Karol’s Korner

Wow, well it seems like we are finally moving forward into Spring and life can regain a bit of normality! How I am looking forward to that! It seems as though Covid has dominated our lives for far longer than a year and like you, I am keen to regain my freedoms and to see family once more! I have just reread my January Editors letter and thought about how my New Years resolutions have been going – or not!! And in my case NOT! How have you fared with them? Spring is all about growth and regeneration and is my favourite season of the year, its wonderful to see the daffs popping their heads above ground and some blue sky once more. Personal growth is another high on my list, and over the last year I have learnt a lot about myself and have realised the value of family is far higher for me than anything else, with this in mind I am stepping away from Use Locally from now on and have found a wonderful lady, Christa Hallam, who will be looking after all my precious readers and the magazine that has been my baby for the last 8 years. I know she will be a wonderful new energy for the magazine and as you get to know her you will find that too. So it’s been a glorious 8 years, I have loved every minute of it and now it’s time to hand over to someone new. I would really like to thank everyone who has supported me over the years and all my clients and advertisers, many of whom have become friends, and to you, my precious readers, without whom there would be no magazine. Not forgetting all the distribution team who have cheerfully delivered, rain and shine, your precious copy of Use Locally. And of course the main stalwart of the magazine, Michella, without whom this would never have been the magazine that it is, Michella remains part of Use Locally and will continue to look after you all, with the love and attention she always has. Lots of love, stay safe

LEO

March 21st - April 20th

24th - August 23rd

Railing against cancelled plans will be a waste of valuable energy in early April. Instead of trying to put things back on track, move in a different direction. On the 12th, the New Moon will find you adopting a fashionable look that turns heads. The Full Moon on the 26th could put strain on an intimate relationship. Resist the urge to put so much emphasis on the physical part of your union.

April begins with a powerful desire to expand your horizons. Scheduling a long-distance trip or enrolling in an advanced course will fill you with excitement. On the 12th, the New Moon could prompt you to embark on a spiritual journey. Don't despair of a career path dries up on the 26th; the Full Moon will connect you with bigger and better professional opportunities.

TAURUS

VIRGO

April 21st - May 21st

August 24th - Sept 23rd

Solitude is bliss during the opening days of the month. Take this opportunity to daydream, develop creative projects and connect with your spiritual side. The New Moon on the 12th will heighten your intuition; pay careful attention to your dreams. On the 26th, the Full Moon warns against making whimsical demands on your partner, or a breakup could be imminent.

Passions will be running high at the beginning of the month. If you're in love, you'll want to spend every second with your amour. Are you single? You could meet someone special through a competition. The New Moon on the 12th could attract a financial windfall. Use this money to buy a car, computer, or electronic device that makes life easier.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - Dec 21st Love, romance and adventure will characterise the first half of April. Put responsibility on the back burner and take a few risks; you could use a few thrills. On the 12th, the New Moon will urge you to start a creative project that speaks to your heart. The Full Moon on the 26th may bring a shocking secret to light; brace yourself.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - Jan 20th Sticking close to home will make you feel grounded at the beginning of April. Resist the temptation to work overtime during this period; your nearest and dearest need you more. The New Moon on the 12th could prompt you to launch a renovation project. By the time the Full Moon rises on the 26th, you may grow tired of a social group and leave its ranks.

GEMINI

LIBRA

AQUARIUS

May 22nd - June 21st

September 24th - Oct 23rd

January 21st - Feb 19th

Your social side will be in full evidence at the start of April. It's important to keep in continual, even if you can't meet with loved ones personally. Video conferences and online chats will keep your spirits high and creativity flowing. On the 12th, you may decide to join a support group or artists' collective, thanks to the outgoing New Moon.

A close relationship will be a profound source of pleasure at the start of April. If you're single, you could meet someone special through a cultural, religious, or educational organisation. The New Moon on the 12th is ideal for signing a contract, exchanging vows, or entering a creative collaboration. Your finances could pick up during the second half of the month, thanks to an inheritance.

Don't be so quick to turn a casual romance into a serious commitment at the start of the month. It's best to develop this relationship slowly. The more you know each other, the stronger your bond will become. The New Moon on the 12th could prompt you take a class or begin a writing project; exercising your intellect will be the priority.

CANCER

SCORPIO

PISCES

June 22nd - July 23rd

October 24th - Nov 22nd

Feb 20th - March 20th

Occupying the spotlight will be a good use of your charisma at the start of the month. It's a great time to go on auditions and job interviews. The New Moon on the 12th could drop a fabulous career opportunity in your lap; don't hesitate to accept a leadership role. On the 26th, the Full Moon will prompt you to abandon a romance or creative project that no longer thrills you.

Pouring your energy into a fitness regimen will be a great use of your time at the beginning of the month. Having an outlet for your restless energy will be good for you. A demanding but rewarding job will be offered to you near the 12th, thanks to an upbeat New Moon. Not only will you enjoy your duties, but the perks will be great, too.

Opportunities to increase your income will abound at the beginning of April. If you'd like to start your own business, the New Moon on the 12th is an ideal time to do so. You could get some start-up cash from a generous relative. Don't let peer pressure prompt you to take an undesirable path during the middle of the month; it's critical to listen to your heart.

The Curse of

Beckett’s Wood

A review of R. E. Witham’s latest blockbuster novel

Recently, when the author R. E. Witham was asked to describe his latest three-part novel; ‘The Curse of Beckett’s Wood’, he said it was made of so many facets that a single genre wouldn’t suffice. There is a well thought-out psychological framework to this book; it has piano-wire-tension running through it. The story is a mysterious one with a love story and a hate story woven into its fabric along with flashes of eroticism that set the pulse racing. All this, along with its beautifully written narrative, an almost movie-like visual clarity and a style that urges you on page after page, you have here an indefinable book that sets itself deep into one’s imagination. As if to unbalance the reader into a false sense of security the story begins innocently enough with a cyclist’s arrival at a Wiltshire village. Things that shouldn’t be changing alter all around him; his world becomes black and white and he discovers that he’s no longer in the present but in the 1950s. Unable to get out of the local celebrations going on in the village pub he discovers the event is, in fact, his parent’s wedding; years before he was conceived. The downward spiral of his mind has begun, made even more disturbing by the arrival of the local landowner who wields a soul-destroying power over him. His wife on the other hand effects him quite differently as she lures him into nearby Beckett’s Wood to set the curse in motion. The ending of this part of the book has the most exquisite twist and creates more questions than it answers. Part two has no discernible connection with what has just gone before. We meet David Harper at a cemetery and here he casts his mind back through his life. In a way it’s a confessional, an owning up of all the terrible things he’s had to

two of this book are interwoven. Interestingly, several chapters of part two take place in and around Newark. Seeking answers to an ever-growing bank of evidence, part three sees David and friends on the hunt for clues about his past life. What he finds out, and the way he does it, turns the story into a detective novel alongside an insight into mental health. The end, when it comes has you set up for a climax that is anything but what you were led to expect but one that has all the satisfaction that such a book deserves. endure; the punishment at the hand of his mother, the sexual abuse she metes out to him and the strange influence this has on his adult life. Here the author has been able to plant the reader inside a badly damaged mind, almost making sense of the twisted ways he tries to reform a balance long since bent out of kilter. His odd behaviours run parallel to night terrors; dreams of a village far away and in a time long before his own. These echoes which he can’t understand are the first indications that parts one and

Spring Into Pattern Sweetly pretty or boldly dramatic, pattern has the potential to transform any room. From simple geometrics to the catwalk-inspired ‘matchy matchy’ look of all-over pattern, eye-catching patterns seem to be everywhere at the moment. Including pattern brings character to a home, but it may not seem easy to do. Get inspiration from the form of something you own, such as a painting, vase or throw, or from images in magazines, books and websites. Then think about your pattern partiality. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours, or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small? Historical prints or modern? Patterns are also subtly present, such as in the weave of fabric or basketry or the grain of timber and should

not be overlooked. Consider where pattern is appropriate: as a subtle element within a room, such as a small blind or a cushion cover; or all-out, from ZDOOV DQG ¿RRU WR IDEULFV DQG accessories. In bigger rooms, use very large-scale patterns for impact, while mediumor small-scale patterns are generally better in smaller URRPV ° WKRXJK ¾OOLQJ D WLQ\ room (e.g. a WC) with a giant pattern can make a feature of it.

Create a mood board using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint Start simple, with just a dash of a single pattern, if you

are worried about mixing patterns. When combining two or more patterns, the professional pattern books from fabric and wallpaper manufacturers can help to see which patterns work together. To introduce greater variety, create a mood board using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint, and cut-out images of furnishings. Place the dominant pattern ¾UVW ° SHUKDSV WKH EULJKWHVW or the one with the largest scale – and add others from there. Swap items in and out, or change their proportions, until it looks right. For patterns that co-ordinate, complementary colours are key. Lighter and darker versions of the same hue work well together and provide a pleasing variety. A variety of scales also adds interest and impact. Remember that very smallscale patterns are only really noticeable close up, so are a subtle scheme element. Next: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. A variety of densities gives balance and interest. And ¾QDOO\ GHVLJQ $EVWUDFW ¾JXUDWLYH UHWUR WUDGLWLRQDO modern – there’s something for everyone, and a coherent mix of patterns will make a room seem like it has evolved naturally over time.
