Employees – what are YOUR rights? As an employee do you know what your statutory rights are? Of course, it depends what is in your Contract of Employment, or your Companies’ policies to know exactly what your terms and conditions are, however these should not be any worse or lower than what you are entitled to as set out in current legislation. We have set out a list of employment rights below (this is just a legal overview) if you wish to receive more details please feel free to contact us. • To receive statutory paid holiday of 28 days per year, (this can include the 8 public and bank holidays) • To receive statutory sick pay (SSP) – if your average weekly earnings are £111 or over this is £88.45/week • To receive Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), first 6 weeks is 90% of weekly earnings with the next 33 weeks at £139.58* • To receive Statutory Paternity pay (SPP) - 2 weeks at £139.58* • To receive Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP) - 39 weeks at £139.58* *(or 90% of weekly earnings if lower) • To work on average no more than 48 hours per week, with minimum rest periods & breaks • To protection from being required to work on Sundays • To receive National Minimum Wage (NMW) – rates effective from 1 October 2014 n Adult rate £6.50 hour n Youth rate (18 – 20) £5.13 hour n 16-17 year olds £3.79 hour n Apprentice rate £2.73 hour Where accommodation is provided to the employee by the employer, the amount that can be offset against the NMW is £5.08 per day • To receive itemised pay slips/statements • Not to receive unlawful deductions from pay • To receive pay during suspension on medical grounds • To receive equal pay • Pregnant employees – to take reasonable paid time off for antenatal appointments and to take 52 weeks Statutory Maternity Leave • Employees in a qualifying relationship – to take (unpaid) time off to accompany a pregnant women to up to 2 ante-natal

appointments of up to 6.5 hours each Emergency time off (unpaid) to care for a dependant To receive (unpaid) time off for public duties To receive time off to perform the duties of a safety representative To receive paid time off to study, if aged 16 or 27 and has not attained a certain standard of education To a safe system of work (health & safety policy, information & training, first aid facilities & risk assessments) If a part time worker to be treated no less favourably than comparable full-timers To be accompanied during formal disciplinary & grievance meetings by a fellow worker or Trade Union Rep, (this does not include

investigatory meetings) • Not to be dismissed for raising a health & safety complaint • Not to be dismissed for asserting a statutory right • Not to be dismissed because of pregnancy or childbirth • Not to be dismissed for refusing to undertake work in a shop or betting agency on Sundays (this does not apply to those employed to work only on Sundays) • Not to be dismissed as a direct result of a business transfer. This list only covers some of your statutory rights, as limited editorial cover means we can’t list every right. Similarly we haven’t gone into detail about every right or what, if any, qualifying service you may require. This is just to give you an insight into what statutory rights an employee has. To finish with, I can’t go without mentioning that the newly elected Conservative government have not hung around! Under the Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Action 2015 the following changes were brought into force last month on the 26 May 2015. • Zero hours contract – exclusivity clauses in zero hours contracts are now unenforceable. Zero hours contracts (those with no guaranteed hours of work) are still allowed but employees are free to work for other employers if they wish to do so. • National Minimum Wage from now on the financial penalty for failure to pay the NMW will be 100 % of the arrears owed to each worker to whom a notice of underpayment relates, subject to a maximum of £20,000 per individual worker. See you next month – which will be our last article for the time being, however don’t forget we are always here to provide HR support and advice to employers and employees alike. Help is only a phone call or email away. In the meantime, why not visit our website or pop in to our office for a coffee and chat.

Safe as Mouses

How technology can keep us safe at home & when we travel

Humanity could probably survive without LED barbecue lights or USB coffee cup warmers. But technology can help to keep us safe as well as keep us pampered, and a growing army of gadgets is designed to do just that. One of the most interesting safety gadgets is the £89 Nest Protect, a smart smoke detector. The Protect can tell the difference between burnt toast and a serious problem, and it can warn you of problems by sending a message to your phone. The Nest Protect is part of a growing trend of home automation, with both Google DQG $SSOH HQFRXUDJLQJ ÀUPV WR make devices that connect to our phones and help keep us safe. That doesn’t just mean sounding smoke alarms and keeping an eye on our houses. It can also mean keeping your kids safe. The My Buddy Tag (£39) is a smartwatch that alerts you if your child starts to wander off, or if it’s submerged in water for more than ten seconds. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and you can have more than one tag if you’re looking after more than one child. Products such as the Cuff 6

smart bracelet (from around £40 via the US) are designed WR VKDUH QRWLÀFDWLRQV IURP \RXU phone, but they also have an alert mode that enables you to contact friends, family or colleagues in an emergency without having to reach for your phone. The US$120 Guardian Angel is based on a similar idea but takes a different approach: if you’re feeling uncomfortable you give it a little squeeze and it calls your phone so you can pretend you’ve been called away. Expect to see lots more such products as the interest in wearable technology increases this year, especially now the Apple Watch is on sale: developers are already working on health, safety and security apps for Apple’s wearable wonder. If you’ve ever left the house and realised you’d left something switched on, technology can help with that too. Belkin’s WeMo (from about £35) are internetconnected switches that you can automate - for example you can set heaters to go on and off according to the weather forecast or make music start playing if a WeMo with a motion detector spots movement. They also enable

you to remotely switch off anything you’d left on by mistake. Fitting your house with a bunch of WeMo switches isn’t cheap, but the price of this kind of product is already falling fast. It’s just a matter of time before internetconnected switches are almost as cheap as their traditional equivalents. Gadgets can keep you safe on the move, too. The Blaze Laserlight is £125 before you start adding accessories, but it might just save your life. It’s a waterproof, USB-chargeable bike light that uses a laser to project an image of a bike six metres in front of you. That means it warns pedestrians and drivers that you’re near, eradicating the blind spots that result in so many cycling injuries (and bumped pedestrians). LED lights that make bike wheels look like circular neon signs and paint that makes bikes shine brightly in the dark will go on sale later this year too. Images left to right: Nest Protect smart smoke alarm; My Buddy Tag smartwatch for children; Guardian Angel safety jewellery; Blaze Laserlight bicycle safety light

Local Independent shops make a town interesting and different. I personally dislike visiting some of the larger clone towns, which could be the same as any other town in the UK. Why bother I think to myself – there’s nothing unique about it and if I want to shop in the chains, I can do that online and save myself the trouble of trying to park! That’s where Newark comes in……. as a firm favorite…. There’s a wealth of independent

Denise at Dominoes. After spending a lovely half an hour browsing all her wonderful array, I finally settled on a pheasant doorstop, which I have to tell you was such a hit that the whole brides family asked where it came from and wanted one each. When I need advice as to the best way to send a parcel to the States, Bob at the Main Post Office, in Paxton’s Court, were only too happy to ensure that I sent it in the most reasonably priced way and that it got there on time. Advice like this is priceless. Shop Owners can become great friends and knowing that you can ask for help can be the difference between making a costly mistake and a huge success. There’s a price for this you may say – and yes in some ways there is – we all need to support our local independents. They aren’t more expensive than chains; they have a much better level of knowledge in most cases, they are happy to go the extra mile to make sure you are a happy customer, and why is that? Local shops rely on reputation, its important to them that you have a good experience, the owners are often there themselves and will go the extra mile to make sure you have a good shopping experience. So what’s the catch? Well we have to support our local independents …. If we want to keep Newark an interesting and vibrant community, then we need to spend our money locally. Spending just an extra £5 per month will bring over a million pounds a year into Newark, - visit the local theatre, eat out in Newark, and buy your gifts and clothes here… ..you will love the difference it makes.

Home & Interiors Glorious Georgian

You don’t have to live in a 250-year-old house to enjoy the timeless elegance of *HRUJLDQ VW\OH 5HÀQHG DQG uncluttered, its symmetry, proportion and classicism looks good in all kinds of homes, says Katherine Sorrell

By Katherine Sorrell

Did you know that it was the Georgians who made us modern? During the century or so following the ascent of George I in 1714, our towns and cities, homes and gardens, and even our leisure time were transformed, and the inexorable rise of popular culture began. Perhaps it is part of a trend away from pared-down minimalism in favour of bolder colours, decorative surfaces and more intricate shapes, or perhaps it is simply the appeal of classic elegance – either way, it is not surprising that we ÀQG *HRUJLDQ OLIH DQG WLPHV and especially its architecture and interiors, utterly fascinating. If you can’t afford Georgian antiques, look for Victorian or Edwardian replicas, and use loose covers to conceal unsuitable modern pieces, as was the fashion at the time. As for fabrics, cottons and linens became extremely popular and a host of beautiful printed and woven patterns appeared, many of which are still available, including chintzes featuring large, bright Ă RUDOV EROG VWULSHV VSUD\ RI Ă RZHUV &KLQHVH VFHQHV DQG the monochrome images of toile de Jouy. On walls, either wood panelling or block-printed wallpaper would be perfect, or else look for appropriate paint colours from the many historic ranges on offer today. At the start of the Georgian era homes were very poorly lit, but by the turn of the century there had been great advances in technology. Gas and oil lighting – despite being prone to the occasional explosion – was the latest thing for those who could afford it, though candles were still the norm for most. This meant that decorative light ÀWWLQJV EHFDPH IDVKLRQDEOH ZKLFK UHà HFWHG OLJKW SUHWWLO\ in ornamental mirrors. A delight in the heart of the countryside Out and about and looking for a good place to eat? A little off the beaten track, but well worth the visit is a hidden gem “Shrub & Grub” known well by the locals, who have tried hard to keep it a secret! But the words out, and now when you are looking for that special tasty place to try then a visit to Shrub & Grub should be high on your list. Set in an old farm building and with bags of atmosphere with lovely views across open parkland and gently grazing Lincolnshire Reds, Shrub & Grub serve the area with delicious food, incredible pastries and artisan style breads, baked on the premises as well as delicious home made main meals made

with locally produced ingredients and deliciously tender. Outside is the Shrub part, where you can browse through the range of plants and shrubs and

find something equally unususal & lovely such as chocolate mint to take home. Run by the lovely Alan and his equally charming son in law Nathan, the Packing Room cafes ethos can be summed up in Alans words ” Like you we don’t compromise on food quality. So we work together with like minded food businesses that have quality and community at their heart.” Shrub & Grub is located on the outskirts of the village of Thorpe Latimer, near to Sleaford, approx a half hours drive from Newark

Summer’s coming! With the school summer holidays fast approaching, it’s always a good idea to be prepared with ideas of things to do and places to go. Why not pay a visit to your nearest Tourist Information Centre and find out what’s happening in the local area over the next few months. As well as information on all the attractions in the area, we keep a list of all the special events taking place and update it weekly so you won’t have to miss a thing! One of the many events you can look forward to this summer is a Living History event at Newark Castle to celebrate the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta. This weekend-long event will be the first in a series of events remembering King John, who died at Newark Castle on 18th October 1216. Also at Newark Castle, the hugely popular Sunday Band Concerts start on July 5th with Newark

Town Band. So, pack a picnic basket and rug and enjoy a laidback, sunny (fingers crossed!) afternoon with some wonderful traditional music. There are some great Outdoor Theatre productions at Newark Castle and Kelham Hall to look forward to in July and August. Starting with “Jane Eyre”at Kelham Hall on 4th July, and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on 7th August. Newark Castle is also hosting a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Wednesday 15th July by “The Handlebards” - four men cycling

around the country carrying all their set, props, costumes and camping equipment on their bikes. A new event this year is “Books at the Castle”- the first Newark Book fair with something for everyone including talks, activities and book signings with some of the UK’s leading authors. There are lots of activities for the children this summer too. The Grove Leisure Centre will be holding Activity Days and The Palace will be offering workshops for all you aspiring young actors.

See the Newark & Sherwood District Council website for ideas www.newark-sherwooddc.gov.uk/leisure/holidayactivities Whatever your interest, there is something to look forward to this summer, so come along to the T.I.C. to find out what’s going on!

“Come on kids, there’s lots to see and do. Your adventure is just beginning!” Explore the Rodeo Corral Indoor Play Area and climb aboard the Rocky Mountain Railroad, but hold onto your hats folks, those pesky bandits are popping up everywhere. Be careful not to wake the dragon as you enter the Lollipoppet castle with all its smells of candy. Then it’s on to the Tractor Ride for a trip around the countryside. Grab those bows and arrows and climb aboard the Robin Hood Ride to join Robin and his merry men, then it’s onto Crash Landings – our fantastic four storey indoor play area and café. Time to take to the Jolly Pirate Ride – but you better watch out, for who knows were those wicked pirates are lying in wait with a surprise or two! 44

But no one can be scared of the delightful little friends whose lovely scenes lead us through the seasons on to the magical Sleigh

Ride through Santa’s traditional winter wonderland. When you’re ready for a break, take the kids for a snack or a treat in one of our cafes or shops. Also don’t forget, we’re open at Christmas, so come along and ride our fantastic night before Christmas ride before visiting Santa in his Lovely home and receive a free gift for all children aged 2 to 10 years.

Divine Dining in Newark The Ram has a colourful history of offering the perfect place for people to meet and enjoy good food and wine, right back to the 15th century when a coaching inn opened on the site where the current 18th century Georgian building stands. After years of standing empty The Ram has been lovingly renovated and rejuvenated, restoring it to its former elegant Georgian glory, in the heart of the historic town of Newark. The Bar & Brasserie has an air of Georgian coaching inn with a bespoke and elegant twist, serving a wide selection of drinks from real ales through to fine wines. The menu is mouthwateringly tempting, offering choice for all diners on any occasion. We had a fabulous meal on a busy Friday evening, enjoying a perfectly cooked steak and delicious seafood. “Our menu, just like our interior, blends our heritage with our future. The result is a stunning selection of elegant dishes” “Our talented head chef’s menu is elegant and stylish yet wholesome and delicious. Nathan Jackson has created dishes full of flavour, blending an array of traditional favourites with cutting-edge modern flavours. “ This stylish brasserie is one of the finest places to eat in the historic town of Newark-onTrent.

There has been a need in Newark for this level of dining and finally The Ram has fulfilled the niche.

Whatever the occasion, The Ram’s dining experience was created for you. The Ballroom is the elegant function room at The Ram. It evokes all the splendour and grace of its Edwardian heritage with a modern, contemporary twist and was designed by award winning designers Jamie Hempsall Ltd. Perfect for celebrations, formal gatherings and meetings for up to 100 guests, the room offers a spacious environment, private bar and views of the parish church spire through ample sash windows. Alternatively, for smaller groups of up to 30 there is a private dining area on the ground floor with elegant decor, situated just off the main restaurant and with easy access to the bar and outside courtyard.

The elegant interior is matched by the professionalism of the staff and the lovely touches such as blankets in a basket for those chilly evenings when you want to sit outside.

A New Era for Volkwagen in Newark Over the last 6 months JCT Newark have been undergoing a major revamp of their Volkswagen Business on the Northern Road, spending ≤ of a million pounds on the redevelopment, to ensure the branch is able to showcase the range of cars and allow clients to enjoy a relaxing coffee shop style environment whilst either waiting for their servicing or talking about a new vehicle with one of the specialised customer advisors. JCT600 started out in 1946, based in Yorkshire and the original founder of the group, Jack Tordoff, built the company up from a single garage to become one of the largest privately owned independent motor groups, representing 19 franchises, operating from 50 dealerships across the North of England with an annual turnover in excess of £1 Billion, representing prestigious brands such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Lotus and

56

even Bentley and Aston Martin. Jack’s philosophy even back then was to put customers first, then, they will do the same for you. JCT600 continues to hold to this tradition of putting the customer at the heart of all they do. The rewards are then invested back in the business – in developing first class staff, delivering first-rate service, in state of the art facilities. To Jack and his successor John, the JCT600 family philosophy extends far beyond the Tordoff name, to every single member of the JCT600 team, and to the customers themselves. It’s a unique belief and it provides a unique experience. Back to today and the Newark branch is a key part of the Groups Volkswagen division

having access to over 500 Daswelt approved Used Volkswagen vehicles as well as an extensive display of New Cars. We also provide a full range of vehicles servicing, repair and MOT services. Paul Hague the Head of Business said, "We are delighted with the improvements that have been made and more importantly the customer feedback being received. The investment is a mark of our commitment to customers, staff and Newark itself." Why not call to arrange a test drive in one of our fabulous range of vehicles or simply pop along and see the improvements for yourself over a coffee. You will be sure to find knowledgeable, friendly and helpful staff to guide you through.

Pratt & Gelsthorpe a family tradition to be proud of There can’t be many people in Newark who haven’t heard of Pratt & Gelsthorpe, which is approaching 100 years of trading in Newark, but how many people knew the firm was once responsible for providing the town with electricity? Looking back at the family firms history, it was started in 1919 by Bert Gelsthorpe and Frank Pratt, who set out on a new venture with capital of just £50, and described themselves as motor and electrical engineers. Their first premises were a stones throw from their current showroom, at 8-10 Baldertongate, and their first agency was for Douglas and Ariel motorcycles and John Bull tyres and accessories – most people then owned motorcycles and sidecars. To keep up with the times they expanded into motor cars and maintenance and duly became Austin Dealers in 1928, continuing for 60 years until in January 1988 they became agents for Peugeot. Cars and motorcycles were only one aspect of their only business, during the 1920’s & 30’s they specialised in electrical equipment and were for many years one of the principal generators of electricity in the town, with the benefit of 110 volt DC power via wires running across town from the shop. Even the early Kinema and the Palace theatre were supplied by Pratt & Gelsthorpe who also undertook to supply the Newark Hospital should their own generator break down. P & G supplied the town with electricity right up until the 1940’s. As the demand for an electricity supply in the town grew, so did P & G and they diversified into other areas including retailing 60

the vastly popular new wireless sets. P & G also supplied precison engineered parts during WW2 to the war effort for raising and lowering ailerons on aircraft. Frank Pratt died in 1956 and the business continued under Bert Gelsthopre until 2 years later, his son John joined him, at the age of 17. John went onto become Managing Director and was finally joined by his own son, Richard, in 1987. Today Pratt & Gelsthorpe, still trade from the premises they moved into in Baldertongate in the 1950s, having redeveloped the site in 2010/2011 and now boasting a spacious showroom and a 7 bay servicing centre for repairs and general servicing, on all makes. Further expansion into the scooter market, supplying scooters, clothing and accessories have also added

The name Pratt & Gelsthorpe is synonymous with quality and service. Many car companies traditionally have a high turnover of staff and this has an impact on service, which inevitably suffers. MD Richard Gelsthorpe attributes the company’s lasting success largely to 3 factors“We have extremely loyal and dedicated staff. We are always striving to make sure we are in step with the changing face of the motor trade and last but not least, we have a first class product in the Peugeot vehicles we supply, including the recently launched facelifted 208”

another dimension to the business. The core values of Pratt & Gelsthorpe remain the same now as they did when Bert & Frank started. Managing Director Richard praised his staff and recognizes their dedication. “Many customers have been loyal to P & G for generations, valuing the individual touch offered by a family owned business, and building trusted relationships with members of our team, who always strive to provide the best possible customer service.”
