Karols Korner I hate to be the sensible one!! While we are all basking in this glorious sunshine, please remember sun screen and dogs in hot cars. Is it really the best thing to take your dog out with you in the heat, and definitely DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A CAR, in this weather, as the temperature inside a car heats up very quickly, resulting in heat stroke and distress to your dog. Pretty soon we will all be enjoying all the outdoor events of the summer and keep a look out for our Bumper summer Guide in our next issue for all the best places to be and things to do for the whole family! I have been out and about with Wally and Scarlet, and took a lovely picture of Wally at a show, hope you like it! Have a wonderful June!

HERE COMES SUMMER: TECH FOR OUTDOOR LIVING It’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which even the UK usually manages to get through without any blizzards. Who knows, we might even get a long hot summer this time – and if we do, technology is happy to help. 1 If you’re planning to party on the summer equinox, the longest day of the year, it’s worth getting some long-lasting gadgets such as the UE Boom 2 portable speaker. It’s loud but not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s waterproof because it’s sold in Britain. At around £93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours of tunes from a single charge. It’s a really great speaker for 2 outdoor entertaining.

effects and to do so from a phone or tablet, and you can now mix 16 million different colours outdoors too. The catch, inevitably, is cost: the wall-mountable Lily spotlight is about £260 and the pedestal lamp around £125. It might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’ lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs are widely available for a lot less than Philips chargers and we’d expect the same to happen with outdoor lighting too. Don’t try and cut corners with normal Hue EXOEV LQ VWDQGDUG ODPS ÀWWLQJV XQOHVV WKRVH ÀWWLQJV DUH ODUJH DQG SURSHUO\ waterproof. They might not work anyway: your home’s exterior walls may block the connection between the lights and the Hue hub, which has to be connected to your internet router.

How Gardens Have Changed! Watching my grandsons play in the garden, I realised how different it is from the garden I used to romp around in sixty years ago. Our south-west London estate had relatively huge gardens, if it had been built today it would have had twice the houses and smaller gardens. My parents’ youths were engulfed by WW2, rationing and “dig for victory”, so twothirds of our garden was for growing food. The veg patch with its rows of potatoes, beans, cabbages and salad plants with rhubarb crowns, gooseberries and blackcurrants was bordered by apple trees with only a few traditional flowers like chrysanthemums, roses and nasturtiums. As children, we assisted and adopted patches to grow our own contributions. In retirement dad had a greenhouse for tomatoes which were stored with bananas in brown paper bags to ripen if it was a poor summer! One-year, mum made vats of green tomato chutney rather than waste a crop so late even bags and bananas couldn’t save it. Dad built us a large sand-pit to play in and the almond tree in the front lawn was the goalpost in many neighbourhood football games. Not everyone had such practical gardens but most had vegetable beds and very few had gardens geared towards leisure. Weekends saw most people working in their gardens and there was sometimes extra pocket money for helpers. 8

Today, gardens seem smaller and supermarkets provide a wide range of cheap produce that wouldn’t thrive in British gardens. I don’t know anyone on our estate who grows food (beyond pots of herbs), most gardens are geared towards low maintenance and leisure time – paved, gravelled or decked with small flower beds. Patios, barbeque areas and parasols dominate in gardens that are for relaxing and entertaining not growing. Whilst occasionally nostalgic for the garden where dad us

to build cane tepees for runner beans and for his rhubarb which we split and planted in every home I lived in until I was in my 50’s. My garden has also been turned over to leisure and low maintenance, a small patio and lawn, flower borders and low maintenance fences in place of hedges. We spend sunny days relaxing or mowing the lawn but it’s mainly the grand-children and the birds who use the garden now and in honesty we prefer it that way – it allows for hobbies and leisure activities that my parents would never have found time for.

Finance

By Ann Haldon

How Much Money Will You Need For Your Retirement? tax and house insurance. Then you can factor in the cost of emergency repairs such as boiler or car breakdowns. The total is the sum you’ll need to cover using a guaranteed income.

There’s a general consensus in the press that, to live comfortably in retirement, you need a pension of at least £20,000 a year. Where you live obviously makes a difference to the costs, but in general, people’s idea of what constitutes a ‘comfortable’ retirement also differs.

After this, consider the items that aren’t essential, but that you wouldn’t necessarily want to live without – a TV package, for example, or high speed broadband. Lastly, factor in the activities that would be nice to enjoy, such as eating out regularly or going to the theatre.

So, if like many people you’re unsure how much you’ll need in retirement, how can you find out? The first step is to look at your essential expenditure such as mortgage or rent payments, food and heating, and only then think about the ‘nice to have’ aspects of daily life that do make it more comfortable.

Pension forecasts and statements Once you’ve calculated your expenditure, you can obtain a state pension forecast from the gov.uk website. Work and personal pension statements should be available by phone or in writing from your pension provider(s), and there are also a number of online ‘pension calculators’ that give you an idea of how much you might receive.

Focus on your expenditure initially Rather than obtaining pension statements and forecasts first, it’s a good idea to calculate how much you’ll need for the essentials in retirement, taking into account what your circumstances might be in the future rather than now. If you pay your bills by direct debit, have a look at your bank statements for regular household outgoings such as mortgage, utilities, council 10

Don’t forget any benefits that you could be eligible for in retirement – pension credit, for example. If you have savings or investments, you can also include these in your income projections. What expenses will you save in retirement? • If you’re currently supporting your family or making

mortgage repayments, these expenses may not be relevant once you retire. Not having to commute to work is also a significant cost saving for some. • Many people choose to downsize their property in retirement – if this is on the cards for you, it would release a lump sum of cash to pay off any debts you have remaining, invest for an income, or to pay future house maintenance costs, for example. • Downsizing might also naturally free up money on a monthly basis, thanks to the reduced heating bills and maintenance issues of a smaller property. So now you’ve got all the figures you need, how do you access your pension pot when the time comes? Pension freedoms The pension reforms that were introduced in April 2015 give you much greater choice in the way you access your pension pot. Prior to this, an annuity had to be purchased which provided a guaranteed income for life. Although this option remains available and is commonly used, it’s no longer the only one. With professional pension advice, you can maximise your pension savings whilst also ensuring you avoid the significant pension pitfalls that now exist. Pension mistakes that could jeopardise your retirement Do you have enough ‘qualifying

You can check for any gaps in your National Insurance record by requesting the state pension forecast mentioned earlier, available via the gov.uk website. Could you outlive your pension savings? It’s possible that you could outlive your pension savings if you take out too much money too early. if other external circumstances could drain your savings over time, so it pays to be cautious with all your estimates and assumptions. Beware pension scams One of the downsides of the new pension freedoms is that con artists have been able to swindle people out of their KDUG HDUQHG SHQVLRQV 6FDPV VXFK DV WKRVH RIIHULQJ WD[ IUHH transfers to dubious investment schemes, or suggested legal ‘loopholes’ that allow you to avoid paying tax, have been widespread in recent years. Bad money management Life expectancy is increasing all the time, and although you could gain access to your entire pension, without managing the money efficiently, you could also lose the whole lot.

An additional issue is that you don’t know how long you’ll live for, whether you’ll experience health problems in the future, or

Helping Your Dog Deal with the Heat of Summer

Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat through their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is often fatal.

PETS

Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include:

• You don’t over-exercise them, or take your dog out during the hottest part of the day.

• • • • • • •

What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the panting has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a matter of urgency, even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of time, and fast action can save their life even if you think HYHU\WKLQJ LV ÀQH www.telegraph.co.uk/pets/news-features/ keep-dog-cool-summer-heat www.metro.co.uk/2017/06/20/how-to-keepyour-dog-safe-in-the-heatwave-6722194

Rapid breathing Heavy panting Lethargy Agitation or disorientation Drooling Vomiting and/or diarrhoea Fitting/seizures

Preventing a disaster Being aware that your dog is very susceptible to heat stroke is a major factor in preventing it. You should make sure that:

• They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day. • Your dog has ready access So how do you prevent heat to shade, and plenty of cool stroke, what are the symptoms, drinking water. and what can you do to help?

A Vets Voice By Mark Lainchbury

We are all trying to cut down on the plastic packaging in our lives, but most items purchased from the supermarkets have some form of non biodegradable wrapping. It’s comforting to see that several farm shops just use brown paper bags or even ask if the customer can put loose goods in their own shoppers...... Certainly a move in the right direction. There has been much publicity showing how disastrous polythene and plastics are for the animal kingdom and our own domestic pets can be included in this. Although the canine digestive system is tough, any bits of plastic that are ingested can prove problematic. If foods are thrown away in the plastic wrappers, a dog who can sniff, lick and eat will consume all sorts which would probably put a human in intensive care ! The plastic however can not break down resulting sometimes in surgery. As the weather becomes warmer, there can be decaying foodstuffs or a deteriorating carcase which some animals can’t resist..... These gastroenteric problems can usually be resolved with simple medication and a strict chat with the animal concerned ! However, the plastics can be a completely different scenario.......So please be vigilant when Fido is in scavenge mode and with us all trying to reduce the non biodegradables in life perhaps the future will be a little more organic. Horoscopes by Russell Grant ARIES

LEO

March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

The New Moon on the 13th invites you to make a sales pitch, begin a social media campaign or start a writing project. It's possible you'll leave one job for another on the 28th, when the Full Moon marks a turning point in your career. Accepting a position with heavy responsibilities will work well for you.

A cutting-edge collaboration will be more challenging than expected on the 13th, due to a tense New Moon. There won't be enough money in the budget to do this project justice. As a result, the team will start squabbling. The Full Moon on the 28th prompts you to reconsider how you are using your time, money and energy.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st On the 13th, the New Moon will tempt you to enter into a business or romantic relationship. Don't jump into anything too quickly. Your feelings are muddled and with good reason. The Full Moon on the 28th brings a nice little boost to your bank balance, but you'll have to spend it on some expensive necessities.

TAURUS

VIRGO

CAPRICORN

April 21st - May 21st

August 24th - Sept 23rd

December 22nd - Jan 20th

A fresh moneymaking opportunity will arrive on the 13th, courtesy of the New Moon. You will enjoy the work involved, but your colleagues will be less than impressive. The Full Moon on the 28th will find you collecting a degree or certificate. Alternatively, you could have a piece of written work published. You've been working hard to acquire expert knowledge.

A career opportunity on the 13th isn't all that it is cracked up to be. The New Moon is urging you to make a job change, but there will be hidden elements to this job that are very unpleasant. On the 28th, the Full Moon will mark a turning point in a romance or creative project. You might decide this relationship or venture is just too much trouble.

Starting work on a project will be cause for alarm in mid-June. Someone who isn't clear how this work will be performed will give conflicting instructions on the 13th, due to a deceptive New Moon. The Full Moon on the 28th will invite you to do something special for yourself. Enjoy a spa treatment, holiday or afternoon nap.

GEMINI

LIBRA

AQUARIUS

May 22nd - June 21st

September 24th - Oct 23rd

January 21st - Feb 19th

You're ready to make a fresh start, but don't make any changes that will compromise your professional prospects. Getting a radical hairstyle or adopting a fashionable look could put you out of the running for an impressive job. On the 28th, your deepest feelings will come out in the open. It will no longer be possible to hide your passion, anger or resentment.

An opportunity to travel, publish or teach will arrive on or around the 13th, thanks to an adventurous New Moon. There will be strings attached to this opportunity, so beware. The Full Moon on the 28th creates drama on the family front. A stern relative may discourage your plans to become more independent.

The New Moon on the 13th opens the door to a passionate relationship. Beware of trying to buy someone's affection. On the 28th, you will be challenged to let go of an old grudge. This doesn't mean you have to forgive someone who performed a terrible injustice. It does mean you must train yourself to release your anger and resentment.

CANCER

SCORPIO

PISCES

June 22nd - July 23rd

October 24th - Nov 22nd

Feb 20th - March 20th

On the 13th, you'll feel the urge to rest, relax and recuperate from a busy social season. Before you get too comfortable, you will have to attend to a legal or business matter. Giving a court deposition or going on an overseas trip for work will keep you busy towards the middle of June. The Full Moon on the 28th brings a partnership or contract to completion.

An investment opportunity arriving at mid-June is too good to be true. The New Moon will tempt you to back this exciting venture on the 13th, but all is not what it seems. On the 28th, the Full Moon will prompt you to say what you see. Confront someone who is taking advantage of their position. You're the only one brave enough to challenge their abusive behaviour.

Finding a place to live will be more challenging than expected. The New Moon on the 13th invites you to lower your expectations about living spaces. The Full Moon on the 28th could cause you to break away from a group that no longer meets your needs. An influential member will be personally insulted by this defection, but it can't be helped.

Gardening Creative Containers

by Pippa Greenwood

and tough but looks great.

Colourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull back yard or a gloomy terrace or patio. But rather than just using containers from the garden centre, why not make some wackier, more unusual planters? With a little bit of imagination and ingenuity, it is amazing what you can achieve.

32

Acrylic paints are a great way to colour a boring or discoloured container, and they’re quick drying too. Go for a single colour to match in with existing garden features, or even the colour of your front door or window frames. Alternatively, create a pattern of wild, fantastic colours and make your own planted-up art gallery. Get creative with some mosaic tiles from your local craft or hobby store. Covering a container may take a while, but it’ll be a lot of fun and if time is short

The bigger the tyre, the bigger the planter – from wheelbarrow to tractor, there’s lots of potential. Make a deeper planter by stacking two or more tyres RQ WRS RI HDFK RWKHU ÀOO ZLWK compost and get planting. For a really striking effect, SODQW WUDLOLQJ à RZHUV VXFK DV trailing geraniums around the edges so that they cascade over the sides. Try planting up an aged wheelbarrow: it’s great for a larger display or even for permanent planting, and as long as the wheel still goes around you can even move the display around to brighten up different areas of your garden! If there are no holes in the pan of the barrow, make sure you place a layer of gravel or stones in the base so that the compost does not

Use them, by all means, but transform that boring plastic by wrapping it in hessian. Available in a range of colours from classic pale brown to reds, greens and blues, it’s weather tolerant

Plastic pots can also be made more exciting with a bit of planting around WKH VLGHV %HIRUH \RX ÀOO the pot with compost, cut holes just over an inch in diameter at regular intervals around the sides of the pot. There you have it: you’ve created a planter with great side-planting holes, perfect for small bedding plants, allowing you make a tower RI à RZHU SRZHU -XVW ÀOO ZLWK compost to the base of the lowermost holes, add plants through the holes, add more compost to the next layer of holes and continue upwards, ÀQLVKLQJ RII ZLWK SOHQW\ RI colour on the top.

you could always just make a mosaic rim. Use rich colours to make a Moroccan style pot. When winter comes, its best to bring a mosaic pot into a frost-free spot to ensure it weathers the worst of the weather in style, or if you can get hold of the grouting adhesive used for swimming pools that should make it more weather resistant.

Fill the foot and ankle area with gravel or grit for drainage and to make the wellie more stable and less likely to fall over, add compost and plant up the top. You can also use acrylic paints to jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is totally dry before you start planting. Top Travels by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

New sandals and a bikini aren’t the only holiday essentials you’ll want to add to your shopping list this month. We’ve found plenty of travel-friendly health and beauty goodies to tempt you, whether you’re planning to backpack through Thailand, sightsee in Italy, or go camping in Cornwall. Towels, bucket and spade, Kindle, water, snacks…beach bags can get pretty heavy. Try decanting your suntan lotion into a smaller bottle, or pick up a travel sized one. Green People’s Scent Free Sun Lotion has an SPF of 30 and is gentle enough for all the family to use. It’s water-resistant and packed with skin-loving natural ingredients such as green tea, olive oil and avocado extract. The full size 100ml tube is £14.50, while the 30ml travel size is £6.50 from www.greenpeople.co.uk. Marks and Spencer’s also have lots of travel sized products to choose from, 38

including this Nature’s Ingredients Lemon Shower Gel. The 50ml size costs just £1.50 and is perfect for a short break away. Planning a longer break? A bar of soap takes up less space in your suitcase than a bottle of shower gel. Check out TK Maxx for luxury bars at a budget price, or treat yourself to the gorgeously scented Geranium, Ylang Ylang & Neroli Soap by Cole & Co, which costs £4 plus delivery from www.coleandco.com. Hotel bathrooms never seem to have enough cupboard space. About Desire Laser Clinic If you are thinking about Laser Hair removal, you will have your own very personal reasons for doing so. Everyone’s story is different, but let me tell you mine. I hope it will give you an insight into why I set up this business and the technology I use. For me, it all started in my teens. As I grew older, I became increasingly embarrassed at how hairy my legs were. When I was about 16, I started getting waxed. After each session, I always had the same dilemma: should I shave them every few days, or let the hair grow so I could get them waxed again? After each waxing, I would usually have smooth legs for less than a week before I could feel the stubble coming through again. At 21, I joined the RAF. I ended up becoming even more self conscious because the way of life often meant using communal showers in the gym and sharing rooms during training or whilst

attending courses. I used to cringe at the thought of going away and generally being in close proximity to other people. I very rarely wore skirts outside of work as I was always worried in case anybody accidentally brushed against me and felt the stubble. By the time I reached my thirties, I finally decided I had had enough. I started researching Laser Hair Removal, which wasn’t anywhere near as well known as it is now. I decided to give it a try. I used to travel from Norwich to London every 6 weeks for treatment. I found a clinic which used a Lumenis machine and was absolutely amazed at the difference after the first treatment. After the sixth treatment my legs were completely hair free. I have however known other people who have tried laser hair reduction but not achieved great results. This is why it is so important to use the very best machines.

Having been so pleased with my own treatment, when I set up Desire Laser Clinic, I made a point of sourcing a Lumenis machine. I have been delighted to find the technology has improved even further since I had my treatments. The machines are now much quicker and the process is virtually pain free. I know from my own experience how distressing it can be to have a problem with unwanted hair in any area of the body, and how inconvenient and annoying it can be to have to keep shaving or waxing. Now, thanks to modern technology, there is a far better way to reduce hair permanently without having to pay for continuous top-up treatments. I can help you reduce your problem hair once and for all.

Getting to the root of the problem By using the latest Lumenis Lightsheer® clinical technology we offer permanent medically approved methods of hair removal. Benefits of laser hair removal No more shaving or waxing! Health Screenings: What’s Available? physical abnormalities. Soon after birth, babies are given a physical examination and a blood spot ’heel prick’ test for several inherited diseases including cystic ÀEURVLV SOXV D hearing test before 3 months of age.

Screening programmes are designed to identify health problems at an early stage, and the NHS offer many free screening programmes, beginning before we’re born. PREGNANCY AND POSTNATAL SCREENINGS If you’re pregnant, you will usually be offered a blood test for hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis before you’re 10 weeks pregnant. Early treatment reduces the risk of passing infection to your baby. You’ll also be offered screening for thalassaemia and sometimes sickle cell disease before 10 weeks, as it’s important to establish whether you’re a carrier. Screenings for your unborn baby: • 8-14 weeks: a ‘dating scan’. This combines a blood test with an ultrasound scan and can be done alongside your dating scan. • 18-21 weeks: The ‘midpregnancy anomaly scan’, an ultrasound to check for 42

SCREENING FOR TEENS AND ADULTS Diabetics aged 12 and over: the annual diabetic eye test checks for early signs of damage to blood vessels in the retina. Women over 70 can self-refer. Over 55s: In some areas, bowel scope screening to detect bowel cancer is offered. 60 to 74-year olds: Every two years, you’ll be sent a home testing kit called the faecal occult blood (FOB) test. This detects blood in your stool, which indicates further testing is required. Men at age 65: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening can detect dangerous swelling in the aorta. Men over 65 can self-refer.

SCREENING COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Although NHS screenings are offered to everyone eligible, it’s your choice whether to have them. History

How We Fell in Love with Perfume cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume was ‘the sweat of the gods’.

The word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them. 8VHG VLJQLĂ€FDQWO\ DFURVV $VLDQ cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, 44

Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, RUDQJH Ă RZHUV PXVN DQG DORH wood, all boiled in rose petal water. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from à RZHUV DQG SODQWV LQJUHGLHQWV for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.
