It May Not Be Too Late To Make A Claim For Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) %\ $QQ +DOGRQ • They told you the loan would be more expensive if you didn’t sign up for PPI.
According to ‘Which?’ the banks have written to 5.5 million customers, letting them know they might have been mis-sold PPI and offering three years in which to make a claim. Although some of these letters were sent in 2013, people are still successfully claiming PPI from banks and other lenders. $ SRWHQWLDO Ă€QDO GHDGOLQH RI -XQH 2019 has also been announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If this is FRQĂ€UPHG LW RIIHUV SOHQW\ RI WLPH to write to lenders and recover the money that should never have been taken from you. COULD YOU HAVE BEEN MISSOLD PPI? PPI could have been mis-sold to you in a number of ways, including these scenarios: • You were pressured by the salesperson, or told it was compulsory. • You were self-employed, unemployed, or retired when the policy was taken out. • You had a pre-existing medical problem. • A clear explanation was not given of how much PPI you were going to pay, or if it was included in the total loan quote. • You already had cover in place within another policy – life insurance, for example. • You were not informed of the ‘cooling-off’ period. 6
CONTACTING THE LENDER If you no longer have your loan agreement, write to or phone the company concerned. Many ODUJHU ÀQDQFLDO RUJDQLVDWLRQV will be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you’ve been sold Payment Protection Insurance. You can also request a copy of your original agreement. Some companies can deal with your entire claim by phone, or online. The Financial Ombudsman Service also has an online questionnaire, and allows you to upload any supporting documents. Otherwise, you should print it off and sent it by recorded delivery after taking a copy for yourself. WHEN THE COMPANY REPLIES You receive a positive response Regular premiums Credit cards and mortgages generally had a regular PPI premium attached, rather than one single premium. If this was the case, you should receive a refund for the premiums paid. If interest had been added, this amount should also be refunded. Single premiums Single PPI premiums were often paid in relation to personal loans DQG ÀQDQFH DJUHHPHQWV +RZ much you receive depends on whether the loan is still in force: • If your loan is ongoing, the lender will calculate the monthly amount you should have been paying (minus the PPI), and this will be deducted from the total amount
outstanding. • If the loan has been repaid in full, you’ll receive a refund for the amounts you paid. The lender should also calculate D QHZ UHGHPSWLRQ ÀJXUH DV though the PPI had never been paid, and repay the difference between this and the amount you actually repaid on redemption. IF THE CLAIM IS REJECTED Should there be no response from the lender within eight weeks, they reject your claim, or you are unhappy with the refunded amount, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for a decision. Gadgets for grooming, cutting, styling or removing, whatever your gender
When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver SRZHUIXO DLUÁRZ ZLWKRXW OHDYLQJ your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer. Another great idea comes from late-night TV advertiser JML. Its £39.99 Simply Straight brush is a heated ceramic brush that promises to combine two essential items: your brush and straighteners. According to the Mirror it works really well - it’s not quite as effective as separate brushes and straighteners, but it comes awfully close and is very, very quick. One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used 10
without it, or you can pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one. There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 is currently on sale for a more reasonable £219 - and you can use them anywhere. Some models are even okay to use on your face. The downside is that they can take some time, so for example you should allow half an hour to do your legs. IPL is available for men too, although they aren’t recommended for use on your face or on anything more sensitive than the bikini line. Devices for men or sold as unisex devices tend to be
more expensive - for example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

It is hard to say which room I enjoyed the most as each had a different effect, but the Volcanic Salt Bath really helped relax my muscles and cleared my chest from a recent cold. How often do we stop and relax and fully unwind? the whole experience at Ragdale Hall really felt like both my body and mind had not only had a rest, but I felt revived and batteries recharged. The Spa was spotless, the hospitality excellent, my back massage and facial pure pampering, and the lunchtime service wonderful. I wondered if Ragdale Hall would meet my

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month BRCA2, which also increase breast cancer risk. Previous breast cancer doubles the risk, and pushes it even higher if you were diagnosed before age 40.
Around 7,300 UK women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer annually and less than half are alive 5 years later. Yet early diagnosis can increase 5-year survival to 90%. That’s why March’s Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is vital. Reducing Risk: Taking the contraceptive pill, having children and breastfeeding are all proven to reduce ovarian cancer risk. TYPES OF OVARIAN CANCER About 90% of ovarian tumours are epithelial ovarian cancer, starting in the layer covering the ovary. Around 1 to 2% of ovarian cancers are germ cell cancers, formed in the ovary’s egg making cells. Rare stromal tumours and sarcomas can also affect the ovary and a few ovarian cancers are primary peritoneal carcinomas, which develop in the membrane around abdominal organs. Slowgrowing borderline ovarian tumours do not grow into the stroma (supportive tissue of the ovary). RISK FACTORS Increasing age: Most ovarian cancer sufferers are postmenopause. Faulty genes: 5 to 15% of ovarian cancers are thought to be caused by an inherited faulty gene, including BRCA1 and 28
Infertility may increase risk, but fertility treatments are no longer believed to do so. There may be an increased risk of borderline ovarian tumours in infertile women treated with IVF. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is linked to less than 1% of ovarian cancers. Being overweight or tall: A BMI of 28 or over increases risk in premenopausal women but has no effect on risk in postmenopausal women. Taller women also have a higher risk. Endometriosis Using talcum powder between your legs is thought to increase ovarian cancer risk due to its irritant effect. Smoking: The longer you’ve smoked, the greater the risk increase for certain ovarian cancers. SYMPTOMS Ovarian cancer symptoms aren’t always easy to identify and may be mistaken for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) symptoms in the early stages. However, if symptoms are new, severe, frequent or persistent (occurring most days for three weeks or more), you should see your GP immediately, although often, a less serious condition is to blame. Look out for: • Abdominal swelling and persistent bloating.
• Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain. ‡ 'LIÀFXOW\ HDWLQJ QDXVHD DQG feeling full unusually quickly. • Back pain. • Needing to urinate more frequently. • Pain during sex. Remember that ovarian cancer is rare in women under 40, but that you should be particularly cautious if you are over 50 or have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. DIAGNOSIS Your GP may do some tests themselves or refer you straight to a specialist. You will be examined externally and internally to check for any lumps or swelling and will then have an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound scan. They’ll also do a blood test for CA125, a protein that’s elevated in half of women with early stage ovarian cancer and 90% of women with advanced ovarian cancer (although other pelvic conditions and pregnancy can cause elevated levels too). They may also order a CT or MRI scan. However, sometimes it’s impossible to diagnose ovarian FDQFHU GHÀQLWLYHO\ ZLWKRXW surgery. TREATMENT Most women with ovarian cancer will require surgery. If your cancer is diagnosed early, you may only need the affected ovary and fallopian tube removed. More advanced cancers may need more extensive surgery, plus chemotherapy before and after, to treat cancerous cells and reduce reoccurrence risk.

Parenting What To Do If You Think Your Child Is Being Bullied by Kate Duggan While we all like to think that our child will tell us if something is wrong, there are lots of reasons they might keep quiet about being bullied. They may feel ashamed, or worried that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be disappointed in them. They may have been threated to keep quiet. Or they could be concerned about what youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll do. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rely on your child to tell you in words whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happening, but you can look for any signs, such as: â&#x20AC;˘ A reluctance to attend school. â&#x20AC;˘ Acting more withdrawn, anxious or moody. â&#x20AC;˘ Clothing becoming torn or dirty more frequently. â&#x20AC;˘ Items going missing. â&#x20AC;˘ An increase in bruises or scratches. The above signs may not indicate bullying. But if you are concerned, talk to your child. Try to choose a time when neither of you need to do anything else, when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re both well-rested, well-fed and in a JRRG PRRG <RXU FKLOG PD\ Ă&#x20AC;QG it easier if just one parent talks to them to start with, so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel outnumbered. What should I do? The key thing is to listen to your child, take their concerns seriously and make sure they 38
know the bullying is not their fault. Comments such as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You need to learn to stand up for yourself,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; will not help your child, but may mean they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t trust you to help them in the future. Your child also shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be expected to change their appearance, hobbies or interests to placate a bully. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s certainly tempting to go into the school â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;all guns blazingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. You will need to speak to the school, but try to do it calmly and in private. Speak to your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teacher or form tutor Ă&#x20AC;UVW EXW LI \RX¡UH QRW KDSS\ with the response make an appointment with the head of year or headmaster. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to be able to give details of the bullying, ideally including times, dates and names, if your child will provide them. All schools should have an anti-bullying policy, so ask to see it. You may want to ask for a written response, detailing how the school plans to address the bullying. Most schools should work with you to improve the situation, but if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel that your concerns are being taken seriously, you may need to take the matter further, to the Chair of Governors, or the police. What if my child is being
bullied through their phone? Home should be a safe haven, but with the advent of mobile phones and social media, bullying can go on around the clock. Cyber-bullying includes texts and phone calls, the sharing of photos, social media comments and more. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best not to respond to any messages, but do save them, or take screenshots as proof. Your child could block the number of the bully, and unfollow or unfriend them. You can also speak to the phone service providerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s malicious calls team, or the social network itself. If the bullying is being done by someone at your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s school, make an appointment to speak to a teacher. The school should be able to offer support, even when the bullying is taking place off school grounds. Threats of violence may need reporting to the police. Where can I go for advice? The month of March sweeps in on the coat tails of winter and it is not unknown for it to snow at this time of year. I recall my mother telling me how she had to push my pram through drifts of it during the harsh winter of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;63. Despite this, 1st March LV PHWHRURORJLFDOO\ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW day of spring (or autumn if you happen to live in the Southern Hemisphere). The old saying that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lambâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is perhaps appropriate. Dubbed â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Hlydâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; by the Anglo-Saxons for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;loudâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;ruggedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; (thought to refer to March winds), it is the month of the vernal equinox when the hours of day and night are split equally. By the end of March, spring is truly in the air and whatever its placement in our planetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s orbit around the sun, it remains the herald of longer, 40
March is DOVR D Ă&#x20AC;UVW for another reason. Its name comes from the Latin Martius, the Roman God of War, and it ZDV DFWXDOO\ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW PRQWK in the Roman calendar. This was traditionally a time for the preparation of war campaigns and invasions. It was also a time for festivities, with a feast known as Tibilustrium to celebrate the end of winter when farming could begin again. Some believe this Roman military precedent has endured into our modern times. US NATO military planners and the Pentagon chose March to go to war in several campaigns including Vietnam, Libya, Syria and Iraq. March can be an ominous month in other ways. The well-known Shakespearean quote from his play Julius Caesar â&#x20AC;&#x153;Beware the Ides of Marchâ&#x20AC;? refers to the midpoint (or 15th) of March, ZKHQ WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW IXOO PRRQ RI WKH
Roman year appeared. It was famously the date on which Caesar was assassinated at a meeting of the Senate. There is also an old superstition that if Easter falls on 25th March or Lady Day (the Feast of the Annunciation in the Christian Church calendar), then disaster for England will follow:

Following in Roman footsteps, Britain continued to use 25th March as the Ă&#x20AC;UVW GD\ RI WKH \HDU XQWLO WKH introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752. But even WRGD\ 0DUFK UHPDLQV WKH Ă&#x20AC;UVW month in other cultural and religious calendars. It is the lively March mating rituals of the hare, which include boxing and leaping, that apparently led to the phrase â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;mad as a March hareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; mentioned in literature

as early as 1500. The Victorian author Lewis Carroll subsequently used the March Hare for a character in his book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - a cohort of the Mad Hatter at a never-ending tea party. The concept of the March Hare has become so popular that it lends its name to contemporary events too. In Swindon, the Mad March Hare is a charity run for varying abilities to raise money for breast cancer; and in Canada, the March Hare is a poetry festival, said to be an auditory pun on the word ‘hear’. Pisceans are known for being creative, imaginative, sensitive and compassionate, so it is rather a revelation to learn that more British Prime Ministers were born in March than in any other month, including John Major, James Callaghan, Harold Wilson and Neville Chamberlain amongst others. Recognised across the globe, and not only by those born in the Emerald Isle, March also brings the Feast of St Patrick on 17th - a lively celebration of Irish culture. A missionary and bishop during the 5th century, St Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland and his designated day is
a national holiday there, as well as a good excuse for drinking, partying and “the wearing of the green”. The Irish shamrock emblem with its three leaves is said to have been adopted as an explanation of the Holy Trinity when missionaries were converting the pagan Irish to Christianity. With St Patrick’s Day growing in popularity year by year, 2017 will see a parade, festival and other events in London to mark the event. In celebrating the advent of March, perhaps we should take a shamrock leaf out of Ireland’s book rather than following the Roman example. But whatever you do this month, try not to be a mad March hare!

Since the 1980s, when he started hunting for fossils in his spare time, Steve â&#x20AC;&#x201C; now aged 66 - has dug up more than 2,000 specimens, some of which are rare examples of ancient species that experts believed did not previously exist in that area. The ÂŁ5m Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to give it its full title â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is the pinnacle of this Dorset plumberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarkable achievements. As well as showcasing his impressive collection, it uses CGI displays to recreate the marine environment of 150 million years ago, allowing visitors to see how the creatures would have moved and interacted when alive.
A fossil is usually formed when an animal or plant dies and is rapidly buried by sand, soil or mud. Fossilization occurs when the circumstances for preserving the body are just right, and an ancient seabed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; where bodies are quickly covered up â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is one of the best places to look.
The word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fossilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; comes from the Latin word â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;fossusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which literally means â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;something obtained by diggingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Steve Etches was fortunate to live near Dorsetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jurassic coast, but you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to live near a rich excavation site to make fossil collecting your hobby. Fossil collectors are a diverse group and vary from the casual collector to the dedicated hobbyist, who might even travel the world looking for rare specimens. Some individuals even combine a fossil hobby with collecting crystals and minerals. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not sure where to start, you could visit displays at the Natural History Museum in London or explore www.fossilmuseum.net: a
virtual museum of fossils, with timelines, records and information on fossil sites throughout the world. Alternatively, visit one of the hundreds of locations in the UK that are known for fossils. During the summer many fossil-rich coastal resorts offer opportunities to go hunting with an experienced guide, and that is a great way to establish a basis for your collection. Fossils are commonly found on the beach, or in quarries, but others have been found in more unusual places. Be aware that if you are entering D IDUP Ă&#x20AC;HOG RU D TXDUU\ WR search, you may need to obtain permission before you can enter. Last Wednesday morning chez Hughes witnessed that most unusual of events - both Sarah (My Dearly Beloved) and I had the GD\ RII $QWLFLSDWLQJ Ă&#x20AC;HUFH negotiations regarding the use of our precious spare time, I decided to revert to my default position - that of immediately giving in. That way, the dreaded schlep to the retail park and the subsequent feigning of interest in soft furnishings would be over much more quickly. But Sarah had a surprise up her sleeve. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tom, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really want to go to the Outlet Village today, do you?â&#x20AC;? Spotting an escape route, I decided to bide my time and not break for cover too early. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind darlingâ&#x20AC;Śwhat did you have in mind?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been reading a book all about relationships - donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look at me like that 48
- and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve decided that today we should do something that we havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t done in ages and please wipe that smirk off your face. Soâ&#x20AC;Śwhy donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we.... go the cinema? You know, like a proper date?â&#x20AC;? I began to cheer up at the thought of an afternoon immersed inside a suspenseful twisty plot, but then it hit me - what awful saccharine-soaked weepy would I be forced to endure? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Yes but which one darling? Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re spoilt for choice.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Me Before You?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enough about RXU PDUULDJH ZKDW Ă&#x20AC;OP GR you fancy seeing?â&#x20AC;? I queued in the vast foyer of the multiplex for some cola and popcorn. Eventually the spotty youth behind the counter advised me (for an extra thirty pence) to go large. After I acquiesced he presented me with a vast
carton of pop which looked like it had been donated from the set of The Borrowers. I popped my head to one side of the enormous plastic cup and said to the acne ravaged young man, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You sure this is the biggest one?â&#x20AC;? As the confused assistant gave me a stare as blank as a starting pistol Sarah, suitably armed with comestibles, dragged me towards screen 8. Blissfully the auditorium was almost empty, meaning we could HQMR\ WKH Ă&#x20AC;OP ZLWKRXW the dreaded witterings of garrulous cinema goers. After an infomercial from some American about turning off oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s phone, the lights dimmed and the BBFC notice appeared. Then - my worst nightmare - a shaft of light as the screen doors opened to reveal two scruffy-looking couples, laden with nachos, hot dogs and all other matter of junk. I groaned as they

fell up the stairs and plonked themselves noisily behind our seats. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The greasy smell I can just about cope with, I just pray they will keep quiet,â&#x20AC;? I said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those hot dogs donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t smell too bad.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t talking about the food.â&#x20AC;? 7KH Ă&#x20AC;OP EHJDQ DV GLG WKH sniggers, the loud whispering and the crunching. The cacophony now unbearable, I decide to meet this egregious Ă RXWLQJ RI WKH UXOHV KHDG RQ I did what any other polite Englishman would do: I tutted very loudly. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tom, shush I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enjoy the
Ă&#x20AC;OP Âľ â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make head nor tail with that lot jabbering on.â&#x20AC;? There was only one thing for it - time to deploy the icy stare. Useless. The inane blather continued unabated. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cope any longer. Our date was turning into a disaster. Suddenly I stood up and announced in a loud voice, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sorry Sarah, but I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do this anymore.â&#x20AC;? With a glare at our noisy neighbours, who immediately began nudging each other, I Ă RXQFHG GRZQ WKH DLVOH DQG Ă RSSHG LQWR D VHDW DW WKH front. As the credits rolled at the end of the silly sugary movie, I wiped something
from my eye and rejoined my wife who, resisting my attempts to link arms, strode off towards the exit. It was only when sat back in the car that the full extent of spousal wrath was unleashed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t embarrassing at all, was it?â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Listen dear, you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care what people think. The Life List It’s All Right For Some! When faced with delayed pensions, jobs stolen by robots, and endless reality television (we were lucky with The Family in 1974!), you can see why the younger generation thinks that we’ve had the best of it. At Christmas we each got an orange painted stone. We were told that the radio only worked at teatime. We shared a toilet with the municipal baths. We had a single pair of socks between three of us - a brown one and a blue one. Our Father Christmas letter simply read: all donations gratefully received. We made all our own decorations out of last year’s decorations. We glued pencil shavings together to make a new pencil. It was a treat to be sat outside the pub with a lemonade. As dad was a keen gardener, we had to follow the rag and bone horse until we’d collected a bagful. We were only allowed to stay up late to watch programmes we couldn’t understand. Take a quick glance at the handlebars of this Honda VFR1200F and you can tell something is missing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but it often takes a while to work out exactly what. Even hard-nosed biker friends will struggle to spot that what this sports tourer is lacking is a clutch lever. You see, this is Hondaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s DCT automatic model, a sort of giant, grown-up twist and go scooter thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not nearly as horrifying to ride as it might sound. Most ELNHUV ZLOO Ă&#x20AC;QG WKH LGHD RI ORVLQJ control of the gears and letting a computer do the shifting for them a cardinal sin â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll happily admit I was one of them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but then I learned to live with the Honda, and you know what: , WKLQN PRVW ULGHUV ZLOO Ă&#x20AC;QG LW hard to go back to a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;normalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; bike again. The rider selects drive at the push of a button on the handlebars and that familiar â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;clonkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of a bikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gear being engaged is still apparent. However, pulling away requires 60
no slipping of the clutch or fumbling with your feet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you simply let the bike take care of swapping cogs and concentrate on riding. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling lively, you can do it yourself by prodding up and down buttons on the handlebars â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but chances are you probably wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. That paragraph wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t convince many bikers to change to a DCT any time soon, but I can assure you as a devout gear shifter Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve quickly learned to love it like I never expected I would. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really that good. In fact, the VFR1200F has won me over in more ways than one. It helps that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got a glorious engine. The liquid cooled V4 lump produces 173bhp and is good for 165mph. It sounds wonderful and as the revs LQFUHDVH \RXU KHOPHW LV Ă&#x20AC;OOHG with an intoxicating warble. <RX¡OO Ă&#x20AC;QG LW TXLWH DGGLFWLYH On the road it feels stable and VROLG WR ULGH 7KH FRQĂ&#x20AC;GHQFH LW inspires in the corners right from the off makes it an easy bike to get on with, and one youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll want to use whatever the weather. Rarely do you ride a bike that feels as stable in the wet as it does in the dry, but this Honda certainly does. The VFR is practical too. Our test model features luggage that comes as standard on the GT model, which consists of a top box and panniers (ÂŁ725 optional extra on other models). These
are easy to operate with the LJQLWLRQ NH\ DQG Ă&#x20AC;W HYHU\WKLQJ youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need for a weekend away, or will cope admirably with an ad-hoc trip to the supermarket. The heated grips (costing ÂŁ250 usually but standard on this GT) are a welcome addition too. They warm up quickly and OLJKWO\ WRDVW \RXU Ă&#x20AC;QJHUV RQ colder morning rides. The usual excellent Honda build quality is very much DSSDUHQW 7KH Ă&#x20AC;W DQG Ă&#x20AC;QLVK RI the switchgear is beautiful and FHUWDLQO\ IHHOV OLNH LW MXVWLĂ&#x20AC;HV the ÂŁ14,599 price tag. The shaft drive is an added bonus ² LW¡V UHĂ&#x20AC;QHG DQG FRQYHQLHQW reducing on cleaning rituals (especially with those classy white wheels) and cuts down on the need for maintenance. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot to love about the VFR1200F. Once you get over the initial shock of not having to grab a clutch â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and believe me youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go for it more than once before you remember itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not there â&#x20AC;&#x201C; then the VFR really is easy to fall for. Practical, comfortable, incredibly swift and great fun â&#x20AC;&#x201C; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very close to being the perfect all-rounder youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always promised yourself.
