Outdoor Joys
The best tech toys to take outside
Some of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car DURXQG … ZLWK ORWV RI ÀUPV offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe - around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions. Complex toys can be fun too, of course. One kind of toy that’s improved dramatically in recent years is the electric car or bike for kids. It’s possible to get a decent trike for less than £40 that delivers 50 minutes of movement between charges, while around the £200 mark \RX¡OO ÀQG LPSUHVVLYH UHSOLFDV RI grown-up cars such as BMW’s futuristic electric i8. Remember that such vehicles do take a while to charge, so make sure you plug them in the night before you want to use them. If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel 6
but want to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70. Radio controlled cars are fun, EXW UDGLR FRQWUROOHG à \LQJ machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphonecontrolled drone helicopter. Drones start at around £20 for basic ones and reach £190 for Star Wars-themed models, and drones with built-in cameras start at around £60. If you want WR JHW VHULRXV \RX FDQ ÀQG D good selection of advanced drones with HD cameras and optical video stabilisers from around £300, rising to over £1,000 for high-end models. One word of warning with drones: their propellers can be sharp and cause injury if they bump into people, so it’s a good idea to look for one with a protective ring around
the propellers if you’ll be giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you FDQ DQG FDQ¡W à \ GURQHV VXFK as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t DSSUHFLDWH \RX à \LQJ D FDPHUD over their garden. Do you remember the days of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega 0DVWRGRQ … ZKLFK ÀUHV foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, supersoaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water.

Finance
By Ann Haldon
Should You Pay Off Debts With Your Pension? time to pay.
The 2014 Budget introduced new regulations on how personal pensions can be accessed. These new pension freedoms mean that, if you have a money purchase or defined contribution pension, buying an annuity is no longer your only option at retirement. Many people have since chosen to withdraw pension monies to invest in other financial products, and some have decided to pay off debts with the money. So is it a good idea to repay debt in this way, and what are the main aspects to consider? DO YOU WANT TO ACCESS YOUR PENSION BEFORE RETIREMENT? Some pension schemes allow you to access your pension at the age of 55. Doing so can significantly reduce the amount you have available in older age, however, unless you have other pensions or a large savings pot. If you have large-scale debt there may be better options that would leave your pension intact until retirement – for example, making informal agreements with your creditors for more 8
A WORD ABOUT PENSION LIBERATION SCAMS Since the new legislation was introduced, people under the age of 55 have been targeted by pension ‘scammers’ who claim legal loopholes exist allowing them early access to their pension. There are no such loopholes, however, and these firms charge extortionate fees to their victims. TAX ISSUES YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE You can withdraw a 25% tax-free lump sum from your pension, but taking any more than this percentage will increase your level of income for that tax year. This could mean that you enter a higher rate tax band, and subsequently lose much of the benefit of gaining access to this money. Staged withdrawals of cash may help you reduce your tax bill, but you’ll need professional advice from a pensions expert to find out the most tax-efficient route for you. They may be able to offer alternative options to manage your money better, pay off debt, and maximise your pension savings. WILL IT AFFECT YOUR BENEFITS ENTITLEMENT? If you claim means-tested benefits, withdrawing a lump
sum from your pension could affect your entitlement. It might severely reduce the amounts you receive, or even mean that you can’t make a claim. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and your local council need to be informed if you withdraw money from your pension, so they can make the necessary adjustments with regard to existing and future benefit claims. WHAT ARE THE COSTS OF ACCESSING YOUR PENSION? Many pension providers charge a fee for early access to a pension, and there is generally a charge each time you make a withdrawal. This could severely deplete your pension fund, making it expensive and unrealistic financially to repay debts in this way. FINAL SALARY SCHEMES If you have a final salary pension, you might be tempted to transfer your money into a personal pension scheme that gives you access to withdraw cash. This is likely to offer a poor reward in terms of conversion, however, and also may not provide you with sufficient income in retirement. BE CAREFUL ABOUT PENSION RECYCLING The government has introduced legislation to prevent ‘pension recycling’. This situation occurs when someone uses their pension to pay off debt before they retire, with the intention of replacing their pension money whilst still working.
Use Locally - Partners with Invest Newark & Sherwood, the business arm of NSDC
Use Locally - Issue 49 May 2017 Even if you do not deliberately set out to do this, by withdrawing your pension you could be inadvertently caught out by the pension recycling regulations. For example, if you: • Withdraw over £30,000 from your pension, and as a result: • Receive £7,500 or more taxfree, and then: • Increase your pension contributions by more than 30% The rules apply regardless of whether you pay off debt with the money, and can result in the anticipated ‘tax-free’ sums being taxed by up to 70% by the government. The reason why these rules have been introduced is to prevent people benefiting from taking more than one series of tax-free sums from their pensions, and
as encouragement to save more for retirement. POTENTIAL ALTERNATIVES TO USING YOUR PENSION TO PAY OFF DEBT You may be able to make some small adjustments to your finances that could pay off debt without having to use any pension monies. For instance: • Make a detailed budget – you’ll get a clearer picture of your overall financial situation, and be able to make an informed decision about whether to use your pension. • Cut back on unnecessary expenditure whilst you repay debt. • Use a 0% balance transfer credit card offer to prevent your debt increasing. • Increase your income, and use the extra money to boost debt repayments.

With so many people now expected to live longer, it can be risky to use your pension to pay off debt. Personal circumstances will dictate whether it’s the right move for you, but it’s crucial that you obtain pension advice from an independent financial adviser before taking any action. You’ll be able to find out the ‘bottom line’ figure once the tax, charges, loss of benefits and other potential deductions have been taken into account, and decide whether or not it’s truly worthwhile. https://debtcamel.co.uk/2015pension-changes-a-new-optionfor-paying-off-debts/ https://debtcamel.co.uk/debtspension-recycling-tax/ http://www.moneysavingexpert. com/savings/pension-liberation

The Life List Genteel Gangs Many of us, who grew up on the right side of the tracks, may feel we’ve missed out on heady living and have had to make do with vicarious thrills. Not so much On the Waterfront as on the seafront with a good book. Luckily, senior subcultures are all the rage now. Aga Louts and Rayburners - kitchen living on the edge, where you dry your clothes and cook a hot pot at the same time. Sure to cause the occasional stir. Dude Boys - you may have thinning hair and a bit of a paunch, but you can still wear (elasticated) denim jeans when you drive your
sports car. You’re always in top gear. Gransters - child minding, fun loving, spinclassing dervishes. With added mints. Junk Rockers - you prowl the car boot sale and no Toby jug or James Herriot bargain is safe from your all-seeing eye. Your motto is ‘hagglers not stragglers’. Old Romantics - you favour black & white Ă€OPV VW\OH RYHU IDVKLRQ DQG LQ GHSWK conversations over Snapchat. You don’t need a watch because you are timeless. Sheddy Boys - the man cave is your domain, which you share with the lawnmower, a windup radio and your collection of hoes. The allotment is your stamping ground, mainly to compact the soil. Tantastics - you’ve been to the South of France and you want to let the world know it. (Or you’ve actually been to an out-of-town tanning salon and you just want the world to believe it.) Slug Survival by Pippa Greenwood
Slugs may be small, but as we all know, they have the potential to drive you crazy! Whether you have a massive garden, a tiny plot or even if your gardening is restricted to a few planters in a back yard or on a balcony, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially after dark and when the soil is wet or moist…and that seems to mean most evenings in my garden! Now that spring is here and the weather has really warmed up, they’re out in force, using their tongue-like ‘radula’ (armed with approximately 27,000 tooth-like spikes) to rasp away at our precious plants.
18
Keeled slugs in particular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. This means serious trouble, especially at this time of year when many of us are planting out young plants and seeds are starting to germinate. In no time at all slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process. As seeds germinate in the soil, these little horrors often eat the seedling even before it has had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, as potato tubers swell beneath the soil and carrots start to fatten they will begin to tunnel into these too. To make matters worse, they breed quickly and very HIÀFLHQWO\ ² HDFK VOXJ KDV both male and female organs and in extreme situations
can even fertilise itself. Take a look on the soil surface, beneath drooping foliage and in amongst moist organic matter, and you’re likely to spot the clumps of eggs. Each egg is about 1-2mm in diameter and a clear, milky or off-white coloured sphere. So what can you do with these squidgy little menaces? • Go on an evening slug hunt. In particular, slugs are out in vast numbers after it has rained or you have done some watering, so you can collect up as many as you can. • Choosing resistant varieties of vegetable is worthwhile too. Check seed catalogues and websites for varieties which are marked up as having useful resistance to slugs. With potatoes, main crop varieties usually suffer most, so try to grow mainly earlies. Some varieties are slug disaster zones e.g. Cara, Maris Peer, Kondor and Pentland Crown, but if you choose Charlotte, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja you are in with a much better chance. • Try to encourage natural slug predators such as

But before launching an attack, there is something you should bear in mind – most slugs actually do little damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying PDWHULDO LQFOXGLQJ ÁRSSHG foliage and organic mulches. On the whole, the larger slugs tend to do the least damage to plants as they eat almost exclusively decaying and dead material. It is their smaller cousins like the greyish-black
keeled slug and the pinkishEHLJH JUH\ ÀHOG VOXJ ZKLFK DUH more likely to wreak havoc in \RXU YHJHWDEOH SORW RU ÁRZHU border - they may be small but they are far from innocent. With estimates of about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situation can soon get out of hand.

• Use the Nemaslug nematode control – just dilute as described on the pack and water on to moist soil ZKLFK LV DW Ý& RU DERYH ,W is a treatment I really like because it is harmless to everything except slugs, so pets, wildlife or humans will be safe from any adverse effects. It works swiftly and silently too - you’ll soon see fewer holes appearing in foliage and, if you’re a potato grower and you drench the soil around the potato plants about six weeks before anticipated harvest, the nematodes soon get to work and your potatoes should be virtually slug-damage
free. It is also a brilliant way to clear a slug-infested raised bed or planter; once applied, place self-adhesive copper tape around the rim of the container to keep the contents slug free. The copper tape is really long-lasting, working for years in my experience. <RX FDQ ÀQG RXW PRUH DERXW Nemaslug and copper tape on my website at www. pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops. • Barriers such as crushed shells, wool pellets, soot, pine needles or copperimpregnated fabric can also work well, but some of these may need replacing regularly and results seem to vary from garden to garden and gardener to gardener. 7UDSV ÀOOHG ZLWK EHHU FDQ also be a fantastic way to reduce slug numbers in your garden dramatically and,

Hobbies A Micro-Brew Hobby With Macro Potential By Kate McLelland Late last year a study carried out by a London estate agent showed that microbreweries now outperform the so-called ‘Cappucino Index’ (which measures how many new coffee shops have opened) as an indicator that a neighbourhood is “on the upâ€?. The popularity of microbreweries – small factories set up to produce craft beers, ciders and lagers – is undeniable, but they are simply doing what home brewers have done for years, on a larger scale. Their products capitalise on our love of hand-crafted brews, created for their unique Ă DYRXU DQG FRPSOH[ QRWHV as opposed to the generic and often quite bland styles of the famous brands.
24
Home brew is not just easy on the taste buds: it’s also easy on the wallet. Wherever you travel in the UK, you are likely to pay over £3 for a pint of beer, and in London this rises to almost £4 per pint. Compare this with well under £1 a pint for home brew and you’ll start to realise why this hobby has become so popular. Starting out The simplest way to try your hand at home brewing is to buy a kit. You’ll also need a fermenting bin, some water and a warm place to leave your brew. You can buy kits to match virtually any style of beer, cider or lager. They generally consist of a sachet of dried yeast and one or two cans of concentrated malt extract. The amount of malt extract not only determines the à DYRXU DQG ERG\ RI WKH
Ă€QLVKHG EHHU LW DOVR SURYLGHV the fermentable sugars that produce the alcohol, therefore the more malt you add, the stronger the brew. The ‘fermenting bin’ is a big bucket large enough to contain all the water required in the recipe. A standard 25ltr/40 pint fermenter should easily cope with all your brewing needs, as most beer, cider and lager kits make 36-40 pints. Beer is mostly made of water and different regional styles are the direct result of the water available in the areas in which they are brewed. For example, the soft water found in the Alps is perfect for brewing lagers, while the limescale-rich waters found in Dublin and south-east England are most suitable for porters and stouts. When you are making your own beer, you can either experiment with your local water supply or buy in bottled water (low cost, own-brand VXSHUPDUNHW ZDWHU LV Ă€QH Once the beer kit contents have been combined with water, the mixture is known as ‘wort’.

SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers, started in 1980 with 20 members but it now boasts 850 members in the UK, many of whom started out as home brewers. Rob Witt, who runs a multi award-winning Nottingham microbrewery, acknowledges that brewing at home is the best way to learn. He says: “I have a lot of people coming
to the brewery asking about setting up themselves, but they have never even home brewed. It takes time to XQGHUVWDQG WKH ÀQHU SRLQWV of the process and how the many ingredients taste and can work together.

Yeast is the seemingly magical ingredient that transforms the ingredients LQ \RXU NLW LQWR WKH Ă€QDO product, but it can be temperamental. Many home brewing experiments fail because the temperature is allowed to rise above or fall below the level required. The ‘wort’ blend should reach a temperature of between 18 and 24ÂşC before the yeast is added and while this probably won’t be hard to achieve during the summer, you may need to wrap your fermentation bin in an insulated jacket or use a thermostatic heater to maintain the right temperature in winter. The fermentation process can take between 4-8 days, depending on the
temperature achieved, and is complete when the yeast has converted as much of the sugar as it can to alcohol. Some people choose to ferment under an airlock until the correct ‘gravity’ is reached, while others ferment in a closed container ZLWK D ORRVH Ă€WWLQJ OLG XVLQJ a hydrometer to measure the VSHFLĂ€F JUDYLW\ RI WKH EUHZ This is known as the ‘primary stage’ of brewing and there is a further process to come, in which the beer in transferred into bottles, barrels or a secondary container and allowed to settle for a few days, so the sediment can drop, producing a clearer beer. More sugar (known as ‘priming sugar’) is added to the beer at the bottling stage to improve the brew’s foam,
aroma and taste. The priming process – which ultimately produces the carbonated beer drink we’re all familiar with – typically takes around two weeks and at this stage you’ll need all your reserves of patience to wait until your home brew is ready to drink! If you have any concerns about the way your brew is progressing, there is a wealth of information on the internet, so just go online to take advantage of seasoned brewers’ advice. When the moment to drink your freshly brewed beer, lager or cider arrives, you’ll have a real sense of achievement. You may not feel ready to run a micro-brewery just yet, but you’ll certainly be more popular with your friends and neighbours!

When Those ‘Golden Years’ Are Tarnished By Stress by Kate McLelland The expression ‘golden years’ refers to that period in our lives in between retirement and age-related physical decline, a time when we are supposed to enjoy the greatest quality of life. This view is supported by statistics: last year a survey of more than 300,000 adults by the 2IĂ€FH IRU 1DWLRQDO 6WDWLVWLFV (ONS) found that happiness and life satisfaction peaks between the ages of 65 and 79. In addition to the higher levels of contentment we can expect at this age, many of us can look forward to a comfortable lifestyle. The ONS has also revealed that today’s millionaires are overwhelmingly likely to be from the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964), and 51% of people aged 55 or over in the UK claim to have upwards of ÂŁ500,000 in total wealth. There’s a general assumption that life is easier and sweeter in our later years and statistics do seem to suggest that once ZH SDVV WKH Ă LQW\ PLOHVWRQH of middle age, most of us can 30

But while life is good IRU VRPH RWKHUV PD\ ÀQG the golden lifestyle they had hoped for becomes tarnished by unexpected responsibilities and stress. Ironically, it seems that the older generation’s knack for acquiring wealth and property has been partly responsible for this situation. In these insecure economic times, many grown-up children are staying on in the family home as they save for a place of their own, or relying RQ ÀQDQFLDO KDQGRXWV WR get by. to want to help, but in our rush to support our nearest and dearest it’s easy to ignore the fact that age is creeping up on us. The youthful resilience that once helped us cope with stress starts to ebb away, leaving us more vulnerable to its effects. During a recent study, the Harvard Medical School found that stress has a powerful effect on the human body. When we are stressed the part of the brain that processes emotions such as fear and anger sends out instructions to the body to release the white blood cells XVHG WR ÀJKW LQIHFWLRQ DQG injury). These cells cause LQà DPPDWLRQ RI WKH DUWHULHV and this can lead to angina, heart attacks and strokes if the stress is allowed to continue. Other potentially harmful hormones, equally damaging in the long term, are also released during stressful episodes. Research now suggests that too much stress can suppress the immune system, lead to depression and even shorten lives.

Signs of stress can include feeling overwhelmed, guilty, lonely and constantly anxious, as well as lacking interest in activities you have previously enjoyed. There’s so much more to Florida than just Mickey Mouse Undoubtedly, a family holiday to Orlando can be a magical experience for children of all ages (and their parents). As a Travel Consultant, I book a lot of Florida holidays where the focus is visiting Walt Disney World and, in some cases, staying there, too. And there are so many child-friendly attractions in Orlando, such as Discovery Cove where you can swim with dolphins (if you’re 6 or older), that the whole of your fortnight’s holiday could be spent within a 20-minute bus ride of the Disney resort. Our son, Josh, thought the animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom safari park were “amazing”, and whilst he was blown away by the water slides at Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, best of all he loved pootling down the lazy river in an inflatable ring. But there’s so much more to Florida if only you care to go in search of it. Here’s an example… I recently booked a 3-week holiday in Florida for a family with a 7-year old son, Sam, who’s madkeen on wildlife, so they’re starting off with 3 nights in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge where you can watch zebra and other African plains’ animals grazing on the savannah from the comfort and safety of your own balcony.
Naturally, lions and other predators have their own enclosures. This would have been a nightmare for the family to book themselves as it involves multi centers, varying vehicles and many attraction tickets. For a family to research this and then make the bookings to fit together like a jigsaw, this would involve several hours of their time and possibly numerous visits to a travel agent along with hours of trawling through the internet, to find the most suitable accommodation / tickets / car etc for the experience. Then there is the concern about booking without insurance protection, in these days where many travel companies have gone into liquidation an unprotected holiday is a risk you may not wish to take! With a personal travel consultant on your side, you receive a personal bespoke service, a quality holiday experience to meet your wish list, fully insured and protected, and all that legwork and time spent researching a holiday is done for you, and best of all. provide you with a bespoke 42
holiday trip at a fair price , so it wont cost an extra persons holiday to take advantage of a travel consultants services! Why not give me a call and see what I can do for you and your dream holiday! “what have you got to lose?” Give me a ring or pop me an email, and see just what I can find for you! Bill Ashley, Travel Consultant, Not Just Travel 07966 575784 bill.ashley@notjusttravel.co.uk Testimonial In 2016, Bill arranged a family holiday for Kim H of Wisbech, in Bali with stopovers in Dubai on the way out and on the way back because they were travelling with a 4yr old and a toddler. Kim came to Bill because it was a complex itinerary with multiple flights, accommodation, transfers, plus extras such as car parking at UK airport, all of which had to connect seamlessly. Kim said, "Bill took the stress out of booking this holiday and provided such an excellent service that he's book this year's family holiday which is a fabulous cruise from Southampton to Madeira and the Canaries... In the meantime, Bill also rescued our daughter's last year summer holiday, booked through a cheap bucket shop, when she was left stranded in Corfu with two small children and no hotel. So, thank you Bill!"

Lighter evenings are a great excuse for after-work drinks. Bobbi Brown’s new Sultry Nude Eye and Cheek Palette, £48, is perfect for popping in your handbag ready for cocktail hour. The four eyeshadows have a slight metallic shimmer and the blush suits most skin tones. Easy to apply, with great staying power, the powders are housed in a very lust-worthy gold case. The only downside is the lack of brushes. See www. bobbibrown.co.uk.
A sugar scrub is ideal for exfoliating legs that have been hidden away for months on end. And it’s surprisingly quick and easy to make one at home. Just add around two tablespoons of olive oil to four tablespoons of sugar. You’re aiming for a mixture that’s easy to massage into your skin, but not so liquid that it’ll drip all over your bath mat. The sugar acts as a natural exfoliator, and the olive oil is very moisturising, so it’ll leave your skin feeling much smoother. You can also add extra ingredients to the basic scrub. Honey helps your skin to repair itself and retain

These Boots (and Bodies) Are Made for Walking DGGHG EHQHÀW of nature, tranquillity and fresh air.
May is National Walking Month. It’s hard to believe we need a National Month to promote the default way we move our bodies around, but many of us now walk far less than previous generations did. Yet walking can reduce your risk of disease, improve your physical and mental health, help the environment and improve your social life, too.
50
OTHER BENEFITS OF WALKING Accessibility: Walking can be done anytime and anywhere. You’re not obviously ‘exercising’, either, saving you embarrassment if you’re selfconscious. Social: You can walk with a family member or friend - this time away from the usual distractions can allow you to spend quality time together and enjoy a good

For the very adventurous, waterproof trousers might be handy too. DO Ensure you wear weatherappropriate clothing. THE HEALTH BENEFITS Walking is often underrated as exercise, but it can have a highly positive impact on your health. Regular walking is proven to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, obesity and some cancers, and helps maintain musculoskeletal health. On average, you can burn 400kcal a day by walking 10,000 steps. Choosing to walk instead of using transport reduces pollution, too, potentially boosting everyone’s health. Walking can also lift your mood and help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Countryside walks have the
Luckily, the UV light we absorb while walking can improve our health too. While our skin and eyes do need protection from unhealthy UV exposure, some UV light is essential for good health. It can alleviate depression, help to regulate our body clock and stimulate Vitamin D production. Vitamin D boosts our immune system, aids blood cell formation and helps us absorb calcium and phosphorous, necessary for healthy bones and teeth. The World Health Organisation says 5 to 15 minutes of casual sun exposure of hands, face and arms 2 to 3 times a week during summer is enough to keep vitamin D levels high.
chat. You may also meet other people out and about, and of course, you can always join a local walking group, a local health walk or the Ramblers (previously the Ramblers’ Association). See the links at the end for inspiration. Environmental: Every time we walk to work, school, shops or social activities instead of using transport, we reduce pollution and congestion. This helps the environment and improves the health and safety of ourselves and our families, not just now but in the future, too. Financial: Simple walks on the ÁDW UHTXLUH QR VSHFLDO FORWKHV or equipment. It’s cost-effective exercise that can save you money on travel costs too.

skin can). Talking of your skin, remember to apply sun cream before setting out and take it with you for a reapplication if you’ll be out for some time. DO stay hydrated. Always take a drink, especially on hot days and long or rural walks – you may be a long way from cafĂŠs or shops. DO be prepared; know where you’re going, what weather you can expect and how long the walk will take. Be aware of your personal safety (which may mean telling someone where you’re going), and ensure you take a snack. A charged mobile phone is a good idea too. Do You Want To Be Slim? Did the warmer weather take you by surprise? Was it great and also filled you with angst as you realized that the layers needed to come off and that very soon you need a body that you are happy to reveal? Before you feel stressed as the diet that started in January has not worked, know this. It is NOT your fault. “Diets” fail. Why else would they offer you ‘repeat deals’? So now it is time for some good news. You can have the body you desire. You can kick start it by losing up to 10lbs in 10 days. The key to making your body a fantastic fat-burning machine is to avoid starchy carbohydrates because they make you cling on to fat reserves. They are not ‘enemies’ long term but for at least 10 days you need to avoid them. Beer drinkers and those who over-indulge in bread, pastries and pasta have a big tummy. Carbs cause huge bloating. The hormone insulin plays a vital part as its role is to store fat. It’s almost impossible to lose weight once you have eaten carbs because when you eat any starchy or sugary food your insulin levels go up. If you eat, for example, cereal for breakfast, some carby snack (biscuit in that boring meeting) midmorning, grab a sandwich for lunch, then have another biscuit or crisps mid-afternoon, then when home have pasta for dinner; your body will be constantly making insulin which makes it impossible to lose weight. People with weight problems have a problem with insulin and fat storage that their naturally skinny friends don’t. Their body, based on how we used to have to store fat for ‘later’ (e.g. in times of little food etc.), will store it for a ‘later’ that never comes. This becomes a ‘now’ of weight gain and sluggishness and the diet industry adds a dose of ‘you have failed’ for good measure. You must also cut out dairy because lactose is milk sugar. Avoid salt too as it makes your body tissues store fluid. Also, remember booze is full of sugar and it, not fat, is not your friend. You can get Apps that tell you how many calories drinks have if you do want to indulge, but perhaps for 10 days just give yourself a gift and cut if all out. Also eat large enough meals to not feel hungry; snacking is the enemy. Have a fist-sized amount of protein, 2-3 fistfuls of veggies, four of salad and a palm-sized amount of nuts at main meals. Drink lots of water and green tea as it is proven to burn body fat, especially around the waist. “But it is so hard to know what to choose in the supermarket/out for lunch etc. I hear you cry”. Well here is an easy to remember checklist for being Slim Forever: 1. Eat from the 4 RS and you will eat food that your body can digest and burn off: l Only eat food that grows or Roams – nothing
processed or refined (Unilver has just pulled out of the major margarine market: it knows the writing is on the wall) l Only eat food that you could eat Raw – you don’t have to eat it raw but if you could is it digestible? l Only eat food that you Recognise as a natural food – margarine is not food l Only eat food that Rots – if nature can’t break it down neither will your body 2. Never eat late at night. Our bodies are still like those of cavemen. Primitive man got up with the light and retired as it got dark as there was nothing else to do. Eating too much and too late at night leaves our bodies full of undigested food. Our metabolism slows down dramatically at night even if we are wide awake because nature assumes we’re sleeping. Our heart rate slows down which makes digestion more difficult. 3. Limit variety. We need to eat a varied diet but too much variety at mealtimes causes overeating which causes weight gain. Too much variety makes us fat because we gain weight when our appetite drives us to eat too much so we don’t know when to stop.

Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest %0: WKH *HUPDQ Ă€UP KDV ever made, if you’re after a Ă€UH EUHDWKLQJ IXOO EORRGHG 0 FDU WKH 0 /L ZLOO OHDYH you a little disappointed. You see, it may have that IDEOHG WUL FRORXU EDGJH RQ LWV ERRW EXW WKLV LVQ¡W FXW IURP WKH VDPH FORWK DV DQ M2, M3 or M4. BMW says WKDW¡V EHFDXVH WKLV LV D FDU for buyers with something of a split personality. buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for as throttle response is quickened, gear changes swifter and the whole car feels more taught and agile in bends when its sport setting is active. Flick back to the comfort setting and it’s a different story – mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps DQG Ă RDWV DORQJ EHDXWLIXOO\ ,W¡V an impressive dichotomy. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone, though. There are some gaudy chrome touches and in the matt grey it looks, dare we say it, a little common. Inside, however, it’s a wonderful place to spend time. Buyers in the UK will predominantly drive themselves, but for those that do get chauffeured around the back seats are arguably more
comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs. SPACE AND PRACTICALITY The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, with controls wrapped around you, but it’s easy to get settled and comfortable. WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. And since WKDW ÀUVW XQLW DUULYHG LQ LQ the 7 Series, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power. The 2017 6.6-litre unit now boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it

to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made – not bad for a model that’s not even a ‘proper’ M car. All that grunt does mean you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.
impressive in the way it’s kept under control. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when it’s needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, especially for track ZRUN EXW à LFN LW LQWR VSRUW DQG it’s far better.
BEHIND THE WHEEL The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. We tried the M760Li on the WUDFN ÀUVW $OWKRXJK WKH ORQJ sweeping bends and snooker table smooth surfaces weren’t going to show off the car in anything other than the best light, it was incredibly swift for such a lump. That V12 makes a pleasingly sound and while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive and, for a car of this size, actually rather
VALUE FOR MONEY At £132,310, you’d expect to get some goodies thrown in, and fortunately you do. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a headup display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. How very generous. Naturally there’s an extensive options
list. Executive lounge seating to make rear passengers even more comfortable, night vision and BMW laser headlights are just a few of those you can tick. VERDICT For petrol heads, the fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a revelation. In a world where downsizing is the buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be - and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Citizens Advice launches new money-saving project Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark are looking forward to helping local people be better off with their new project funded by National Lottery, through the Big Lottery Fund. The new £10,000 project aims to save participating individuals or families at least £500 each in a year. Lesley Barrick, Advice Services Manager, says, “Anyone who would like to take part in this project is welcome to get in touch with us directly. We are also trying to get the message out through local support organisations such as Sure Start, schools, or community groups so that we can reach as many people as possible.” All participants can expect an individual appointment during which they will be helped to carry out a review of their income and outgoings - to identify what gains can be made and how. Participants will be offered support to take action or make any changes, with follow-up help for those that need it. Lesley explains, “We will look at each case individually to make sure the help we offer is achievable and realistic. We will look at household bills to see if people can get better deals, access to grants or potential income entitlement. Some people may have money worries and need help to manage outstanding debt. Others may come to us as a precaution to prevent
Sherwood & Newark problems from happening in future. Families might want to take advantage of the project to help them find
money for a future event, or to get their children involved and practising any money management skills they have learned in school. We are excited to see the range of options we can find to help people to save money – and to find what tips people may want to share!”
Anyone interested in participating in Citizens Advice Sherwood and Newark’s Living Well for Less project can get more information at a drop-in advice session or call 01623 861769 to request a call back. Drop-in advice sessions are from 9.30 am until 2.30 pm on Tuesday and Thursday at Keepers Cottage, Riverside Park, Newark, NG24 1BL or on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at 5 Forest Court, Ollerton, NG22 9PL. For telephone advice, call 0344 411 1444 (available 10 am until 4 pm).

Three Types Of Food That Are Poisonous To Your Dog If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devastating effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, often requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, high WHPSHUDWXUH LUUHJXODU KHDUW UK\WKP DQG ÀWWLQJ Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary intervention even when a small amount has been consumed. in dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form - even something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reaction in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which attack the red blood cells over a period of time. After a few days you might notice your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly. Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no ill-effects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days after ingestion. https://www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/ poisons-and-hazards http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/605397/ poisons.pdf
