Karols Korner
Welcome to the warmer weather, FINALLY! Is it time to get out and about and start enjoying the outdoors again! Days out and places to visit, make sure to visit local attractions who really appreciate your business! Talking of which!.... Have you been supporting our local shops in Newark over the last few weeks? I saw a wonderful post on fb the other day, (find it on our FB page, Use Locally Newark & Lincs) talking about if you cant shop locally for any reason, then there are so many other ways to support your local businesses, simply sharing them around FB or talking about them to your friends will increase awareness and ultimately generate new clients. I walked round a local town the other day, no names! And was horrified at the lack of interesting shops. Every second shop was a charity shop ( and I love charity shops), and even M & S was closing there too! What's happening to these places will happen in Newark as well, if we don’t get up and support them by spending our money locally. So please, listen to my heartfelt plea, take the time to explore and spend locally, you will find hidden treasures and new favourites Have a great month

Use Locally - Issue 73 May 2019 off your list is invaluable in encouraging you to carry on, and could in fact be one of the main reasons for the success of debt snowballing.
Advantages of debt snowballing • It offers vital motivation. • It’s a simple and straightforward system that’s easy to maintain.
Weather the Debt Conditions Debt snowballing is a term used to describe a particular method of dealing with debt, which in some ways goes against ‘traditional’ thinking. It’s commonly advised to deal with WKH PRVW H[SHQVLYH GHEW ¾UVW in terms of interest rates and charges, which is a natural and effective approach to paying down debt. But one issue that isn’t taken into account when repaying debt in this way is the psychology that can sometimes LQ¿XHQFH D VXFFHVVIXO outcome. Here’s how to debt snowball • Make a list of all your debts – the one with the smallest balance at the top.
towards the next debt. • Continue in the same way down your list (the second smallest next), making the minimum payment on all other borrowing. • If you’re able to earn more money, putting it towards the debt you’re currently repaying increases the snowball effect and reduces your overall level of borrowing. • When the debt you’re focusing on has been paid off, cross it off your list – rinse and repeat until you’re debt-free.
• Pay as much as you can off this debt and repeat each month until you’ve paid it off in full.
Human psychology when paying off debt Debt snowballing is a system that applies a little human psychology to paying down debt, and acknowledges that we all lack motivation at times. The method only works if you KDYH VXI¾FLHQW IXQGV WR PDNH the minimum payments on all your debts, however, so if you don’t, you would need to look at alternatives.
• Cross it off your list of debts and use the money released
The sense of accomplishment when you can cross a debt
• Pay off the minimum amount on all your credit cards and other debts, apart from the one with the smallest balance.
6
• You’re forced to focus on one debt at a time, and as long as you keep up the minimum payments on other debts you can forget about them for a while. • It helps you manage your money for the long term and introduces good money habits. Are there any downsides to debt snowballing? The main downside of debt snowballing is the extra interest you pay on your debts when compared with the debt avalanche method, and when considered only from a mathematical point of view it clearly isn’t the most obvious option. Repaying debt is a little like dieting, however – small wins offer the motivation that many people need to continue and succeed. One important issue is to make sure you dedicate any money released when a debt is repaid to paying off the next one. Without this, the ‘snowball’ effect of increasing amounts being available to tackle your next debt doesn’t materialise, and the system will stall. By Ann Haldon

Best Western Deincourt Hotel, London Rd, Newark NG24 1TF
Krugerrand
Breitling
Amber Urgently required!
THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in Newark and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000.Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash. Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.
So on Monday 27th May, you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Please see listed a few of the items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES – LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES. If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Amber and Jade, costume jewellery – high prices paid. WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO VISIT. For further information or an appointment please contact us on: 07930 157 944 any time.We specialise in watches and listed below are just a few of the make we require – BROKEN OR WORKING – ANY CONDITION Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Philippe, Vachron PLUS MANY OTHER MAKES
Have you watched the BBC programmes Flog It or The Antiques Roadshow? Our format is exactly the same, but we offer the chance to sell without the uncertainty and commission of the Auction House and if you are unsuccessful at auction there may still be charges to pay. East Midlands Antiques realise that there are some very unusual items that require the exposure of a major auction house and we would be pleased to advise in such cases. However many items do not warrant this and East Midlands Antiques will offer accordingly. Come and try the friendly and discreet service we have provided for many other people like yourselves over the years. ow can we support local businesses if we cant actually spend any money with them? Maybe because they don’t stock items we want, or they may be slightly pricier (often they can be cheaper), or perhaps its hard to visit the shop in person? Maybe its because sometimes we don’t value the things we can get in a local shop? Perhaps we don’t understand their expertise, perhaps we don’t really see that expertise as useful to us? I admit sometimes its easier to just buy clothes etc when I’m at Asda, but I have been trying to give that up! eg breast cancer, post surgery, Maternity & nursing. They completely understand the needs of women and how to properly fit a bra perfectly. Shockingly almost 80% of women in the UK wear a bra that is the wrong size, this can cause problems with posture, neck and back pain, and damage breast tissue problems that can be avoided. They offer free fitting and if you take advantage of all this expertise and then pay slightly more for the actual bra, you are definitely buying a bra that is a correct fit. Going away and buying it online to save a couple of pounds is a false economy, if it arrives and doesn’t fit perfectly, who is going to sort that out? The price includes the expertise that they have spent many years attaining, you don’t get that in the big supermarkets! The other thing I have always found when I buy quality, is that it lasts. I have some really good quality shoes, they cost a lot more than supermarket shoes, and they have lasted for years! And boy, are they comfortable! The supermarket versions last a season if I’m lucky!

Make it Minimal For some, the ideal view from WKHLU EDFN GRRU LV D ¿RZHU žOOHG FRWWDJH VW\OH JDUGHQ brimming with colourful SHUIXPHG SODQWV DQG ¿RZHUV buzzing with bees and with not a straight line in sight. But there is an increasing interest in a more minimalist style, where plants are grown in a much more designed situation, with straight lines aplenty but far fewer plants and yet each plant having a much greater individual impact. If you hanker after a minimalist garden, here are some suggestions for achieving the effect you want.

Green, in the form of foliage, helps to add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so make sure you include it, perhaps as neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers. One of the key design elements to a minimalist garden is simplicity. Decide on the plants you like that will suit your garden, and then keep the different types you use as low as possible. The biggest impact will be achieved if you use just a few, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses.
Another key to the minimalist look is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles thrown in. Edges need WR EH VKDUSO\ GHžQHG SHUKDSV using sleepers or other timber, or even angled metal. Make sure that planting does not interfere with the lines created by border edging, so keep plants well back.
A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and a single type of container – for example, conifers of varying sizes look great in terracotta containers. The only variation here is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same. It is easy to achieve by buying several different sizes of the same type of conifer and then keeping them clipped regularly so that they remain of differing sizes. Alternatively, if you can only get one size, trim them lightly to achieve the desired look, but remember most conifers won’t withstand hard pruning and are inclined to show their brown inner foliage if cut back too hard.

Green-f ingered gadgets Technology to help get ready for summer As your garden begins to bloom once more, it’s time to let technology give Mother Nature a helping hand. If you’re a keen gardener and you’re going on holiday, an electronic timer can keep your hydrangeas hydrated while you’re away. We like Hozelock’s Automatic Watering System, which is a modular collection of automatic timers, hoses, connectors and even an Apple/ Android-compatible Cloud Controller, which enables you to control the water from your phone or tablet. You can adjust the watering according to the actual weather conditions, ensuring you don’t under- or over-water everything, and you can also create much more complex schedules than you can with a traditional timer. The original RRP of £160 for the Cloud Controller was a lot of money, but it’s widely available now for less than £90. Every year we ask ourselves the same question: can we afford a robot lawnmower yet? Prices continue to fall – robot mowers were over £2,500 a few years back but had fallen to around £550 last year. Prices are starting to level out but you can pick up the Worx Landroid for around £410 on Amazon. That’s nearly a third off the RRP. We wouldn’t recommend a robo-mower for really complicated gardens, but for straightforward ones they’re really useful. If that’s still a bit too much for a mower, cordless lawnmowers are getting cheaper too, and their batteries are more than up to the job 32
of even fairly large lawns. Flymo’s Mighti-Mo has dropped from ÂŁ234 to around ÂŁ170, and it won’t run out of puff until you’ve cut almost 250 square metres. Cordless power isn’t just convenient, although not having to run cables to the very corners of the garden is certainly a boon. It’s also safer, because there’s no danger of accidentally cutting an electric cable. And electric motors have improved to the point where they can be taken just as seriously as petrol ones, so you can get decently powerful electric trimmers, saws, loppers and chainsaws. The higher the voltage, the more power – so a 36V model such as Black and Decker’s Lithiumion chainsaw, currently ÂŁ235, is considerably more powerful than the more common and slightly cheaper 18V models. Some of the biggest names in power tools have embraced FRUGOHVV VR IRU H[DPSOH \RXÂľOO žQG D UDQJH RI tools from the likes of Makita, Stihl and DeWalt as well as budget brands such as Worx. If you’re considering a cordless device, it might be worth investing in a second battery: there are few things as annoying as running out of charge when a job is nine-tenths done. Just make sure you actually charge it in advance, because it’s even more annoying to plug in a spare only to discover that it’s FRPSOHWHO\ ÂżDW Images top left clockwise- Hozelock Cloud Controller, DeWalt cordless chainsaw, Flymo MightiMo cordless mower, Flymo 1200R robot mower.

instantly. With a sickening bang, the car made impact with something large. Pauline shrieked. “We’ve run over the dog! Neil slammed on the brake. The man who’d been waving at them tapped on Neil’s window. Neil wound it down.
A Bad Day for Brutus? “Look, there’s a sign for a country park, Pauline pointed. “Let’s stop for ten minutes and let Brutus out for a tiddle.

“A bit of fresh air will do us all some good, Neil agreed, slowing down.
Neil drove on. “There’s always someone about to leave if you’re patient.
They had spent the bank holiday weekend camping with Neil’s brother and his family, who were the devoted owners of Brutus the lurcher although not quite devoted enough to make room for him in their own car. Neil and Pauline luckily had a roof box for all their extra camping equipment so had Brutus riding with them. Brutus had an unfortunate habit of jumping out of vehicles, so they’d been driving for an hour with the windows shut. Brutus had also spent the entire weekend luxuriating in cow žHOGV VR WKH DLU LQ WKH FDU ZDV eye-wateringly pungent. They drove towards the car park entrance. “Why doesn’t he want us to go in?â€? Pauline asked anxiously. “Do you think it’s full?â€?
The air in the car was eye-wateringly pungent.
“Mate, I tried to warn you. He shook his head. “I’d recommend you stay in the car. Neil said, feeling queasy. “Should I go forward or back? “I’d try reversing slowly. It’s going to be nasty but at least you’re only going back over the bits that are already crushed. Neil did not particularly.
“I’ll ask him, he seems pretty insistent. Mad about Morris A brief history of Britain’s quirkiest dance tradition The tinkle of bells, the rhythmic thump of feet hitting the ground and the click of sticks struck together, all in time to the rousing music of an accordion. It’s the sound of the UK’s most ancient dance tradition. However, while many enthusiasts see Morris dancing as a touchstone of Britain’s ancient rural culture, a little research into the history of the dance reveals some surprising theories about its origins. Some historians believe the name ‘Morris’ is derived from the word Moorish, the name given to a group of North African Muslims who ruled Spain from 711 to 1492. During the 15th century their culture inspired a fashion for exotic spectacle amongst the royal courts of Europe, when each country came up with its own unique version of a ‘Moorish’ dance. In England the earliest written record of the Morris dance was set down in 1448 38
when London’s Goldsmiths Company made a payment of seven shillings to the troupe of dancers who had entertained them, and documents from the court of Henry VII show that a ‘mourice dance’ was performed at Christmas in the year 1484.
The earliest written record of the Morris dance is from 1448 Taking ‘sides’ Morris dancing went in and out of fashion during the 17th and 18th centuries but enjoyed a revival during the Victorian era. In 1934 an organisation called The Morris Ring was established to promote Morris traditions, but the group caused controversy by not allowing females to join. When the Equality Act was introduced in 2010, the Morris Ring was forced to admit
women to its ranks, but still refused to accept them as dancers. Nowadays attitudes have changed, and the organisation’s website currently states: “At our 2018 Annual Representatives Meeting there was overwhelming support for a proposal to enable any Morris team, whatever its gender make up, to become a member of The Morris Ring if they support the founding principles of the organisation.â€? Unfortunately, gender discrimination is not the only controversy to have dogged the world of Morris dancing. The tradition in which some sides paint their faces black is thought to have originated when dancers tried to disguise themselves whilst ‘begging’ for tips (public begging was illegal at the time). Whatever the roots of this practice, it’s not hard to understand why it might cause offence in the multicultural Britain of today. Although the debates surrounding Morris traditions continue to rumble on, they appear to have had little impact on the May Day revival that is currently being enjoyed in the UK. Given the British public’s desire to reconnect with its ancient cultural traditions, it seems that the number of Morris sides in the UK – presently around 13,000 – will continue to grow. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to tie on those silver EHOOV SXW ÂżRZHUV URXQG your hat and get ready to welcome in the summer. By Kate McClelland

WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century.
MAY TALKS
Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20].
5th May Closed
Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15]. There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. In addition you may wish to log on to our international website: www.thisisyourbible.com.
