Karols Korner As we approach 2018, making New Years Resolutions and plans for holidays amongst other things, get fit, stop smoking, etc.. I wonder if the holiday season is really about family and not about the best present list. Health and fitness are important but so are family and loving those around us. What about a New Years Resolution to spend an extra hour a week with a relative or donate an hour a week to a local charity as a volunteer? These gifts are priceless, and mean so much to the recipient, far more than some smellies, or a box of chocolates. We finish the showing year with a fantastic win at LKA (at the NEC) for Wally, with a Best Dog Puppy, his last puppy class as he was 1 year old a few days later. So very pleased with my young man!! Happy New Year!

Choosing the Best Mobile Phone Plans in 2018
Choosing the right mobile phone plan can be quite daunting, especially if you don’t understand how they work. Perhaps you’ve always bought a contract with a phone included, but you might find that choosing a SIM-only contract is better thanks to its IOH[LELOLW\ With so many different plans available these days, here’s an idea of what to look out for. MOBILE PHONE PLANS EXPLAINED There are essentially three types of mobile phone deal:

Chestnut Financial Services Ian Francis Your local financial adviser
GET IN TOUCH!
I am often asked what the benefit of a financial adviser is. I often explain that financial advisers try to help their clients achieve their dreams – so we try to deal in good news, not manage bad news. A great many clients come to us very worried, sometimes with good reason, but our aim is to give them peace of mind and help achieve their realistic hopes and desires wherever possible. Many clients have a box of financial papers and can’t bring themselves to read them, manage their pensions, sort out insurances or look out for great mortgage deals. But they are missing out – probably spending more than they need to. Most advisers will settle for a cup of tea, and maybe a slice of cake, to look through that box for a few minutes!
M
any advisers are very well qualified in a wide range of areas; I cover mortgages, equity release, long term care, and pensions advice, as well as investments, insurance and retirement planning generally to individuals, and a wide range of services to businesses – lots of businesses need affordable advice to cover insurances and auto-enrolment, and that’s what we aim to give. Many areas of advice require specialist qualifications. I would always recommend checking that the firm of financial advisers and the advisor themselves are listed on the Financial Conduct Authority’s
register of approved persons – that way you know you are dealing with a reputable person, subject to a high standard of regulation and that you will receive protection if you need it. If you want equity release or long term care advice for example expect the adviser you are dealing with to hold the right qualifications if they are advising you. Respectable advisers are always able to prove their qualifications – ask
them to do it! We have a wealth of resources available to try to secure the right deal for clients, sourcing systems are available that cover the whole market, or if the adviser is restricted in some way they will explain the limits of their searches and recommendations. All clients have a unique story to tell. We help clients with our friendly, informative approach; our initial meetings are all complimentary and mainly carried out at the client’s convenience in their own home. So, if a reader has been told their mortgage is rising, or coming to the end of a deal in the next couple of months, then get in touch. We also help first time buyers and right to buy clients. If a reader needs to think about their pensions or income needs, or wants to talk about equity release or long terms care planning, then get in touch. Where business owners need insurance advice or advice on auto enrolment, then get in touch. For just about everything else that falls inbetween those key areas, get in touch!

MOUSSAKA RECIPE
Use Locally - Issue 57 January 2018
Moussaka is possibly one of the best known Greek dishes, and for good cause – it is delicious! It involves a lot of work, but the end result is worth it. You’ll feel proud of your work and rewarded once your family and friends enjoy your moussaka with a fresh salad and a glass of dry red wine. Serves 8 INGREDIENTS Mince meat sauce: • 1 big onion finely chopped • 2 tbsps olive oil • 1 kg minced meat (pork or pork/beef or lamb) • 1 tin chopped tomatoes or 1 glass grated tomatoes • 1 glass red or white dry wine (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste • 1 tsp oregano • Half bunch finely chopped parsley (one cupful) Bechamel sauce: • 175g butter • A few tbsps flour (just enough to absorb all the butter) • Milk as needed • 1 cup of Halloumi cheese grated or a mixture of other cheeses • ½ tsp grated nutmeg Vegetables: • 4 large aubergines • 4 courgettes • 4 potatoes • 1 ½ – 2 cups corn or sunflower oil METHOD: For the meat sauce: • Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a frying pan and sauté onions. • Add the minced meat until brown, for around 10 to 15 minutes. • If you want to add wine now is the time to pour it in. • Add the tomatoes, salt, pepper and oregano and stir well. • Add the garlic, cinnamon, bay leaves if using. • Cover and cook for 20 minutes to make a moist sauce, then remove lid and cook for a further 10 minutes (don’t let the sauce get too dry) • Take off the heat and add the parsley, mix well and put aside
16
until required. • Remember! Parsley in Greek dishes with such sauces is always added last and after the heat is turned off. For the Béchamel sauce: • Melt butter in a saucepan. • Add flour, stirring with a wooden spoon so it absorbs all butter. • Take off heat. • Slowly add the milk, stirring constantly and quickly. • When a smooth custard-like sauce is achieved, put on heat again • Carry on stirring/whisking, adding more milk as needed • Your béchamel should be smooth and thick but not stiff • When the sauce is ready, add 3-4 tbsps of grated cheese and grated nutmeg and mix well. For the vegetables: • Peel and wash potatoes. • Wash aubergines and courgettes and cut off stems and tips. • You can peel your aubergines a bit but not completely. • Cut aubergines, courgettes and potatoes lengthwise into large 5mm slices • Place aubergine slices in salty
water for an hour. • Rinse well under cold water in a colander. • Dry each slice very well with kitchen paper. (If one drop of water escapes from the aubergine when frying a splash can burn you!) • Heat up oil in a wide frying pan. You should have enough oil to cover vegetables when frying them. • Fry in batches in hot oil until lightly brown. • Drain from excess oil by placing all fried vegetables on a tray lined with a double layer of kitchen paper Finally: • Place a layer of vegetables on a lightly oiled baking dish or pyrex dish – first the aubergines, then courgettes, lastly potatoes. • Spread meat sauce over your vegetables evenly. • Cover with another layer of vegetables or whatever vegetables you are left with. • Pour béchamel sauce over the top. • Prick your moussaka with a fork all over to allow the béchamel to run a bit inside the vegetables and the meat sauce. • Sprinkle grated cheese on top. • Sprinkle ground nutmeg on top (or ground cloves or ground cinnamon). • Bake in a pre-heated oven (180 to 200) until golden brown (45 mins – 1 hour) • If your dish is full to the rim then place a baking sheet underneath to prevent spills in the oven.
Take the hassle out of cooking and give GSH a call on 01636 704500 and let them do it for you!

New Technologies To Help You Make A ‘Green’ Exit by Kate McLelland
Even with the best of intentions, it’s almost impossible to avoid leaving a carbon footprint during your lifetime. Use any form of motor transport, throw away an item GHVWLQHG IRU ODQGĂ€OO RU VZLWFK on your heating on a cold day and by these simple actions you will be contributing to environmental pollution and - it is widely believed - climate change. “But it’ll all stop when I’m dead!â€? I hear you say. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work OLNH WKDW 7KHUH LV RQH Ă€QDO KXUGOH WR MXPS EHIRUH \RX FDQ truly claim to have passed beyond the point of affecting the environment, and that’s the way you choose to dispose of your earthly remains. In the UK today, cremation is probably the most common form of disposal. It began to win favour in the crowded towns and cities of the Victorian era when one of the queen’s physicians, Sir Henry Thompson, stated that it was “becoming a necessary sanitary precaution against the propagation of disease among a population daily growing larger in relation to the area it 18
occupiedâ€?. He also believed that cremation would prevent the risk of premature burial, make funerals less costly and protect mourners from having to stand by the graveside in bad weather! Last year a survey carried out by the government website YouGov discovered that while 17% of people in the UK want to be buried when they die, almost six out of ten would prefer to be cremated. It takes a huge amount of energy to reduce a human body to ashes, and crematoria use industrial furnaces capable of generating temperatures of 870-980 °C (1,600-1,800 °F). Despite the generation of so much heat, it can take between one and three hours to complete a cremation. As well as using energy, the process also releases toxins in the form of gases, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen chloride, dioxins, furans and formaldehyde. Despite strict Ă€OWUDWLRQ UXOHV D VPDOO DPRXQW of mercury also manages to escape into the earth’s atmosphere. In the UK, 16% of all mercury pollution results
from the cremation process. Most people assume that burials are less likely to damage the environment and it’s true that they can be more eco-friendly, provided WKH FRIÀQ DQG HYHU\WKLQJ inside is made of natural materials. However, some of the processes involved in burial can release damaging chemicals; for example, HPEDOPLQJ à XLG D UHFRJQLVHG carcinogen - will eventually OHDFK LQWR WKH VRLO ZKLOH FRIÀQV made of hardwood take a long time to break down and DQ\ SODVWLF ÀWWLQJV DWWDFKHG will probably release toxins as they degrade. Despite the potential of burial

Use Locally - Issue 57 January 2018 to create fewer environmental hazards, it is not for everyone: once the body is interred, natural processes get to work, gradually breaking it down until only the bones remain. Not all of us like the thought of allowing our bodies to degrade in this way, but recently families in the USA and Canada have been able to sign up to methods of disposal that offer an alternative to conventional burial or cremation. Alkaline hydrolysis - known as Resomation and often dubbed “green cremation - is a chemical process similar to natural anaerobic digestion (a process already used in medical clinics). The body is placed in water inside an aluminium container and the soft tissue is then broken down
into a non-toxic liquid, using a combination of potassium hydroxide, heat and pressure. :KLOH Ă DPH EDVHG FUHPDWLRQ reduces the body to a relatively small amount of ashes, this method leaves the skeleton, as well as any medical implants, completely intact. The bones can subsequently be buried, or ground to a powder similar to cremated ashes. For many the idea of being immersed in a water-based solution is preferable to conventional cremation and there are indications that the technique may soon become available in the UK, although currently there are only around 14 funeral directors in the world offering this ‘green’ option. Further ‘green’ methods in the pipeline are Cryomation
- where a body is freeze-dried in liquid nitrogen then broken up into granules for burial - and ecoLegacy, where the body is cooled, then reduced to powder using pressure waves. Just 5% of the respondents in YouGov’s survey said they were looking for “something elseâ€? when it came to the disposal of their mortal UHPDLQV VR LW¡V GLIĂ€FXOW WR predict what the level of takeup will be when all these new options become available in the UK. Although the British public may initially be slow to break with established tradition, the introduction of ‘greener’ forms of burial and cremation will at least provide a wider choice for those of us seeking to leave the lightest possible carbon footprint on our planet.

Sleep: Vital for Good Mental and Physical Health problems if you’re overweight.
We’ve known, vaguely, for a long time that losing sleep can make us struggle to concentrate and keep smiling. Even Shakespeare knew the value of sleep, describing it as the ‘balm of hurt minds’ and the ‘chief nourisher in life’s feast’. But research is increasingly proving that a lack of good quality sleep can seriously damage our physical and mental health. More than 20 large-scale studies have proved conclusively that the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life - and it’s not hard to see why‌ HOW A LACK OF SLEEP AFFECTS PHYSICAL HEALTH
22
Increased cancer risk Professor Matthew Walker, author of Why We Sleep, says that after just one night of RQO\ IRXU RU Ă€YH KRXUV¡ VOHHS your natural cancer-attacking cells drop by 70%. US researchers have discovered that when people work nights, they produce 80% less of a chemical which is a by-product of DNA tissue repair, indicating that their bodies aren’t carrying out the crucial cell restoration which should happen naturally overnight. Increased risk of Alzheimer’s Disease /RQJ WHUP LQVXIĂ€FLHQW VOHHS
Increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke Persistent sleep deprivation is associated with increased heart rate and blood pressure and KLJKHU OHYHOV RI LQà DPPDWLRQ which can all put extra strain on your heart. Over-45s who sleep less than six hours a night are 200% more likely to have a heart attack or stroke. Weakened immunity Sleep deprivation damages production and distribution of immune factors. Reduced fertility and libido Research has revealed that men and women who don’t get enough quality sleep have lower libido and less of an interest in sex. This may partly be linked to sleep apnoea, which disturbs sleep, as men who suffer from sleep apnoea also tend to have lower testosterone levels, which can lower libido. Regular sleep disruption can also reduce the secretion of reproductive hormones.

Weight gain and obesity Research shows that LQVXIĂ€FLHQW VOHHS LV D IDFWRU LQ weight gain and obesity. This is probably because sleep deprivation reduces levels of leptin (the hunger-inhibiting ‘you’re full’ hormone) and increases levels of ghrelin (the hunger-stimulating hormone). It’s a vicious circle, too, as you’re more prone to sleep
Increased diabetes risk People who usually sleep OHVV WKDQ Ă€YH hours a night, particularly those lacking deep or ‘slow-wave’ sleep, are at increased risk of developing diabetes. Their body processes glucose differently, reacting as though suffering from insulin resistance (a condition in which your body doesn’t react properly to insulin). Tiredness causes you to secrete more stress hormones (e.g. cortisol), making it harder for insulin to function correctly and leaving excess glucose in your bloodstream.
VLJQLÀFDQWO\ UDLVHV \RXU ULVN RI Alzheimer’s disease. Light Up Your Winter
By Katherine Sorrell
In the darkness of deepest winter, pay attention to your lighting. Could a quick update make it bright where necessary, cosy where wanted and as fashionforward as anyone could desire?
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR LIGHTNING • Using just one central pendant to LOOXPLQDWH D URRP FUHDWHV D Ă DW light with dark corners, making the space seem dull and small. If you are renovating, now’s the time to add wall lights, install some additional ceiling lights, or include some track lighting in cornices or bookcases. • To improve a boring lighting scheme quickly and easily, add extra lights at different heights – a table lamp in the corner, a Ă RRU ODPS LQ RWKHU PD\EH D FOLS light attached to a shelf. The aim is to create layers of light that come from different directions, and that you can adjust to suit your mood or the way you’re using the room. • Think about bulbs – save money by changing to LEDs, which last for years and are very cheap to run. How ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ they are is marked in kelvins - look for around 2,700K for a pleasant indoor light. Changing a pendant light can create a fabulous focal point in a room. The eight baubles on this contemporary chandelier cascade pretty, ambient light. Bubble chandelier, £79.99, Dowsing and Reynolds. When Søren Rose Studio travelled to the USA searching for beautiful old lamps, they rearranged the parts into mix-and-match new pieces with a bold modern aesthetic, inspired by New York City glamour in the late 1930s. Reade table lamp in solid brass, £189.95, Black By Design. This wonderfully sleek pendant light features a built-in, dimmable LED panel so you can adjust the light level to suit your mood. Shown here in Petrol, it is also available in Pearl, Forest, Anthracite, Ruby and Saffron. Asteria pendant, £179, Black By Design.
Great for a party – or even every day – plug in a colourful, neon lamp and illuminate your space with style. Lumosnap neon lights, £22-£50, Gingersnap.

• ‘Smart’ lighting is the way to go – use a remote control or an app on your phone to dim your lights, switch them on and off or even change their colours.
This smoky glass and brass table lamp would make a great update for a modern or retro-style living room. Boho smoke grey and brass table lamp, ÂŁ180, Alexander & Pearl.

Gardener’s Resolve‌ by Pippa Greenwood

out there throughout the worst of the weather, pretty well all furniture will take a serious battering – from rain, cold, ice and, in some cases, even fungi! Shop around for furniture covers that won’t break the bank or, better still, store the furniture in a shed or garage if you have one. Stored properly, it will last much longer and you’ll save yourself a fortune. GROW YOUR OWN This needn’t mean total selfVXIÀFLHQF\ IRU WZHOYH PRQWKV of the year, but aim to grow more of your own fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. It might mean buying yourself a couple RI WRPDWR SODQWV IRU WKH ÀUVW time, or creating a small herb planter, or it could be larger scale and more complex plans if you’re already big on grow-your-own...but increase what you do! Don’t forget that if you’d like UK-grown vegetable plants accompanied by my weekly advice and tips emails, \RX ZLOO ÀQG D JUHDW FKRLFH RI some of my favourite varieties at www.pippagreenwood.com/ grow-your-own. COMPOST MORE It is easy to put things that should be composted in the waste bin, but once you get in the swing of it composting will soon become second nature. Make it easier to compost kitchen waste by putting a
container in the kitchen for vegetable peelings, apple cores and so forth. Empty it regularly and there won’t be problems with smells. The amount of extra compost you’ll generate will be well worthwhile. Many local councils offer a really good deal on basic plastic composters. USE THAT SPACE! If you have a cold frame, porch, conservatory or greenhouse, put it to use! Far too many of these potentially great gardening structures are left abandoned for much of the year, perhaps just being graced with a handful of tomatoes for the summer months. Any sort of protected growing area has the ability to increase what you can grow and when you can grow it. So raise your own VXPPHU à RZHUV LQ LW IRUFH some bulbs in it in the winter or make off-season sowings of salad crops‌make it work, but whatever you do, don’t use it as the family rubbish dump! MULCH MORE Make use of any organic matter that is bulky – mulch with it. Whether it is well-rotted manure, garden compost, leaf mould, or the used compost from a seasonal bedding display or growing bag, make it into mulch! Applied a couple of inches or more deep over the soil surface, a mulch like this

Happy New Year! Now that 2018 is here, what are you going to resolve to do (or not do!) in the year ahead? I could write a book about what I need to do in the garden, but like those non-garden resolutions, I’ve long since realised that it is best to stick to things you’ve got at least some chance of achieving! So I’ll probably not say I’ll re-turf the lawn or create the much wished for wildlife-friendly pond‌I’ve been planning both of these for years with no sign of progress! RE-CYCLE POTS I’m sure that there is virtually no need to buy another plastic plant pot...and I’m sure that ODQGÀOO VLWHV ZRXOG EUHDWKH a sigh of relief if we could all stick to this resolution: save all the pots you get when you buy new plants, and any plugstyle trays that house bedding plants. Rinse them out and let them dry off, and next time you need a pot there will already be one there, free of charge as well as saving you a trip to the local garden centre. Pots stored away from sunlight will last much longer as they will be protected from the harmful rays of the sun which make many types of plastic disintegrate. COVER IT UP! Make a resolution to dry off and cover up garden furniture once the summer is over. Left

A win-win situation. PAUSE BEFORE YOU BUY When you’re looking through the seed, plant and bulb catalogues, browsing online or wandering around a garden centre, pause before you buy. Growing Up In A Digital World by Kate Duggan kateduggan.co.uk
Like it or loathe it, we’re leaving in a digital age, and many children have learnt to swipe, scroll and select long before they’ve mastered riding a bike. SCREEN TIME If you’re worried that your child is spending too much time staring at a tablet or smartphone, you might need to agree a daily time allowance. Most devices come with parental controls that you can activate. Alternatively, you can download software such as Qustodio (www.qustodio.com) to restrict usage and block inappropriate content. Some Ă H[LELOLW\ RQ WLPH OLPLWV PLJKW be needed, when your child has homework for instance, or you’re desperate for a lie-in. Apps such as Habyts (www. habyts.com) allow you to offer H[WUD VFUHHQ WLPH DV D UHZDUG for chores and good behaviour. Teenagers need to learn how to manage their own time, and how to protect themselves online. So you may want to loosen the reins as your child gets older, and discuss what they should do if they stumble across anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. SOCIAL MEDIA AND INSTANT MESSAGING 2QH LQ Ă€YH \HDU ROGV say they’ve been the victim of cyber bullyingš. However, social media can also be a 46
way for your child to connect with their peers, and they may feel ostracised if they end up missing out on conversations. If you do decide to let your teen have their own social media account, set some boundaries. )RU H[DPSOH \RX PD\ GHFLGH that they can only have an account if you’re their ‘friend’, with the understanding that you won’t post photos of them or publicly embarrass them online. You’ll also need to talk to your child about why they should never share their address or personal details on social media, and what to do if they’re being bullied or harassed. Be aware that teens often set up separate social media accounts to chat to their friends, DQG ZLOO EORFN \RX IURP Ă€QGLQJ them. And instant messaging apps are even harder to monitor. No safeguards you put in place will bypass the need to talk to your child about online safety. ONLINE LEARNING There are some really fun, educational sites and apps that might help to tear your child away from YouTube, including: Scratch (www.scratch.mit. edu) helps you child learn basic coding. Users can create simple games, animations and stories. Cbeebies (www.bbc.co.uk/ cbeebies) has a huge number of online games, puzzles
and other activities. The Alphablocks School Words 4XL] IRU H[DPSOH KHOSV SUH schoolers and reception-aged children learn to recognise simple words. You can organise games by their educational focus, such as maths, communicating and emotions. The user can ‘play’ with different materials and see how they react with each other. If you do let your child download any apps, check that they can’t make in app purchases without your approval, or you could be in for a nasty surprise. History Welcoming in the Old New Year
As we bring in 2018 with WRDVWV ÀUHZRUNV DQG D URXVLQJ UHQGLWLRQ RI $XOG Lang Syne, it’s perhaps worth remembering that 1HZ <HDU KDV EHHQ D ELW RI D PRYHDEOH IHDVW It is not written in stone that New Year be celebrated on 1st January. With the now wellknown and colourful carnival that takes place in London, most of us are familiar with the Chinese New Year that takes place a few weeks after our own. But did you know that some people in Europe also mark the start of New Year a little later than we do? The 2018 Chinese New Year will take place on WK )HEUXDU\ ZKLFK LV the 23rd day of the twelfth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. A national holiday in China, celebrations feature processions with drums, &KLQHVH GUDJRQV ÀUHFUDFNHUV to ward off evil spirits, and decorations in signature red for good luck, including banners and Chinese lanterns. 48
The Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring )HVWLYDO DQG celebrations which mark the end of winter and the start of a new crop year have been common since the pagan era, when New Year was traditionally observed on QG 0DUFK DW WKH WLPH RI WKH vernal equinox. Today, in common with the rest of Europe and most of the world, we all use the Gregorian calendar originally set up by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Europe universally adopted this calendar in the 18th century, although Russia was behind, changing over to it in 1918 after the Bolshevik Revolution. Previously, the older Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 46BC, had been observed. According to this calendar, New Year’s Day falls in the middle of January, after the end of the Advent fast. The Russian Orthodox Church continues to abide by the Julian calendar and although it is not recognised as a national holiday, the ‘Old New Year’ is still celebrated by Orthodox Christians in central and eastern Europe on 13th and 14th January. These countries include

It is customary to eat unleavened (pita) bread with a coin inside (or dumplings with a hidden FKDUP LQ 5XVVLD 0XFK like our Christmas pudding WUDGLWLRQ ZKRHYHU ÀQGV WKH coin will have good luck for the New Year. And in Serbia, WKH &KXUFK SXWV RQ ÀUHZRUN displays. The customary feast includes a range of pork dishes in the hope of securing a good farming year, the traditional St Basil celebratory dinner being a whole roasted pig. Another St Basil’s day morning tradition has been to eat ceremonial porridge that has been cooked overnight by the oldest woman in the house. The porridge would be prepared and put into the oven in the early hours of New Year’s Eve (13th), and the condition of the porridge the following morning would signify

Use Locally - Issue 57 January 2018 whether the year was to be a good one or not. Thick crusted porridge was auspicious, but thin pale porridge or a cracked pot spelled disaster for the household. Observing New Year in the middle of January is not uncommon and other countries across the world have their equivalents. Berber tribes LQ 1RUWK $IULFD 0RURFFR and Libya) mark New Year according to the Berber calendar, which roughly coincides with the Julian one. India also celebrates at this time, following the perceived change in the sun’s path from south to north, in a festival known as 0DNDU 6DQNUDQWL And parts of Switzerland see in New Year under the umbrella of St Sylvester’s Day. It can be said that no one knows how to welcome in
New Year like the Scots but although Scottish Hogmanay on the eve of 31st December is perhaps the most famous revelry of the New Year, the old Gaelic custom was to welcome New Year on 12th January. In Wales, this is still known as Hen Galan, and there are traditional Welsh songs associated with it that are sung today.
– a torch made from the breast bone of a sheep dipped in tallow.
The Gaelic year was broken up into quarters: earrach (spring), samhradh (summer), foghar (autumn) and geamhradh (winter), each marked by its own feast day. A few parts of Scotland continue to celebrate the Old New Year, known as Oidhche Chullaig or Oidhche Challainn where children would traditionally visit each home in their village reciting a Gaelic New Year blessing while carrying a caisein-uchd
,Q %XUJKHDG LQ WKH 0RUD\ )LUWK residents continue to celebrate Old New Year with the ‘burning of the clavie’ – a torch made of barrel staves, which is lit on the evening of 11th January.

January can often be a cold and dispiriting month following on from our Christmas and New Year festivities, so perhaps celebrating the ‘Old New Year’ in the middle of it isn’t such a bad idea after all.

The Life List
Here are some of the other anomalies:
All Above Board
- Whoever heard of a bank error in your favour?
Few games can inspire family arguments and grudges like Monopoly. Maybe it’s all that pretend money or the main objective being to bankrupt all of your opponents. But my biggest issue is that the game is riddled with inaccuracies.
- Everyone starts off with the same amount of money and makes their fortune in the property game on a roll of the dice. No business plan, no building regs / planning permission and not even a licence for a skip.
To start with, it’s called Monopoly but there are dozens of versions. As well as the various locations, you can also get special editions for: Batman, Alice in Wonderland (go to jail and off with your head?), Formula One, Star Wars (take a Chance card you must…), FIFA World Cup, Pirates of the Caribbean (community treasure chest?), and even a Dinosaur Edition (I make no bones about it).
- Even the traditional London version has Free Parking. In London? I ask you!
- The idea that anything can be insured for a £50 insurance premium. - Affordable utilities? In your dreams. Some elements are true to life though. It’s not unusual to visit a railway station and end up spending £200 for the privilege (seating optional!), and selling stock these days may well only net you around £50. They’ve even replaced some of the pieces, bringing in a T-Rex, a penguin and a metal ‘rubber’ duck. Is nothing sacred! By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk

McLaren 720S by James Baggot
I’ve just exited a roundabout – one I’ve left many times before in a variety of cars – and I’m heading down a familiar straight; I know it leads to a 90 degree right and yet more well-sighted, beautifullysurfaced road, but this time it’s different. I’m sat behind an exquisitelycrafted steering wheel, in a plum pudding purple leather cabin, and things are happening faster than they’ve ever happened before. Behind me, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is converting 710bhp into forward thrust that has to be experienced to be believed. Just a look at the numbers gives an indication of what the new darling of Woking has in its arsenal: 60mph in 2.8 seconds, 124mph in 7.8 seconds and 186mph in 21.4 seconds. That’s a lot of numbers that need perspective. Take the 124mph time as just one example: that’s just a few tenths slower than a Volkswagen Golf GTD manages to hit 60mph. In the same time, the 720S is doing double that speed. Double. :KLOH WKRVH ÀJXUHV JLYH \RX 58
some reference, what they can’t explain is the feeling that translates to when you’re sat behind the wheel. The g-force such explosive acceleration exerts on your body under IRRW WR WKH à RRU SRZHU LV like a roller coaster, like free falling from a plane as the world becomes a blur in your peripheral vision. Braking is sharp, shockingly sudden and painfully precise. The McLaren takes countryside sweepers, motorway miles and quick changes in direction and road surface in its stride. It’s incredibly capable and a huge step on from the 650S it replaces. Steering is pinpoint direct, well weighted and trembling with pins and needle-like feedback. The seven-speed automatic JHDUER[ ULà HV WKURXJK JHDUV like a sharp shooter - OK, maybe at load speeds it can be a bit grabby as shunt through the transmission is felt in the cabin, but at speed, in maximum attack, it’s rapid, slick and enjoyable. The rocker mechanism to the paddles is a joy too. Pull one and you can feel the other move away
from you, and vice versa. It’s a classy touch. Unfortunately it’s not all good news. The electronics, while much better and easier to use than the cars they have featured in before, are still buggy. Our test car warned us of impending suspension IDLOXUH ZKHQ LW ZDV ÀQH DQG of power steering catastrophe, again when there was nothing wrong. You wouldn’t forgive that on a car costing a tenth of a price, let alone one knocking on a quarter of a million pounds. The second disappointment is the noise. It’s all sucking, blowing and wind roar - there’s no start up, high speed thrum, or deep bellowing exhaust note. Just a rush of air intake and utterly ballistic forward motion. OK, it’s no Tesla, all silent propulsion, but then at the same time it’s no rival for Ferrari’s now equally-muted, but still much better, 488 soundtrack. Thankfully, the out-of-thisworld looks make up for some of those foibles. The dramatic doors stop petrol station punters in their tracks as you

arch them skyward. It can feel like you’ve live-paused passers-by in a TV show, their mouths slowly drifting towards WKH ÁRRU DV WKH\ ZDNH EDFN up. Rarely does a car send pedestrians into a dreamlike state quite like this McLaren. Huge air scoops, slits and slants in the bodywork add to the visual drama, while also playing an important part in directing the huge gulps of air the revised power plant needs to keep it cool. Sadly McLaren still has a lot of work to do in wiggling its way into the public consciousness - as much as those we encountered fell instantly in love with it, few knew what brand it belonged to, let alone which model it was.
But back to what the McLaren does best. I’ve got dials turned to slippery sport mode, and Wales to cross. The rain is just starting to cover the road with a glistening dew-like coating and the 720S is twitching in the bends, squirming as it hunts for traction. It’s palmdampening, but exciting, and about to create a journey that’ll be indelibly marked on my memory. This McLaren may not be quite perfect, but my word is it getting incredibly close.

Don’t miss Aladdin at The New Theatre Royal Lincoln New Theatre Royal Lincoln Aladdin ‘Defies Gravity’ and with a breath-taking magic carpet ride and stunning fire eating stunts at this years Pantomime.
O
pened officially by the Mayor of Lincoln, the much-loved traditional Theatre celebrated the first night of Aladdin with a FULL HOUSE. Audiences left full of festive cheer and in amazement after a quick paced, high energy and musical inspired, family friendly show. Children and adults gasped in astonishment as Jasmine and Aladdin explore Marrakesh from the nights sky and when the ‘baddie’ Abanazar appears magically through the stage floor. Highlights include the undeniable quick wit and lovable charisma of Cous Cous, played by CBBC star Chris Johnson and his pet monkey Pitta Pocket and the energetic dance numbers. The Pantomime is reminiscent of a musical with the soulful, silky-smooth tones of Andy Abraham as the Genie of the lamp and flawless duets from the beautiful Jasmine (Anna Hannides) and her beloved Aladdin (Alessandro Lubrano) Artistic Director Natalie Hayes Cowley explains Following last year’s successes with Cinderella, myself and the NTR theatre family wanted to raise the bar once again and create a truly spectacular Pantomime. By creating it ourselves we have been able to pull out all the stops – expect to be amazed! I don’t want to give too much away, but the audiences have been stunned by the flying carpet, some incredible fire eating stunts and our casts incredible singing ability.
Its been a labour of love for the entire team and we cannot wait for the people of Lincolnshire to see it. Over 20,000 people are expected to see the show this Christmas. For the first time in 70 years the Theatre has produced an exclusively inhouse Pantomime. This includes a brand-new script, handmade costumes and a handcrafted set built and painted by the New Theatre Royal’s technical department. This unique production celebrates a fantastic first year under new ownership. The Theatre has been brought back to life with a host of live theatre and music shows for the entire family and Aladdin, which runs throughout December until January 7th is no exception.
