Unless of course you are a foster child, in which case you may consider you have more than 1 and this month we have an in depth look at what it feels like to become a foster carer. This is a very personal issue for my family as its about our journey into fostering, (and therefore is copyright to Use Locally Magazine), if it makes you think about why, how and what, then its worth the loss of privacy. FOSTER CARE ASSOCIATES Our Journey to Fostering Nearly two years ago we reached a crossroads in our lives. I was made redundant from work and knew that at my age getting another job would be hard. Somehow we managed to turn this catastrophe around and look at it in a different way – part of me saw it as a wonderful opportunity to finally do something I had always wanted to do, something that I may never have had the courage to do if I wasn’t unemployed. What had I always want to do? I wanted to make a difference to a child’s life – not quite in the extraordinary way some people can – by going to a country ravaged by famine and rescuing homeless children, but if I could make a difference to just one child here in UK I would feel that it had been worth it. So I looked around to see how could I start and I found that it was going to be a long process and that at any time during it I could change my mind. Many times during the selection process, I felt that it may not be for us as a family and many times we sat and talked through issues that it brought 8
up for us all. My children were concerned they were being replaced, my husband thought I was having empty nest syndrome and I thought at times that I would never be able to cope with the issues looked after children faced. During the training/selection process, we found out more about ourselves and each other and gradually we looked at
things differently and grew to understand that we weren’t replacement parents for foster children, but carers for them while they couldn’t be at home. I’m not sure if that’s better or worse, but it certainly
helps me to understand some of their behaviour and allows me to see the situation through their eyes – after all how would I feel if I had been wrenched from my family and installed in a house with a ‘happy family’? (It’s hard enough going to stay with friends or relatives for a weekend, never mind for the foreseeable future!). Then came the most

nerve-wracking interview of my life. My husband sailed through it serenely but I was extremely nervous. This was the panel that would authorize us to foster and although they were very nice, it had been a very long time since I had sat in front of a panel of three at interview, never mind six! Several questions later and we were asked to wait outside to await their decision. Happily they decided that with all our neuroses and bad habits we were OK as would-be foster carers. There are masses of training opportunities too if you feel that you would like to attend them and indeed some are compulsory. The lesson being you don’t have to be perfect to look after children as really there is no such thing as perfect families and perfect parents. Now the real business of looking after children would begin and we waited anxiously for the calls to come saying our first child was on their way. If we felt we could cope with them we would then be given information about their history and be asked to make a decision as to whether we could help and be a match for that child.

Lancaster Grange embeds itself in the local community It has been an extremely busy few months with enquiries and interest running high ever since we welcomed our first resident to Lancaster Grange care home near Newark back in August. There has never been a quiet moment…. from our VIP Opening event to our Open Weekend complete with flypast, the successful launch of our monthly coffee mornings raising funds for local charities and our first Christmas celebrations, we have all enjoyed welcoming new visitors to the home. Following the great feedback we have received recently, both from families and as part of our first external CQC inspection, we are so proud of the quality person-centred care that we have brought to the area. I definitely recommend the home’ Our first events for the year To mark the opening of our Memory Lane Community, which offers specialist dementia care, we are planning several Dementia
Awareness events throughout the year. The first of these is on Thursday 6 March from 5-7pm and we are working in conjunction with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. There will be a variety of information stands and Adam Hayward, Practice Development Matron for Dementia, will be running dementia friends training sessions. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend (places on these sessions are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment). Why not join us for Coffee? The launch of our monthly coffee mornings on the first Thursday of each month from 10.00am – 12.00pm has proved extremely successful. Entertainment has ranged from a saxophonist and musical bingo, to quizzes and our Christmas themed
morning where the Fernwood Ladies Group joined us. We have already raised funds for several charities including Alzheimer’s Society and the British Heart Foundation and we are planning some great
entertainment over the coming weeks. As well as offering a chance for you to stop, unwind and enjoy a chat you will also have an opportunity to make new friends, meet some of our staff and sample some of our lovely cakes! COLLABORATION A better way to resolve disputes
Relationship breakdown, particularly divorce, is a difficult area of law, where people are often emotionally raw and one party may feel hugely upset at being caught in the process at all. Expectations about what a court is able to deliver may be unrealistic so it is not surprising that people come out of an often distressing process feeling dissatisfied. Important decisions need to be made when you separate that will have an impact in the future not only on you but the rest of the family. Is it not therefore important that you work together to reach the right decisions? The collaborative process can allow that to happen and avoid unnecessary disappointment and distress. It is a way of dealing with family disputes which involves both of you appointing a collaboratively trained lawyer, negotiations are all conducted in four way meetings and those involved and their lawyers work together to reach a solution face to face. Everyone is committed to not going to court and at the outset an agreement is signed to that effect. It is a very empowering process giving you more control over what is happening and a greater opportunity for everyone’s opinion to be listened to and taken into account. Other professionals can be involved in the process for expert advice e.g. on valuations, tax or pensions or counsellors if emotional support is what is required.

Who Cares? It was Benjamin Franklin who said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” We don’t stay young forever and no matter how young we feel inside, as time goes by, we look in the mirror and reality hits; we are getting old! We begin to feel more vulnerable, then, as the clock ticks by, some of us will need assistance with everyday life. For most, the dread of having to rely on someone becomes an ever-increasing anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be if we take time to make sure we get good quality service from people that care, who help keep us independent for as long as possible - including for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s, dementia or those who have special needs. We hear horror stories of carers who show little care or patience with vulnerable people they are responsible for; the plight of elderly care has been a hot topic for government and media recently. Families live with nagging thoughts: “Are they ok?”, “Is there anything they need?”, not to mention an overwhelming sense of guilt because they are unable to take care of a relative. The worst scenario is when there is nobody to think about that vulnerable person; they are on their own, relying exclusively on care services, not understanding they have a right to choose who cares for them. They accept what, or who, they are given and don’t question the care plan, even when they are unhappy about it. How can one guarantee quality of care? The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is a body that inspects and audits services against government standards of care. Their remit includes hospitals, dental practices, doctors, ambulance services, care homes and all other care agencies. We do, however, need to ask ourselves what we would like and expect for the care of our loved ones, and, in time, maybe for ourselves. After all, certain care aspects meeting a required standard may not be as we would like and be happy with; we have a choice and this needs to be made very clear. 24
There are care agencies with whose service I would not be happy - for myself, let alone a family member. I would urge anyone who requires care for themselves or a family member to make a list of what’s important to them and make an informed choice by looking at the options available, not taking the first thing offered. Research before you make a decision - don’t take the first one that comes along. Make sure you ask the questions because two thirds of British councils commission 15 minute home care visits. You can question time allowed for visits. You have a right to choose who cares for you, be it the choice of agency, or who attends to you from that agency. What I believe is important • What training does the carer have? • Have they been CRB Checked? • Continuity of care - who will come each day to see your relative/you and continue to on a daily basis. Personally, I wouldn’t want an array of carers, not knowing who’s coming from one day to the next. Continuity is extremely important and in particular, to someone who is vulnerable. Familiarity and regular routines are relished by the elderly and vulnerable. A new carer turning up without being introduced first is a stranger. If it isn’t a regular carer, how can they recognise signs of a new illness that needs attention? Something like a urine infection can
make people behave strangely; a different carer may think that’s the way an individual normally behaves. I know I wouldn’t want to be rushed; how can someone attend a home and be expected to wash, dress, feed and give medication in fifteen minutes? Is this acceptable? In my view, certainly not! A 30 minute visit is the very least acceptable as so much caring needs to be given, especially if that visit is the only one the individual has daily. With regards meal schedules and daily routines, ask yourself, is it acceptable to be given breakfast at 10am, lunch by 12pm and in bed by 6pm? Unbelievably, it does happen! Another consideration is the consequent knock-on effect on medication timings. If there is a delay in a carer arriving, I would like to be informed, not left wondering what’s happening and another brought in to fill the gap as soon as possible. Who checks to make sure the carer stays and does the job properly- are there spot checks? Please make sure you make the choice that’s right for you. You have the right to make the decision, whether you are paying yourself or are being funded by social services - don’t be fobbed off! If you don’t like the care being given, change the provider - you have the right!

Sshh! Theres a well kept secret hiding in Fernwood! Ok I’ll share! Have you been to Browns? We went on Saturday evening and had one of the best steaks I have had for eons! Browns describes itself as eclectic, and quirky. I agree the décor is fun, and hey I like it a little different. But where Browns really excels is in the food! From the moment we arrived, Louise , the manager, and Gemma our waitress took the utmost care of us and were attentive without being in the way – that’s a fine line to tread, and they did it as well as many high priced swanky London restaurants. Our food was literally mouth watering, my rump steak and my husbands braised beef, were melt in the mouth delicious– where does that beef come from? The horse radish mash, was out of this world, & I had a blue cheese sauce with my steak that was rich, creamy and just perfect, (so many are overpowering!). (Can I borrow the chef for the MILs visit?) I haven’t even mentioned the starters, EH (esteemed husband) had Mussels, and I had the Honduran Pork Balls, impressive lip smacking (literally) starters, with ciabatta bread on the side. Desserts were the scrumptious Eton Mess for me, and the incredibly sophisticated Affrogato for EH.

Presentation of the food is picture perfect, and the taste is divine. The ambience of Browns is just right, from the “Jackie” comics on the walls of the spotless uber trendy loos, to the mix of chairs at the tables and the clever way they have divided the dining room with a strategically placed screen, to make it more intimate. (I’m sorry to say I love the white rabbit on the ceiling too!) Fashionable clientele were in the bar, enjoying cocktails and chat, and sitting in the stylish areas that again are cleverly divided to give privacy if you choose it. If you haven’t tried Browns, YOU MUST, I will certainly be going again, price wise, its very reasonable, our bill came to £66 for 3 courses, coffee and drinks. I call that excellent value for money. However you look at it, if you haven’t been, put it on your Bucket list, and if you have then you know all about it and how naughty you are keeping it to yourself! St John Passion In recent years, an oratorio performance by the cathedral choir has formed part of Lincoln's Lenten pilgrimage. Bach's 'St John Passion' is among the composer's greatest achievements, and is widely held to be a cornerstone of Western music. Bach sets the gospel narrative from the arrest of Jesus through to the crucifixion. Soloists take the parts of Christ and the Evangelist, having some of the
most expressive and dramatic recitative ever composed. The choir takes the part of the crowd, and sings the two magisterial choruses that frame the oratorio. Solo arias provide for moments of reflection on the narrative, and chorales (hymns of the Lutheran tradition, many of which have found their way into English hymn books) serve to step back from the action of the story, forming a detached
'commentary'. As in previous years, the choir will be supported by a professional orchestra of period-instrument players, which will conjure the sound world familiar to Bach in 18th-centry Leipzig. The line-up of professional singers includes former choral scholar Bozidar SMILJANIC, international performer and Lincoln resident Mark Wilde, and Director of Music Aric Prentice.
