Karol’s Korner
The weather and the nights have suddenly started drawing in! November has started to show its face with leaves falling and trees turning their autumnal colours. Where has 2019 gone? I had so many plans for this year and time has just escaped me. How about you? When you look back at the year so far, have you accomplished those things you set out to do? Perhaps it was personal development or moving home or even upgrading some rooms in your house? Maybe a new job was high on the agenda for you? Causes close to our hearts here at Use Locally are still as important as ever and there has been a shift in our thinking as Vegan living becomes more the norm. Animal welfare is a high priority too! Looking at how small changes in our lives can make a bigger impact is something discussed in our vegan article, you may find that there’s simple changes you can make too, to make your life richer and more eco-friendly. Wed love to hear if you have made changes in this way via our Facebook page. Have a warm November

Use Locally - Issue 79 November 2019 New, uber-soft PJs are a must for Christmas, but ones bedecked with snowmen DQG VQRZ¿DNHV FDQ IHHO RXW of place by New Year. We like these organic, Fairtrade pyjamas by OceanBluu. They’re kind to skin, kind to the people who make them, and kind to the planet. The brand is plastic-free and donates a pair of PJs and underwear to a child in need for every purchase. They’re £25 from www.oceanbluu. com.
Gifted Inspiration for 0 to 8s Are you planning to welcome a mischievous elf to your home this year? How about this crocheted version from Best Years? It’s handmade, Fairtrade and rather cuter than the plastic mass-produced versions. It’s £18.99 from www.bestyears. co.uk. Ewan the Dream Sheep (£39.99) is sure to prove popular with newborns and new parents alike. This award-winning modern classic has been helping babies (and parents) to get some shuteye for 10 years now. It mimics the environment a baby has grown comfortable with in the womb, by glowing softly and playing soothing sounds. Rather than jangling nursery rhymes (which parents will grow 8
to hate rather quickly), Ewan’s main sound is a recording of a heartbeat, which is then combined with other gentle sounds, such as white noise or rainfall. The deluxe version even turns on automatically when a baby cries. Anything that babies and toddlers come into contact with is likely to get grubby rather quickly, particularly when they’re as soft and cuddly as Ewan. Luckily, you can take the electronic pod out to give him a good wash. Looking for a new Christmas duvet for your child? We love the Christmas Jumper Bedding Set from George at Home. And the cuddly Yeti Stocking from Sainsbury’s (£4) is sure to be loved long past Boxing Day.
Ice cream and lollies may not be the most appealing of treats to adults in winter, but kids love them all year around. And GLTC’s wooden Lolly and Scoop Ice Cream Shop (ÂŁ65, www.gltc.co.uk) will last a lot longer than the edible variety. There are ice lollies, cones, wafers, tubs and ice cream balls ready to scoop up and serve. Perfect for imaginative play. The White Stuff Christmas Veg Box Set is a bargain at ÂŁ9.95. Veganism is a significant lifestyle change that requires ongoing determination and commitment. Good preparation is key, doing your research is vital due to there being much misleading & negative information regarding the vegan diet. Talking to other vegans, acquainting yourself with vegan products and finding local restaurants that will accommodate vegans is a great start. Here are some top tips that will greatly help you in your transition towards a plant-based lifestyle…
M
eatless Mondays – This refers to removing or replacing all meat products for at least one day in your week, typically a Monday, but can be changed to whichever day suits your timetable best. An easy way to start this is to “Veganise” your go-to meals. For example, if you love Mac & Cheese, all you need to do to veganise this meal is replace the cheese with a non-dairy cheese alternative, which leads nicely into my next tip.
Plant-based Milk – There is now a plethora of non-dairy alternatives that are available for purchase. Give several a taste test, not all plant-based milks are created equal, and your taste buds may reject one brand’s flavouring, yet love another. For myself, Alpro Soy milk is my personal go-to. Visit a Vegan Restaurant – Visiting a 100% plant-based restaurant can give you some much needed inspiration for what recipes to cook or veganise. You can also introduce friends and family members to the wonders of vegan food. Vegan food is often discredited as unhealthy or untasteful, but everybody’s tastes are different, and understandably there are some products out there, that give Veganism a bad reputation. Just like omnivorous eating, you will need to try a variety of new recipes and pick and choose the flavours you enjoy most. Not all vegan food is created equal. Vegan Junk Food – Speaking of not all vegan food being equal,

there has recently been a surge in veganfriendly junk foods. Replacing your snack food with vegan-friendly alternatives can be trivially easy, from dairy-free ice-cream to Sour Patch Kids sweets, there’s something to satisfy any craving. Eat one vegan meal per day – Similar to Meatless Mondays, eating at least one vegan meal per day is a very simple and quick way to help in your transition. Eating as a vegan doesn’t have to be restrictive, just load your plate with an extra serving of your favourite veg, add a carb source, and finally change the animal products with a suitable replacement, such as tofu or a fake meat. Just ensure you are eating enough calories, vegan food is much less calorie dense, yet much more nutritious per calorie.

Hopefully these tips have given you some much needed help in making the change to a cruelty free lifestyle.
B12 – There is a large and somewhat valid concern that the vegan diet can lack Vitamin B12. This is because B12 is made by bacteria in soil, also heavily supplemented into the livestock people consume, therefore eating fortified foods or simply taking a B12 supplement can solve this issue. It is very important to check with your GP before you begin your transition. Many Doctors could disagree with your new lifestyle change, yet please don’t let this deter you and allow them to change your mind. Doctors receive very little nutrition training, although you should check your levels of vitamins and minerals before & regularly after you change your lifestyle. Ask other vegans – Creating a network of other vegans can be beyond helpful in maintain your new lifestyle. Joining your local vegan group will help you with finding new

WHO ARE THE CHRISTADELPHIANS? “Who are these Christadelphians?” we hear you say. Let us tell you. They are a community bound together by a common faith in the gospel preached by Jesus Christ and his apostles: and have borne the name “Christadelphian” since the mid-19th century.
NOVEMBER TALKS
Their name encompasses in one word the phrase, “brethren in Christ”, a phrase used by the apostle Paul to describe 1st century Christians. [Cf. Colossians 1:20].
3rd November Speaker R. Adams Subject: One prophecy proves the Bible true beyond doubt
Their faith and teaching stem solely from the Holy Bible, which, as the word of Almighty God, they acknowledge as the sole authority on matters of belief and conduct. They do not believe that any of their members, past or present, have received any special revelation, but that it is the Bible alone that is able to bring men and women to a knowledge of the way of salvation through Jesus Christ. [CF. 2 Timothy 3:15].
10th November Speaker D. Talbot Subject: Jesus in the Old Testament
There has been a Christadelphian community in Newark for over 168 years, and they now meet in their own hall in Cliff Nook Lane, off Appleton gate, NEWARK, NG24 1LY. On Sunday evenings, commencing at 5.15pm, where the first century Christian gospel is preached, and Bible teaching on aspects of behaviour is examined. You are warmly invited to join us. In addition you may wish to log on to our international website: www.thisisyourbible.com.
17th November Speaker S. Parsons Subject: If there is a God why does He allow suffering? 24th November Speaker M. Briggs Subject: The Bible fake new or real ?

Let There Be Light • When you are seeking an inexpensive update, simply remove any dull, old, lessthan-stylish table lamps and plug in your new, on-trend, up-to-the-minute choices and voila! an instant change of look. • Use a table lamp to create a welcoming reading corner in a living room, or simply to introduce a cosy pool of light in a dark area. They look great on a hall console or a small table on a landing, and are, of course, both practical and beautiful either side of a bed. • Lanterns are even easier than lamps, as they don’t need a nearby plug. If you are wary of using candles for safety reasons, substitute battery-operated LED candles instead. • Buying more than one lamp for a room? Identical pairs look smart and traditional, but you don’t have to buy them all the same. A range of styles can create interest and work in different areas. It is, however, worth choosing styles that have colour, pattern, material or shape in common, in order to give the room a sense of overall cohesion.

You can't afford to ignore a tense financial situation in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th insists you re-think your spending habits. It may be necessary to find a more lucrative job, curtail luxury purchases and pay off some debts. On the 26th, the New Moon warns against venturing into unknown territory. Although you long for adventure, you need a reliable guide.
You'll be expected to do some damage control at work in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th could shed light on an ongoing problem. Dealing with dissatisfied customers will be challenging. You'll have to fight to strike a compromise that satisfies both clients and your company. Listen more than you speak. On the 26th, the New Moon will put you in the path of romance.
SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st It will be time to make a decision about a health matter on the 12th. The Full Moon will require you to find a treatment for a nagging ache and pain. It's possible this problem could be stress-related. Making changes to your daily routine is critical to your wellbeing. If this means breaking a bad habit, getting treatment for an addiction or leaving a toxic situation, do it.

December 22nd - Jan 20th
Mid-November will push you to be more demanding. On the 14th, the Full Moon will prompt you to confront a demanding friend, romantic partner or business associate. If you sense they'll never give you the support and sympathy you need, you may decide to go solo. Although this situation will be highly emotional, it will make logical sense.
Returning from a trip or graduating from a course of study could be rather deflating in mid-November. Instead of celebrating this achievement, the tense Full Moon on the 12th will make you nervous about the future. While it's true you won't be sure about your next moves, that isn't a bad thing. Keep your options open and stop pressuring yourself to forge a new path.
A creative project won't get the reception you desire on the 12th. That's when a tense Full Moon heaps harsh criticism upon you. Resist the urge to be defensive, especially on social media. Maintaining a quiet, dignified silence will prompt fair minded people to take a second look at your work. You're being unfairly accused of broadcasting a troubling message.

A shocking secret will come to light, due to a revelatory Full Moon on the 12th. You'll be dismayed to discover a charming colleague has been involved in underhanded activity. If they ask for you to cover their mistakes, refuse. You can't compromise your relationship for the sake of this manipulator. Protect your interests. The New Moon on the 26th indicates a partnership will take root.
On the 12th, the Full Moon will bring an unexpected expense. You'll have to scramble to pay this bill. Keep a careful eye on your bank balance. It could dip into the red if you forget to record an outgoing cheque or monthly payment. Although this situation is frustrating, it is also a teaching moment. Learning to stick to a budget will help you make the most of your finances.
Home and family demand your attention on the 12th. That's when the Full Moon makes you realise how much you've been neglecting your nearest and dearest. Being in constant communication with work has undermined your personal relationships. It's time to change your priorities. This may mean leaving a position that requires you are constantly on call.

A group effort won't pan out the way you wanted. A tense Full Moon on the 12th indicates creative squabbles. This is one of those situations where too many cooks have spoiled the broths. Although you have worked to keep your ego in check, this has only allowed pushier individuals to get their way. You'll be highly disappointed with the result.
The Full Moon on the 12th brings attention to a troubled relationship. You will no longer be able to ignore the troubling behaviour of someone close to your heart. Resist the temptation to explain away these jarring incidents. Instead, suggest you go to counselling together. If your friend will not get help, you may decide to talk to a professional and seek their advice.
You won't be able to put off mundane tasks in mid-November. The Full Moon on the 12th will require you to stop what you're doing and attend to routine paperwork and household chores. Negative feedback from an authority figure will raise your hackles. It will take all your strength to maintain a dignified silence while they heap criticisms on you.

Since 1215, when King John put his signature to the Magna Carta, all sorts of laws have crept onto our statute books. A number of new ones are introduced each year: legislation introduced in 2019 covers a range of issues, from the use of drones to the gender pay gap. We may be keen on creating new laws, but it appears we’re not quite as good at getting rid of old ones that are no longer žW IRU SXUSRVH ,QFUHGLEO\ some of these laws are still in force today, although a few date back to medieval times and are so obscure that you could commit an offence without even knowing. also makes it an offence for a pub landlord to permit drunkenness or disorderly conduct on the premises, while the Licensing Act 2003 makes it illegal to sell alcohol to a person who is drunk, or to obtain alcohol for someone who is intoxicated. But next time you notice a drinker who has had one too many, it may be advisable not to show off your knowledge of the law. You could end up with a black eye for your trouble. Low al-cow-hol beer, please The Licensing Act 1872 not only outlawed drunkenness in pubs, it also made it an offence to put salt in beer (something crafty landlords did to make their customers extra thirsty, thus increasing
sales). Another unusual clause in the same act made it illegal to be drunk in charge of a cow or a steam engine on a highway or other public place. So if there’s a lesson to be learned from the 1872 Licensing Act, it’s surely this: if you drive your steam engine to the pub and then consume too many salty beers, it’s best not to rely on Daisy the Cow for your ride home. Parliamentary protection? Nowadays it seems there are always battles raging in parliament, so it’s probably just as well that a law from 1313 forbids people from entering the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour. The PM and Chancellor can also relax:
numbers 10 and 11 Downing Street are protected by section 55 of the Metropolitan Police Act 1839, which makes LW LOOHJDO WR ¾UH D FDQQRQ within 300 yards of a dwelling house. These are just a few of the unusual laws that still have a place on the UK’s statute books. The British legal system has been built up over centuries of law creation, amendment and repeal, so a ‘spring clean’ is probably long overdue. For the moment, however, we can go on enjoying the comedy value of these archaic pieces of legislature, safe in the knowledge that the long arm of the law is unlikely to reach out and grab us by the collar. From Open Plan To Broken Plan
Continued on page 30
Despite the allure of large, bright spaces, it is not necessarily convenient to live in an openplan home all the time. Hence the development of ‘broken plan’ design. Everyone loves open-plan living. Light, bright, spacious and airy, an open-plan home is always desirable. Or is it? after that?” “It’s funny you should ask,” Doreen said. “Our Elsie visited with Nanna’s ashes, and there was another cat incident. It knocked the urn over,” she continued, “so we had to scoop everything up and…” “Put it in the trophy?” Roy asked miserably. “Like I said,” Doreen shrugged, “you’ve got to grab what’s handy.”
A Busy Year for Best in Show “Have you displayed it in pride of place all year?” Roy Cheddar, local councillor responsible for overseeing the Village in Bloom award ceremony, optimistically surveyed Doreen’s chaotic living room. “It was on the sideboard,” Doreen dithered, looking under the settee cushions, “but the cat took umbrage so I moved it out of harm’s way.” Doreen had won the coveted ‘Best in Show’ trophy for KHU ZLQWHU ¿RZHULQJ EDVNHWV last year. Roy’s task was to retrieve that trophy, in order for it to be presented to this year’s winner. “I remember!” Doreen straightened up. “I took it down the Feathers to celebrate.” “You took it to the pub?” Roy raised his eyebrows. ²7KHQ , ZRQ WKH PHDW UDI¿H ³ Doreen pushed past him into the kitchen. “I carried my chops home in it and then put it in the freezer”. can’t put it in a freezer.” “Well it’s not in there now anyway.” Doreen closed the door with an icy blast. “I’m sure I used it for my bread sauce at Christmas.” Roy frowned. “You’re supposed to display it.” “I’ve got no time to dust knickknacks.” Doreen waved her hand. “After Christmas, what then?” Roy sighed. “Follow me.” Doreen opened the door of her downstairs WRLOHW ², KDG D ¿RRG LQ KHUH ³ “You used it for a leaky lavatory?” Roy asked in horror. “Well it was just the right size,” Doreen nodded, “and the cat had already been sick in it by then.” “The cat did what?” Roy wasn’t sure if he wanted to see this cup again. “She’d eaten all the bread sauce,” Doreen shrugged, “and sometimes you’ve just got to grab what’s handy.” “It’s going to need a professional clean.” Roy frowned, “So what happened
“Elsie’s got the trophy then?” Roy pulled out his phone. “Shall we give her a ring.” “Good idea,” Doreen nodded emphatically. “What’s the time difference in Tasmania?” That was enough; Roy made an executive decision. “It looks like it’s gone for good,” he sighed, opening the front door. “I’ll have to buy a new one. I’m very disappointed in you Doreen.” Doreen pulled a tissue from her sleeve. “I’m sorry I’ve let you down.” She blew her nose. “I tried to look after it, but a lot can happen in one year.” “There, there, can’t be helped.” Roy softened. “I’ll JHW VWUDLJKW EDFN WR WKH RI¾FH and sort this out.” He waved as he walked down the path, deciding this was a lesson learned: not everyone can be trusted with precious things. If he’d been paying more attention he might have noticed the trophy-shaped dust-free patch on Doreen’s sideboard, or that she didn’t even own a cat. By Jackie Brewster

Winter Hanging Baskets I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for hanging baskets – they are a great way to create your own miniature gardening space, do exactly what you want by the way of colours clashing or subtle, and once they’ve started to grow away and establish they’re a perfect way to make even the gloomiest back yard look more cheerful, or the prettiest patio look even more gorgeous. Making a KDQJLQJ EDVNHW LV QRW GLIžFXOW and within a few weeks of planting one up you’ll wish you had made more. Although traditionally a summer planting feature, hanging baskets work just as well for the winter months, so why not create a few seasonal splashes of colour to keep your spirits up over the coming months? 36
Plenty of plants make for a good colourful basket, so start with a visit to your local garden centre or nursery to see what is available.
Although traditionally a summer planting feature, baskets work just as well for the winter months There are lots of plants you might use, including winterÂżRZHULQJ SDQVLHV , DP IRQG of the purple and yellow varieties) and heathers, Gaultheria with its waxy red berries, dianthus for late autumn into early winter and assorted miniature shrubs, including variegated Pieris, Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’ and variegated euonymus that will help give structure
You will also need a liner and I recommend a thicker, almost felt-like one as this helps to provide plenty of insulation for when temperatures drop, as well as keeping the compost and plants in place. In addition you’ll need a basket (you can always reuse a summer one, no need to spend more than necessary), and I suggest a 35cm (14â€?) diameter one as it can take more plants and, because it is larger, resists cold better. You’ll also need some compost. There is nothing worse than trying to plant up a basket that keeps rolling about, VR VWDQG LW LQ D ODUJH ÂżRZHU pot before you start. Can you bag a bargain on Black Friday November is the month of big deals. Are some too good to be true? Black Friday is the annual sales event that crossed the Atlantic to become huge in the UK too. But does that mean you’ll get a good deal? Black Friday is actually two big days of deals: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday is the start of the Christmas shopping season in the US, because it’s when retailers traditionally ran ‘door-buster’ sales on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. The following Monday has been dubbed Cyber Monday because apparently everybody goes back to work, panics about Christmas presents and hits the online shops on the same day. Black Friday gets bigger every year. A long weekend became a week of deals, until now Black Friday runs for two weeks or more, with all kinds of deals announced well in advance as ZHOO DV ÂżDVK ´OLJKWQLQJ GHDOVÂľ RQ %ODFN )ULGD\ DQG Cyber Monday. It’s become the most important part of the retail calendar not just for technology but for many retailers selling fashion, homeware and jewellery too. It’s a good time to buy smart home technology, which attracts massive discounts at this time of year. Can you really get good deals? The answer is a TXDOLžHG \HV 7KHUH DUH SOHQW\ RI GHDOV WR EH KDG but some of them are illusory: common tactics include listing RRPs that no sensible person would pay – you’ll see this a lot with TVs, which promise massive discounts on recommended retail prices nobody paid – or gently increasing prices in the run-up to Black Friday so they can be lowered in time for the big event and labelled with a big ‘Sale!’ sticker. And like any sale, often the deals are on products that are being phased 40
out to make room for new products or because they’re no longer being made. End-of-line products aren’t necessarily bad buys, but research anything before you decide whether or not to spend. Before you hit the ‘Buy Now’ button on a bargain, search for it in Pricespy.co.uk. That shows you what other retailers are selling the product for, and tells you whether you’re really getting a good deal. It works on everything from DVDs to dishwashers and it also tells you whether products are in stock: a deal isn’t much use if you can’t actually order the product. If you’re looking at a deal on Amazon, have a look at uk.camelCamelCamel.com. Simply copy and paste the address of the Amazon product listing or the exact product name and it’ll show you the price history – so for example if we search for the cult favourite Instant Pot pressure cooker we can see that while its price varies from ÂŁ70 to ÂŁ130, it’s usually sold for around ÂŁ90. One of the simplest tricks to Black Friday and Cyber Monday is to make sure you only buy things you actually need. This time last year we bought some fancy headphones on Black Friday; this week we’re selling them on eBay, still in the original sealed packaging. A bargain isn’t a bargain if you don’t use it. Images: top left clockwise - CamelCamelCamel lets you see any Amazon product’s price history. Amazon offers big Black Friday discounts on products such as its Echo speaker. Hue lights are another safe bet for Black Friday discounts. Instant Pot electric pressure cooker, a consistent Black Friday top seller.

Use Locally - Issue 79 November 2019 dealing with aftersales issues. You can’t beat good oldfashioned word of mouth either – asking friends, neighbours and relatives about a potential dealership can be useful too.
Here’s how to buy a new car Buying a new car. It’s often referred to as one of the biggest purchases of your life, after a house. It’s why getting your hands on a new motor can be riddled with stress and anxiety, but it doesn’t have to be that way. We’ve picked out some of the crucial ways in which the buying process can be made easier, and what to look out for. Research the car It may seem trivial, but you need to research everything you can about the car you’re looking at. Knowledge is power when it comes to buying from a dealer, and making sure you know everything about a certain model can make all the difference when it comes to picking one up. Don’t be afraid to be choosy, either. Pick a colour, VSHFL¾FDWLRQ DQG HQJLQH DQG stick with that. Choosing a dealer – franchise or independent This is an important decision to 44
make. Franchised dealers get ¾UVW DFFHVV WR WKH ODWHVW FDUV DQG technology, and are therefore potentially better equipped at answering any questions you may have. In terms of aftersales and repairs, they have the manufacturer’s support too. They’ll also have a good selection of used vehicles that will have been well maintained in the main dealer servicing department. There is, of course, the option to buy from an independent dealer too. They might not have the ability to offer you different options of the model you’re looking at, but they will be keen to do a deal and will offer the backup of a well-established business should things go wrong. Check them out online Once you’ve picked the dealer you fancy, look through their online reviews thoroughly. You’ll be able to easily see how well they treat their customers and also how good they are at
Pick your purchase time Believe it or not, you can get a better deal depending on when you buy. Dealers are often pressed to reach quarterly targets, which means the end of March, June, September and December could result in a better deal. It’s a small tip, but one that could potentially see you saving thousands of pounds if the purchase is timed correctly. Test drive Once you’ve seen a car you like then it’s time to get behind the wheel. The likelihood is that the salesperson will accompany you in the car, but don’t let that stop you from pressing all of the buttons and getting a real feel for the vehicle in general. Ensure that your test route features a range of different corners, roundabouts and road surfaces – and most importantly, check the car works for you. &DVK RU ¾QDQFH There’s a variety of ways to pay at a dealer. They can offer hire purchase, which sees you paying a deposit and repaying the remaining balance in monthly instalments. At the end of the payment term, you’ll own the vehicle outright. Then there’s personal contract purchase, or PCP. Here, you’ll pay a deposit followed by
Use Locally - Partners with Invest Newark & Sherwood, the business arm of NSDC
Use Locally - Issue 79 November 2019 monthly payments, but at the end you’ll be offered a ‘balloon’ when you can pay off the remainder of the car’s value or return it to the dealer. And then there’s personal leasing. This is a good option if you’re planning on frequently changing your car, although you do have to usually stump up three months’ rental in advance, and there’s no option to buy it at the end of the deal. Or you could pay cash! Haggle It’s an age-old process, but haggling remains just as crucial today as it’s always been. Even with used cars there’s always going to be a certain amount of wiggle room. You shouldn’t ever have to pay the full price for a car, and dealers are prepared for this. Go in strong and stick to your
guns – it’s only the same as they’ll be doing. Remember, if you don’t ask you don’t get, so don’t be afraid to ask for free additions and discounts on servicing plans. The worst they can do is say no! Don’t be scared of walking away Remember, there are
thousands of cars available on the market and hundreds of dealerships too. There is always another car, so don’t be scared to walk away if things don’t feel right. Don’t be pressured into any deal either ° WKH ¾QDO GHFLVLRQ LV HQWLUHO\ yours, and if you don’t like the way things are heading, walk straight out of those doors! By James Baggott
