Penny’s Korner Can you believe it, June is almost upon us, yikes half way through the year! June marks the anniversary for when my husband and I moved to Newark 3 years ago. We fell in love with Newark however it’s not been an easy time with road closers and shops shutting. Yet there is still much to love about Newark, the unique Royal Market square, bespoke shops , great places to eat & sit watching the world go by. It’s also easy to hop on a train to Lincoln for an enjoyable change of scene. Lots of work is being done behind the scenes to keep our beautiful towns alive and I feel we must show support by shopping & eating locally be it in Newark or Lincoln. Just sit outside enjoying a drink and take in the beautiful buildings we are surrounded by, plus the bespoke shops and keep in mind, by supporting local businesses we get to continue enjoying our beautiful towns.

Have a great month

Penny

Use Locally - Issue 74 June 2019 despite the extra interest you’ll pay over the course of the ORDQ WHUP ,WµV DOVR EHQH¾FLDO LI you need a high loan-to-value (LTV) mortgage.

Short-term or long-term mortgage – which is better for you? It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer number of mortgage products available, and the trend towards offering non-traditional mortgage terms doesn’t help when you’re trying to decide which loan is best. Banks and building societies are increasingly offering longer-term mortgages lasting 30 or 40 years alongside the ‘standard’ 25-year term with which many of us are familiar. Shorter-term mortgages of 15 years or so are also available, so what are the pros and cons of short-term and longterm mortgages, and which might be better for you? Why choose a short-term mortgage? Short-term mortgages have higher monthly repayments, but you’ll pay considerably less interest overall. If you’re able to put down a large deposit, you don’t need to borrow as much money, which is just one instance where short-term mortgages might be a good idea. An additional advantage is that, if you’ve been able to repay your mortgage sooner than later, the equity in your property will also grow faster. The initial consideration if you’re thinking about a short-term mortgage, however, is whether you can keep up repayments over this period. 6

Can you afford a short-term mortgage? Your monthly budget will dictate whether it’s possible to repay your mortgage over a shorter period of time than the standard term, but you need to be very careful not to overstretch yourself ¾QDQFLDOO\ Also bear in mind the potential interest rate rises in the future, particularly considering the low rates we’ve enjoyed for more than a decade. In other words, the only direction interest rates are likely to go is up, so it might be worthwhile considering mortgage payment protection insurance (MPPI) to cover your repayments if you fall ill or lose your job.

Younger applicants might be able to obtain a 35-year plus mortgage Why choose a long-term mortgage? You might choose a long-term PRUWJDJH WR EHQH¾W IURP ORZHU monthly payments. Perhaps you’re more at ease knowing you can comfortably afford the repayments on your biggest asset, and feel it’s worthwhile

Another consideration with long-term mortgages is your age, as although long-term mortgages are becoming more mainstream, some lenders still don’t offer this type of mortgage term if it means it will take the borrower into their retirement years. On the other hand, younger applicants looking for their ¾UVW SURSHUW\ PLJKW KDYH no problem in obtaining a mortgage with a duration of upwards of 35 years. So ZKDW DUH WKH PDLQ EHQH¾WV and drawbacks of lengthier mortgages? Pros of a long-term mortgage • Monthly repayments are lower. • Interest rate rises will have less impact. • You may be able to secure a higher loan-to-value ratio. Cons of a long-term mortgage • It takes longer to repay. • You pay more interest overall. • You may be refused on age grounds. Affordability is the keyword when thinking about mortgages – hopefully between you and your lender, \RXµOO EH DEOH WR ¾QG WKH ULJKW length of mortgage term and feel able to repay every month ZLWKRXW WRR PXFK GLI¾FXOW\ moneyfacts.co.uk/guides/ mortgages/should-i-pick-a-longterm-or-short-term-mortgage/ www.money.co.uk/mortgages/ should-you-get-a-long-or-shortterm-mortgage.htm By Ann Haldon

WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century. Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20]. Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15]. There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. Retro Festival Newark Retro Festival, the largest festival of all things past in the UK, will be heading to the Newark Show Ground for the third year running on the weekend of the 7/8/9 of June. This year as well as the largest I’m sure you could add the best value festival in the UK too! Where else could you camp and be entertained for 3 days by over 30 live bands all for £50 each for a party of four. Day tickets are available for as little as £10 for an adult! Oh yes under 11’s go FREE! And if you can’t go for the full weekend, day tickets are available on the gate as well as through the website www.retrofestival.co.uk After eight years at White Waltham and four successful years at Newbury Show Ground, Retro Festival have decided to bring the largest retro event in the UK further north to Newark again. If the line-up is anything to go by this years Retro Festivals will cement their place as the biggest festivals of all things vintage in the UK. If you have never been to the Retro Festival you are in for a treat. The show ground will be full of exhibits with over 1,000 classic cars, American RV’s, vintage caravans, Hot Rods, Airstream Caravans, Portafold Caravans, Steam Engines, a vintage 100 year old funfair, army re-enactors, plus over 200 vintage stalls selling everything from clothes to furniture. Add this to three live music marquees, Spitfire Pavilion – 1920’s to 1940’s swing and Jive, The Black Hangar – 1950’s Rock n Roll and Rockabilly and exclusively for the Newark event a new Alternative Outdoor Stage playing Northern Soul, SKA, MOD all playing till 11pm. Over the course of the weekend there will be over 30 live bands

performing, a full list can be found at; www.retrofestival.co.uk On Saturday evening, the Spitfire Pavilion hosts their own ‘Spitfire Cabaret’, transporting you back to the days of vaudeville with the best talent on the cabaret scene for your viewing pleasure. Expect glamorous burlesque beauties, tap dancing, songs from the music hall, not to mention skills from top circus acts. The great news is that camping is available and last year there was over 6,000 people staying in their tents/caravans or even in one of the glamping ‘Blossom Bell Tent Hire which are available to hire from the website.’ Don’t worry if you are concerned that camping might ruin your hairstyle as there is even an onsite hairdresser and barber to keep you looking

fabulous throughout the day and night. Handy if you want to enter into the best dressed competition and if you are a vintage fashion lover you will not have to miss the Spitfire Fashion show taking place on Sunday where the traders will be showcasing their latest fashion pieces. As well as the fantastic show the Retro Festival put on they have also, over the last few years, raised over £150,000 for local children’s charities and this years event will help raise money for The Children’s Bereavement Centre and The Children’s Heart Association. It really is fun for all the family at an affordable price.

Tickets available at www.retrofestival.co.uk

Sensational Summer Skin Finding the right sun lotion for your skin isn’t easy if you have sensitive skin. Some are too greasy or leave a white residue, and others can trigger prickly heat or eczema. I’ve tried a lot of lotions in my quest and Green People’s Scent Free Sun Lotion (ÂŁ22.50) is one of the best I’ve found so far. It’s gentle on skin, non-greasy, rubs in easily and contains chamomile, green tea and aloe vera to soothe and refresh skin. It’s also reef-safe and 30p from each sale is donated to the Marine Conservation Society. :LWK DQ 63) RI LWÂľOO GR žQH for my Cornwall holiday this year, although I might swap to Jason Sunbrellas Family Sun Block SPF45 in the unlikely event I get invited to somewhere a bit more tropical. See www. greenpeople.co.uk. Personally, I quite like my freckles. However, I’m not that keen on other areas of uneven pigmentation. Epionce’s MelanoLyte TX (ÂŁ81) is a daily exfoliating treatment that’s clinically proven to reduce hyperpigmentation problems, 16

such as melasma (dark, blotchy patches often linked to pregnancy) and sun spots. It also helps to remove dead skin cells so leaves skin feeling softer. I’m loving No 7’s new HydraLuminous Moisturising Foundation (ÂŁ15) and Concealer (ÂŁ14). The foundation is somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a traditional foundation. It blends easily, lasts all day, offers great coverage and doesn’t feel too heavy. I don’t wear make-up every day and have forgotten to remove this one several times because the lightweight formula means I can’t feel I’m wearing it. As an added bonus, the

I’ve taken to keeping some make-up wipes at the side of my bed for those evenings I forget to remove my makeup. At the moment, I’m using Image Skincare’s I BEAUTY Refreshing Facial Wipes (£12.40). Clean Air Day In the UK, outdoor pollution causes 40,000 deaths and costs around ÂŁ20 billion annually. Annual Clean Air Day is on Thursday 20th June. The coordinators, Global Action Plan, have a simple message this year: we need to work together to reduce pollution, and small steps make a difference. The health effects of pollution: On adults • Air pollution causes coughs, increased phlegm, increased lung cancer risk and reduced lung function, increasing risk of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). • Long-term pollution exposure is linked to several cardiovascular diseases, including coronary heart disease, and increased mortality from cardiac and respiratory causes. • Research showed people living in areas experiencing the highest levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution were 40% more likely to have been diagnosed with dementia than those in areas with the lowest levels, and are at increased risk of ‘silent stroke’ (symptomless small areas of brain damage caused by lack of oxygen). This may be a sign of blood vessel disease, connected to increased vascular dementia risk.

18

• Pollution increases risk of bladder cancer and Type 2 diabetes.

Air pollution can affect lung function and development in unborn babies. On children Effects are more serious, because their organs and immune system are still developing. • Air pollution can affect lung function and development in unborn babies. High levels are linked to low birth weight and premature births. • Exposure to air pollution can increase coughs, bronchitis and the risk of bacterial pneumonia. It also contributes to asthma development and worsens symptoms; long-term effects, severity and mortality rates increase with exposure and higher pollution levels. Reducing pollution • Open your window when cleaning, cooking, burning candles or decorating. • Don’t smoke indoors. Thirdhand smoke is a problem too. • Only burn smokeless fuels or dry, well-seasoned wood on your barbecue or stove. Ensure

Use fragrance-free or naturally-scented products, switch to more eco-friendly cleaning products and avoid aerosols. Walk, cycle and take public transport when possible. Drivers can be exposed to twice as much air pollution as pedestrians and nine times more than a cyclist. When that’s not an option, consider car-sharing or working from home sometimes, and walking bus or car share schemes for taking children to school. Use quieter backstreets, footpaths or cycle paths as much as possible. Using quieter streets can reduce exposure to pollution by 20%. Horoscopes by Russell Grant ARIES

LEO

SAGITTARIUS

March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

November 23rd - Dec 21st

You'll be indecisive at the beginning of June, due to a confusing New Moon on the 3rd. This is not a good time to sign a contract, submit official papers or enter into a verbal agreement. Legal problems will occur on or around the 17th, when the Full Moon forces you to make restitution to the other party. Don't let yourself be consumed by anger.

On the 3rd, the New Moon will put you in some unusual company. Although you'll like some of the people you work with, others will rub you the wrong way. Don't draw lines in the social sand just yet. A creative project won't turn out the way you intended on the 17th. That's because a stressful Full Moon has limited your finances. As a result, you've been forced to work with inferior materials.

The New Moon on the 3rd will pave the way to a romantic or business alliance. This relationship will be quite rocky. Your emotional needs are quite different. On the 17th, the Full Moon will trigger a troubling realisation. You'll change the way you feel about a relative. Someone you admired or hated has been putting on a false front.

TAURUS

VIRGO

CAPRICORN

April 21st - May 21st

August 24th - Sept 23rd

December 22nd - Jan 20th

On the 3rd, the New Moon will attract a problematic moneymaking opportunity. Although you welcome the chance to improve your income, you won't like your colleagues. You're a highly practical person who prefers keeping busy to building castles in the air. The Full Moon on the 17th will force you to confront an untrustworthy person.

A professional offer on the 3rd isn't what it seems. The New Moon is obscuring important details involving this position. You may be forced to work with a difficult colleague that can't be trusted. The Full Moon on the 17th brings a stressful domestic matter to a head. You're no longer willing to tolerate a relative or roommate's outrageous behaviour.

GEMINI

LIBRA

May 22nd - June 21st

September 24th - Oct 23rd

Apply for an exciting job on the 3rd. It may be impossible to land the position at this time, but the New Moon will increase your chances for future success. On the 17th, the Full Moon will force you to confront problems in an intimate relationship. The career constraints of a partner are undermining your bond. It may be necessary to go your separate ways.

The New Moon on the 3rd forces you to learn complicated concepts in a short period of time. You're fighting the clock; there is not much room for error. Studying with a quirky teacher will be daunting. On the 17th, the Full Moon will bring some upsetting news about work. You might be downsized from a failing company or be turned down for a desirable job.

Beware of undergoing a radical health regimen on the 3rd, when a rebellious New Moon can lead to rash decisions. Your system might not be able to handle the shock of a total overhaul to your diet and exercise routine. On the 17th, the Full Moon will bring an embarrassing secret to light. Instead of trying to maintain this cover up, come clean. Apologise to those who put their faith in you.

AQUARIUS January 21st - Feb 19th The New Moon on the 3rd makes you yearn for some free time, but you'll have difficulty finding it. Financial constraints make it difficult to take a vacation. If you want to make more money, it will be necessary to change your priorities. A group project will come to a close on the 17th, due to a stressful Full Moon. You'll discover that your values are radically different from others.

CANCER

SCORPIO

PISCES

June 22nd - July 23rd

October 24th - Nov 22nd

Feb 20th - March 20th

The New Moon on the 3rd warns against disclosing sensitive information. If someone confides in you, maintain their privacy. It will be tempting to share this information with others, but that will undermine your reputation as a trustworthy person. On the 17th, the Full Moon brings unnerving news about a health problem. It will be necessary to undergo a battery of tests.

On the 3rd, you'll be forced to deal with someone who makes you uncomfortable. You've always operated on instinct, while your partner relies on logic to make their decisions. This difference in approaches makes you distrustful. The Full Moon on the 17th brings disappointment in money. A payment will be far less than you expected.

Family matters are stressful in the early days of June. It's important to face painful truths on the 3rd, when the New Moon requires you to make some changes to your household. On the 17th, the Full Moon warns against assuming unrealistic career expectations. Ambition alone won't get you to the top. To reach your goal, it will be necessary to get advanced training.

Choose WKRVH IRUPXODWHG VSHFL¾FDOO\ for the plants where possible, or those suitable for foliageor ¿RZHULQJ KRXVHSODQWV Specialist fertilisers are also available for cacti and African violets.

Houseplant Heaven Now is the time to give houseplants some TLC as they could do with some pampering! Check them over thoroughly and remove and dispose of any that are heavily infested with pests or infected by diseases. Once done, continue as follows… • Pick over remaining plants removing dead, damaged or discoloured leaves. Use sharp scissors, special ‘snips’ or miniature secateurs on tough leaf stems.

the compost is free-draining and that there are crocks at the base of the pot. Consider adding additional grit or perlite to improve drainage.

Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months

• Houseplants usually respond well if repotted in late spring or very early summer, so if yours are pot-bound do this now. Check by carefully removing the plant from its pot – if the root system is quite congested, it’s usually time to move house.

• Once repotted, place plants in a cool, relatively stress-free environment for a week or two, away from hot or direct bright sunlight. Keep them adequately watered and the roots will move into the new compost.

• When repotting, only move the plants up one pot size and use compost as similar as possible to their current compost. If in doubt, seek advice from your compost supplier. Ensure

• Next, give them a bit of a bath, using well-moistened kitchen roll or cotton wool to wipe the leaves clean. Many of the more glossy-leaved houseplants respond well to an application

• Plants that have just been potted on will not require feeding for a couple of months, but both recently replanted and more established houseplants need regular watering, particularly as they start to grow and if they are in a fairly warm or sunny position. • Don’t place plants in too sunny a spot – they can get too hot or suffer from leaf scorching if placed too close to a south- or west-facing window. Use an east- or north-facing windowsill where possible, or at least move them further back from the glass. Most houseplants EHQH¾W IURP EHLQJ SODFHG LQ dappled shade in the garden, and they should thrive provided you keep them fed and watered. • If treating yourself to new houseplants, make sure that the plant is well-suited to the position that you have lined up for it – it’s tempting to buy those that do well in really sunny situations, but if you only have a fairly shady windowsill it will suffer immensely over the winter months. Great Outdoors Technology for long summer nights

The combination of long nights and nice weather means it’s time to head outdoors – and technology can help make the outdoors even greater and the light nights even brighter. Thanks to Bluetooth speakers, your music can go outside with you, but it’s wise to get a waterproof one just in case. We really like Denon’s DSB250BT, which has really high-quality music streaming and great sound. It’s pricier than some rival devices at around £129, but it looks good indoors as well as out. For something a bit more portable to take to the beach or hotel pool, the UE Wonderboom goes for around £55 and includes something most Bluetooth speakers GRQ¾W DQ LQ¿DWDEOH ULQJ VR \RX FDQ OLVWHQ WR LW LQ the water. Another great gadget for outdoor entertaining is the solar LED light. LEDs use tiny amounts of energy so it doesn’t take much sunlight to give them enough charge for hours of illumination. We’d recommend looking for warm white LEDs, which have a more yellow cast than the traditional blue ones: the light is warmer-looking and closer to incandescent bulbs, whereas bright white ones look a bit like car headlights. Expect to pay around £2 for a single LED post, rising to around £20 for a nice string of lights and £30 for a solar lamppost. If you’d rather have something brighter and PRUH ¿H[LEOH 3KLOLSV KDV DGGHG JDUGHQ OLJKWLQJ WR LWV L3KRQH $QGURLG FRQWUROOHG +XH V\VWHP which also works with smart home devices 36

such as Amazon Echo. The lights enable you to create ‘recipes’ for different effects as well as control each light individually, and while they’re still quite expensive – a coloured wall light is currently ÂŁ100 on Amazon – they’re very well made and work brilliantly. In the UK no matter how nice the day, the nights can get cold very quickly. If you’re considering garden heating, don’t go for a gas heater: they’re incredibly wasteful because they heat the air around them whether there are people there or not. It’s a much better idea to get an infra-red heater, which costs a lot less to run. Expect to pay around ÂŁ70 for a wall-mounted model and around ÂŁ120 for a tabletop model such as Charles Bentley’s 2000W electric outdoor patio heater. If you’re heating food rather than people, technology can even help with the humble barbecue: clip-on LED lights enable you to cook in the dark, while Bluetooth thermometers enable you to check on the food temperature without opening the lid and letting heat escape. You can get a no-name version for around ÂŁ20, but if brand names are important then Weber’s basic iGrill is currently ÂŁ56. The all-singing, alldancing iGrill 3 has two probes instead of one, enabling you to check on two things at once, and retails at just under ÂŁ100. In Anglo-Saxon times, June was known as midsummer month or sera monath, meaning ‘dry month’. It also brought with it the big pagan celebration of the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It was the Romans who were responsible for giving the sixth month in their Roman and our Gregorian calendar its current name. Jun(e) is believed to be a shortened version of Junius - Latin for ‘sacred to Juno’. Juno was the wife of Jupiter and patron goddess of Rome. She was also the goddess of marriage and childbirth. The blessing she was said to bestow on couples who marry during this month has meant that June weddings remain popular to this day. 42

In early Roman times, June had 29 days, but Emperor Julius Caesar added an extra day, making it 30 days long.

Driverless Cars Explained Driverless cars are a hot motoring topic, with manufacturers, politicians and transport chiefs all talking about them. But what are they, and what do they mean for the future of motoring? The Government predicts that driverless cars could be in full use on the UK’s roads by 2021. Are they safe? The safety of autonomous vehicles was questioned after a woman was killed while crossing the road in front of a self-driving vehicle in Arizona. The issue is the co-habitation of road users and the driverless vehicles – until people are sure how to interact with them, accidents will still happen. Which manufacturers currently offer some level of autonomous assistance? <RXµOO ¾QG VRPH SDUWLDO VHOI driving technology in cars from Audi, BMW, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most cars do incorporate the 44

technology, but it can include features such as adaptive cruise control. Levels of autonomy The various levels of autonomous assistance are FDWHJRULVHG IURP RQH WR ¾YH Here’s what they mean. Level 1 Introduced around 1990s/00s This base level means that just one element of the driving process is taken over by the car – but the driver is still very much in charge. This level of assistance is mature now and was pioneered by early cruise control systems. Level 2 Present day Level 2 autonomy represents pretty much where we are today. Computers can deal with multiple functions, so the car can take control of steering, throttle and brake functions – but the driver must show they’re in charge of the car by putting a hand on the steering wheel. Level 3 Estimated 2020 At level 3 all of the safety-critical functions can be controlled by the car, but the driver must still be

Level 4 Mid 2020s Level 4 sees cars capable of being fully autonomous, albeit in selected areas – most likely inner-city ones. Dedicated lane markings and infrastructure will be required to ensure that the cars keep on the straight and narrow, too. Complex mapping systems will combine with advanced cameras, sensors DQG DUWL¾FLDO LQWHOOLJHQFH WR determine where the car should go. The driver may have to intervene at certain points, but for the most part it’ll mean hands-free driving. Level 5 Late 2020s/early 2030s Level 5 will see the vehicles derestricted – they will be capable of driving anywhere, without the need for a driver. There won’t be a need for a steering wheel or traditional ‘controls’; these vehicles will be fully capable of operating themselves. It’ll free up space inside the cars, so they’ll probably look more like lounges on wheels. That’s what we predict, anyway. Timeline predictions This timeline is based on predictions by many different manufacturers, though most agree that the bulk of progress will happen between 2020 and 2030. It’s a real technology race at the moment – each company is attempting to develop their own systems quicker than the rest. It’s why these dates are estimations – some may get there sooner than others. James Baggott

Four Summer Pet Health Hazards You May Not Have Considered You’re probably aware of many of the dangers your pet faces during the summer months, but here are four unusual health hazards you may not have thought about. 1.
