Karol’s Korner Back to work again!

Having had a wonderful holiday and feeling so relaxed after it, and now the rain! Rain, rain and more rain!

Great weather if you are a duck! By the time you read this its probably sunny again, and the memory of the rain will have gone!

I have to say it was very strange not having internet while I was away, a relic of a bygone era, and far from being relaxing, I found it very stressful, how do you cope when you are without internet?

Kids Pass Kids Pass gives you 40% off cinema tickets and money off a range of restaurants and days out. You can even get discounts on holidays with Haven, Butlins, Eurocamp and other companies. The pass costs around £40 a year, but a month’s trial costs just £1.

Think small Check whether your local amateur dramatics society is performing any plays suitable for families. Smaller venues are a lot cheaper than well-known theatres and young children really won’t care if an actor is an award-winning thespian or Mark from the corner shop. Older kids could even join the drama youth group. Don’t discount larger theatres altogether, however, as some offer discounts during the summer holidays. Children can attend a host of London shows for free during August’s Kids Week, as long as they’re accompanied 6

The Perfect Family Day Out Saturday brings a feast of sport with children’s races, athletics including the spectacle of the 10-mile road race and track cycling. Heckington is celebrating 150 years of cycling at the show this year- almost certainly the oldest cycle race in the world. Watch out for penny farthing racing as well as a national championship competition on a track that has seen Olympic stars such as Laura Kenny and Victoria Pendleton compete for glory.

This Olympian theme continues through Show Sunday with national standard show jumping which includes the prestigious Area Trial.

These fill the ring between some great headline attractions. New for 2019 is Horse Boarding which (a bit scarily) looks to combine the X Games with the Epsom Derby who will star on Saturday along with the Silver Stars Parachute Display team – skydivers are

always a favourite but keep an eye on times as when they are down, they are down. Sunday sees the return of the Big Wheelie Fire Engine promising as ever noise and some real engagement with the younger visitors.

Heckington Show would not be complete without big traditional show contributions. Livestock classes bring scores of Sheep and Cattle, Donkeys and Heavy (Shire) Horses and as ever our layout gives visitors a chance to get close, have a chat with the owners and see what it takes to prepare a show champion. The largest marquee at the village end of the grounds still hosts a horticultural show which prizes for entry categories ranging from perfect produce to bake-off standard cakes to art both floral and painted in format. Every part is a show in itself yet you’re sure to find so much more around the grounds – food and drink, living history displays, all-day music, a

dog show, fairground rides, antiques, rural crafts, activities and of course trade stands. You can buy everything from a garden sculpture and fashion clothing to a new car or garden shed.

The show has a very comprehensive website www.heckingtonshow.org.uk where you can get a full picture and buy tickets for either/both days. You can also find out how to take part – not everyone can win, but you can still say I made that, that time is my personal best, that’s one of our herd, we trained that dog – and thousands of visitors can enjoy your contribution. It’s a weekend that brings people together - family and friends, visitors, competitors, organisers and helpers - all in one rather amazing Lincolnshire village. There must be something here that our politicians and leaders might learn from – let’s hope it doesn’t take them 152 years to realise.

Hair looking a bit ‘meh’?

If you’re constantly reapplying hand lotion because your hands feel dry, it may be time to swap to a gentler, more natural handwash. Personally, I have to avoid any with sodium lauryl sulphate, as it makes my hands so dry and cracked they end up bleeding. I tend to use bars of soap instead, but also like vegetable oil-based liquid soaps, such as those by The Castilian Soap Company.

Next, function: do you want heating, lighting, plug sockets and maybe a kitchenette or bathroom? If so, consider how you will connect utilities.

Insulation is vital (think walls, ÂżRRUV DQG URRI LI WKH VSDFH is going to be used beyond the summer months), and so is good security. If anything valuable is going to be stored, glass windows (perhaps even double glazed) are better than plastic, and a sturdy door with a proper lock will be necessary.

Fine and Points: Five Motoring Misdeeds As a motorist, it can be easy to pick up a few bad habits over the years, but youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be forgiven for not having a good look at the Highway Code on a regular basis.
