Is Spring really around the corner? Well I know Easter is – late this year but never the less its making its way towards us! Are you Easter Egging it this year or choosing healthy alternatives? Once you have made your decision instead of reaching for the nearest Easter Egg in the local supermarket, how about popping into your local independent shop to buy those gifts? A few minutes of your time, making a trip to an independent makes a difference to that shop owner. If we all made a point of buying our Easter Eggs or gifts from locally owned shops how great would that be – can you give it a try? Buy your Easter lunch from the local butcher, make sure its from a local farm.... I know how easy it is to just reach for it when you are at the supermarket, to pop it in the trolley and its done... But really,... Who benefits from you spending your hard earned money at the big chains? Do you? Does it make the local economy thrive? Do the bosses of the supermarket frequent your shop in return or use your services. How about just this Easter we buy all our Eggs or gifts from independents, then we can look a few months later at the dofference that might make to our local community. We had a great Crufts! My little Scarlet won her class and my baby Flame got a 4th in her class. My amazing Wally was unplaced, in an exceptionally strong Open class – all doing me proud and priving that red poodles are on the up! Enjoy Easter!

SHOP LOCAL, BUY LOCAL, LIVE LOCAL!
I
wonder how many of us shop at the last minute for an event, or are we all impulse buyers? I think i’m a bit of both, although I have to say I am a bit “bah humbug” sometimes about clothes shopping! I tend to lose patience with myself, I cant stand crowds and I get to a point where im hot and bothered (even in deepest winter!) and just feel like going home! Often empty handed and end up rewearing something I had in the wardrobe! So its a fabulously wonderful experience shopping in many of our local independent shops, because it really does matter to the shop owner if my visit ends with a sale. I like the extra attention and the advice as to how something looks on me, and rarely do I ask, Does my bum look big in this! But seriously, shopping in a local independent means that I usually get better service,

because they want me to come back and shop again, and they want the recommendations that may come from me even if I don’t purchase this time. Independent shop owners, really value the connection, the relationship that they build with their clients, its a longer term relationship, they aren't here today and gone tomorrow. I have always found that I am more likely to get real service from a shop owner. There are many wonderful, niche independents in Newark, we are so lucky to have more shops than Meadowhall – did you know that? And to have such a vast array of offers, it speaks well of the rich diversity for our retail therapy. There's always something to find that is the perfect gift for a loved one or a special handbag ( don’t get me started on handbag collecting - that's a whole other article!) or a beautiful scarf! 6 months ago Lucky Secret Boutique opened at 29 Wilson Street, next to the beautiful St Mary Magdalene Church. You may remember them from being in the Arcade! Petit Versailles in Stodman street is another highly talented independent, Newark is lucky to attract someone who has worked for such prestigious names as Vivienne Westwood, Jaeger and Alexander Macqueen, its a wonderful treasure trove of unique finds, and drop off your items for alterations here too, make that beautiful loved dress that's sitting in your cupboard unloved, wearable again, refashion your wedding dress into something you can wear again or even a christening gown. This is truly somewhere to leave your treasured clothing items for remodeling and refitting. Far better than sitting at the back of the spare wardrobe getting old and dusty. Think about the amazingly popular Marie Kondo and her theory of “does it bring you joy?” Maybe wearing your wedding dress again would do that for you?

One LPA or Two LPAs? That is the question… Written by Honey Group The mainstream media generally seems to place greater emphasis on the financial implications of not having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place but should the “Health and Welfare” LPA really be the poor relation? With two different LPAs available, which is more important to you, “Property and Finance” or “Health and Welfare”? Many people now understand the advantages of making an LPA that helps to keep their Property and Financial Affairs in order but fewer people seem to fully appreciate the benefits of making a Health and Welfare LPA. What if I lose mental capacity and don’t have a Health & Welfare LPA? Your family members and loved ones are likely to not have a say in how you live or are cared for: • Social Services may have to take the lead in making decisions about where you should live and what care you will receive. • Only your legal next of kin would be consulted about decisions regarding resuscitation and life sustaining treatment. And even though they are talked to, it still does not mean they will have the final say. • Decisions may have to be made by the Court of Protection, rather than by the people you would choose. This will be an
expensive and timeconsuming process. How can a Health and Welfare LPA be used if I have one? Unlike a Property and Finance LPA, a Health and Welfare LPA can only ever be used if you have lost the mental capacity to make such decisions yourself. With this LPA in place, your chosen attorneys have the power to make decisions about things like: • your daily routine, for example washing, dressing, eating • medical care • moving into a care home • life-sustaining treatment With a growing number of Britons suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s,
careful planning is needed to make sure that you would have the right people making decisions on your behalf if the need arises. In the absence of a Health and Welfare LPA you run the risk of having strangers making decisions about your personal welfare, even if your friends or relations know far better what your choices would have been. In short, only by having both LPAs in place, can you make sure that your wishes in as many aspects of life as possible are always going to be taken into consideration. Contact Honey today so that our experienced team can guide you through the process.

Spring Into Pattern Sweetly pretty or boldly dramatic, pattern has the potential to transform any room. From simple geometrics to the catwalk-inspired ‘matchy matchy’ look of all-over pattern, eye-catching patterns seem to be everywhere at the moment. Including pattern brings character to a home, but it may not seem easy to do. Get inspiration from the form of something you own, such as a painting, vase or throw, or from images in magazines, books and websites. Then think about your pattern partiality. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours, or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small? Historical prints or modern? Patterns are also subtly present, such as in the weave of fabric or basketry or the grain of timber and should
not be overlooked. Consider where pattern is appropriate: as a subtle element within a room, such as a small blind or a cushion cover; or all-out, from ZDOOV DQG ¿RRU WR IDEULFV DQG accessories. In bigger rooms, use very large-scale patterns for impact, while mediumor small-scale patterns are generally better in smaller URRPV ° WKRXJK žOOLQJ D WLQ\ room (e.g. a WC) with a giant pattern can make a feature of it.
Create a mood board using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint Start simple, with just a dash of a single pattern, if you
are worried about mixing patterns. When combining two or more patterns, the professional pattern books from fabric and wallpaper manufacturers can help to see which patterns work together. To introduce greater variety, create a mood board using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint, and cut-out images of furnishings. Place the dominant pattern žUVW ° SHUKDSV WKH EULJKWHVW or the one with the largest scale – and add others from there. Swap items in and out, or change their proportions, until it looks right. For patterns that co-ordinate, complementary colours are key. Lighter and darker versions of the same hue work well together and provide a pleasing variety. A variety of scales also adds interest and impact. Remember that very smallscale patterns are only really noticeable close up, so are a subtle scheme element. Next: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. A variety of densities gives balance and interest. And žQDOO\ GHVLJQ $EVWUDFW žJXUDWLYH UHWUR WUDGLWLRQDO modern – there’s something for everyone, and a coherent mix of patterns will make a room seem like it has evolved naturally over time. March 21st - April 20th
24th - August 23rd
November 23rd - Dec 21st
You want to take on a different role at the beginning of April, but there are people around you hoping to block your path. The New Moon on the 5th makes you fully aware of the conservative attitudes and stuffy restraints that are holding you captive. On the 19th, someone close to you and trusted will come to your rescue. Accept their offer to expand your horizons.
Legal problems could block your path at the beginning of the month. The New Moon on the 5th warns against breaking the rules. You'll fare much better colouring inside the lines than defying authority. On the 19th, the Full Moon will prompt you to put some newly acquired skills to use. Your knowledge will attract a creative opportunity.
On the 5th, the New Moon creates drama in your love life. Financial difficulties could be taking a toll on your union. Instead of sniping at each other about money matters, go to a counsellor. The Full Moon on the 19th is ideal for attending a party or gathering. There's a good chance you'll meet someone who finds you utterly charming.
TAURUS
VIRGO
CAPRICORN
April 21st - May 21st
August 24th - Sept 23rd
December 22nd - Jan 20th
The New Moon on the 5th finds you butting heads with an expert who wants to take all the credit for your hard work. Staying in this situation will make it impossible to advance. It's time to start looking for a better situation. On the 19th, the Full Moon will help you wrap up a work project that attracts lots of favourable publicity. Use this achievement to move into a better job.
On the 5th, the New Moon will put strain on relationships bound by money. If you're embroiled in a custody battle, you'll have to fight to get funds for a child's wellbeing. To protect your interests, it may be best to get a job that can sustain you through this difficult period. The Full Moon on the 19th will improve your economic situation.
GEMINI
LIBRA
May 22nd - June 21st
September 24th - Oct 23rd
A stressful New Moon on the 5th warns against lending or borrowing money. Coming to a troubled person's rescue won't resolve their problems. This troubled person has to answer for their behaviour. Don't feel pressured to pay a fine or cover a bill. On the 19th, the Full Moon will showcase your creative talent.
The New Moon on the 5th creates tension in your personal life. If you're in a relationship, your other half will embarrass you with their wild and rebellious ways. You resent having to apologise for their boorish behaviour. The Full Moon on the 19th further emphasises the importance of satisfying your own needs. Use this opportunity to take a college course for pleasure.
CANCER
SCORPIO
June 22nd - July 23rd
October 24th - Nov 22nd
On the 5th, the New Moon will attract a problematic career opportunity. Although you're eager to advance, you don't want to work with a famously toxic executive. Instead of subjecting yourself to their abuse, hold out for a better offer. Your path will become clearer after the 19th, when the Full Moon will help you sew up a real estate matter.
Things will be especially tense near the 5th, when a stressful New Moon causes a clash of egos. Some people will ask you to do perform tasks a certain way and others will denigrate your methods. You have no intention of getting drawn into a power struggle. On the 19th, the Full Moon urges you to take a break. Sneaking off to a private hideaway will allow you to reflect.
The New Moon on the 5th creates tension on the home front. Everyone is resisting your authority. You won't be able to rein in someone who is intent on going their own way. Instead of trying to shield this relative from trouble, let them go. On the 19th, the Full Moon marks an important career milestone. You could be given a rise, promotion or both.
AQUARIUS January 21st - Feb 19th On the 5th, the New Moon will create some tension in your personal life. Angry words will be exchanged on social media, making you defensive and angry. Don't let feelings of bitterness and betrayal consume you. The Full Moon on the 19th might find you returning from a trip, collecting a diploma or publishing some written work.
PISCES Feb 20th - March 20th A moneymaking opportunity on the 5th has strings attached, due to the challenged New Moon. You might have to prove yourself to an unfriendly group that doesn't want you to succeed. Instead of trying to live up to their expectations, it may be better to look for another job. Money from an investment, insurance refund or legal settlement will arrive on or around the 19th. That's when the Full Moon strengthens your financial situation. Use this windfall to advance your career.

Heavenly Herbs Plants in pots have become trendier in recent years; indeed put just about anything in a container and someone will want it in their garden. But life in a pot or other container suits some plants better than others, to say the least.

Good drainage is essential for a herb pot or else the plants won’t last long at all. Use broken crocks (such D VPDVKHG ¿RZHU SRWV or kitchen crockery) laid loosely over the drainage hole(s) before you add the compost and gravel. Make sure you buy proper horticultural grit and mix about one-part grit in with three parts compost. I’m not exactly a dedicated follower of horticultural fashion, but I have to say that I’ve always liked to grow herbs in pots. For starters they look pretty, and there are lots of ornamental variegated forms that are readily available too. But perhaps more importantly, herbs in pots can be kept in any well-lit spot close to the house. There’s no need to worry if your garden soil is too wet and soggy for them and, best of all, no need to go traipsing to the far end of your garden on wet, windy evenings just because you
fancy perking up the supper with some fresh, zingy herbs. In a planter they can be within stretching distance and you won’t even have to put your ZHOOLHV RQ ,I \RXU OLIH ODFNV D garden, then herbs in window boxes are perfect.
You need a good-sized container – I love to use terracotta as these plants, many of which have Mediterranean origins, suit this material down to the ground. You will also need some good-quality compost, some horticultural grit and (of course) your favourite herbs. A local nursery or garden centre should provide you with a fantastic array of herbs perfect for your planter at this time of year. Some of my favourites include: variegated cream and green sage (why have just plain green?); ‘Tricolor’ sage, which also has splashes of purple on its leaves; golden lemon thyme (with a great lemony ¿DYRXU SURVWUDWH URVHPDU\ chives; and golden oregano. But more important than taking note of my favourites, choose herbs you know you will actually enjoy eating, but opt for pretty varieties of these where available.

A pint, a pie and a piece of local history As you stand at the bar, ordering a pint of Old Peculier and a steak pie, it’s unlikely you will be thinking about the name of your local pub. The history trail begins in ancient Rome. A taberna (a name which gave us the word ‘tavern’) was a small shop that sold wine, and owners traditionally used vine leaves as a trading sign. From 43 AD onwards, when the Roman culture spread to Britain, landlords who couldn’t lay their hands on vine leaves, 30

There are so many more naming traditions to explore, including sporting names, hunting names, literary names and traderelated names: each one providing a fascinating insight into the way we used to live. So next time you pass a pub sign swinging gently in the breeze, think of it less as a painted board and more as an intriguing window into history. By Kate McClelland

Experience a great traditional family day out this Spring at Nottinghamshire County Show New for this year are three HOYS Qualifiers, including British Ridden Heavy Horse of the Year and, following on from the success of the dedicated ‘Heavies Ring’ in 2018, our Heavy Horse ‘Village’ will have even more to entertain, including ‘working horse’ demonstrations on both days. These working horses will also be taking part in the Heritage Harvesting parade in the Main Ring on both days. This first show of the season showcases the best cattle, sheep, goats and pigs alongside superb equine events, including majestic ‘heavies’ and first-class showjumping. Classes and competitions run all day both days. There are still sponsorship opportunities for companies and organisations wishing to promote themselves whilst supporting their local agricultural show, In addition to the usual farmyard favourites, will be gun dogs, hunting hounds, giant tortoises, and birds of prey. Children will particularly enjoy the antics of the animals in the
Countryside Area and alongside old favourites like the Sheep Show will be fascinating demonstrations of heritage crafts such as coracle making and fashioning traditional hats from straw. A welcome sight will be the return of last year’s very popular 8ft stilted animatronic character, Froojamaflip, and his hilarious sidekick, Fred the Gardener. Featuring as the main attraction is Dzhigitovka, an exciting Cossack trick-riding spectacular, straight from Russia, with fabulously costumed riders and dare-devil horses, performing to crowd-pleasing music and bringing a flavour of the legendary warriors on horseback, masters of sword, archery and outstanding gymnastic skills. Back by popular demand will be the music marquee which was well supported last year with a full programme on both days. Visitors can look forward to the Farriery Competition where they can watch experienced and apprentice-level farriers getting very hot under the collar as they
demonstrate their horse-shoe making skills to compete for prizes. The marquee will be located near the Heavy Horse Village. Visit the recently rejuvenated Food Experience area to sample and buy tasty locally-made produce and the NFU Play Barn which always has great activities for little hands to try. Then step next door to admire the gorgeous floral art displays in the Lady Eastwood Centre. With ample opportunity to shop for crafts, gifts and clothing, many items on sale will not be available in the high street stores. The Show benefits from plenty of food outlets where tasty snacks, two-courses lunches, hot and cold drinks, including beers and wine, can be bought. Offering a funpacked weekend of family entertainment, the Show successfully combines tradition with modern-day life – from discovery and adventure to hands-on experiences and learning while you watch – there really is something for everyone.

National Stop Snoring Week 22nd-28th April Even if you don’t snore (or think you don’t), you probably know a snorer. Although it’s a common problem, particularly as we age, it shouldn’t be ignored. Snoring can affect your sleep (and your partner’s), affecting your mental and physical health and damaging your relationships. It may also be a sign of sleep apnoea. Every year, National Stop Snoring Week aims to remind us that snoring is treatable.

Surgery is not widely available on the NHS and isn’t always successful Tackling snoring Try lifestyle changes to eliminate as many risk factors as you can. Use a tennis ball taped to the back of your nightwear to prevent you lying on your back, or a pillow or bed wedge to keep you on your side. If you struggle to sleep on your side, try elevating the upper half of your body with a bed wedge instead. You could also buy some ear plugs for your partner… If these tips don’t work, don’t rush to buy snoring solutions XQWLO \RXµYH LGHQWL¾HG WKH root cause of your snoring. The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association have questionnaires designed to do just this at britishsnoring.
Could you have sleep apnoea? You may have sleep apnoea if you suffer from: • loud snoring, especially when lying on your back with your mouth open • noisy and laboured breathing • short periods where your breathing stops or you gasp, snort or choke • night sweats • frequent urination at night Sufferers also often suffer headaches, irritability, daytime tiredness, forgetfulness, anxiety or depression and reduced libido. The risk factors for sleep apnoea include all those for snoring, but you’re also more at risk if you have:

What makes you snore? Snoring is caused by your tongue, mouth, throat or nasal airways vibrating as you breathe. But what causes that? It’s the result of a restriction, which may be there constantly or only occur when your airway muscles relax during sleep. You’re more likely to snore (or to make your snoring worse) if you: • are overweight • smoke • drink too much alcohol • sleep on your back • take sedatives or muscle relaxants • are middle-aged or older, as you begin to lose muscle tone
Both alcohol and smoking can cause you to wake and the overnight withdrawal from nicotine causes symptoms (such as restlessness and anxiety) that can disturb you.
co.uk/itests. Problem: Your tongue partially blocks the back of your throat. Solution: A mandibular advancement device, which helps to bring your tongue forward. Problem: Your mouth falls open when you’re asleep. Solutions: A chin strap to hold your mouth closed, or a vestibular shield (a device worn in your mouth to make you breathe through your nose). Problem: Blocked or narrow airways in your nose. Solutions: Nasal dilators or strips that hold your nose open while you sleep, or sprays to reduce nasal swelling. If these solutions don’t work for you, don’t just ignore the problem – see your GP. They may refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist. Surgery is sometimes suggested if other treatments don’t help, but it’s not widely available on the NHS and isn’t always successful, particularly long-term.

• a large neck (17+ inches for men, 15+ inches for women) • a narrowed or obstructed airway (e.g. enlarged tonsils or tongue, or adenoids) • nasal congestion • a family history of OSA (see below) Types of sleep apnoea OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea), the most common type, is divided into two subtypes. Apnoea: the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax and collapse, causing total blockage of the airway. An ‘apnoea’ refers WR D EORFNDJH RI WKH DLU¿RZ IRU 10 seconds or more. Hypopnoea: a partial blockage of the airway, resulting in an DLU¿RZ UHGXFWLRQ RI JUHDWHU WKDQ 50% for 10 seconds or more. People with OSA may have repeated episodes of apnoea and hypopnoea throughout the night and many experience
episodes of both. This condition is often referred to as obstructive sleep apnoea-hypopnoea syndrome, or OSAHS. The lack of oxygen triggers your brain to rouse you from deep sleep so that you move and/or wake up, and usually begin to breathe more normally. CSA (central sleep apnoea) is much rarer. The brain temporarily ‘forgets’ to tell your body to breathe. This occurs more in older people, opioid users and people with heart failure or who have had a stroke. Don’t ignore sleep apnoea symptoms. Sleep apnoea puts you at risk of: • high blood pressure (hypertension) • stroke, heart attack and heart disease • an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) such as atrial ¾EULOODWLRQ • type 2 diabetes (although this
may be linked to obesity as an underlying cause) • gradual loss of brain function (research shows that uncontrolled OSA may make you 12 times more likely to be involved in a road accident) Treatment options for OSA include: • lifestyle changes • using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device, which prevents your airway closing by delivering compressed air through a mask • a mandibular advancement device • surgery, if your OSA is the result of a physical problem that can be surgically corrected For more advice, visit: The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association: britishsnoring.co.uk By Alison Runham

accelerate quickly from standing, and if driven gently most will remain a full EV at city-centre speeds. On faster roads, however, the CVT gearbox used in most mainstream hybrid cars doesn’t respond well.
Is a hybrid car right for me? There are good reasons to switch from a petrol or diesel car, such as concerns over environmental impact, tax EHQH¾WV IRU ORZ HPLVVLRQV vehicles or simply to save money at the pumps. As full-electric cars aren’t suitable for every driver, a hybrid car that merges combustion WHFKQRORJ\ ZLWK HOHFWUL¾FDWLRQ may be the answer. Types of hybrid Mild hybrids use small electric motors and battery packs exclusively to aid the engine, and never drive the wheels directly. Traditional or parallel hybrids, popularised by the Toyota Prius in the late 90s, use a larger battery pack and electric motor and are capable of a few miles on electric power alone, with the engine cutting in over a certain speed or throttle load. All electric power is gained from brake regeneration and engine power. Plug-in hybrids can be plugged in to a socket, have bigger battery packs and electric 44

Increasingly rare are rangeextending electric vehicles – essentially electric cars with a combustion engine that acts as a generator. What’s your mileage? +LJK PLOHDJH XVHUV VWLOO EHQH¾W from a diesel over a hybrid in most situations. Where do you live? Being able to charge a plug-in hybrid or range-extending electric car at home is critical, DV WKH\ EHQH¾W PRVW IURP regular charging. There are a few environmental concerns surrounding hybrid vehicles – for example, battery manufacture contributes VLJQL¾FDQWO\ WR WKH K\EULGµV environmental footprint. The hybrid wins, however, when it comes to local emissions and air pollution. The ability to run on electricity alone at low speeds helps with particulate emissions. Are hybrid cars reliable? Hybrids have proven longevity and if looked after, a hybrid’s battery pack will last the vehicle’s lifetime. Regenerative braking reduces brake and tyre wear, aiding maintenance costs. WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century. Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20]. Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15]. There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. In addition you may wish to log on to our international website: www.thisisyourbible.com.
