirements of local engineering employers and their needs for training, we approached West Nott’s College and arranged a meeting with local employer Derry’s to devise a worthwhile apprenticeship framework that matched the employer’s expectations.” Apprenticeships are varied and far reaching, ranging from Agriculture, ICT, Accounts (AAT), Health and Social Care, Floristry to the more traditional Hairdressing and Engineering and are an ideal way of training a young person to become a valued member of your company. There are many examples of excellent local apprentice’s for example Mark Clucas who went on to win the Land Based Apprentice of the year award. We also have Rosie Bilton and Shannon Walker who are nominated for the East Midlands National Apprentice of the year award. “We are very proud of Mark, Rosie and Shannon these are prestigious awards that are hard fought for.” Said Keith.

that apprenticeships are the success story they deserve to be.” The government has welcomed the report. Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Doug Richard’s review echoes the Government’s current thinking on putting employers in the driving seat of our apprenticeship programme. This will be vital to ensure the skills of our workforce fit with employer needs.

Here at Lets Engage we provide impartial advice on courses available and are currently promoting and delivering independent apprenticeship advice for Nottinghamshire County Council throughout the county, sign posting companies to training providers. If you are interested in discussing apprentices in any area of work please email enquiries@letsengage.org.uk.

His recommendations will help us to build on the current successes of our apprenticeships programme and tailor a programme which is sustainable, high-quality and meets the changing needs of our economy in the decades to come”. Here at Let’s Engage, we completely endorse the ethos of the report. “Absolutely apprenticeships need to be driven by the needs of employers and not training providers.” Said Keith Girling, Director of Lets Engage Ltd.

Willow Tree Therapies 4 Things You Didnt Know About Acupuncture

1. It Doesn’t Hurt It doesn’t hurt, I’m being honest. Most people are terrified of their first acupuncture treatment; they imagine massive knitting needles and lots of pain. The needles are so fine you’re hardly aware of them going in, once all the needles are in place its quite a relaxing treatment.

3. It’s not quackery or Voodoo A lot of research has been done over the last 20 years into Acupuncture and how it works. I see Acupuncture work everyday for patients suffering with long term pain, sciatica, disc injuries and knee pain which haven’t responded to pain relief or treatments recommended by GP’s.

2. It’s recognised by the NHS Acupuncture is recognised for its ability in treating back pain, migraines and nausea.

4. We are regulated and fully trained To make sure you get the best treatment it is important to check that our acupuncturist is registered with The Briish Acupuncture Council who ensure the highest standards of treatments.

GO GO GO Intensive Driving Instruction Call us on 01733 314151

Go Go Go Intensive offers learner drivers a fast and cost effective way to pass both the driving theory test and practical driving test for a standard fee of £795. According to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) the average driver needs 45 professional lessons and 20 professional or family member lessons costing between £1200 - £1400 & taking up to 60 weeks to pass their driving test. Go Go Go Intensive run structured courses at their training centre, dividing the learners time between classroom theory sessions and actual driving. The syllabus, developed by a Defence Driving Examiner and based on the Military and Police system, recognises the most efficient and cost effective way of obtaining a driving licence. This is because there are no gaps in learning where a student can forget what they did during a lesson a week before. Courses run Monday to Friday from 9 - 5. The first hour is spent in the classroom with an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who starts the training for the theory test. Students are collected by their driving Instructor at 10.00am where they have a two hour intensive driving lesson, a rest break for half an hour, followed by a further two hour intensive driving lesson, returning to the class room

for further training and finishing at 5.00pm each day. By the end of the week students should have passed their theory test and have covered all aspects of normal driving. Students signed off as test ready can take a cancellation test booking , booked by Go Go Go. We are so confident of our teaching methods that if student fails the theory test, or practical driving test after being signed off as test ready any corrective lessons will be provided free of charge until a test pass is achieved. Go Go Go has unique links with the Institute of Advanced Motorists and gives free Affiliate membership, for 12 months, to all students that pass their driving test. The IAM teaches the Police system called “ Roadcraft” and when applied you cannot have a collision that is your fault. Given the Governments statistic that one in five new drivers crash within 6 months of passing their driving test the system is an invaluable tool and dramatically reduces Insurance premiums. Go Go Go is in Peterborough, a very easy 28 minute train journey from Newark. Coupled with the reduced cost of the intensive training, this makes Go Go Go Intensive a very real option for learner drivers in Newark. 2
