Testimonial The contract manager called me five minutes after I called their office and a representative was with me within the hour and left me with a quote for full removal. This was carried out one week later. Two operatives arrived on time, dismantled and removed my garage and they left with no mess and cleaned up really well. The two operatives were very professional and polite and were a credit to the company

How to manage the cost of entertaining the kids this summer (not to mention back-to-school expenditure) money to spend on taking the kids for a day out.

If you’re worried about the cost of entertaining your children this summer, you’re not alone. It’s been estimated the average family spends ÂŁ389 on entertaining the kids during the summer holidays.š So in the light of this, what can \RX GR WR HDVH \RXU Ă€QDQFLDO situation at this time of year? Here are just a few ideas to help you manage the cost of entertaining the children and deal with the inevitable backto-school expenditure. Prioritise your spending Prioritising essential outgoings, such as rent, mortgage payments or council tax, allows you to steer clear of serious Ă€QDQFLDO WURXEOH <RX¡UH QRW risking the roof over your head and will still be able to buy the groceries to feed your family. Make a budget By carefully budgeting before the summer begins, you may Ă€QG DUHDV ZKHUH \RX FDQ FXW back. Knowing exactly where your money goes means you can consciously reduce your outgoings wherever possible, DQG SRWHQWLDOO\ Ă€QG VRPH H[WUD 10

Find free or low-cost activities in your area Make full use of the internet by searching for free activities LQ \RXU DUHD <RX should be able to Ă€QG D IHZ GHDOV RQ GD\V RXW or coupons and vouchers for money off entry to kids’ attractions. Theme parks can be particularly expensive for families, but with a ‘2 for 1’ offer on admissions, or a meal deal when you’re there, you’ll all enjoy a great day out without it breaking the bank. Get the children involved with money If your children are old enough you can introduce them to the realities of managing money, albeit with small amounts DW Ă€UVW 7KH\¡OO EHJLQ WR XQGHUVWDQG WKDW PRQH\ LV Ă€QLWH and they can’t have everything they want. What about back-to-school costs? The cost of school uniforms and all the other ancillary bits and pieces the children need for the new term can be the Ă€QDO VWUDZ IRU \RXU Ă€QDQFHV at the end of the summer holidays, so what can you do WR KHOS \RXUVHOI Ă€QDQFLDOO\ LQ this respect? • Buying school uniform towards the end of the

summer holidays is a good idea. Children grow so quickly and this way you can also make sure they get the most wear out of their uniform. • Some schools operate second-hand uniform sales when the end of the holidays is approaching – this can offer huge savings as you don’t have to buy new items. • Giving a slightly older child some money to buy their own stationery or other school items can teach them about money management, particularly if you let them keep the change. For families on low incomes, dealing with school summer holiday costs adds stress to an DOUHDG\ FKDOOHQJLQJ Ă€QDQFLDO situation. Keeping the children entertained can be expensive, but with a little planning and budgeting, hopefully it won’t impact too heavily on family Ă€QDQFHV DW WKLV WLPH RU GXULQJ the rest of the year. š www.business-reporter. co.uk/2017/06/19/cost-ofentertaining-children-duringsummer-holidays-estimatedat-389/ www.moneyadviceservice.org. uk/blog/how-to-handle-back-toschool-costs www.moneyadviceservice.org. uk/blog/can-you-cope-with-thecost-of-kids-this-summer

Bringing A Pet Into Your Family by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk

Pets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins. All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time. The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for young children to handle. 12

You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs. Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll QHHG WR Ă€QG WKH SHW WKDW¡V ULJKW for you. Rescue centres are a JRRG Ă€UVW SRUW RI FDOO DV WKH\ should be able to tell you what age group a pet can live with, whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, it’s sensible to choose a breeder that’s registered with the Kennel Club, as they have to adhere to strict ethical and health criteria. Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future. If you’re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at ‘borrowing’ one for walks and play. It’s worth asking around to see if any of

your neighbours need some extra help. Or check out The Cinnamon Trust (www. cinnamon.org.uk), which puts volunteer dog walkers in touch with pet owners who need support. There’s also Borrow My Doggy (www. borrowmydoggy.com), which connects dog walkers and pet sitters with pet owners. Lots of animal rescues also need people to foster pets long or short term. Find out more www.pdsa.org.uk has an easy guide to choosing the right animal for your circumstances, and advice on a range of pets, from chickens to horses. www.rspca.org.uk has advice on everything from settling a new pet into a home to coping with any behaviour issues. www.dogstrust.org.uk has lots of downloadable IDFWVKHHWV LQFOXGLQJ D OHDà HW that helps parents to keep their children safe around dogs. www.thekennelclub.org.uk has advice about choosing a puppy and a list of all registered breeders.

SCULPTURE AT DODDINGTON

L

Daily, 28 july – 9 sept, 11am – 4.30pm

incolnshire’s Doddington Hall is to host its fourth Sculpture at Doddington event from the end of July; its largest yet thanks to the addition of an extended indoor exhibition. The impressive Elizabethan hall and grounds will provide the perfect backdrop for more than 300 sculptures which are being transported from all corners of the UK as well as overseas. The carefully curated exhibition, which takes place between Saturday 28 July and Sunday 9 September, will showcase 80 of the world’s bestknown sculptors. Collectors, art lovers and garden enthusiasts alike will be able to view the inspiring works of art as they stroll through the historic walled gardens and parkland. Once they reach the Stable Yard area, they will find indoor gallery spaces displaying up to 120 sculptures alongside a new ceramics exhibition. It will be the first time Doddington has hosted a ceramics’ show.

“Our previous Sculpture at Doddington exhibitions have proved popular but we are particularly excited about this year’s offer as there will be even more to view,” said Claire Birch, who with her husband James, live in the hall. “We will be bringing pieces created by national and international sculptors right here to Lincolnshire for this limited period.”

Sculpture at Doddington 2018 Saturday 28 July - Sunday 9 September, open daily 11am- 4.30pm. All pieces will be available for sale. Exhibition entry is included in garden admission (£7 adults, £3.50 children, £18 family ticket). The house is also open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays with an additional entry fee.

Beauty Staying Safe In The Sun by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you‌ First up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours. Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skinfriendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at ÂŁ13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. 20

Use Locally - Issue 64 August 2018 Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs ÂŁ5.59 from Holland & Barrett.

'R \RX VXIIHU IURP SULFNO\ KHDW RU ÀQG you only have to look at the sun to go red? Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially IRUPXODWHG WR UHGXFH LQà DPPDWLRQ DQG irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter: most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert: if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

By Katherine Sorrell Tiles come in a great variety of colours and patterns, and can be sleek and machine-made or rustic and hand-made, shiny and glazed or matt and unglazed, smooth or textured, or digitally printed with your own designs. They are ideal for bathrooms, showers and behind kitchen worktops, but are also great for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms, utility rooms and possibly even as part of a living area, too.

IDEAS FOR FEATURE WALLS • Transform your wall with peel-off stickers, with designs from simple shapes to complex illustrations. • Wallpaper with an oversized pattern and vivid colours makes a great focal point on just one wall. • Consider modern, graphic paint effects such as bold horizontal stripes or an ombrÊ/dip dye look. • Large maps (old or new) are attractive and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music and wrapping paper, too. • Take any digital image and have it enlarged to cover an entire wall. Eye-poppingly gorgeous. • Use a variety of vintage wallpaper samples as a colourful collage. Combine with paint, too, if you wish.

History

By Catherine Rose

What on Earth? The History of Surrealism (1896-1966). Breton developed a method of artistic expression called ‘automatism’, which involved writing automatically from the subconscious, enabling the artist to tap into the furthest reaches of the imagination. Surrealism was a radical philosophical movement that was born, seemingly out of nowhere, around a century ago. It had an enormous impact on our modern culture, encompassing not only art and OLWHUDWXUH EXW Ă€OP SKRWRJUDSK\ music, political thought and even everyday objects. Surrealism evolved in the 1920s from Dadaism – a politically-based art movement that was a reaction to the First :RUOG :DU ,W DOVR UHĂ HFWHG WKH development during this time of psychology with its concepts of psychoanalysis and the subconscious. Surrealist art and literature consequently used dream-like states and seemingly out-of-place but symbolic images to give new interpretation to the world. The word ‘surrealism’ was invented by the writer Guillaume Apollinaire in 1917. The term was subsequently taken up by the founder of the Surrealist movement, the French poet AndrĂŠ Breton 32

,Q KLV Ă€UVW 0DQLIHVWR RI Surrealism, published in 1924, Breton outlined the idea that Surrealism was a way for the arts to encourage political change as it forced people to ‘think outside the box’. His theories subsequently attracted many followers including Dali (1904-1989), the Spanish SDLQWHU -RDQ 0LUR *HUPDQ DUWLVW 0D[ (UQVW Ă€OPPDNHU /XLV %XQXHO $PHULFDQ SKRWRJUDSKHU 0DQ 5D\ 1976) and the Belgian artist 5HQH 0DJULWWH Surrealist artworks are often GLVWXUELQJ DQG Ă€OOHG ZLWK strange and symbolic images, juxtaposing objects which would not be found together in real life – for example, Dali’s well-known painting The Persistence of Time, with its giant clocks melting in an LPDJLQDU\ ODQGVFDSH RU 0HUHW Oppenheim’s Object painted LQ ZKLFK GHSLFWV D FXS saucer and spoon made of fur. Bring the seaside vibe to your home with a look that is light and bright, fresh and relaxed. 8SVLGH GRZQ coastal house interior, designed E\ 6WHSKDQLH Dunning of Dunning & Everard: 01722 710 608; dunningandeverard. com, photographed by David Parmiter.

GET THE LOOK: SUNSHINE STYLE • A calm and relaxed vibe is the essence of coastal chic, and colour and texture go a long way towards achieving this. Go all white everywhere, or else think pale paintwork with accents of grey, beige and – of course – blue. Add some touches of natural wood for a lovely contrast. • Bring the outside in by including gorgeous natural elements. Driftwood is perfect, as are shells and coral (ethical, of course). Add some rope, wicker and maybe seagrass, coir or jute for a lovely contrast of textures. • It’s all about the light. Coastal homes are airy and breezy, so maximise light at the windows E\ KDQJLQJ ÀOP\ FXUWDLQV RU ZKLWH SDLQWHG ZRRGHQ EOLQGV DQG DUUDQJH DUWLÀFLDO OLJKWLQJ VR WKDW D FHQWUDO SHQGDQW LV VXSSOHPHQWHG E\ D YHUVDWLOH VHOHFWLRQ RI ZDOO WDEOH DQG à RRU ODPSV ‡ &KRRVH IDEULFV IRU WKHLU FULVS RU à RDW\ IHHO 6LPSOLFLW\ LV NH\ VR RSW IRU OLQHQ PXVOLQ DQG WLFNLQJ HLWKHU SODLQ RU ZLWK D VWULSH %ROG VWULSHV DUH PRUH QDXWLFDO ZKLOH EDUHO\ WKHUH VWULSHV are more utilitarian – either way, the look is completely charming.

Motoring

By James Baggott

The Best Convertibles For Under £2,000 With summer in full swing, now might just be the time to nab yourself a drop-top car. Thankfully, you don’t need to spend a packet in order to get that wind-in-yourhair experience, so we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000.

by a 1.8-litre engine it has enough performance to excite, and its compact size makes it feel perfectly nimble out on the road.

MG TF This end of the market is rife with well-priced MG TF’s. Most come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine under the bonnet, and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car even now and seems to have aged well. We’ve found a number for well under our £2,000 budget with one (albeit tired looking) example coming in at under £500. We wouldn’t advise going for something this low priced, though if its history checks out and the car looks straight enough, then there’s no reason why it couldn’t be a decent low-cost runner.

Citroen C3 Pluriel The C3 Pluriel was somewhat of an oddball: designed to EH Ă€YH FDUV LQ RQH LW ZDVQ¡W hugely successful. However, this does mean that you can pick up some pretty tidy examples on the used market and, though they may not have a sports car design, you still get that drop-top experience at a very low price. 44

Most cars get alloy wheels and air conditioning, but make sure that the folding roof is functioning correctly – this is a crucial area to check.

Mercedes SLK We’ll admit that buying a used Mercedes (particularly in this price bracket) can be a little bit RI D PLQHÀHOG WKDQNV WR KLJKHU repair costs and pricier parts, but choose carefully and you FDQ ÀQG \RXUVHOI D VWHDO The SLK is a case in point. You’ll likely be looking at an early 2000s model, but expect to get boat loads of equipment for the money, including electronically-adjustable seats and cruise control. However, decent servicing history is essential here – a poor maintenance record could prove costly in the future.

Toyota MR2 The little MR2 isn’t a bad idea at all if you’re after no-frills but involving motoring. Powered

There is a drawback, however. The MR2 lacks any real boot, so it’s not exactly the last word in practicality. That said, there are a variety of different examples available within this budget, and most are in reasonably good nick.

Mazda MX-5 It’s a bit of a no-brainer, this one. The MX-5, throughout its various incarnations, has proved to be a reliable, cheap-to-repair convertible. With fans all over the world, it’s a go-to choice for those who want a relatively involving drive coupled with compact dimensions. Rust is an issue, particularly RQ HDUO\ PRGHOV ² EXW Ă€QG D clean example, and it’ll provide many miles of trouble-free motoring.

Mini Convertible :KHQ WKH ÂśQHZ¡ 0LQL Ă€UVW FDPH out, it proved to be immensely popular – and things haven’t changed much since. When a convertible version was launched, it was snapped up by consumers as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines. These can now be picked

up for well within our £2,000 budget. Make sure that the interior is straight, and listen out for strange noises from the power steering pump – these can often fail on older cars, and are costly to replace.

the retro-styling department is this – the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet. Most cars come comprehensively equipped, with air conditioning and alloy wheels just some of the extras \RX·OO ÀQG ÀWWHG WR WKH %XJ

Saab 9-3

The arrangement of the folding cloth hood drew some criticism – mainly for the way the fabric lies strangely at the rear of the car when collapsed – but this shouldn’t put you off, as the Beetle is a decent and reliable soft-top.

With Saab now a carmaker of the past, few consider its cars when looking at the used market. However, the 9-3 convertible is a great option for those wanting to go for a comfortable and spacious drop-top. In addition, there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status.

Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet Almost matching the Mini in

BMW 3 Series Convertible (E46) There are a lot of examples of 3 Series convertibles to be found at this budget. The most common are E46 models, which are sturdy and excellent to drive. A variety of engines are available too, with even

the top end straight-six models well in this price bracket. If you’re planning on purchasing one, double check the arches as these are prone to rust. In addition, turn the steering lock to lock while travelling at low speed and listen out for any troubling knocking noises.

Audi TT Roadster There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi 77 5RDGVWHU LV D ÀQH RSWLRQ Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this soft-top still looks and feels fresh today. At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles.

Does your child need extra support to achieve their full potential? “I wish I’d done more, sooner”. A frustrated comment from Helen, one of our current Year 11 students as she balances classroom learning, revision at home and intervention sessions with Spotlight and at school. 4 At Spotlight on learning we specialise in Maths and English (both Language and Literature). We support all levels of ability, from Year 7 to year 11 (and A level) helping them to feel better about the pressure of ‘getting the grades’. 4 We work hard to build students’ self-belief; finding the gaps in their learning and working on those specific areas. After taking (very) early retirement last summer from secondary school leadership, Suzanne Wells knew she wanted to create a local after-school support Centre: “We’ve been so busy since we opened in February, and every student who has attended has made significant progress. We combine a relaxed, happy atmosphere with targeted hard work. We are also exam markers, so we know how to make the difference.” “It became obvious to me as a school leader that students benefited from extra personalised support; in small groups after school, to build confidence and significantly improve progress. This then became the stimulus for our Spotlight on learning Centre. ‘Spotlight’ has students from local schools, others travel from further afield. “I enjoy talking with parents, hearing their concerns. We quickly pinpoint students’ needs, using initial assessments to identify where to start - the positive change quickly starts to happen, for parents as well. It’s incredibly rewarding!” Facebook 5 star rating: “Excellent place with excellent teachers. My daughter is having both Maths and English lessons here on a Monday and Thursday. After only a few lessons I can already see an improvement in her work and in her confidence. Would highly recommend.” Monika (Year 11) wrote: Thank you for everything. You have made me laugh when I was down. You have helped me with my confidence and supported me with my exam prep. I got my target level 9 results! Suzanne Wells, (BA (Hons) English, PGCE) is Founder and Lead Teacher of Spotlight on learning; offering English Language and Literature after school support for students aged

11 to 18, with Maths tuition starting next month. 4 So don’t wait, the sooner we meet your child, the sooner we can get started. 4 Ring Suzanne on 07855 392166 for 25% off first 4 sessions with a free initial assessment – just mention you’ve read Use Locally! *Coddington is conveniently located 2 minutes off the A1 near Newark and 5 minutes from junctions for A17/A616/A617/A46.
