The Better Life May Day Foraging by Derek Thompson The 1st of May usually means one thing in our house - a trip to the Obby Oss festival at Padstow, on Cornwall’s north coast. It’s generally a glorious day, especially when it doesn’t fall on a weekend or a bank KROLGD\ OHVV WUDIÀF We like to get to Padstow early and soak up the atmosphere. SPOTLIGHT ON
Grace Gentle NEWARKS
TREASURE
Grace Gentle is rapidly becoming a Newark treasure. Nestled across the road from the castle, (fabulous views while you shop), tucked inside a shared doorway with the Danube restaurant is a stylish and welcoming emporium of delightful and exclusive design. Denise Starkey shared her reasons for bringing elegance to Newark, with the story behind the name of the shop‌ “The inspiration came from my grandmother, Grace Gentle, an elegant lady who had an amazing impact on my life. Now sadly passed away, her name will live on in this company dedicated to her, and the wonderful memories she gave me of a warm, loving and beautiful home I used to visit often. As her only grand-daughter, and a single mother to three children, who are now growing up, and getting ready to "flee the nest", my thoughts turned to my own childhood and the times I spent marveling at the beautiful home my grandmother created, and my own passion for interior design. And then one evening, over the kitchen table, I got this amazing idea, what if I could bring something together that I love, with something we all need - home accessories and 8

But its not just the exclusive range of jewelry by Dansk Smykkekurst or the Stoneglow Candles hand made in the UK and with scents that make you feel you have gone to heaven, or the Leslie Gerry Spaniel mugs, coasters, cards & notebooks, that speak to you as you wander around, there is a sense of Grace in the shop too. There are not many places where you feel as though you are visiting a favorite friend, however Denise has managed superbly to ensure that is exactly how

Sleep: You Can Do It With Your Eyes Closed By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk Sleep is supposedly involuntary. So we take it for granted when we can sleep, and often ignore it when we can’t. But we shouldn’t. Research has proved that sleep is as important to our health as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration and reaction times, and long-term it can affect language processing, planning abilities and our sense of time. Some sleep disorders can contribute to serious health problems. So what stops us getting the sleep we need, and how can we improve the quantity and quality of our sleep? Our sleep has recurring cycles of around 100 minutes, starting with Non-REM sleep. Non-REM (non rapid eye movement) sleep progresses from Stage One (light sleep), through Stages Two and Three (when heart rate and breathing drop) to Stage Four’s deep sleep (when bed-wetting, night terrors or sleepwalking occurs). REM (rapid eye movement) sleep (dream time) follows. Our brain is active, breathing and blood pressure rise, and our eyes move; but we can’t move our bodies. Afterwards, the cycle restarts. Sweet Dreams aren’t made of this. Enemies of good sleep include pain; the need to urinate; stress or depression; the menstrual cycle (hormonal changes affect temperature 12
and melatonin production), the menopause and snoring. There are also sleep disorders, including night terrors; sleep walking, talking and paralysis; teeth grinding; restless limb syndrome; and the more serious sleep apnoea (which can starve the brain of oxygen). To help you sleep soundly: • Eliminate Physical Factors Cure snoring with nasal strips, sprays or minor surgery. See your doctor about physical or mental health issues and sleep disorders; they may recommend Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or sleeping tablets. PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome) treatments may help if you sleep badly before a period. • Drink Warm Milk - Eat a carbohydrate-rich snack beforehand to improve WKH HIÀFDF\ RI WKH PLON·V tryptophan (a raw material for the sleep hormone melatonin). Milk may help by making you feel warm and full too. • Don’t Go to Bed Hungry Avoid large, late meals but have a light snack if you’re hungry. • Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine in the Evening, and Stop Smoking - Caffeine is a stimulant and will keep you awake. Alcohol makes you sleepy, but impairs sleep quality – as does nicotine. • Get enough Sunlight and Exercise - Light and exercise help regulate our body clock and mood, so try to spend
time outside and get regular exercise. • Avoid Light in the Evening However, bright light before bedtime will suppress melatonin secretion, so dim the lights. Either avoid TVs, laptops, tablets and smart phones within two hours of bedtime, or turn down their brightness settings (some screens have a night mode). • Establish a Routine Establish a relaxing routine before bed. Avoid watching TV in the bedroom or reading anything too emotionally charged or terrifying. • Make your Bedroom a Haven - Avoid using your bedroom as a work or dump space; clutter will nag to be cleared up. Ensure your bedroom is well ventilated, dark, and not too hot or cold. Consider earplugs to eliminate noise, and invest in a really comfy mattress (try before you buy). • Declutter your Brain Download your brain by jotting down tomorrow’s jobs and any worries (particularly therapeutic if you write a positive action beside them). • Have A Warm Bath Before Bed - Add relaxing bath oils, too. • Try not to worry about it Worrying about lack of sleep could start a vicious circle. If you can’t sleep, leave the bedroom and do something absorbing but calm: read a magazine or do a jigsaw until you feel sleepy.

Pre-nuptial agreements – a case for reform The Law Commission, a statutory independent body that advises on law reform, has recently published its long-awaited consultation paper Marital Property Agreements in particular considering pre-nuptial agreements. A growing number of couples are already signing pre-nuptial agreements dealing with what they want to happen to their finances in the event their marriage should break down as a way of minimising uncertainty. And not just the rich and famous! Many more people want to consider and plan their arrangements particularly if they are marrying for the second or third time, have unequal capital or income or there are children However, despite a historic Supreme Court judgment last year of Radmacher v Granatino they are still not binding under English law. The question is should couples be allowed to enter into a binding agreement preventing the court using its discretionary power in their financial arrangements. The Commission also considered whether such agreements should be able to deal with all of a couple's property or to contain only terms relating to preacquired, gifted or inherited property termed as "Community of Acquests". This type of asset is often the cause of dispute between couples as they have generally been passed to only one party to the marriage. The paper looked at the formalities that might be required for an agreement to be a qualifying nuptial agreement. It considered the introduction of standard formulas to help resolve disputes over financial settlements and publication of official guidance on what constitutes legitimate "financial needs". Formulae are already used successfully in other countries, where they produce a guideline range of outcomes within which couples can negotiate. The Law Commission's proposals will now be sent to the Ministry of Justice, who will examine whether it wishes to draw up legislation on the basis of the suggestions. The outcome is awaited with interest.

Real Time Information (RTI) in its second year
A DAY
Help with your accounts, book keeping and payroll by qualified friendly professionals
Micro businesses have been granted additional time to comply with HMRC’s new RTI reporting requirements – good news.Normally employers with small businesses must submit their RTI report on or before the day of payment, there has been temporary relaxation of this regulation for the first year for employers with less than 50 employees who pay weekly and find it difficult to report at the time of payment. They must submit by the end of the tax month instead. This relaxation of the rules was due to come to an end in April 2014 but HMRC have decided to extend it to April 2016 giving small companies more time to prepare for RTI. This concession does not apply to new business start-ups during this period.

Raising awareness of fostering across the UK Foster Care Fortnight, the biggest annual campaign for raising awareness of fostering across the UK run by the Fostering Network, is a time for fostering services to celebrate foster carers, their families and to find the next generation of incredible and dedicated foster carers. With more children coming into care every year fostering services from across the UK want to hear from people who may have the skills and qualities needed to ensure that a vulnerable child, or young person, can have the stability, security and support they need at a crucial time in their lives. Being a foster carer isn’t just about providing a roof and regular meals. Being a foster carer is a professional vocation where people use the skills they have developed throughout their lives to make a real difference to the children and young people in local communities who need it most. Every child that comes into care is an individual with their own specific needs. They may need short-term, or long-term care, they may have a disability or have brothers and sisters who need to be placed with them. As each fostered child, aged six months or older, requires their own bedroom there is a huge need for those who have the space in their homes and their
hearts to care for them. There are many ways of getting further information to see if this is right for you. Fostering is fast becoming a recognised professional career and is a career that gives great job satisfaction. Foster Care Associates are a private fostering agency with, professional back up and offer their carers huge support and training. Working for an agency such as FCA gives the carer a network of other carers, specialist workers and the opportunity to work with various different types of placement such as mother and baby, emergency or respite amongst others.

Wheely Good Gadgets
We spend a lot of time driving, and there are stacks of gadgets that promise to make our trips more entertaining and less frustrating. One of the best in-car gadgets you can buy is a satellite navigation system. The days of devices with limited features and dodgy maps are long gone, and modern kit such as the £109 Garmin Nuvi 2408 comes with free, unlimited WUDIÀF LQIRUPDWLRQ WR ZDUQ \RX of accidents, roadworks and other problems. The device ZLOO KHOS \RX ÀQG WKH ULJKW ODQH when you’re on the motorway, and it even has photographic views so that you can compare what you should be seeing with what you can see through the windscreen. Many highend models also double as Bluetooth hands-free kits for your phone, and we’re starting to see heads-up displays such as the £129 Garmin HUD where everything you need is projected onto the windscreen. One of the most popular in-car gadgets is a replacement stereo. Even relatively cheap stereos such as Sony’s £89 MEX-BT3100U come with Bluetooth connectivity and iPod compatibility, and a growing number of audio units now have DAB digital radios as well as the traditional FM radio.
24
In many cases the gap between in-car equipment and tablet computers is beginning to blur. Take Pioneer’s terribly named AVH-X3500 DAB car radio, for example: it boasts a 6.1-inch touch screen, built-in Bluetooth, displays video and even runs apps. It also demonstrates something else about the in-car gadget market, which is that prices fall very dramatically very quickly. The Pioneer’s RRP is £479, but it’s already widely available for £299. If you’re thinking that a 6.1-inch screen sounds rather large for an in-car device, you are right: the Pioneer is a double-DIN system, which means it takes up twice as much space as a standard car radio. Many cars already accept double-DIN systems, but if your car has an unusually shaped dashboard or uses a single DIN space you may also need to buy a doubleDIN adapter. In-car entertainment needn’t be limited to the front of the car either. You can easily keep the kids quiet with a portable DVD system, with standalone models costing as little as £35 (although you’ll also need to invest in a headrest harness unless you want your child to hold the player for the full trip). Around £90 gets you a player VSHFLÀFDOO\ GHVLJQHG IRU LQ FDU
use with all the necessary harnesses, with twin-screen systems starting at around £129. Another option for in-car use is a tablet. Cheaper tablets such as Tesco’s Hudl (£119), Google’s Nexus 7 (£199) or Apple’s iPad Mini (£249) make excellent video players, and they don’t suffer from the scratched discs or skipping that can plague in-car DVD systems. Expect to pay an additional £15 to £25 for a headrest mount, and remember to take the tablet out of the car when you stop: a visible tablet is a very tempting target for opportunist thieves. While in-car gadgets can be handy, you’ll often encounter one downside: more gadgets than you have power sockets for. The good news is that’s easy to address with a multisocket adapter. £7.99 will get you an adapter that gives you two cigarette lighter sockets instead of one, or spend £14.99 on an adapter that turns the cigarette lighter socket into two USB ports. Some adapters offer both kinds of sockets, enabling you to charge almost anything. What Actually is Induction Cooking? Every day here at the Discount Appliance Centre, the one question asked more often than any other by our customers is ‘What are induction hobs?’ Induction cooking is based on magnetic fields. Each induction coil under the ceramic surface of the hob generates a magnetic field that induces heat onto a ferrous (magnetic) material based pan. In essence the pot or pan becomes the element that cooks the food. Energy efficiency is maximised & heat loss is minimised as only the base of the pan is heated. The obvious comparison that always comes up is against gas hobs; Which is quicker? Gas or Induction? An average induction hob can take a pan of cold water to the boil in approximately 60-90 seconds! Gas usually takes between 3-4 minutes. Which is more controllable? The main reason for choosing a gas hob over an original ceramic Hob was for the single fact of much more responsive temperature Control. However, induction is much quicker than gas, when wanting to take something from the boil down to a simmer for example. Which is easier to clean? Anyone who has a gas hob will agree that if you spill something over on to it while cooking it is nothing short of a nightmare to clean, and after a year or so of use, the hob will start to look very much used & tired. With a ceramic induction hob, because any spillages are going on to a flat glass surface, on wipe is all you need. And Because the surface area not in contact with the pan is cold, there won’t be any nasty burnt on rings on the hob. What about safety? An induction hob will only heat up the surface area that is in direct contact with something magnetic, so if the hob is turned on by accident, by a child for example, if there are no pans on the hob then quite simply nothing will happen, as the hob will recognise that there is no pan to heat up. So as you can see, induction cooking pretty much trumps gas hobs at every level, and with new innovative concepts such ‘multi-zone cooking’ and flexInduction now available, the range of induction hobs available would suit any kitchen, and more importantly any Customer. Storage Great storage is just as important in a bathroom as any other room in the house; sometimes even more so. Where are you going to keep towels, toilet rolls, bottles RI FOHDQLQJ à XLGV UD]RUV and a whole host of other (mostly unsightly) things? Fitted storage, either from a bathroom supplier or made for you by a joiner is ideal if you can afford it (though of course you can’t take it with you if you plan to move house). Alternatively, there are plenty of less expensive options. A wooden chest or blanket box, for example, could double as both a seat and towel store, while a wall-mounted shelf could be the perfect place to stack lotions and potions. In a large bathroom, a chest of drawers keeps all your bits and bobs in one place, while in a small room a metal rack
on wheels combines both function and style.
Lighting Give your bathroom a boost with a new lighting VFKHPH $OZD\V XVH ÀWWLQJV designed for wet and steamy conditions, and combine task lights (for shaving and putting on make-up) with general background light. Introducing Luxury Decorative Paints Newark Paint & Hardware are pleased to announce the arrival of a new product to the UK market, known as luxury decorative paints, which are all readily available from Newark Paint & hardware. Imagine a painted wall that almost looks like a lava flow; one that twinkles with reflected light like a thousand tiny stars; one of scratched stone or a granite effect in any colour imaginable... and these are just a few of the myriad of effects that can be created with Luxury Decorative Paints. Manufactured in Sicily in the shadow of Mount Etna these magnificent paints are now available in the UK through Nikkolor UK Ltd, based in Lincoln. One of the ranges of product, Diadema, was tested and reviewed by the Award Winning Decorator Wayne de Wet in the February edition of The Decorator (the journal of the Painting & Decorating Association). “There are many designs and patterns that can be created”, Wayne said “and the finished result with the metallic paint is incredible. It looks amazing as the reflection of light catches the broken colour effect and all the different textures are revealed”. • Most paints can be applied by brush or roller • Products are environmentally and user friendly • The range of colours and finishes can be mixed to exact specifications, giving clients almost limitless design possibilities

RAF Waddington International Air Show
Use Locally - Issue 12 May 2014
The Return of the
Avro Vulcan The Organisers of the RAF Waddington International Air Show are thrilled to announce that the iconic Avro Vulcan Bomber B2 XH558 will return to Waddington in July to perform its magnificent display in front of more than hundred thousand visitors over the Air Show weekend of 5th & 6th July.
T
he Avro Vulcan was designed in the late 1940's by the same team that built the Avro Lancaster. It is a jet-powered delta wing <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Delta_wing> strategic bomber <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S trategic_bomber> which was operated by the Royal Air Force during the Cold War as a nuclear strike platform. Although the Vulcan was originally armed with nuclear weapons, it was capable of conventional bombing
missions, a capability which was used in Operation Black Buck during the Falklands War. The RAF retired the Vulcan in 1984 but XH558 was kept active for flying displays until 1992. XH558 is the only flying Vulcan in the world and is also the oldest complete Vulcan anywhere. She represents over 300 bombers which made up the UK's contribution to the NATO strategy of deterrence. The Vulcan is now an inspiring tribute to the
hundreds of thousands of dedicated service men and women who maintained and flew the aircraft.
This much loved aircraft, ‘The Spirit of Great Britain’, as she is affectionately known by the public, returned proudly to the public domain at the RAF Waddington International Air Show in July 2008 and has performed in front of millions of spectators all over the country since then. During 2014 Vulcan To The Sky Trust (VTST) will be commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the end of the Cold War, with the Vulcan being the centrepiece as the last flying example of the V-Force.

Use Locally - Issue 12 May 2014 Saturday back in July 2008." "This is a great opportunity for us to say a very big thank you to all of XH558's loyal supporters who have stayed with her through thick and thin, because without their unstinting help we would not be where we are today. We are incredibly grateful that the Vulcan is appearing once again at this famous RAF
The XH558 s eagerlyanticipated, performance will be a significant addition to the display programme that already includes an array of aircraft from the RAF, Royal Navy and Army Air Corps, with spectacular displays lead by the RAF Red Arrows and the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. A number of foreign military display aircraft have also already confirmed their attendance, including a debut by the Spanish helicopter display team ‘Patrulla ASPA’, the thunderous Swiss Air Force ‘Hornet’ Solo Display and a special display by the Slovak Air Force with their Albatross L-39 training aircraft, specially decorated to commemorate Czechoslovak pilots who fought in the RAF during the Second World War. RAF Waddington International Air Show Director, Sqn Ldr Paul Sall (Rtd) said: “This year’s display is shaping up really well, with an exciting line up already confirmed. I am really delighted that the XH558, such a favourite of the crowd, will also display this year. There is no doubt that
this iconic aircraft, which was once stationed here at RAF Waddington, will once again create the ‘Vulcan Effect’, thrilling thousands of our spectators at the Show this year.” Dr Robert Pleming, Chief Executive of the VTST said: "I'm delighted that all of the hard work carried out over the winter by the VTST team, supported by many other companies, will now enable us to return XH558 to the 2014 RAF Waddington International Air Show. It is of course highly appropriate that the aircraft is making a return to RAF Waddington, where she was based for many years in a variety of roles, including her final one as the display aircraft for the Vulcan Display Flight, before her retirement from RAF service in March 1993." "It was of course at Waddington where XH558 made her high-profile and emotional return to public displays on an unforgettable
Station, giving people, particularly those who have not seen her before, the chance to experience the incredible spectacle of this truly iconic and much-loved aircraft." To find out about the many ways that you can help to support Vulcan XH558 visit www.vulcantothesky.org. This year’s RAF Waddington International Air Show will celebrate a number of milestones in the RAF history, including the Red Arrows’ 50th Display Season, 65th Anniversary of NATO, 70 years since the D-Day Landings and commemoration of the start of the First World War. Ticket sales began in November and are showing over 30% increase in sales from this time last year.

The Award Winning Haveli Restaurant We spent one Sunday afternoon, enjoying the food at the award winning Indian restaurant, Haveli, on the Newark bound side of the A52 Nottingham to Newark road. It’s a quick 20 minute journey to the restaurant and it is really worth the drive. Suraj greeted us on arrival, dressed in an authentic costume and showed us to our table, where the napkins are folded to resemble peacocks, in wine glasses. Our meal was delicious, and the service was excellent, we ordered from the menu and both Suraj and Simon were happy to discuss the dishes at the table, and offer recommendations. The menu has a wide range of dishes and so many looked delicious, we really found it hard to choose which to try. Lamb chops have been a long
time favorite of mine for a starter and I had never tried curried fish before so Simon recommended the Tandoori Sea Bass. We also sampled the Prawn Puri and the Tandoori King Prawn, along with a lamb curry that was just divine. I’m quite particular about my Indian food, mainly due to having spent a lot of time with
an Indian family and having the luxury of home cooked curry available as often as I wanted, and Haveli surpassed my experience and expectation. If you don’t try Haveli and take advantage of the special offer for Use Locally readers, then I can only assume you don’t like really good food! Let me speak plainly, this is a restaurant to add to your bucket list! Price wise it was a reasonable £30 a head for a 3 course meal with soft drinks and coffee. For a special occasion the ambience is lovely, with lake views and if you are looking for a nice meal to take out someone to impress, then this restaurant is the one to go to. Darin and Bublé for good measure. At 6pm, Bird and Saunders offer a rare treat. With cv’s like a Who’s Who of the jazz world, Roger Bird’s delicate clarinet and sax tone will punctuate the breathy vocals and piano-playing of Newark’s adopted son, from Mobile, Alabama, Chris Saunders. The ticketed fun starts on Saturday evening with an exceptional New Orleans All Stars line-up playing, stomping, good time music. Trombonist Mike Owen, drummer Ray Bowden, Chris Saunders on bass and the legendary John Crocker of Chris Barber fame on sax and clarinet join Newark’s Andrew Hall on piano, for the first and - possibly – only time together on one stage. Unmissable.

Why not call in to our coffee mornings, which are held on the first Thursday of every month from 10am–12pm People always tell me they feel right at home as soon as they step through the door at Lancaster Grange, and that's music to my ears. After all, we pride ourselves on our genuine warmth and friendliness – it's all part of the first-class care and support that we provide to the people of Newark. We have a range of services and facilities for all care needs, including: • Dementia care • Nursing care • Activities programme • Respite and Daycare • Residential care • Beautiful gardens
If you fancy a look around our home, or just need a bit of friendly advice, give me a call on 01636 880 626
