Penny’s Korner Can you believe it, June is almost upon us, yikes half way through the year! June marks the anniversary for when my husband and I moved to Newark 3 years ago. We fell in love with Newark however it’s not been an easy time with road closers and shops shutting. Yet there is still much to love about Newark, the unique Royal Market square, bespoke shops , great places to eat & sit watching the world go by. It’s also easy to hop on a train to Lincoln for an enjoyable change of scene. Lots of work is being done behind the scenes to keep our beautiful towns alive and I feel we must show support by shopping & eating locally be it in Newark or Lincoln. Just sit outside enjoying a drink and take in the beautiful buildings we are surrounded by, plus the bespoke shops and keep in mind, by supporting local businesses we get to continue enjoying our beautiful towns.

Use Locally - Issue 31 June 2019 could also look for ‘choose your own adventure’ books, where the story unfolds depending on which paths the reader decides to take.
Encouraging a love of reading According to BookTrust, children who enjoy reading tend to have better literacy skills, increased vocabulary and enhanced general knowledge. Reluctant readers may need some extra help to discover their inner book worm, however. Lead by example Show your child how much you enjoy reading, even if it’s just by ÂżLFNLQJ WKURXJK D FRRNERRN RU burying your head in a magazine. You could also take family trips to the library, give books as gifts and talk to your children about the books you’re both reading. The BookTrust also recommends that parents and children try reading the same book occasionally. You could take turns reading a chapter aloud or you could both read on your own and then discuss what you like and dislike about the book. Let them choose There’s a temptation to guide children towards ‘suitable’ books but try to let your child choose their own. Some may prefer factual books, such as Horrible +LVWRULHV RYHU žFWLRQ 2WKHUV may prefer magazines or short stories that they can dip in and 6

Picture books for older children Picture books aren’t just the preserve of pre-readers. Series such as ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’, ‘Dork Diaries’, ‘Tom Gates’ and ‘The 13 Story Treehouse’ are illustrated books aimed at children aged around seven to 13. Use Locally - Issue 31 June 2019 dementia. :KLOVW PRUH VSHFLžF research needs to be done, experts inside and outside the NHS acknowledge an association between pollution and the neurological changes and decline linked to dementia. • Pollution increases the risk of bladder cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
Clean Air Day Clean Air Day, an annual event coordinated by Global Action Plan, takes place on Thursday 20th June. The campaign’s message for this year is that we all need to work together to reduce pollution, and that small steps make a difference. “Air pollution affects you from \RXU žUVW EUHDWK WR \RXU ODVW as the damage to our health can start when we’re a baby and carry on through into old age,â€? says this year’s mission statement – although experts now know pollution can damage our children’s health before their žUVW EUHDWK In the UK, 40,000 deaths a year are attributed to outdoor air pollution, and the illnesses it causes costs around ÂŁ20 billion every year. Air pollution can affect lung function and development in unborn babies. • Researchers found that people living in areas experiencing levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution in the top 20% were 40% more likely to have been diagnosed with dementia than those in areas with levels in the lowest 20%. They seem to be at increased risk of ‘silent stroke’ – small areas of damage caused by lack of oxygen to the brain tissue, but not severe enough to cause obvious symptoms. These silent strokes may be a sign of blood vessel disease, linked to increased risk of vascular

On adults • Air pollution causes coughs and increased phlegm and increases your risk of getting lung cancer, contributing to around 1 in 13 cases. It also reduces lung function, which in turn increases risk for COPD
(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). • Long-term exposure to pollution is linked to a number of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and furring of the arteries. It increases the risk of death from cardiac and respiratory causes, especially among people with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions.
On children The effects of pollution on children are more serious, because their organs and immune system are still developing. This, and their smaller mass, makes them particularly vulnerable. • Air pollution can damage your baby in the womb, affecting their lung function and development. High air pollution is linked to low birth weight and premature births. • Exposure to air pollution can cause more coughs and bronchitis, and also increases your child’s risk of getting bacterial pneumonia. • Pollution may play a part in causing asthma in some children and evidence shows it can worsen asthma symptoms. Longterm effects, severity and mortality rates increase with the length of exposure and higher pollution levels.

Use Locally - Issue 31 June 2019 of leaf shine, but not all, so check before you start. • Feed houseplants regularly – good fertilisers are available in garden centres. Choose WKRVH IRUPXODWHG VSHFL¾FDOO\ for the plants where possible, or those suitable for foliageor ¿RZHULQJ KRXVHSODQWV Specialist fertilisers are also available for cacti and African violets.
Houseplant Heaven Now is the time to give houseplants some TLC as they could do with some pampering! Check them over thoroughly and remove and dispose of any that are heavily infested with pests or infected by diseases. Once done, continue as follows… • Pick over remaining plants removing dead, damaged or discoloured leaves. Use sharp scissors, special ‘snips’ or miniature secateurs on tough leaf stems.
the compost is free-draining and that there are crocks at the base of the pot. Consider adding additional grit or perlite to improve drainage.
Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months
• Houseplants usually respond well if repotted in late spring or very early summer, so if yours are pot-bound do this now. Check by carefully removing the plant from its pot – if the root system is quite congested, it’s usually time to move house.
• Once repotted, place plants in a cool, relatively stress-free environment for a week or two, away from hot or direct bright sunlight. Keep them adequately watered and the roots will move into the new compost.
• When repotting, only move the plants up one pot size and use compost as similar as possible to their current compost. If in doubt, seek advice from your compost supplier. Ensure
• Next, give them a bit of a bath, using well-moistened kitchen roll or cotton wool to wipe the leaves clean. Many of the more glossy-leaved houseplants respond well to an application
• Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months, but both recently replanted and more established houseplants need regular watering, particularly as they start to grow and if they are in a fairly warm or sunny position. • Don’t place plants in too sunny a spot – they can get too hot or suffer from leaf scorching if placed too close to a south- or west-facing window. Use an east- or north-facing windowsill where possible, or at least move them further back from the glass. Most houseplants EHQH¾W IURP EHLQJ SODFHG LQ dappled shade in the garden, and they should thrive provided you keep them fed and watered. • If treating yourself to new houseplants, make sure that the plant is well-suited to the position that you have lined up for it – it’s tempting to buy those that do well in really sunny situations, but if you only have a fairly shady windowsill it will suffer immensely over the winter months. Avoid the depreciation trap when buying your next car As political uncertainty continues, people appear reticent to buy high ticket items. I read that new car sales are down, and house sales are at a sixyear low. It’s hardly surprising I suppose, but if your current car is on its last legs - what is one to do? We all know that cars depreciate at an eye-watering rate, some of the less popular models lose over 60% of their purchase value in just three years. Therefore, if the question is: is it time to start thinking outside the box? The answer is: the classic car benefits being, that you can fix it yourself, no computer required; if you look after it, the car will certainly look after you by proliferating in value. That’s a new one isn’t it … a car that goes up in value. If you generally cover low mileage; it’s the perfect investment: insurance is cheap, and you can get classic car insurance that has an agreed value just in case the worse happens. 40 years old or older it is tax and MOT exempt, The benefits just keep on coming… So, next decision, what car should you buy? Remember, a beautiful 1990 Ford Sierra Cosworth now demands a price tag of up to £95,000 if it’s perfect in every way (the Mary Poppins of cars so to speak). All the hot hatches from the 1980’s are also very expensive. So, what can we find that is around £3,000? The online auction sites are awash with MGB’s around this figure, especially the later rubber bumper model. The old classic Mini and Morris Minor will also fall into this price bracket if you aren’t too fussy about the odd minor imperfection on the bodywork. As the years have rolled by, cars have become way more reliable than their 30-year-old counterparts; so, these days you can buy a tenyear-old mainstream car for (what I consider to be) very little money. Let us take the ever-reliable rep-mobile, the Ford Mondeo. She started life in 1993 and it’s still available to this day after several nips and tucks. Over this period, we have had 5 generations, the Mark3 started life in 2000 and continued through to 2007. A hot ST version was available, these have a strong following, could this follow in the footsteps of a Sierra Cosworth? and be worth a tidy sum in years to come? These cars can currently be purchased for around £1,500; they are driven by a chain driven diesel engine that performs very well and is economical.
If you decide on a particular model do your research even these later cars have some inherent faults that have appeared over the years, Example being the Nissan Micra K12 these suffer from the timing chain stretching, this is not a cheap fix. The internet today is awash with forums on every mainstream car, join them and read through the experiences current owners are having. Do remember a car can cover over 250,000 miles without engine failure these days (as long as its been maintained correctly) so do not be put off by mileages up to 160,000 miles. Find a car with two or three previous owners, a full service history, check the Hpi register to ensure it has not been a previous write off and expect at least 10 months MOT. Find a local car that you can see, drive and thoroughly inspect before parting with your hard-earned money. Happy searching everyone and say farewell to heavy depreciation on your next car purchase.
